The only counter to ele is thief with more blinks, With tempest defense being twice as powerful now and only 10 points for blasting staff, you just need to know how to fight thief.
To all the players that say “ele is useless” I say “you play it bad!!!”.
The dps power of the ele is very high and you can survive well.
Try that:
Staff and berserker build.
Foefire map (or Temple map).
Use teleport to go where the enemy can’t hit you melee and you’re hard to hit by ranged (isn’t alla that problem, if you know a little the map and use the teleport to go wherever you want).
Then shoot at the enemy by a safe place where you’re hard to hit.
You can do a very high damage, be unkillable and whit a bunker or a thief you can hold the mid easy just because the enemy don’t hit you.
If you kill ranger and necro first, your work is so easy that a noob can do it. Just kill everything by the distance.If you don’t find a way to kill the enemy, find a way to make you unkillable!
It’s strategy, no more.That strategy can’t win always and is weak against ranged, but whit only 2 utility skills (teleport and mistform) you become unkillable and can run away easy if the enemy is near to kill you.

tbh, since thief is not really that viable anymore, you could easily try playing ele, which is far stronger against current bullkitten meta builds, at least the S/F variant.

I know you get focused because staff ele aoe is the highest burst atm. And Like I said you just need to know thief 1v1 since its the only class with more blinks to catch up to you at all the blink locations.
In a good team with a good ele. Its not like this game is competitive.
You are right in theory. But in fact you just die always as ele.
You are at the side of a point and nuke. Let’s say khylo on clocktower. You stand up, because you dont want to get hit. Guess what? backstab. you are instantly dead.
Or let’s say he is an s/d thief. He kills you and you mistform mid and get rezzed just to be instant down again.
My team plays top 100 with an ele, we really know what the problem is.

Tbh i don’t think thieves will stay top tier for long ( it’s not that i see thieves so many thieves in EU, ya know): meta is shifting to “bunker yo easy mode” where the best target to focus are necros ( !! ) , spirit rangers, ( !!!!) and engies ( !!!!!!!), with maybe wars (!?!?!?!?) following, as long they don’t build with endure pain.
There’s no real target to focus anymore, the squishiest is necro ( which is not squishy at all) and we’re starting to play bunker game ( or decap game).
Thieves are starting to have no real impact on a fight and there’s very little you can do with your mobility if you’re no longer able to win the 1vs1 against 80% of the professions you’re going to face at side point ( which is very rarely left uncovered).
Thief is mobile and has team stealth, but aside that, you would be better bringing another engi-necro-war-ranger.
And in that situation, you may have an S/F ele in your team without it being a complete hinderance.
I’m not saying ele is not the worst of all, in fact it is, but it’s not that behind other “low tier” classes currently: mesmer is the only one which can REALLY be useful.
Luvboard, lemme explain a few things on how thief vs ele match up works. The thief will always jump you when he has the upper hand. Could be with basi, or backstab steal combo, or just when you’re out of cooldowns. Rest of the time, he will keep his distance and you’ll be toast. Assuming you’re talking about some “competitive pvp staff build”, gotta take into account how a competitive thief would play. What he plays doesn’t even matter there. And staff is the most unreliable, whack damage you could imagine. You HAVE to run scepter/xx.
I have 14k hmmmm. 6sec prot on 10s earth swap. 3 1/2s prot on aura every 25s with static aura 4s static shield w/stun (tempest defense) + another 3 1/2 with frost armor 40s blast. + 12s prot forge runes. + armor of earth 7s prot.
Even if I didnt have protection.
When does backstab do 14k dmg? If I dont react for kitten sitting their sure he gets more then a backstab off. But I guess only your ele friends do that and thats why they dont think it works. They must be bad.

And your telling me the rest of the time the thief keeps his distance vs an ele? no Cause his team would be dead. Hes almost forced into training ele.

backstab steal does about 10k damage if backstab crits. You’re left with 4k, in range for a single lethal heartseeker. Also, The backstab steal combo will daze you and even remove stability if you have one on. At this point, the thief hasn’t used a single initiative. At this point he can do whatever he wants. Run away stealth and open you with basi, daze and Ice shard stab you, auto attack you, heartseeker you, shadowshot you, doesn’t matter. You’re dead.

Ele is trash outside of wvw zerging with a staff. Even in pve ele is trash and other classes do better damage while having much higher survivability….they used to have neat mobility but that’s gone so no reason to ele anymore.

Yah, they will die, unless they have
- high access to invisibility, clones, and teleport like mesmers
- high access to aegis or invulnerability to block the burst
- a high armor class. I don’t think I ever care about thief burst when I play my ham/bow berserker warrior. Even with Berserker, I have high enough armor and HP pool that I can brush off the thief and remove the pressure. 3 seconds off ~1500 HP recovered.
Also, the people above you argued that the staff ele with berserker amulet the OP talked about would die so easily to the enemy. Your D/D bunker Ele can live longer, although still not as effective as other class. Also, avoid arguing on different skill level. If it must take an extremely good staff ele to be effective, while it takes an average Joe to play effectively another class, then it’s the definition of imbalance.

with 100% prot uptime, your 14K HP merely turns into 18.5K effective HP, less than a full zerker warrior, whoopedy-do.
Ele still sucks overall IMO due to overnerfs and fundamental design issues (enforced versatility).
Ele’s need to stay where they are. Once I see one on the enemy team I know it’s a free win (which = better rewards for me and rewards is what pvp is all about).

ya 18.5k hp + healing glyph and regen + healing rain + geyser + blasts + water elite. prot gives you time to get off heals and kill the target at mid.
+static aura + frozen ground + frozen armor 10% dmg reduc not sure if it stacks with prot. But it all helps vs thief and you can last until your team wins at mid and the thief is like :/

It doesn’t give the ele the defense it needs. It just gives dagger off-hand a bonus to mobility. That won’t be enough for the profession, I’m afraid.

I’m pretty sure that anyone on an assassin build can jump on you and kill you. Mesmers, thieves, fresh air eles, you know. And I doubt the teamfight power this brings can be compared to one a necro will bring, since a necro is way more tanky.

Umm…staff has more “run away” options than any other Ele weapon.
Fire – Burning Retreat – 20 sec CD, evade, fairly long retreat distance.
Air – Gust – 400 knockback, 1200 range
Air – Windborne Speed – cripple/immob/chill cleanse, 10s swiftness
Air – Static Field – 2s stun, big AoE field
Earth – Magnetic Aura – projectile reflection
Earth – Unsteady Ground – won’t let enemies go across it
Earth – Shockwave – immobilize
Combining staff skills with cantrips = slippery target. The main weakness is that staff gets absolutely shredded when trying to fight on point since all it’s damage revolves around AoE fields (that a blind man could avoid), and when Magnetic Aura is on cooldown it’s GG against any ranged attacker. Also we’re forced to run Ether Renewal or get melted by condi classes.
So the only use left for staff is stand behind teammates, hope like hell you don’t get noticed, rain down Meteors + Lava Font and maybe provide some healing (2 water fields).
Overall staff as a weapon is fine, but the core issues with Elementalists still remain – way too squishy, bad mobility, awkward attunement cooldowns, heavy reliance on cantrips for survivability, inflexible traits, etc.
The class in general is just not designed to compete with the likes of Guardians, Engineers, Warriors, Mesmers, etc when it comes to high-level play.
I heard Thieves got nerfed but at least they still have a ROLE for roaming and far-point harassing, at least they can hold their own in 1v1’s and team fights.
Ele’s have no role whatsoever, and the biggest kick in the balls is that they are still so hard to play properly.

Just wanted to add that Tempest Defense won’t help against Basilisk Venom since Runes of Lyssa will give Stab most of the time.
Moreover, you may be able to survive a few seconds but you can’t run forever and you can’t hope to stay on a high ground making it rain either.
Moreover² this is not just about thieves imo, this is not the only class that can turn your game into a nightmare.

Ele is good. Throw some water fields, static field and meteor shower in ring and you kick kitten. Soon somebody come tel that they can’t win 1 vs 1 fight, but pros don’t fight 1 vs 1.

why would the ele be running from the thief though? dunno about you guys, but when I’m playing ele and have a thief on me I try to burst them. arcane shield, lava font, arcane wave, lightning flash, electric discharge, fireball is some pretty serious burst
lava font might be on cooldown, but the other stuff shouldn’t be
