Play GW2 as it should be, with a controller!
Pfff, you console peasant.

Excellent insight! You’ve swayed my opinion entirely.
I have played a lot of console (both xbox and ps3) and have just recently gotten more involved in pc gaming (within the last year), but I just don’t see how using a controller is anywhere near as easy as a kb/mouse. But, if it works well for you, good for you! The more comfortable you are with the controls, the better you will be.
…but I just don’t see how using a controller is anywhere near as easy as a kb/mouse.
Go give it a shot. It’s intuitive, provides everything you need at your fingertips (even ground casting) and I feel gives you far better control over your character than a kb/mouse combo does.

Screw pinnacle. Get xpadder m8
It is possible i have a friend who plays guildwars 2 with a controller. He uses a program called Xpadder. he did enounter one problem. He cant move the camera because it requires you to hold the mouse 2 button down and move the mouse to change the camera. If you figure it out please let us xpadders know.

I use xpadder and really thats not a problem, you can hold mouse button L or R and have the mouse movement on one xpadder stick or paddle whatever you want.
And I find the controller much more comfortable than the KB, and I can sit back in my comfy chair not huddled over the KB.
Neat, but what happens when my Pinnacle trial is over?
You pony up the cash and pay for it or you don’t. It’s a great program, I’ve been using it for years. It is incredibly robust, updated frequently and adds new functionality at every turn and is worth every bit of the $25 they ask for it.

I have used both and find Xpadder to be pretty good, but I feel Pinnacle offers more, has a nicer interface and better dev support. However, the argument can be made that Xpadder is free and it’s hard to argue with free, to me however, Pinnacle justifies the price they charge.
Honestly you lost me as soon as you said you need a keyboard to chat and mouse/keyboard for inventory management. I’m almost always in guild chat when I’m playing and I like to stop regularly to sort my inventory out so trying to use a controller sounds like it’d be more trouble than it’s worth.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
One of the worst things about being designed to be controller friendly is the generic “F-to-perform-all-actions” setup.
I am a Warrior. I auto-loot as I go by hitting F as soon as my target dies. If nothing drops, I often find myself unintentionally reviving a nearby downed player/NPC, harvesting a nearby node, or having Trahearne pop a dialogue box up in my face obscuring the action. Not good. They need to make it a little LESS controller friendly and break those individual functions up, rather than this one-key-does-it-all mess.
Set a man on fire, and he’ll be warm the rest of his life.

I played GW2 beta with Xbox360 Controller using Xpadder.
In my opinion and for my own preferences I like the Xbox360 controller for GW2 100%.
Without my Controller I cannot play GW2 at all. I’d have to return the game since K&M is almost impossible for me to play the game with, not to mention it’s not fun for me either using the K&M for gaming.
It was because of GW2 I got into PC gaming in the first place.
I created my own Xbox360 controller layout that works for my playstyle perfectly.
It’s NOT online and you cant find my layouts anywhere since I made it and I didn’t even share it to public yet. But I have shared it through skype if anyone is interested in.
Might even make a future youtube video on it one day. =)
So far, it feels like GW2 for me is Not playable without my controller and layouts.
Here is a video on me playing on the Controller:

Pop the controller on your lap when you’re guild chatting and inventorying, and when you’re ready for combat you pick it up. See, was that so hard?
A couple of questions.
Was it difficult to set up? I have a controller (not Xbox, same layout though) and figured i couldn’t just use your layout.
Also has anyone tried this and/or the Nostromo keypad? Which seems better. I’ve got large hands and I need to find a better solution than trying to scrunch up my hand to select the proper keys.
Thanks.
I challenge you to successfully play Wintersday’s Bell Choir Ensemble.
I play with my skills remapped from 12345,6,789,0 to qwert,g,zxc,a
I tried it once before I remapped it to default, completed it with perfect score, remapped it back, never went back there.

I’ll stick to the keyboard it probably is easier for a lot of people to use a controller this will be my first mmorpg in 6 years so I want to play it like it was intended, cool idea though!

Pinnacle supports a bunch of different controllers, check the lower right part of this page to see if yours is listed:
http://pinnaclegameprofiler.com/
Other than that you just need to download Pinnacle, visit the forum post in the OP, download the file, import it into Pinnacle and launch the game from within Pinnacle. If you are even moderately computer savvy it shouldn’t be an issue.

Appreciate it. Appreciate the hard work. I need to see if I can do something different with the camera. I usually use wasd and the RMB to move and strafe. Something doesn’t feel quite right at the moment. I’ll tinker around and see if I can fix that. Guess I’m just used to keyboard/mouse right now.
And how did you deal with ground-targeted skills? (BTW Your link isn’t working for me, but it may be because I’m at work)
And how did you deal with ground-targeted skills? (BTW Your link isn’t working for me, but it may be because I’m at work)
Visit the link in the OP, it’s explained there.
PS, I don’t think the link was working because Pinnacle’s forums are currently down for maintenance.
PPS, as it seems their forums have been down for a couple days now I’ll explain ground targeted spells. Here’s how they work with my profile:
In my profile the pulling the left trigger gives you full mouse pointer control using the right stick, additionally it also “warps” the cursor to a predetermined set of mouse coordinates (these coordinates vary depending on what resolution you play at, there’s a tutorial in the OP link describing how to edit these coordinates to your liking) allowing for very fast mouse positioning.
A game play example would go something like this:
1) Press the button for the skill you want to ground target
2) The target appears where the mouse cursor is located when the button is pressed
3) Pull the left trigger and the ground target area of effect will “warp” to the coordinates specified. The default coordinates in the profile will “warp” the ground targeted area of effect to directly in front of your character. Where exactly in front of your character is determined by camera angle, for example, if the angle is more of an overhead angle it will appear nearer your feet, if the angle is more from behind it will appear further out from your character.
4) With the left trigger still pulled, use the right stick to reposition the area of effect exactly where you would like it (if you even need to move it at all).
5) Press the skill button again to cast it.
Getting proficient at casting this way is intuitive, can be picked up pretty quickly and occurs much much faster than the above outline would have you believe. Furthermore, a couple of these steps can be eliminated if quick casting is enabled.
Hope that helps. Enjoy!

Can you better describe the problem you’re having? Specifics would help. I can probably help you get it sorted out.

Not sure exactly how to describe it. Basically I don’t feel like I can strafe properly. When using KB/M I’ll steer with both LMB and RMB pressed and moving the mouse. When in combat I release LMB and use WASD with the RMB to fight and strafe. I noticed you have movement assigned to the arrows. I might try remapping it to WASD and see if that works.
I might try remapping it to WASD and see if that works.
Well, WASD movement is the same as arrow key movement. It sounds like you might want the AD of WASD to rotate the camera which would mean you would want the left/right motion on the right stick to handle strafing? Is this what you had in mind?
I played with controller but it’s extremely annoying that I can’t type so I ditched it.
Anyone tried a G13 from Logitech? still get a joystick, can map all the skills and some other functions. Will still need to use the keyboard to chat but as the G13 sits beside the keyboard it isn’t hard to do.
Anyone tried a G13 from Logitech?
Pinnacle supports just about anything out there, so my guess is that it will work.
I had initially thought about going with a controller because I’m much more of a traditional console gamer (though I have played MMO’s for over 12 years)… then… I ran across this gem.. the logitech g600 mouse… http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826104674&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleAdwords&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-_-pla-_-Mice-_-N82E16826104674 … 20 buttons, I have every single function I need to use mapped to the side pannel and never have to use my keyboard except to type nor do I even have to bother using my left hand, leaving that open for channel surfing. Now that’s relaxing

That’s pretty interesting. I’ve heard of people using mice of many buttons to supplement their normal left hand stuff, but I’ve never heard of anyone using the mouse exclusively for everything. Does it ever get confusing?

actually after about a day you get really used to it, and the buttons are sloped slightly so you can clearly tell which buttons you are going to hit once you get used to the set up you made. It’s made dodging feel much easier as well which I was having an issue getting used to prior to getting the mouse.

Yes indeed.

I think I might be able to work something out to get that working. Just to clarify, on the left stick: Up/Down = forward/backward and Left/Right = camera rotation. And on the right stick: Up/Down = camera tilt up/down and Left/Right = strafing? Correct?
Edit: In the game you can bind the camera rotation to the Left and Right arrow keys that would solve the left stick problem. Figuring out the right stick might be tricky.
Other Edit: I messed around with it a bit and had some luck, but unfortunately I didn’t have all luck. Trying to set it up how you like creates issues with Pinnacle and I’m not sure it can be fixed, it’s a limitation of the program. My original profile is pretty standard when it comes to playing 3rd person games, you might want to familiarize yourself with that instead. Sorry.

Again, appreciate the effort. I think you’re right I just need to get used to it.
It might feel more convenient using a controller but it’s not at all more efficient than K&M.You will never be as accurate as you are with the mouse when you use the stick.I made a scenario to back it up : Teleports, shadowsteps, blinks in PVP are mandatory. On top of that, the exact location you “land” is crucial too and to make matters worse you have to do act really fast.I cant consider my self doing all the “tricky” teleports(eg random video showing some “secret spots” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pr6gxULn00 )
So, it might be fun for PvE but in PVP would be selfdisasterous at some point.
Anyways,I only use controller for racing games and only for obvious reasons.I feel far more confident with K&M Its all matter of habbit

To be honest I haven’t tried it in PvP, but the way I see it is that even if I were to switch over to kb/m it will not make me go from a so so player to top of the leaderboards. That being said, I’d much rather be my so so self and comfortable than (maybe) marginally better and using something I find obtuse for gaming purposes.

This is not true.
I play on Xbox360 controller that I have created for my own Layouts.
And I play more effeciantly than most players I bump into for PvP, PvE, or even dungeons.
Choosing to play on the Xbox360 Controller or a K&M is just a playstyle preferences.
Some people are more accurant and effeciant in combat with Controllers than K&M.
Here is the video of me playing with my controller with all 8 Professions as proof to my point:
Again, I play on my own Xbox360 Controller Layouts Exclusivly and you cant find it online since I havnt shared it to public yet.
This is purely a pve thing.Unable to type or having to switch to kb is a hassle. It;s fun when soloing around pve maps,in a slow pace…other then that you won’t be going anywhere when trying to pvp against someone using a kb – mouse.Tried it at the start of guild wars 2 in august, but it’s all just way,way to slow.
Unable to type or having to switch to kb is a hassle.
I keep seeing this argument. To go from typing to playing in a kb/m setup you take your hand off the keyboard to reach for the mouse. How is reaching for a controller any more of a hassle?
PC POWAH
Nah most games work better with Mouse/keyboard (except 3d fighting games/openworld games like GTA/Racing games/3d platformers)
but if you like it for PvE, why not?
I might try it, better to love and lose than never have loved at all!

This is untrue. My keyboard is on my lab while I lay back on my chair with my feet up playing on the xbox360 controller. And I PvP better than most who use K&M.

Comparing unequal skill level players just show lack of arguments.
Sure there are MANY K&M users that are slower than death but how about comparing competitive players? Results will sure be different that you have presented.
Anyways, can you solve me my query? Why if controllers are so accurate and efficient, there is a option called aim-ASSIST in consoles?Doesn’t make sense to me.
By the way, your videos show that yes you can actually play PvE with controllers, if you like but not fast paced PvP(and I am not talking about WvWvW or hotjoin mate).
Well,if you do not accept it and defend controllers foverer further discussion is uneccessary.Relaxable? Yes but not more efficient than K&M.If you claim that you havent reached the full potential of it.
Controllers work well to play the game like a action RPG. It gives better movement because you can move in any direction easily.
Controllers don’t work well for targeting individual enemies, GUI, and fast jumping puzzles. I still use a keyboard and mouse for those. I just switch back and forth.
After playing PC games for over 20 years, I have grown less and less hardcore about winning and have grown more attached to the experience, story, etc. I got GW2 when it was new, but only played til lvl 25 or so.
Now, I’m back, playing with the PS3 controller, and enjoying the game more than ever. It’s easy enough to reach over and type to socialize, but I am having a better experience kicking back in my reclining chair, playing through the story, questing, and admiring the work put into the scenery.
…Still tweaking the button layouts to my liking. Xpadder is great, though.
Wait! Don’t hit that back button just yet. Hear me out on this one. * Ahem *
Guild Wars 2 is meant to be played with, and plays much better with a controller.
Anyone still here? Good, now that all of those people are gone bar the door.
I have been on a long hiatus from Tyria but am jumping back in in earnest. I meant to post this here a long time ago, but previously when I was attempting it these boards weren’t even up and running yet.
So here it is:
How I Learned to Stop Trolling and Love the Controller.Don’t let that wall of text beyond the link scare you, a good chunk of it isn’t even pertinent any more. It’s now mostly revision notes.
Anyway, there is a lot of work that went into creating and testing that profile and using it makes playing GW2 akin to playing a well oiled console game. Meaning, better. I kid, we all know the PC is the master race. But now you can put your feet up comfortably (but keep your keyboard handy for chat) and have at it proper just like you would with that old keyboard and mouse.
Just one caveat, aside from chatting you can perform any in-game action with my profile (some commands aren’t mapped to the controller, but all of them are in there if you choose to map them yourself), but for things like inventory management and crafting are still easier with a keyboard and mouse. My profile is meant for minute to minute game play.
Are they still out there? Drat! Ok ok, leave the bar in the door and quietly skulk out the back.
Go have fun!
*And if you have any feedback, please leave it in the thread on the Pinnacle boards
Nice man. I plan on trying this out. One question tho…while is the keyboard and mouse still activated? Meaning if I needed to type something, could I without having to restart or whatever?
ah nvm I didn’t know this required a purchase to do
A couple of questions.
Also has anyone tried this and/or the Nostromo keypad? Which seems better. I’ve got large hands and I need to find a better solution than trying to scrunch up my hand to select the proper keys.
Thanks.
Just to add i recommend using this gamepad/keypad. You can put all The 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0 + spacebar keys all under your thumb by way of a d-pad and and 2 buttons. F1,F2,F3,F4 directly under your movement w,a,s,d keys. Makes for a better experience i feel.
Keys like your inv, hero panel and map can be placed within 2 keys reach of your movement keys.
Your weapon swap is under your index finger by way of a scroll wheel and click it to hide/unhide your weapons.
And yet it still feels roomy/spacey. Not cramped up like on a conevential KB.
You still have to transfer to KB for chat but its all right next each other.
I may have to have a go at this controller playing style though, and see what it plays like. Seems interesting the thought of just sitting back relaxed and playing guild wars 2!
Surely you dont get the same responsiveness or accuracy from the controller over a mouse though?

Yes, Aim-Assist is the best thing for controller and it makes controller play accurate for games such as first person shooters and all.
HOWEVER
I am a competitive player and I can sure kill a very skillful K&M player who is just as competitive as I am. Do you know why? It’s NOT because I play on the Controller, it’s because I have access and smooth control configurations that works for my playstyle and so does the other competitive player who uses K & M.
So it is irrelevant if you play with K&M or an Xbox360 Controller for GW2. What matters is you feel comfortable and have easy access to all skills while on the move and dodge because in the end… it’s the better player who wins.
Xbox360 Controller is extremely accurate play if you know how to set it up right that works for you. K & M Has no advantage over xbox360 controls. Only the player and the controller configuration matters.
P.S: I’m a PvPer…
ah nvm I didn’t know this required a purchase to do
You do get a 30 day trial and I feel for the work they have put in and continue to put in via regular updates, the $25 they charge is well worth it.
I’ve stumbled across this thread, because I’m thinking about getting a (wireless) gamepad to play GW2. The positive feedback here makes me want to try this even more, however:
I’ve absolutely no idea what controller I should get. I’ve never ever played with an xbox, PS or any other console. My only experiences in that area come from playing Super Mario on a GameBoy (the older ones amongst you might remember that one).
In short: Can anyone recommend a nice gamepad? Money is not so much of an issue, but comfort is. Thanks in advance for your help
