I’ve been considering all the races for my future Revenent and decided that Charr seem the most appealing to me right now, but I’m slightly put off by their size, and the threat that it could make armor selection difficult.

So my reasoning for making this thread is to gather information on what the Charr are like when it comes to armor, weapon, and back piece clipping issues. I’ve never bothered with the Charr before, my main being a Norn, and so I thought this would be the perfect place to get some feedback on how the Charr are like when it comes to clipping issues.

tl;dr: Do Charr suffer clipping issues with the current armor, weapons and backpieces.

Although they suffer no clipping issues from armor, a lot of armor choices for them are stupid and poorly designed (you’ll see a lot of ignoring the tail, humongous shoulders, ABSURDLY designed helmets) but there are also some good ones.

Weapons and back pieces do suffer some scaling issues but that is very individual aand you’re better off just previewing it all yourself.

TL:DR – go preview it your kitten self in the wardrobe

Do you have a Charr Vert? The tail clips through the armor in 90% of the cases. The horns/ears/face clips through a lot of helmets.

One of my biggest gripes about Charr armour is that many of the leg pieces look like aprons and utterly ridiculous on Charr. Pretty much the only ones I’ve found that are somewhat acceptable are the Vigil, Phalanx (Gem store armour), Carapace (still a bit of a skirt but not so much an apron). The pants style leg armours aren’t too bad but will be down to personal taste. The biggest problem is the stowing of weapons on the apron style armour. They will almost always clip.

You’ll have to do a lot of looking to find decent looking shoulder armour for Charr. Personally, Vigil is one of the better options as is Phalanx and Gladiator. Barbaric shoulder armour isn’t too bad either.

Chest armour is very hit and miss, particularly if your Charr has a very burly body.

Charr tails still clip through almost all armor that’s not Charr racial. Shoulders are also borderline absurd in size, and I guess some helms are bad (I usually hide helms).

Pawprints are still backwards when walking around on all fours, too.

But don’t let that get you down. Charr and charr culture are terrific.

Charr tails even clip through armor that is racial (T3 Light).

I think some of the major turnoffs have already been listed.

  • The majority of the shoulderpieces are too bulky and make the character appear disproportionate. There are definitely enough exceptions to have some variety.
  • There’s just a couple of heavy helmets that look good on a Charr. Even the awesome T3 cultural removes your hair. Of course that happens with the other races too, but with Charr is more apparent because their hair is also on the “neck”.
  • Tail clipping with most armours. You do get used to it though.

That said, your mileage may vary wildly with everything else.
Personally, since the upper part tends to appear more bulky, I had some trouble finding the right balance. I tend to dislike big shoulder pieces (like the Vigil one) and the pants style leggings: that’s the opposite of Azrael’s preference, because it’s really just a matter of personal taste.
I like T3 leggings because they don’t make your legs look tiny. Some other people might dislike them for the same reason.

Boots can also be an issue.

A lot of players settle on heavy cultural T3 not so much for lack of imagination, but because it is a very cohesive look with shines for the lack of the defects that a lot of the other armours share.

If you have an empty character slot, I definitely suggest creating mr. “Heavycharrtest” and try out on the bank wardrobe the various looks.

EDIT: That said, it’s definitely possible to make an awesome looking Charr, so don’t be discouraged. This is not a “negative” post, I felt I needed to clarify that.
I think that humans are the only race that can look flawless no matter the armour set. This doesn’t mean the other races can’t look cool, you just need to find a look that works with the different proportions of your race of choice.

I have 8 characters. 8 of those characters are Charr. The Revenant will be my 9th Charr character.

The clipping isn’t as bad as people say it is, for real. The only thing that really makes me want to flip a table when it comes to Charr, is shoulder pieces that don’t connect, and decide they want to float, but other than that, nothing bothers me.

I prefer my tail to clip through armour, rather than having a “Tail hole”, because of how the Charr’s tail is animated. Because it’s animation is a bit sporadic, it just seems to glide effortlessly when put with “clipping” armour, but with a properly cut hole for the tail, they generally have a plate above, to cover the hole slightly, but this plate tends to jerk round a bit, because the animation is sporadic, and it looks really awkward.

Helmets are bad on all races. Hide the lot of them. Its not an issue.

For me, the Charr are just a really good lore experience, with great visuals, despite being “Buggy” or bad, according to a lot of players. Clipping never bothered me, I don’t notice it. If you have a spare character slot, make a Charr, preview a load of stuff, if you like it, keep, if you don’t, make something else.~

I forgot to mention that my absolute biggest gripe is Charr helmets. 90% of them look thoroughly stupid as if the artist ran out of inspiration on how to fit them to Charr.
Most look like busted pots.

I despaired on finding a decent one and hid them by default. Then Anet introduced the glowing eye masks…and I bought them all. Now, none of my characters have helmets, merely glowing eyes.

Nope, don’t have a charr but that’s due to previewing many armors and being disappointed.

Let me clarify, what I meant by clipping is the weapons to armor compatibility. I’ve found that quite of few of the 2h weapons that clip on humans/sylvari will not on charr. This applies to 1h weapons as well unless you like the skirt type of Pant or the
med armor long coats. This however is an issue with all races.

I addressed the tail issue in the brackets after my first sentence. The tail is just ignored by the designers when the port armors from humans to charr, in most cases at least.
