Hey all,

I got the game over the weekend and was wondering if it’s possible to switch servers without having to pay with gems.

The reason why I’m asking is simply because I kinda rushed head on into the game and picked a server that’s different to what my friends are currently playing on. I know that it’s possible to swap servers for free by deleting my characters but I’ve already invested quite a bit of time to want to have to start all over again.

I do believe that it’s free to change to some servers right now. If you are lucky maybe your friends plays on a server that i’ts free to change to. No promises though.

It’s worth a shot I suppose, but how would I do that? Still fairly new to the game so I’m not entirely sure how to do any of this :p.

When you’re on the character select screen (the one with your character against a background), there’ll be a “World Selection” button on your bottom left. Hit that and check the price for transferring to the server your friends are on.

If the transfer isn’t free, my honest advice to you is to just pack up those belongings, send them over to your friends for temporary storage, delete your character, and switch worlds for free. If you tried to farm up the gems to buy your way over there, you’ll probably burn out quickly. You also only have a couple of days under your belt so it’s not too much of a less. If you’re worried about your character’s name, I think it stays reserved to only your account for 24H or so after deletion.

Gave it a shot, sadly the world I need to switch to doesn’t have do it for free :/

I suppose so, but it just puts me off that I’ll have to work all the way from the start again. I know I’m only lvl 15 at the moment but it’ll just seem like a grind.

One of my friends suggested logging a ticket with support, I doubt it would work but it’s worth a shot I suppose.

It will take 1-2 days to get an answer from suppport and I doubt you will have any success. And in 1-2 days you can get back to lvl 15 if you delete your chars now. Your choice.

Galoot. Do you have a lot of friend on this server? Maybe they could transfer to a free server with you. Free transfer to some server last until march 27th.

If they don’t want to transfer because they are already in a good server, or they are in a good guild, they you can still stay on your server.

You can do all the dungeon you want with them. You can also guest to their server to play with them on the open world. Guest is free, but you only have 2 guest per 24h. But for your situation you can simply guest each time on their server and you will never have any problem. Even if they do guild mission, you will be able to guest on their server and get the reward. It will also work in sPvP where you will be able to play with them.

The only problem will be that you can’t have access to their guild buff and services and you won’t be able to play with them in WvW.

It’s just the thought that all that time I put in will be put to waste. Mind you I’m a bit of a slow paced gamer so it takes me time to reach milestones. If it has to come to that then I suppose I’ll have to start on a clean slate.

@Thaddeus: I do, yes. They’ve got their own guild going and stuff, hence why I wanna join them. I don’t think transferring to a different server would work for them since they’re pretty well established already. We thought about the guesting thing but I would just prefer it if I were on the same server as the, just less hassle.

On a side note, I bought the Heroic Edition and got some armour cosmetics. Will they be lost if I start on a clean slate or will they be saved somewhere?

Did you use the armor? If not, it will be quite safe in your bank. The chest is account bound.

If you used it already you will need to transmute the look onto some white quality armor to unsoulbind it and then you can save it in your bank.

I think it would be woorth it for you to start over. I do hope the server you are aiming for isn’t full though.

I haven’t used the cosmetics although I did open the chest they’re in and the pieces are just sitting in my bank. I did, however, use the actual low level armour that came with it; will this stay if I start from scratch?

Either you or them still have the option of guesting on a daily basis so you can play together. Once activated, a guest pass lasts for 24h. You can literally play all day long together even while on different servers.
You may only have a problem with Living World stuff, as guesters in Overflow are locked out of main maps by a cleverly veiled error message, but you should all be ok if you stay in overflow. Been in many over the past LS and despite what some may tell you, you can get a lot of successful runs even in overflow.
