I have severe Carpal Tunnel and Cubital Tunnel in my left arm. The doctors asked me to stop any activity that aggravates the injury. When playing it’s like being stabbed in the wrist while barely being able to feel my hand. I am already at the stage that I can’t feel hot or cold in the left hand.
Any thoughts? Didn’t know if this was appropriate for the forums. I would just like some input.

Yes, stop playing! Get a wrist guard of some sort and rest your arm. Alternatively you can always try using just your mouse to play in the mean time? You won’t be able to do anything intense but most content should be doable. There is even a dodge button above your HP that you can press to dodge and you can keybind auto-run to your mouse so you can toggle that on/off to move.

This isn’t even a question you should have to ask.

Hint: Your doctor probably knows about the subject at hand.

There are undoubtably people who can play with only one hand so there must be equipment for this. Maybe visit a computer store and see what they have or can order.

Shifting everything to one hand will put more stain on your remaining good hand. Please take your doctor’s advice, even if it means temporarily giving up things that you like to do. Don’t fool yourself – your condition will not improve, and will certainly deteriorate if you continue to do the things that caused the issue in the first place. Restrict your activities, and do the things you’ve been directed to do, so that you can heal. Then you can go back to doing the things you like to do.(But with recommended changes, ergonomic aids, etc… So that you won’t have the same issues develop again.) Take care, and please do as your doctor directs you to do.
you should log in to your account once a week(or have someone do it for you) so that your account doesn’t look inactive or abandoned. Hackers target accounts that seem inactive or abandoned. If you can’t log in without being tempted to play, please get someone you trust to do it for you. Good luck with treatment.

If you have to ask random strangers than it must not be bad enough. You should definitely keep on playing through the pain.

Having to ask this question from what you describe indicates you may need other professional therapy (and I don’t mean physical). Not being mean, but if you are willing to sacrifice your health and endure PAIN to play a game, you should likely stop for reasons other than the injury….

I would stop playing and ask it directly to a doctor.
But if you really want to play, try to buy something like Razer Naga or Logitech G600 and try to play only using your right hand, or probably a Razer Nostromo would be a better idea.

Yes, for the six’ sake stop playing! Don’t kill yourself over this, it’s only a game. You’re not missing out on much and there is no sub, so your not losing anything.

Also I am pretty sure this is a troll, or OP has way bigger issues than a injured hand.

I am definitely not a troll. I wanted to see what other people thought of this. It’s mixed feelings of not being able to do things with the people that I have played with for so long.

I had an issue with a Torn rotator cuff on my left shoulder, which meant I couldn’t play WoW normally. They had a click to move feature, so I could continue playing, with just using my right hand. I don’t know if GW2 has a click to move option though.

If you let it is rest, it will heal. If you task it, it will get worse.

You don’t have to give up your friends though. You can chat with them using just one hand if you wish.

Well it’s not exactly click to move, but both mouse buttons (L & R) together does cause you to run

Seriously? – and you’re looking for a second opinion…from gamers?
My uncle has diabetes, he was told by his doctor that unless he changed his lifestyle there would be consequences – a simple fact that he chose to ignore.
Long story short and 2 amputations later, he’s now wheelchair bound and requires aid to do the most menial of tasks.
Now, ask yourself, do you take your advice from your doctor or complete strangers on a games forum.
It’s a no brainer mate – stop playing.

IF your doctor advises you to stop doing things that cause pain in your left arm, AND
IF playing Guild Wars 2 causes pain in your left arm, THEN
you should stop playing Guild Wars 2.

Doing otherwise means questioning the judgment of your doctor, which you probably shouldn’t do unless you have a medical degree yourself (and even then, probably not).

(The only exception I can think of is to play GW2 in such a way that there is a 0% chance to further aggravate your left arm. Such as playing with your left arm physically restrained (in a medically approved way, such as a sling) to prevent any accidental reaching for the keyboard/mouse. And even then, run it by the doctor first.)

(Also, if your doctor’s advice pertains to Guild Wars 2, it probably also extends to computer use in general.)

Milled over this question for a few days mainly because I grew up with recurring minor carpal tunnel in the left wrist. I always fought though it even with a brace. In my 40s now. End result the carpal is gone now for about a decade but my left thumb has been permanatly numbed due to nerve damage, my left index and middle finger took 3 years returning from numb to normal. Turns all out that’s really annoying even though I’m right handed.

You, Torvarren, have 15x(ish) worse then what I had and I’m damaged for life. You can lose feeling and mobility in your entire left arm, and that would not be fun. I just have a useless thumb to watch out for and not everything attached to it.

Maybe look into Voice command software, see if that could work. If not read a book and rest, the ‘Otherworld’ series by Tad Williams is quite interesting.

Well you could keep playing until you literally can’t any more (months, weeks?) And live with impaired function in your arm for the rest of your life.

Or take a break for awhile.

I know I’d try playing one hand myself first though, haha. Especially if I was off work, boring days without the computer. But if I couldn’t do it or it just wasn’t fun to play that way, I’d stop.

I thank you much for your input. Nice to hear from someone that had something similar. It has taken 6 months to get my doctor to order tests for my hand. Refraining from arm use seems the best option at this time.
Again, thanks for your input.

You could buy a Foot Switch and use your feet instead of your left hand. Probably a big learning curve, though.

I’ve been through this, although my pain did not get as bad as your sounds. For what it’s worth, here’s what worked for me:

  1. If you use a mouse at work, immediately switch hands. It took me a few weeks of getting used to it, now I’m pretty good with it (not gaming good, but work good).
  2. Buy a wrist brace at your local drug store and wear it at work, around the house. This is not a forever thing, but I wore mine quite a bit for a few months.
  3. No computer gaming at all for a period of time; basically until the pain has gone away and your wrist is healed. I continued gaming on my console (PS3) and that did not cause me pain. Only the mouse/keyboard caused me pain.

My carpal tunnel is cured and I went back to computer gaming a long time ago.

Again, I’m not doctor, this is just what worked for me. It’s been my experience that doctors don’t have much to offer when it comes to chronic pain like this; sometimes experimenting on your own is the only way to figure it out.

But yeah, in the short term at least you need to stop or see if 360/PS3 controllers are pain-free for you.

Good luck.

I have a sword, a dagger, and an estimated life span of 2.47 seconds.

Your welcome, please take care of yourself as it is a serious, annoying condition that goes far beyond immediate pain. Kinda like marriage. (okay was a cheap joke..maybe)

And ‘Otherworld’ by Tad Williams, don’t forget about that, it’s a trilogy, 1200 pages per and net/twisted alice in wonderland related.
