Viable PvE Classes.
Warrior or Guardian is your best bet.
That or you can find a guild that likes to run a lot of dungeons together and they don’t care what class you are. That is what I did.
That’s the problem, ALL professions are 100% useful and valuable.
The issue isn’t that some professions are better than others for group or solo plays, the issue is there are too many bad players, and ignorant players who think that this game still follows the old formula of other mmorpgs combat system with Roles such as “Tanks/Healers/DPS”.
This video will give you an idea of how each professions play and their values in combat:
Another Video I highly recommend you check out that will show you exactly how the combat system works in such a way where playing all professions are useful.
I hope these videos will help you understand the basic core mechanics of the combat system and realize that it’s Not the professions but the player playing them.
You also should Note: Even if you are a great player, you’ll be teaming up with people who are really poor at playing and might blame you for their stupid mistakes that gets them killed in the first place… Just avoid those types of players if you can and play with friends.
I don’t disagree with you that all classes are 100% viable.
Did run last night Where we had Engineer, 2 Rangers, Thief, Necromancer and it went great.
Necromancer was out “tank” so to say as she seemed to have agro most of the time and did a outstanding job.
Though if you were to make a character that PUGs want mostly, you are best off going Guardian or Warrior. There is still a large amount of players who think you have to take only certain classes.
Thanks for the video links, they were interesting. Yep thats my problem, i consider myself to be more than capable on my thief, but finding a group is much harder than it seems for other classes. sighs
all classes may be 100% viable but some classes like Ranger really don’t have as much to offer in dungeons e.t.c. You can still run it and succeed but it’s harder.
I would say that every class can do PvE but not every class can do every aspect of PvE well. For example, Mesmers lack a certain amount of immediate AOE damage potential. They aren’t the best at farming Orr, etc. Guardian does a lot better, because they have all the tools necessary to excel in any aspect of PvE.
It’s actually my greatest frustration with the game at present. I like Mesmer both because it’s fun to play and because of themetics, but want a character that can do anything in the game, and Mesmer really isn’t it. Thief is similar.
On a side note, the tools are there for any class to perform any role in any aspect of PvE, it’s just they aren’t as well-developed in certain classes as they are in others.
Protect us… Holy Song!

The reason why is because many players still play GW2 with the same mindset of WoW or games with the Tank/Healer/DPS roles in mind which is a problem in GW2 since those roles dont exist.
Also, I wouldn’t do PUG dungoens with people who claim to be Support or DPS roles since they are purposly handicapping themselves in other aspects of fights. I do however, highly recommend you party up with friends from guild you are good at playing with and learn how to coordinate with good friends in any team given situation, but avoid PUGs if you can. Problem with playing with Random players is the fact that you’ll be dealing with majority and majority still dont know how to play this game or take advantage of this game’s combat.
It’s one thing to know the dungoens well, but it’s Another thing to actually know how the combat works and becoming an asset to a team.
For my runs, I generally avoid playing with Guardians, Warriors, and sometimes Elementalist due to the fact that players tend to go back to old school mindset and make themselves handicapped in party play.
If you found my 2 videos helpful, why dont you check out my Written (Guide) which explains it in better details? A friend of mine also posted Combo Fields and finishers u might be interested to look into:

I hope all this helps. =)

I have Warrior, Thief and Ranger all kitted in Knight’s armour, and with weapons that have pow/pre/tou stats.
Believe it or not, while the Warrior does by far the most damage and has the highest crit, the Thief is the one that seems to survive the longest in any situation. Ranger and Warrior seem to be about equal, except the Ranger uses SB LB all the time so probably gets less aggro.
I find that all the scholar professions are very hard to use for PvE in general. Never have managed to finish one before I got frustrated at their weak damage outputs and squishiness.
