'Cheesy builds' for newbies? :)

Why, because it’s better to have people with more experience and stronger builds beating the snot out of people with both less experience and worse ones?
No, because it’s ruining the game for everyone.

Playing bad cheese builds is a sure fire way to never learn to play the game —→ when you get the inevitible nerf bat which takes about 2 months with anet you’ll quit the game because you can’t play anything else.
I’ve cut my teeth on mesmer and thief, not exactly easy classes for a newbie. I can handle taking a beating.
(I wonder how many of the people who will respond to this thread saying I shouldn’t play “cheese builds” are playing them themselves… )
I’d suggest you try the hambow warrior. It’s probably the most powerful of the cheese specs out there.

Both are very simple classes to cheese with, I don’t know where the got the impression they were hard to play. If you want a class that has a learning curve but is exceptionally rewarding when you know how to play it effectively, try engineer.
I sent you a PM.
play Minion Master build. really easy and strong. you can evil kill people with it naked. all you need to do is master timing you CC’s and you’re good to go. try it on hotjoins first but i’m sure it’s gonna do fantastic on tpvp too.
Minion master is good in tPvP only if you’re a really god player. Otherwise you get CCed to death or AOE wrecked and there’s not much you can do about it. Plus you have to learn to time sacrifices, CCs etc, so its not real easy high tier, but it can be effective still. On the other hand, in low tier pvp/starting out, its pretty easy to get going with because it’s made to “facetank” and leech health rather than avoid it a lot (due to lack of vigor/evades/blocks) so not having to worry as much about dodging in low tier combat, it works in your favor.

Pretty much this. As far as playing “well”, of course some have larger skill ceilings than others. Condition necro has a decently high skill ceiling for 1v1 cause in 1v1 they can be killed pretty easy, while MM is great 1v1 but harder in team fights. Hambow is like… always a winner, spirits are kind of too, just not as bad as Hambow.

Only time I die to a hambow is if I got two on me or he has a bunch of team mates zerging around with him.

Well, realistically, often times skill is still > build. (Or rock paper scissors in some cases, too), but point is, you can rarely go wrong with playing Hambow, it’s decently straight forward. The hardest parts is learning to combo/perfectly land CC chains. Easy or not all builds have skill gaps, and no build is absolutely immortal.
(Unless you count PU mesmers who run or perma stealth thieves)

Thanks for the replies (and PM).
I have a warrior at mid levels so a bit of familiarity there. Haven’t played necro yet but after getting destroyed by them a lot they intrigue me.
True or false: I’m better off leveling up a new class in PvE to get a good feel for its abilities before diving into PvP sight unseen? That’s the approach I’ve taken so far, though obviously it takes time.

Cool. You know, my p/d thief also never dies to anything. He is still utterly useless in spvp.

Hambow is not easy to play. You have to use your berserker stance wisely and make sure you land your cc’s and attacks well. Mellee class is never easy. People overestimate this class really bad. I hope people will stop calling a class OP just because they don’t know how to counter it.

Well if you weren’t braindead, and played it in top 50 pvp (like I have, was rank 13 until I stopped playing conquest due to boredom) you’d might know what you’re talking about. LOL XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

Okay, since I’m a newbie who’s never played a “hambow”, please tell me in one paragraph how to build and play it so I win most of the time.
This thread signifies the problem of Build Wars 2 – Making half-brained easy builds but not realising that there is more to the game than just 1v1 or 1v2. I hope I never see Qaelynn in solo or team Q.

Play something like ele or non bunker multikit engi -> compare it to hambow -> realize that your statement is absurdly far from the truth.

How many MM do you see in the top, I dunno, 200? There are FOTM builds that are easy, but MM isn’t one of them (the higher you go). I said yes, its easy to pick up, but there is a such thing as high skill floor, high skill ceiling. Most people just don’t understand that unless they spend a lot of time playing something to understand the downsides. And I mean REALLY playing it, not going in a 1v1 room and wrecking a few nubs because I already covered that.
Read the top part of this and you’ll understand why I like MM so much, read the pros and cons and internalize them. You have to realize having AI as a part of your build has severe downsides just as much as it has its upsides. But people ignore those facts and go for the throat. Its so easy to say something is easy if you never play it.
(Like wise I didn’t have much respect for thieves until I started playing one)

I’ll probably be the only one telling you the truth, since it seems people always hold some kind of grudge against a certain class. As of now it seems like warriors are the scapegoats.
Reality is, that just because there is suddenly a strong warrior build, that doesn’t mean the other classes are not kittened as well.
So my answer to you:
Pretty much every single build in the game is cheesy atm.
And this is due to how the combat works where spamming is key. No energy or cooldown management. No risk vs reward.
So. Just pick a standard meta necro/engi/warrior/guardian/ranger build and it will be cheesy.
Zaphiel Faires – DPS Guardian
take your pick.
Super cheese category: Hambow warrior, spirit ranger, s/d thief, condi necro.
Cheese but not as strong as before mentioned cheese: mm necro, pu mesmer(our new overlords of cheese past 10th december).
Traits/builds/skills that will continue to further make this game a piece of kitten: Diamond skin, fresh air, signet of vampirism, mesmer new signet, automated response.
As you see, you got a lot of options if you really want to explore all the cheesy mechanics of gw2. Have fun with this awesome game!
EDIT: Like the guy above me said, its all cheesy atm. Even less known and not as good specs, such as interrupt mesmer, are about complete cheese and rng.
(edited by ahuba.6430)
^ PU Mesmer will likely be in the top category after the 10th. They’re getting pretty buffed. :P

Yeah, all I care about is things being half-brained and easy. That’s why, as a new player, the only two characters I’ve leveled to 80 have been mesmer and thief. Because they’re just so simple to learn as a newcomer.
I’m going to keep playing both in PvP because I like playing both. But I thought it might be fun to try some of these “OP” builds I keep hearing about as well.
I’m skeptical about that mesmer heal. We’ll see.
Turret engi, mantra mesmer, spirit weapon guards, longsword rangers, staff warriors, and all ele builds are really cheese. Use those if you want to destroy everyone

There is a place for easy, powerful builds. Let people play how they like. Some people don’t have twitch skill, or fast reaction time, but they are good at overall team strategy.
They should have a build that gives them reasonable ability.
All of these “cheese buildds” can be countered, if you think about it longer and look for the weakeness. All builds have one.

I did better playing a warrior the other day where I only knew what about half of the buttons I was pressing did than I did today on my thief that I’ve build crafted and played with since the game was released.
I didn’t even know what build I was using for warr.

Thanks to those who responded seriously. I do have some experience with warrior so I’ll play with that a bit, though I suspect I’ll come back to mesmer and thief because they are more interesting in terms of playstyle.
Thief has some incredible cheese builds. Evasion-spam build, heartseeker/stealth build (just wait till people are low health, open on them, kill them, back to stealth).
The cheesiest of the cheese is obviously Warrior, but Thief can come pretty close purely due to stealth. Stealth/rogue-like classes are always very easy to play in MMO’s because you can just run away away if you mess things up.

i can play warrior, necro, mesmer and ranger. chasing a foe with a hammer is kinda tricky since its attacks are pretty slow. healing signet active heal is useless. once foes burst you in a team fight, you are dead. necro has spectral form, a ranger has the nature spirit and a mesmer has clones and teleport. go figure which one has better survivability.

So a warrior doesn’t have immunity’s, stuns and condi clears which make him recuperate from that burst ? not to mention they are a heavy class.
