guys.
no one is FORCING you to buy your own server.
also, you can actually join forces with other players to buy/mantain a CA with the settings you want (deathmatch, duel, standard, whatever).
if a 5man team bought a CA, it would cost them just 4€ each for the starter kit, and then they would split manteinance costs…it would be something like 2€/month for each person.
I really think that’s hardly too much, considering that back in the day my team and I had to pay like 25€/month (7€ each since it was a 4 man team) to rent a FPS server.
btw, yeah, you can make gold from dyes XD
Do you need a Custom Server? No
Do you want a Customer Server? YesYou can always play ball at the public park, but if you want your own hoop at home then it ain’t free. IMO, that cost for CA is reasonable. Not everyone needs their own server, and the cost to maintain it can easily be shared. Likely it will be shared anyways unless you like to play alone.
Can you make money in sPVP? Yes
Do you need money in sPVP? NoUse your glory/chest to make dyes. Sell it for gold. I’ve made enough to get toys and character expansion slot. Its not the same as farming PVE CoF, but as a PVPer you have very little need for gold. The gear is all free.
+1
I make a lot of gold of dyes. Sometimes I wonder how may pvper even take the time to craft dyes and sell them.
Sometimes I wonder how many people dont consider that rng is random…
100 dyes that sell for 1 silver each isnt going to pay for a weeks worth of CA time.
guys.

You’re absolutely right. They are only making it very difficult to play with the people you want to play with, and then offering a paid service to do just that. It’s completely normal. /sarcasm

Again… servers arent going away, there are plenty of open and abandoned ones. Just go there.

It actually is.
And please remember, that other mmorpgs (the good ones, not those kittenty f2p korean games), offer you a non-optional paid service just to log in the game servers
no1 is forcing you to pay for a custom arena but its a basic feature that most of the games have it for free … (yes most of the rts games some fps games mobas and many other type of games)
its not about the money becouse every1 has 20$ to buy their own room, the problem is that what they say and what they do. i tougth that with gems the only thing that u were going to be able to buy was just cosmetics, does a CA looks like a cosmetic to you?.
if u buy em you are just a cow

They never ever said the Gem Store was going to be purely cosmetic. Its not their fault that you failed to read anything about the Gem Store or look at any of the options in GW1 store to realize some functionality that enhances but is not required to play this game to the fullest would be sold there.
This model is fine, but the basic idea of being unable to support it through actual in-game pvp (i.e. you have to pve) is where it falls through. There should be some support/access opportunity to it just through playing pvp (i.e. make the daily chest have a 5% chance to just drop 1 day token).
Also, they could have completely monetized the arena itself to help support this (custom color text when searching for a server, pay to have access to admins, pay to have custom doodads and/or objects in the arena, etc).
Just feels like they dropped the ball here in putting out what the customer wants while also satisfying their requirement of earning income through pvp. I would have much preferred to have it stay in beta for them to build/add these features to get players actually excited/back into pvp.

You don’t want to know how many of these games use a P2P network model.
There are just a handful of games which offer you dedicated servers without having to pay for them.
Especially FPS games either use P2P networking or hosted dedicated servers, which have some nice pricetags.
Also, don’t forget Mobas are a maximum of 10 players.
So 10 players sending data, which has to be summitted to 9 (or 10 depending on the netcode) players.
Adding more (GW2 custom arenas support up to 20) increases the traffic exponentially.

Can CustomArena Starter kits be in BlackLion Chests ?
1 month = 40 laurel =40 x3 tier 6 fine materials = tp = gold
Just PvP errrday and you gain laurels.
Or have time to level up a warrior and do CoF so you earn gold faster.
Or Better Play Prized tourneys and win them. SOAC, MMORPG.com Mist League, etc.
(edited by alcopaul.2156)
1 month = 40 laurel =40 x3 tier 6 fine materials = tp = gold
120 t6 x 20s average price = 24 gold
(24 gold / 3.2 average conversion) x 100 gems = 750 gems
I could live with a currency like that; it encourages the immediate purchasing of an arena (with cash) and helps supplement continued funding of one. Only concern of course is if you cross over in pve and want ascended gear. Almost a good system imo, just a few flaws.
Almost a good system imo, just a few flaws.
There are a few flaws indeed, but the fact of the matter is you don’t have to set foot in PvE to more or less fund a custom arena. The T6 mats from laurels will fund it for you and while they are tied to PvE, their value is fairly stable because they have constant and wanted sinks in game that drain them at a regular rate. Yes, it would be ideal to be able to use billions of glory for it but the less than ideal case is far from hard.

yeah ok just say moo please
I think it’s fair that people have concerns about it. The concerns allow Anet to reevaluate anything that may seem a bit out of place or over exaggerated. The price could be reduced a bit, but I do understand why Anet has that price point.
At any rate, it’s true that you’re not being forced to pay for it, and if enough people aren’t paying, then Anet will take a look at how they can correct the issue.
Just to clarify:
It’s actually significantly cheaper than a sub fee. The $20 you spend is the initial cost. It could also cost $10 + Gold, or no money at all if you have enough gold.
Once you have a server, it costs 480 gems for 20 days, 960 for 40 days, 1440 for 60 days. That’s less than $10/mo if only one person is supporting the server. Anyone can apply time to servers. Also, don’t forget you can convert gold to gems.
Just to clarify:
It appears that the majority’s issue is that SPvP players don’t have a reliable way to earn gold to convert to gems. It is kind of odd to expect SPvP players to have to purchase gems with $, considering PvE players are able to earn the gold needed to purchase anything they wish from the cash shop.
aaaaaaalms… alms for the poor?
alms? s’cuse me sir, could you spare a copper or two for ole nak ere to fund his server?
….
In the real world, what do you do when you want something? You pay for it. Hoe do you pay for it? You earn money. How do you earn money? You get a job.
What Anet just told us is the PVE = a job, and PVP is extra-curricular.
Isn’t that nice?

ooo thanks for the clarification Allie !!!
hmmm i guess hybrid PvE/WvW/sPvP players will have more gold to convert into gems.

Don’t want to sound rude, but how exactly are you making gold from PvP?
Exactly, I guess the idea is to be part of a guild. Make friends who will support the arena. Many of the friends i have that pve, dont pvp. I dont think ill be getting one soon, but it would be nice to have. I wvw for coin and fun, so maybe you should try that.
I personally think the gem prices for these items are fine. But whey would you delete a server after a while when it runs out of charge? Even in a subscription game, a person just needs to recharge their account to resume playing. I don’t understand why the servers aren’t just hidden from the list when their grace period expires instead of being completely deleted!!!

I don’t even play SPvP.. but is this a serious response? It is $20 on top of the $60 ($50 now) purchase of the game, plus a ~$10/month fee. Sure, that’s cheaper than sub fees for most other MMOs.. but most other MMOs you are paying $15/month for access to the ENTIRE game, not to have access to a private PvP room.
And yes. Gold to gems is an option. Too bad SPvP isn’t a way to get gold.
Come to WvW where the cost is zero gems.

Translation: Take out your wallet and bend over.
You pay for your name/custom message to be posted out there.
Say I make an arena called “John The Awesome Loves Mary Three Times A Day” or “Your Math Teacher [MATH] IWAY room: Warriors only no armor.” all people will see this.
Or a GW2 player could propose to her gamer fiance by making a custom arena “Jen Honey Sugar, Will You Marry Me?”
Or prolly a roleplayer would setup a Custom Arena to be the “Tyrian Church” where weddings among toons are held, prolly in spirit watch.
Or prolly a Custom Arena called “e-Brothel” where Erotic RPing/Cybering are held, passworded of course (patrons pay gold for the entry.)

- 2 people easily pay for a server for as long as you would want to from laurels > heavy crafting bags > gold > gems alone.
- You can also convert karma/chests into random dyes. You’ll get some gold, and you might even get lucky with a really rare dye!
- You can also play the rest of the game (PvE, WvW) and make some gold for gems.
- You can also ask other players if you can use their custom server (for duels, scrims, idk why else you would need your own?) Lots of people, including myself, will let you use their servers when we’re not using them. Ask. I’m willing to bet all of my gems/gold that more people come on the forum to complain about this rather than even trying to ask people that have servers.
- You can also spend some real life money (gasp) if you can’t/won’t do one of the multiple in-game ways of obtaining access to a custom arena.
Also realize that you don’t need to buy a server to play in one! You can still queue up for tournaments, and there are even servers that you can duel people/do small skirmishes.
It also might be a good idea to join a big guild, or a big group of people, in order to get a server that you want!

100 dyes that sell for 1 silver each isnt going to pay for a weeks worth of CA time.
If you open 100 dyes and only get 100 common dyes for 1silver each then something is wrong or you have terribad luck or RNG.
I make a batch of 25 dyes ever 2-3 days just from tourney chests alone.
(Tip: Salvage them while waiting for match to start)
Alternatively if you don’t tourney, buy the cheap 200glory chest.
On average:
Easily net me at least 1-2g every few days, but usually more.
Iam glad we have the option to have custom arenas, and many of the above post tell you how to get gold. Keep the good stuff comin a net.

A facepalm would not be enough . . .
Just let the thing die already.
They think sPvP players also are playing PvE to make gold there(if not they need to buy gems like the players that play PvE but don’t farm that much). And maybe they want sPvP-only players to play PvE so they also start to buy PvE stuff from the store.
Someone explained about making colors… but this is a pain. Salvaging stuff needs to be made easier and faster. Or just give an option to turn the chests directly into materials. Like putting 3 chests and 1 dust into MF gives you dust… instead of opening the chest… salvaging(click… confirm annoying dialoque because the items are “exotic”) then crafting the colors.
People should start reading the forums before whining, USE LAURELS!!! you don’t play any pve??? ok you have tons of laurels unused!!!! use for heavy crafting materials!! find a friend or two and this is even better
1 month=40 laurels= 40×3 tier 6 fine materials= trading post=gold=gems
2 friends = 2xgold….etc
Most stupid idea I have ever heard. Using laurels you can use to get unique stuff(you can only buy with laurels) to buy crappy stuff which drops everywhere. I’m not a PvP-only player – so it does not concern me that much.
But I think there might as well be a few PvP-only players that just want the Cat Tonic(which takes 100 laurels) and both pets(75 laurels each) just for fun to walk around somewhere when they don’t to PvP(which does not mean they are doing PvE then… they are just doing nothing having fun with the tonic).
Okay… if you have everything important… tonic and the 2 pets. Then you could buy that crafting stuff
u guys missing the point, ever played Combat Arms?
Want moderator privileges in the room? pay
want to kick someone straight forward? pay
I know you havey pvpers want to play the game for free but this won’t happens.
As someone said 20€ for a private server is not much, and 9€ to mantain is even less.
thinkin about moving to australia (from italy). well here in italy 9€ is two pack of cigs, in uk is barely 1 pack and n australia is like half!
as i see it, every customarena opened is avirtual server dedicated to you, so it will be there waiting, that you play o not, and mostly with limitations, so nobody but you and your guil/friends will use those already allocated resources.
i know that it will be far les than the price you pay, but in this case therìs also a cost involved, ram, cpu disk space electricity bills, connection andwidth and so on.
Since this is only area where pvp can make moneys for them, you are not suposed to buy a custom arena from beginning, unless you really use it for tournament or guild stuff, but more important you cannot have it for free, and not even with in-game gold.
if was in 5€ range, now everyone would have it, and they would need a Google-style datacenter to handle that!
I guess this works like anESXI environment, with an automated virtual machine creation script, each arena is a virtual server itself.
You may have notice that when you create one it says that there can be some minutes of delay b4 it is available to play, imho isbcause the vm template is being aplied and booting up.
this is somehing really hard to handle, on a phisical sever they can overbook ofc, hoping that not all vm are on at sme time, but you cannot exagerate.
For a guildof a decent size is a ridiculus price, ask a 1g donation to each member and you et it, make lottery and stack up money, or just drink two beer less this month since you think is so important.
for small guild made up by friends, hell just share, gold or irl cash .
and do not envy pvers cause we get gold, or you can get some “buy this crate to get a random possibility to get a custom arena token..lol!”
dont even know why ppl buy this – when i look atm EU (ok it isnt primetime) than i see there maby 100+ “public” server but only in 4-5 are 2 or 3 ppl
alot buy this to be cool or just to have one and in reality noone ever will use this – waste of gems
Just let the thing die already.
This…definately. If you want to go arenas just don’t join guild’s ones..go for standard servers, those arenas are 90% owned by pve heroes just to put their guild name on server list, leave them empty and they’re soon going back to dungeons and arena’s kits are going to die. Problem solved.
Maybe they would understand their mistakes watching their new features failing badly…well probably not, but we must try anyway…if noone from pvp is going to pay a sigle cent until they bring pvp out of beta maybe they would move their azzez…

Time to make sPVP free2play. Remove the need to purchase the PVE game to play PVP. That’s necessary to bring in players.

They can just do what they did back in GW1, which is to sell a PvP-only version of the game for a much, much cheaper price. This could work well in GW2, to boost the PvP playerbase and even increase sales if they later decide to upgrade to the Full Game Version.
Is that true that my CA gets deleted if i don’t buy time to it for 2 weeks?…
Deleting my 1600 gem item for going on a holiday? Seems legit. Just remove it from the hotjoin browser if it is not working instead of leaving 5357 broken servers in the browser waiting for complet delete…
This is not the ArenaNet I once knew. This way less people will buy your arenas, because they will think twice.
It gets me mad not to know about important details, we will have to figure these out I guess by our own 1600 gem costing experience… and still no answers.

Most online games with “arenas” or “rooms” give the possibility to create own room with no fee at all.
Why GW2 has a fee AND this fee is expensive too?

I can’t, for the life of me, think of a single MMO that has such a feature. Care to enlighten me of any MMO that offers the ability (without a subfee) for one to be able to host their own, custom rule arena? Otherwise we’re just saying other games offer hotjoins… but hotjoins offer hotjoins.

u cant see spvp as an mmo since the only similar thing that spvp has with mmo are armor/weapons with stats.
u know CA should be free… tournaments however they should cost gems to enter.

FPS – host on your own machine if you want a custom server and need fast enough upload speeds to properly host one, otherwise you pay
RTS – not really servers, one machine hosts or you connect to a central location… that how it HAS to work or you dont have any game at all
MOBA I dont have enough experience with to make a statement on.
Regardless, you basically said that because other unrelated genres have ‘servers’ without fees that this genre needs it too? Why exactly is that?

FPS – normal rooms are hosted on game server, not on player’s machine. And custom server, yes you’re right, but custom arenas on GW2 are not that “custom” to justify the price.
RTS – yes and so? Matches are hosted on the server, why can’t be here the same?
Basically ArenaNet is NOT providing a total customizable arena, it has only basic options. They are just trying to monetarize it somehow.
Honestly, I’m kind of sad to see this thread. In my opinion the price for hosting a server is fair because multiple people can split the cost. That being said they need to add a moderator functionality to the server system, so more that just the person who bought the starter-kit can kick/ban people, change maps, ect.
