Why are the words tank and healer still used?
The holy trinity has been around for the better part of a decade and a half. It’s baggage that’s going to be hard to lose.
Also, guardians have a lot of ‘baked in’ group buffs, notably heals and damage reductions. Having one in the party can make a run a lot easier.

Often times having a master of 1 trade is better than a jack of all trades, just fits together better in group play.

Light, medium, and heavy armor…. nuff said.

The math for that is not so simple.
The short of it is… there is only a negligible difference in armor from Light > Medium > Heavy.
The holy trinity isnt used much but still someone has to go and take the damage of the boss, it doesnt mean that char has to be a full tank, it just means that players are still used to having the heavy plated classes to be the meat shields
I just wish there was a clear replacement. I agree that the trinity is dated and more complexity is welcome, but it seems that most players having trouble with even the “easy” story modes are not seeing ANY roles at all. I know some people get it and others don’t as evidenced by those encountering success, but I’d just like an explanation beyond “work together,” " lrn2dodge," and the related ilk. All that reads to me is “random twitch zergfest” and I know it has to be more than that.

Really people just need to suck it up and take their turn.
Boss is on you? Duck, dodge, dip, dive and dodge! Or turn on your tanky abilities and hope for the best.
I still find it useful to have someone hotbar a few extra heals though, just in case (necromancer healing well is great)
because someone still has to tank, they won’t be doing it full time but someone has to get hit by things or targeted by things, and it’s best if you try and have it be the guy who has the best defenses. same goes for heals, it’s always good to have somebody with a few extra heals on their bar.
as much as I like playing outside the trinity I think flat out removing it was the wrong way to go about it, I’d much rather they had just opened up the encounters so it wasn’t as much of a path of least resistance.
I like how the system is now. Basically everyone has to support each other.
I have a Guardian and even with heavy armor + shield we can’t take a beating without flopping over. If you spec. into it though you can get a lot of heals which makes you able to sit there and face tank some bosses.

The problem is not so much the lack of the holy trinity (which is good btw), it the lack of people actually working together, and finding out what the new rolls or mechanics of a group is. Someone else already touched on it… People now just zerg the mobs without even looking at what is happening to the party.
If it’s just an area boss, no one takes the time to see what others are doing. They all just try to spam the target with everything they have all the time. Spawned extra mobs are not being picked up, toons being downed and no one reviving them(if it is feasiable). Just everyone out to do the most damage on the boss. I think it may be a combination of the learning curve for the game and people wanting to get the gold medal.

Area bosses and quests are just massive zerg fests at the moment. The second they pop up you have about 20 people converging. There’s no real risk of wiping. People basically camp on the spawn points.
The learning curve of most MMOs is they give you only a little bit of your tools at a time and you gradually add more to as you level. This game hands you everything up front except for skills and traits which aren’t hard to get. By level 30 you have most of the ones you need anyway.
