Bring back Countryard!!!
I did not like it but i +1 on this. At least in unranked having a bit of variety is a good thing . I can understand you can not have it in ranked becouse builds for a such map should be a little bit different from builds on conquest and so , if you get this map randomly the match is meaningless. But in unranked, imho , it is better to have more maps. If my build is not ok for that map … and i lose , in unranked, it is not a great problem. Unranked is for having fun

Courtyard was the only real PvP map. We need more different styled PvP maps, rather than the current ‘capture the flag’ maps.

Little changes in the map to make it a little more “open”, granting to more classes to be viable in that area.
A bonus to “capture” in the middle of the map would also be appreciate, something to force players to show they’re face in the central area.

I would love deathmatch, not only on this map, but an option for all. Down state is a waist of time where now the meta is to let ppl bleed to death if they have no allies around.

Make it a annhilation map (also if you die you dont respawn) with rounds (best of 3 or best of 5).
A pure deathmatch just doesnt work.
Also if Team DM have it be a separate q option like stronghold that way people that like Stronghold, conquest, or Team deathmatch, can q for all of the above they want to q for.

Back when HOT was launching, you talked about an instanced PvP arena for guild halls that would provide greater room and functionality compared to the one we have now.
As you bring back Courtyard, consider using it for that purpose – and, if possible, let guilds place obstacles, traps, etc in a guild version.
I know it’s probably not the feedback expected, but some of haven’t forgotten the discussion about guild pvp arenas from HOT launch – and this seems like the perfect way to use Courtyard – giving it a place in the game without compromising PVP tournaments/competitive play.

I didn’t get a chance to play it so I can’t speak for changes to it, but please no mechanics. What GW2 sorely lacks is a PvP map that is all about PvP, no special objectives. No special mechanics. A map that is just pure player vs player, and from what I have heard this is exactly what Courtyard was. If you add a new mechanic to it then you just destroy this. If you bring it back, and I hope you do, please for the love of god don’t add any mechanics or special objectives to it.
I am not a super fan of courtyard but have no issues on having it on unranked. And i actaully do not want anything to be changed with it because it is the only map were it is just about the players and nothing else but that. Would be nice to keep at least one map without gimmicks.
I like the idea behind courtyard. Id like the map to be a little bigger. So that a team can actually get the distance to regroup if they have the mobility to do so.
The map in its current form is great for an individual player to dissapear. But only at the cost of his team who are too cramped in with the other team to really break off.
On this note i have two ideas.
One is to make the map a bit bigger. Around 20% But keep the same general structure. This gives teams a bit more room to manuever. And allows classes that require set up to start (staff eles for example) the room they need to begin casting while watching for x thief or guardian teleport.
The other is to make the map taller add a whole nother level on top of the current one that looks down on the field. But can be reached via stairs or a small jumping puzzle like series of posts around the outer edge of the arena. Vertical play opens up alot of possibiliities as far as comps go.
The main reason I stopped playing TDM was because it largely became a murderball fest. The two groups would grp together and htens mash into eachother and whichever team had the better composition won the entire game. As that five would just camp the enemy teams spawn and demorilize there opponents.
A big part of why this was so succesful is that it fealt like you couldn’t ever get a non murderball comp the room it needed to manuever. Kiting out that ball and slowing down/sniping individual members (peeling the onion) is a pretty good way to tear it apart. But courtyard in its current form doesn’t really have the ease of manuverability necessary for a player to get out of the way without sacrificing other members of his team.
Courtyard is perfectly fine.
The problem is that Courtyard is a Team Deathmatch map with Kill Count rules that has been put together with Conquest maps in the same queue.
It is not a Conquest map, and it cannot be in the Conquest list. It must be filtered separately like Stronghold.
And since people will stack more in this mode, and we have several balance problems involving builds that work too well when players just stack and spam stuff almost mindlessly, it can’t be put on ranked until that’s fixed. But in unranked it’s not only welcomed, it’s needed.
More Team Deathmatch and Stronghold maps would also be nice, with their own unique map design or map mechanical quirks. But Courtyard is fine at it is.
It doesn’t need map mechanics, it doesn’t need redesigns, It needs its own separate queue filter like stronghold. That’s all.

Came here to say this. If this one change were made, Courtyard would be awesome and I would absolutely want it back. It’s critical that we remove the “trickle killing” and spawn camping that can happen currently.
Stretch the map and please change the color scheme. It’s so obnoxious.

Courtyard is a team deathmatch map, it doesn’t need extra objectives within the map itself. But it really needs what Nina was saying, in this way you can:
- Stop disorganized people streamlining towards enemy team who thinks they can be 1vX Rambo. (even more evident when guild team/comm against pugs)
- Prevent spawn camping
- Allow more room for opener skills like shadow refuge/veil or boon stacking (empowerment etc)
- Attract many roamers in WvW who don’t like to see zerg or blob actions

After a huge part of the Skyhammer and Capricorn reworks were about lessening the impacts of their unique mechanics… actually no, thanks. All good. :P
If it’s going to be kept 5v5 the map needs to be enlarged a bit, though if you want to change it up without changing the size of the map, make it a supported 2v2 or 3v3 map no respawn, with its own queue option. Short and sweet matches by making it the best of 3 with about a 2 minute time limit per round max, 2:30 if 2 minutes seems a bit short. If time runs out the team with the lowest combined health percentage loses.
Edit: I wanted to add that changing it from Deathmatch wouldn’t be so bad considering pretty much hotjoin in essences is played like deathmatch already.

Definitely would like to see Courtyard back. Hopefully even getting a queue by it, like Stronghold has. Sure would revive the map. Maybe add it to Stronghold queue, as Deathmatch and Conquest don’t really go well together, but Stronghold and Deathmatch kind of can.
I would also like to see some more open spaces on it, like Battle of Champion’s Dusk has.
it’s a cool map, but for team deathmatch? no thank you. it’s so small, that whichever team has the first death usually wipes shortly after and therefore gets spawn-camped or close to it
I hated it, so as long as it had an opt out (like Stronghold) I don’t really mind.
Please no deathmatch, I’m still traumatized by the last time courtyard was in rotation.

The map just needs to be expanded, it is just too small, even for TDM, then side objectives could be a thing.

Would like to see more game modes, but hate team deathmatch and would rather not see courtyard come back as tdm. Unless of course I can avoid queuing for it.
I also agree it needs something to counter-act snowballing/spawncamping after the first defeat. Doing that through an extra mechanic could be interesting. But just doing rounds would probably be easiest since it avoids balancing issues.
But the biggest thing Courtyard needs is to not be in the same queue as the other maps. The recent problems with Capricorn and Coliseum – people hating on each other for map selection choices – was kinda like when Courtyard was originally in the unranked map pool. It needs to be treated as a different game mode, because it is. So give it a separate checkbox, just like the Stronghold and Conquest options, and then we can all be happy playing it or not playing it as per personal preferences.

Courtyard was fun because it was pure PvP… Player vs Player. Yes it could steam roll but that’s not the maps problem, it was the Matchmaking. Players who didn’t keep charging 1 by 1 to their death could stop the steam roll.

Since so many have chimed in saying they hated Courtyard, I’ll add my 2 cents in that I loved courtyard. Probably because my main was a team-fight-friendly meditation/symbols/team-retaliation-spam guardian. I seemed to win a very disproportionate percent of the time.
Anyway I think the suggestions to change it to respawning as a team instead of as an individual are right on the money. Courtyard matches were often EXTREMELY lopsided because whatever team was losing would often stay “outmanned” as they would always have a player or two or three respawning.
Either do that, or maybe have an arrow cart near each respawn point, so that each team has an advantagous point to rally from if the enemy tries to pin them down at their respawn.
Maybe throw in some gliding skills, kind of like the Shatterer fight, to make it interesting?
Totally off-topic but I would also like to see them breathe some life into Obsidian Sanctum.

Yeah, I guess. I get the walls and everything, it’s to LoS your enemies and vice versa. That’s a good thing.
It’s just in that endeavor, the map ends up feeling cramped, like you’re in a corridor. It’s a courtyard. It should be a little more spacious, but keeping that basic idea in mind.
It’s good to have stuff to hide behind.
It forces thinking and repositioning and God knows some of the players I get teamed up with could do to learn how to position themselves better.
But, yah… I also don’t want to fight in a corridor either. Something something wanting my cake and eating it.
