Hi

New player, this is only my second online game i have ever tried. I am totally lost. Watch YT but mostly of people who know what they are doing, so no help there.

I try asking question while playing, but never get a reply, so no help there.

I read these forums, but its all over the place for me, so no help there.

Many will read this and go Man what a noob. Yes i’m a noob.

I play, get bored because i am running around killing stuff over and over again in the same zone.

Join a guild you say, I did, but the times i logon , no one there, so no help there.

Is there a user guide anywhere or do just have to work it out for yourself.

This is my last attempt learning GW2.

First off, try going to different zones, for each race there is a 1-15 leveling area, I tend to get bored being in one area too long so I bounce around the map.

Don’t be afraid to try out multiple guilds, you can be in up to 5 at a time, so keep trying till you find one right for you.

And yes, most MMO type games just give you the basics and leave the rest to be figured out, so keep reading both here and on the Wiki to help figure things out.

There’s a thread stickied at the top of this forum that also has a lot of useful advice:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/OMG-If-you-only-knew-this-tips-for-new-players

In-game, your Map is very useful for figuring what to do—it will show you all the renown quests, points of interest, vistas, skill challenges in the area, as well as any dynamic events currently active.

And don’t be afraid to ask specific questions in this forum—someone will answer it eventually. We were all noobs once too!

GW2 compared to other MMO has a very small learning curve compared to other games, there are multiple paths to level, you can kill things, harvest things, do Hearts, discover maps, dynamic events, WvWvW, and even craft. Play the game you want to play, go out have fun and if it is not fun go do something else. My main focus right now is at least Getting the Daily done and doing Dynamic events as I come across them, Karma can be your friend when you find something on a vendor you want. Or saving up for a set of exotic gear (252,000 needed for an Orr Set).

Generally you can do find in Mastercraft armour/weapons (green) that can be found or bought cheaply in the TP. Don’t count on Rares in the TP there are some bargins if you look for them, but for the most part you will find them 10 – 20 x more expensive then Mastercraft.

This is a pretty casual game, and I found on my server that folks are quite willing to answer questions in Map Shout outs. So don’t be afraid to shout out and ask.

Cheers

If you don’t know what to do, or anything about the game, why not buy the Strategy Guide?

Or, google for stuff and find sites with all the info.

It’s not that hard.

Hey, if that other guild doesn’t work out for you, check out the thread Operation: Union. (link in my siggy) Read the first page at least, lol I know there are 27 pages currently. See if that will be a good fit for you personally. Never everyone fits in, but it is a good group of people. It crosses many servers and time zones so usually there is someone on and we have NO problem with noobs. We all were there at one point.

I know you said you’ve played one other online game, but have you played any other RPGs?

Even with the absense of clearly defined quests (aside from the personal story) this game works a lot like most RPGs – you explore the world and find people to help, monsters to fight, get rewards for doing it and get stronger as you go.

If you’ve played RPGs before you can approach it much the same way as any other, if not then yes it’s going to have quite a steep learning curve – almost all of them do. (Even games like Dragon Age which are aimed at people who haven’t tried the genre before.)

The threads other people have linked to will be a big help, but I’d also recommend taking your time in game to explore everything and read the hints – some of them make absolutely no sense unless you read them when they first pop up but others can be useful. The wiki (link at the top of the screen) is also good. As with all wikis it’s a work in progress and with this game being fairly new still there is a lot missing but I think most of the core mechanics and events/hearts/story quests are covered so searching on there for things you’re not sure about can help.

Also generally if you ask a specific question people here will be happy to help. “I don’t know what I’m doing” is a bit too vauge for us to know where to start, but if you were to ask things like “What are traits?”, “How do I make my own items?”, “What does confusion do?” etc. you’ll get some good answers.

Guide for the whole game: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/

Go there and search for whatever you need help on. It will at least get you started. Also, in game you can type in /wiki search term (replace search term with whatever you need help on) and it will take you straight to the wiki through your web browser.

Guild for new players who need help: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/OPERATION-UNION-Bringing-Players-Together/page/28

We’re always happy to answer questions and talk you through something.

You have to be invited to join a guild, but you can be in at least 5 guilds. If you play with someone who you think is good, ask them about their guild. I’ve found 2 of my guilds that way.

Crafting needs to be done at a crafting station, there’s a set in each town. You need to have Master Crafter NPC activate a craft for you. Once a craft is activated, you can use materials you gather or buy from the trading post to make things and level the craft at the crafting station.

There are a bunch of things that can be applied to upgrade slots. Gems, sigils, runes, medallions are all things that can upgrade certain items. There’s also accessories "(rings, earrings, back pieces, necklaces) that are made from gems and are separate from upgrade components.

Traits and skills are how you build your character’s focus – direct damage, condition damage, support, tanking, etc. You’ll want to read the wiki page on them.

Last but not least, to get back to the PvE maps click on the PvP icon at the top left of your screen, the same one you clicked on to enter the PvP area. The PvP will have a button that says Leave the Mists or something similar, that will put you back into the PvE map.

Good luck!

Don’t get frustrated!

I had a tough time getting into the groove of this game after 8 years of WoW, it literally took me a couple of weeks to play it for more than about an hour or so every 3-4 days.

Then I was like you, I wanted some answers and found them here and on the wiki page.

I gave the game a solid try, took my time, explored everywhere and was in utter amazement at how incredible this game looks.

Once I got the basics down, created a couple of professions that I wanted to try, often deleting and recreating with different races to find the right combination I had in mind and now…it’s like crack and it’s great. (disclaimer: crack is not great, it’s a terrible thing and illegal, gw2 however is great and legal)

What is crafting, how does one do crafting?
Crafting is the process of making items. Weapons, armor, accessories and food. You’re probably best off reading the wiki page for this one because there’s a lot to cover but in brief:

You start by picking a crafting profession by speaking to a master of that craft and asking to learn it. Then you need to gather useful materials (the crafting station panel and the masters can give you an idea of what you need) and then start making things. As you improve your crafting skills you will unlock more options and can make increasingly powerful items. You can either use these items yourself or sell them to merchants/other players. You will need to make far more than you could use to level up but at the end of it you’ll be able to make your own end-game gear.

I see craft items, i mine rocks, chop trees for what?
These give you the raw materials you use for crafting. You can also get some by salvaging drops from enemies. Not all of them are used by every profession so if you’re only wanting to use a few crafting professions you might want to sell the ones you won’t need (the wiki can tell you which ones your profession uses).

I see upgrade slots on my armor, I assume they are for jewelry pieces, where do i get those?
You can use either gems or runes to upgrade your armor and weapons. Gems can sometimes be found while mining ore (or trees for amber) and runes can be made by armor crafters or found on armor that drops from enemies. (Like most things you can also buy both from the Trading Post.)

Potions how do i get that?
Some of them you will find in the world or be given as quest rewards. Most can be made by chefs (one of the crafting professions), or you can buy them from other players. In my guild people levelling cooking will often leave potions in the guild bank for anyone who wants them, but that will vary between guilds.

Click on PvP did the training, go into a map, window open gives me three option, one is travel , i click travel and go nowhere, what should i do?
Sorry I can’t help with this one, I haven’t done much PVP and I can’t get into the game right now to check.

How do i get back to pve map?
Look for a pink swirling portal (asura gate). This will lead to Lions Arch and from there you can either walk/waypoint to where you want to be or use one of the other portals to go to one of the starting cities.

Traits points?
Trait points are like the stat points found in most games. You earn points as you level up (from level 11 onwards) and then you can choose which trait line to assign them to. Each trait line will improve two of your stats to make your character stronger and for every 5 or 10 points you also get a passive bonus (for example an extra effect on your attacks or gaining health regeneration when your health drops).

Before you can do that you’ll need to buy a trait manual from a trainer for your profession. Trainers can be found in each city and are marked on the map with a book symbol.

At first I’d recommend just assigning them to whichever trait sounds the most useful. As you level up and get a better feel for your character and what kind of build you want you’ll know where to put them, but you can change your traits at any time by talking to a trainer so it’s not a problem if you decide you need to re-do them.

Skill points?
You earn 1 skill point each time you level up, and once you hit level 80 you earn an additional one each time you earn the same amount of XP it took to go from level 79 to 80. So you can get an infinite number of them. You can also get more by doing skill point challenges which are dotted around the map and marked with a blue icon.

You use them to unlock new skills to put in the utility slots (keys 7-9) and later the elite skill slot (0). At first only a few skills will be available but more are unlocked as you buy them. Each tier uses slightly more skill points so at first you’ll be able to buy a skill every level but later you’ll need to save them up.

If you accidentally click the wrong skill, or buy one and then decide you don’t like it don’t worry. As I said you can get an infinite number of points so eventually you will have more than enough to buy all the skills. But it is worth trying to pick good skills because it will make levelling easier.

Skill points are also used as a currency to buy certain items in the game, including some components for a legendary weapon.

I got a guild invite so i joined, how do join other guild, only by invite?
Yes.

How you get an invite depends on the guild, each one will have their own rules on who they invite to join them. Some might have open recruitment, meaning they’ll advertise in map chat and other public places and let anyone join. Others have specific requirements and might require you to apply to join or will only recruit people they know.

If you want to find other guilds your best bet is to decide what kind of a guild you want to be in and then look through forums and fan sites to find one that suits you and see what their membership requirements are.

You can also make your own guild by speaking to a guild registrar in a town, but that can be expensive and if you want to make a big, successful guild it can be extremely time-consuming as well because you need to not only recruit players but make sure you give them an incentive to stay. I wouldn’t recommend it until you’ve got more experience with the game.

I don’t wish to bug some one everytime i got a question.
Honestly, don’t worry about it. If someone doesn’t want to answer they won’t. But you’re just as likely to find someone like me who has nothing better to do (I’m sitting here waiting for the family to arrive for a New Years dinner) who is happy to answer.

You can either ask here, or in /map or /say chat in-game, or ask your guild.

Phaseman, it sounds to me like you just need to find someone willing to spend an hour or so with you on a voice chat program like Mumble, Teamspeak or Ventrilo (think Skype but for games, runs in the background while you play so you can talk to team-mates) while playing that can explain things as you go along. I think that would be less frustrating for you and much quicker in showing you the ropes of mmo/online RPGs.

It’s not much to worry about. Everyone has been there at some point or another in some game.

Crafting, even weapons, at first can seem a bit confusing. After you’ve gotten some of the steps down it becomes rather easy.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Weaponsmith

The main combination you need to remember for weapons is:
*You’ll need a handle of sorts (like Small Green Haft)
*You’ll need a weapon side of sorts (like Bronze Axe Blade)
*You’ll need some sort of inscription (like a version of the Bronze or Green Inscriptions)

The last part is the more complex part for some beginning crafters.
The first two parts (handle and weapon side) are usually crafted by taking planks of a specific type of wood and a specific type of metal ingot.

So let’s make up a quick example with the Malign Bronze Axe that is listed in this link:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Bronze_Axe

For this weapon you’ll need three items:
*Bronze Axe Blade: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Bronze_Axe_Blade
*Small Green Haft: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Small_Green_Haft
*Malign Green Inscription: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Malign_Green_Inscription

You could buy these at the trading posts if you have the coin, but if you want to save that money you could craft them.
Each of these things needs to be made from raw materials you’ve gathered or bought.

You can easily find out what is needed for each item by clicking on it in the Crafting Pane. Once you have all three items created, then you can use those items to craft the weapon if it is in your Crafting Pane.

What if I don’t have it listed in my Crafting Pane? That’s where the Discovery Tab comes into place. The Discovery Tab works like the Mystic Forge in the sense that you add three things together and something should come out as a result assuming those things do go together.

In the Discovery Pane you would add in your Bronze Axe Blade, Small Green Haft, and Malign Green Inscription. If you are on the right track, the Discovery Pane should tell you if an item will result from this and allow you to hit Craft.

When you do this, you’ve just discovered a new thing to make!

Elona, Land of the Golden Sun….and undead…and poison. The travel brochure lied okay?!

There are so many thing you can do in this game besides running around do heart quests, but I just don’t know how.

I am really starting to think this game just isn’t for me. Its difficult finding things to read when my English is not my main language, most thing on GW2 are in English.

Anyway Rant over, will give it a few more days.

First wanted to address the language barrier issue, I don’t know what your native language is, but you could try running the game in another language. I don’t know how much of the texts are properly converted or if your language is even supported, but it certainly can’t hurt to try. I believe you can change your language preference on your options menu (press ESC in game or click the options tab in the character select screen). You can change the text language as well as the voice language. Also, if you’re in EU try to get on EU servers so that you’ll find people playing closer to the same times of day you are.

Second, for crafting, it took me literally 2 months to finally figure it out. And watching the videos and reading the tutorials only mildly helped, I had to just play around with it myself until i got it, but once i had it, it was so easy I wondered how I missed it before and now it’s my favorite part of the game. You’ll need someone to walk you through it in-game and link things in chat to help clarify. If I happen to catch you online I’ll see if I can help out.

Lastly, as far as things to do in the map, there are things called “dynamic events” that occur on their own throughout the world. These usually have no indicator on the map unless you get really close, so the best thing to do is just wander around and you’ll run into some. When you do these events, stick around because there might be more after it leading to a “chain” of events. DE’s (dynamic events) are the main source of leveling in the game and a lot more fun than grinding hearts all day. Hang in there, the more time you spend with the game, the easier and more comfortable it becomes and before you know it, the whole thing flows so smooth you’ll forget ever being lost.

It is a bit off a different game then your traditional MMORPG and Anet doesn’t take you by the hand and show you all that there is to be done. You get a few blocks off text to read in the very beginning off the game, and then you are on your own.
But as Nay said, stick with it, do the DE’s (the best exp comes from them in my opinion) and check to see you do your daily stuff (Hero screen, last button on the left, choose daily) as they also give you a thing to focus on and some nice exp, gold, carma and mistyc coin as a reward.
Stick with it and you’ll get soon the hang off it, it took me more then 2 monts to get things going for me, and i’m still learning stuff every day, after more then 3 months off gaming.

You can’t be the slowest. I’m currently holding the record for taking longest time (3 months+) to discover that you can draw a dick on mini-map (Please don’t ban me Anet, I swear I only drew it once and will never draw one again :p )

This is my 4th mmo, but GW2 has the friendliest & most mature community among the 4. Most players here are willing to guide you along and will even bust their kitten to revive you if they are nearby. Pay attention to world chat for shout outs on ongoing events or request for partying, just be willing to jump in and you will most likely never be lost again.
