If you are happy with the class then start gearing for ascended. For armor, you will likely need to craft. For weapon, you could craft, but there are some places you could maybe get a drop from. It’ll take a long time, so just start collecting mats and try out different builds to figure out what final armor you will want later on, at least for your primary competitive set. At minimum though, if you cringe at the idea of crafting, at least try for a weapon or two, though drops like from Teq take time.
The first step should probably be to get a set of level 80 exotic armor and weapons. Even if you’re planning to go for ascended (which a lot of people don’t bother with) exotics are so easy to get it’s well worth having them for the interim.
Make sure you know what stat combination(s) you want first though, so you don’t waste money getting one you can’t actually use.
You can get them from a few different places:
- Bought with gold from the Trading Post
- Crafted by level 400 crafters
- Bought with karma from the temples in Orr
- Bought with badges of honour in WvW
- Bought with dungeon tokens from the vendors in LA
- Awarded by the personal story and level up rewards
- Found on enemies (this can take a long time)
You can also combine methods if you don’t have enough of 1 currency or don’t want to spend it all (or if you already know what skins you want and you’re able to get the skin and the stats together).
Other than that it’s pretty much whatever you want to do. At level 80 GW2 becomes a lot more like a sandbox MMO. You can play in any zone, and any game mode, as much or as little as you want and there’s nothing you have to do.
I started by going to Southsun Cove, just because I’d been there for the Lost Shores weekend and hadn’t been able to go back since. Then I went and mapped Diessa Plateau because I hadn’t been to Ascalon much and liked the idea that I could still play in the low level zones without it being so easy it was boring. Then I started on the living story.

imo best place to get exotic gear is from the TP. Armor is actually pretty low, compared to weapons that people buy up to try their luck tossing into the mystic toilet for a precursor. You will want to try different sets before deciding on an ascended set, if you work for a set anyway. That really can depend on the class. My ele it’s no issue, a weapon is good enough. But like my thief, I squeeze every bit out of it I can, so full ascended.
The wvw vendor is a good place too, I’ve gotten some sets there. I’d save karma for what matters, being lots of obsidian shards later on. Dungeon armor is a good goal, but more about the skins more than anything, and takes a lot of work to get.
I think it depends on what you’ve been doing before getting to level 80. When I hit 80 I had less than 1 gold (I’d been spending it on minis) but enough karma for 2 sets of armor with some leftover.
Dungeon tokens are less likely to be useful for anyone, but I know some people do run dungeons while levelling and it’s another option. Especially if you like the skin as well.

game over, learn to use tp and mystic forge to get money to buy pretty stuff (this game is all about it), you dont even need to play the game anymore, unless you want the dungeons skins.
Don’t worry boys, Blade and Soul is coming.
Find method to acquire resources to build ascended gear and finish Armour and weapons.
