First-time player, but I’ve some friends who have played in the past. They may or may not return to play with me. The problem is that their characters are on the one “full” server (black gate) and I cannot create a character there. So questions:

- How long am I likely to have to wait to create a character on black gate?
- Once I have a character created, will I often be unable to play there during prime time?
- If I create a character on another server, will I be able to move it to black gate later? Will I be able to create other characters on black gate?
- Any other server to recommend?

1: no idea how much time, maybe months…
2: prime time? as long as you create a character you can always play there, there is no queues at all to “play” as far as i know.
3: Yes… but the cost it’ll be really high. Transferring to another server permanently isn’t cheap. The price is set up based on the population, for example to very high server the prices used to be 2100 gems, and 2100 gems are like 250gold. With so many gold you can buy a legendary. You can also buy gems with real world money, but then it will be also expensive.
4: If you have friends in a server, choose that one. This is the only real choice because you can go to any other server as a guest for 24 hours. However, you can’t join their WvsW maps while guesting. (WvsW is a PvP map where a server fights another 2 servers)

Random info: Although GW2 makes you choose a home server, you can join the dungeons, maps and everything else of any other server as long as it’s in your realm (EU servers or NA servers). So… unless you and your friends are going to go to WvsW, it doesn’t matter wich server you join, they can guest into your server and play.

You can transfer all of your characters to another server for 1800 gems. Meanwhile, you can use the guest feature to play with your friends in PvE on blackgate. The only thing you can’t do is play in WvW together. Server selection is account based, not character based, so you can’t create characters on multiple servers. Blackgate should eventually open up again. Tarnished Coast was the last “full” server I saw, and it probably stayed thatway for a month or so. As far as an alternate server goes, you could always choose one that blackgate is fighting in wvw, and PvP your friends

You can simply wait and try every day to make your charactaer on Blackgate. There’s no telling when you might manage to slip in. I used to be on EU server and then transfered to NA Jade Quarry some 10 months ago. I had the 1.800 gems but I had to wait a few days of spamming before I could make the transfer.

There is no limit to your play time regardless of how many people are online. You can log on anytime and be able to play anything. There is only one exception – WvW. The 4 maps usually have a queue, though only the Eternal Battlegrounds one is always present and can be a bit long.

You can guest from any server to another (EU/NA distinction still applies), but you only have 2 guests per day; once you log out or even go to character selection screen, the guest pass is revoked and you need to use a new one).

You can transfer your account at a later date, but it will cost you 1.800 gems, which is not exactly little. Once transfered, you can make any new chars on BG. You can also transfer for free if you delete all your characters, but that is up to you – I would never delete mine now that I invested so much time and resources into them.
