I need something to sate my taste for PvP in MMOs – GW2 has been it for the past (quick /age) 1,045 days or so. I’ve got quite a few hours and PvP games played, participated and won a few tournaments. But Conquest has lost its flavor due to the kitten poor leaderboard, and Stronghold currently plays more like a crappy MOBA than Guild Wars. Trying to be original and innovate here isn’t necessary, just take what you have and work with it.

The reason why 5v5 TDM in Courtyard is such an absolute failure is because the games are rarely evenly matched. Nobody has fun in a 500-50 game. Take this awful implementation out. Anet, you’ve heard our plea about TDM once, listen this time and I can’t imagine it not paying off.


I’m just gonna cut the fluff here and show you how to implement 2v2, 3v3 TDM support and make it hugely popular:

- Once you die, you don’t respawn. Once your entire team is dead, the game is over. Time to queue up again. Quick, rapid fire games that are easy to watch, easy to queue for, that you can play a few of before you have to head out to work or something. This way you don’t have a cluster**** like Courtyard currently is – there’s a clear gameplan when you go into each fight.

- Cut pieces of the maps we currently have, put spawn points in locations close to where you want us to fight. Ideas other than the Legacy midpoint or Courtyard would be Skyhammer’s point B, Forest’s Keep, Temple’s Gate, Khylo’s Clocktower, and where the Orb spawns for Spirit Watch. All of these maps have great small-team fight potential, with areas to run around and line of sight capabilities.

- Team support to queue with one or two friends. You can ONLY queue the ranked/leaderboard queue with a premade team. No more ranked solo queue. This will create a community around the game mode and eliminate long queue times. To balance this, make a ‘skirmish’ unranked option where you can

- A working leaderboard that only works off of wins, not games played or points earned. Personal MMR and Team MMR should both be a thing – you could infuse Guilds into this – create rivalries not just between players but their guilds too.

- My favorite part of 2v2 and 3v3 support would be the creation of group compositions. You suddenly have more people theory crafting how to properly fight with their friends rather than by themselves. Their builds in conquest suddenly revolve around meshing well with their teammates. Arenas, if they accomplish anything, create incredible communities.

GW2 has the best combat system currently on the MMO market for PvP. It blows WoW’s current “set-up CC-pop cooldowns and burst-repeat” meta out of the water, and thousands of people still play WoW arenas just because it has a supported leaderboard and it’s fun to kill other players with your friends. The top WoW players are really unhappy with Arenas right now because they’re so rinse and repeat based. GW2 has no rinse and repeat mechanics – GW2 Arenas would take the best part of Conquest (the team fights) and artificially make them happen.

cool thing is Anet usually listens if you beg hard enough. we got courtyard, why not this?

And when I say “designed around 5vs5” I’m talking about how class design and balancing are concerning that: chances of class combination, AoE vs Dueling capability mix in a team, support mix, combination of cleaving class and single target class in a team, and so on. not to mention how it would change the feel of the game’s pvp aspect overall. Allowing 2vs2 or 3vs3 would result in players trending toward small dueling, single target classes.

Of course, they can allow 2vs2 or 3vs3 match in a single click. but will they? I don’t think so. I can imagine kittenloads of stealth mes and thief clustering on 2vs2 3vs3 rooms. And that doesn’t sound healthy for the game as a whole.

Don’t be fooled, the game is designed around PvE, not PvP; conquest is designed around 5v5. Change is not a scary thing. This trend would only affect those queues. Maybe this would also be another opportunity to address stealth, as they have been showing signs of it with recent traits.

I know entire guilds that would come back specifically to do rated 2s and 3s arenas.

Anet has like 20 people working for them right now. Your ideas are good, but I really doubt they have the manpower to put them into reality.

Those queues are in game and they will still affect the game’s overall feel. And it’s not gonna be just stealth. It will be everything. To balance any aspects of the game according to new modes will fragment the contents even further. How you gonna balance something that’s good for small scale, 5vs5 and big scale all at the same time?

There’s a reason why anet insists on what we have right now. But if you so insist, buy a custom arena token. And you can have your 2v2 3v3.

I would love a kind of arena gameplay element. Best example would be wow. It was very fun and fast. You can play with a friend or two. Small maps, no capture points, just the last man standing rule

Those queues are in game and they will still affect the game’s overall feel. And it’s not gonna be just stealth. It will be everything. They would have no affect other than to their respective queues, because you wouldn’t use a 2s arena build in conquest, unless you are looking for a loss. Define, everything. I think you’re just over reacting to something that would be healthy for the game. The solution would be to hire more people with actual knowledge of the game. The same could be said for stronghold fragmenting the user base, and they added that.

Custom arena’s are NOT rated 2s and 3s arenas.
