Engineers... how do i make them go pop?!
Your class/build?
At the moment i play my mesmer in a build i made myself (as mentioned i got no clue whatsoever on how to make them useful :S )
Domination: I
Chaos: V
Inspiration: V VII
Illusions: V X XIII
Using Scepter/Sword and Greatsword.
Runes of Undead and RAbid Amulet
would appreciate any help anyone would have
Condi necro can pretty much 100-0 an engineer, or roll a diamond skin ele and watch both the condi necro and engineer RUN AWAY from you.
Honestly you can probably just sit back with greatsword and wear them down if they stay on point. Don’t try and trade blows with a bomb engi on point as mesmer. You can go in for blurred frenzy hits, but get off the point after it.
If they’re throwing grenades, the best thing you can do is play evasively while doing dps. Grenades aren’t easy to hit moving targets with from range, if you do a lot of movement you can juke a lot of the nade hits.

Mesmer… right when the engi poops out healing turret, interrupt! Knock him back with that greatsword. Make him mess up his heal rotation then burst.

You’re a Mesmer. You need to out kite an engineer to beat one, use your greatsword and keep dodging. If the engineer is spamming grenades on a point s/he probably sucks anyway. The heal will be on a 15/20s cooldown so keep that in mind and watch out for other heals they perform. Constantly strafe and the grenades wont hit you, and don’t be scared to stand in them, they had a 30% nerf recently. Burst will scare an engineer as we don’t have many oh s**t buttons, although some take elixir s.
You said you are a condition mesmer which against a engineer is going to be really tough, we can sustain and heal pretty well now. It used to be that condi necros would 100-0 us but even that isn’t true any more (sometimes). But if they spam grenades in a circle they sound pretty noobish as the grenade auto sucks.

Is that some sort of shatter condition build op? idk if you’re going to have the damage necessary.
aoe condition spam is hard to deal with when illusions vanish instantly. Greatsword isnt strong damage on its own, especially in a condition build.
The most luck ive had with engineers is when i go power and manage to land a phantasm burst. ie: GS2, phantasm, 3 followed by pistol phant/ interrupt/blurred frenzy. Hopefully every phant gets at least 1 hit in this way, you can then try to wear the eng down with GS from a distance until the burst is reasdy again.
The amount of aoe pressure an eng can dish out is insane, but they also tend to be squishy.
As far as condition mesmers go, pu is probably your best bet some variety of 4/4/6/x/x scepter torch with staff.
But w/e the build you use, chances are your going to have to kite an engineer, its impossible to stay on a point with 1 these days

You should try a meta engineer build and see for yourself what their weaknesses are.
I think that your biggest problem is lack of knowledge. It sounds like youre trying to pressure an engineer that popped his supply crate elite. Which is strong but its has relatively long CD (3 minutes) and doesnt last forever.
Without that elite you stand a very good change 1v1 vs an engineer. I even dare to say that you have the upper hand in a regular 1v1.
Hey Isha,
The problem is only partially Engineers; your build isn’t really doing you any favors. Right now your build is some sort of strange playstyle-chimera that doesn’t synergize with itself in any kind of way. I’ll break it down and would be more than willing to help you restructure into a style that fits you.
Domination I – Mental Torment (Increased Mind Wrack damage): This shatter trait is meant for shatter-heavy power builds. This means traiting 6 illusions for iPersona (XI) and 4 Dueling for Deceptive Evasion (X) in order to have rapid clone production and frequent/damaging shatters. Builds that take this trait usually go: 4/4/0/0/6
Chaos V – Debilitating Dissipation (RNG Weakness/Vuln/3xBleed when clones are killed.) Clone deaths and Shatters are not the same. Clones “die” when destroyed by the enemy or replaced with a new clone and release the AoE effect in a 240r around themself. Again, this trait heavily relies on Deceptive Evasion (Dueling X) to be effective and is generally suited for Condition or Lockdown builds that tend to trait 4/4/6/0/0.
Inspiration V – Persisting Images (Clones have 20% HP) This is meant for Phantasm builds, but even then there tends to be better options. Phantasm playstyles are entirely different from shatters, leaning towards keeping Phantasms alive to do the majority of your damage rather than shattering and this trait conflicts with your choice of Mental Torment in Domination. Phantasm Builds tend to spec something like 2/2/0/5/4 to grab all the Phantasm traits, especially Phantasmal Haste and Phantasmal Fury.
Your 3 Illusion traits are all geared towards condition damage, but focus on shattering (XIII), Phantasms (X), and confusion (V).
You’ve gotta decide on which playstyle you want to play, and then build from there. Check out my sliiightly out-of-date guide in my sig for further details on each style and building your own Mesmer, but this specific page may help Theorycrafting: Building Your Mesmer

Condi necros are probably the easiest way to deal with an engi 1v1. Although, mesmers are by no means unable to fight engis. Certain builds do very well. Confusion is more affective against engis than any other class.
That build .. so wompwomp.. I’m surprised you can make anything pop with it..
