It’s obvious at this point so there’s no need elaborating on the diminishing interest/population in Guild Wars 2 PvP.
Can this be reversed, or are any initiatives a band-aid on a bullet hole at this point?
ah………seriously?
Don’t worry fanboys with pink glasses will continue to say. It is not dying at all.
Everything is fine. not that i care much now

The whole game is dying unfortunately. WvW has been the bellwether. In a desperate attempt to save it they rolled back the desert borderlands, and did this server-linking mess because otherwise most of the servers can’t fill a map anymore.
They have been putting out more and more powercreep, and it’s undermining the foundation of the game. That’s being reflected in PvP as well. LFG in both PvP and WvW now only look for “primary” classes… because playing a medium armor class has become a liability.
Enjoying Capricorn, fast queue pops, queuing outside mists, and faster pace killing in casual play. Compared to last patch, the casual game is 200% more fun even without a ranked season.
If you wanna be negative, yeah, MMOs are dying from the minute they’ve launched but the timing on this post is weird

I’ve played games that were slowly and blatantly “dying”. It’s overly dramatic to say GW2 is.

MMO companies that listen to the “plea” of a small minority are destined to die quickly, you may not be aware but currently GW2 has the same PvP population of GW1..after 8 years from its launch, after 3 years from its launch GW1 had 10x the number of active pvpers
-GvG Matches had like 2 million viewers?
-All classes have always been relevant and with multiple builds?
When you actually gonna see these numbers in GW2?…hmm I think NEVER
The small vocal minority will ofc be happy of seeing professions they don’t play out of the competition..no more a serious threat, but hey..yours is a pyrrhic victory.
For how long do you think NCSOFT will be happy to pay for your 3k viewers tournaments?

Eles are dying but not pvp. I like the new map.
This just in: Less people play PvP in between seasons.

I’m glad some one on here still speaks the truth….I think most of the rest of them already quit the game.

This is so disconnected from the reality of the past that its laugh out loud funny.
2 million viewers for GvG? Really? So its larger than The International and LoL World Championships, which get play on ESPN and yet no one could tell you what GvG or Guild Wars 1 OR 2 sPvP looks like outside our fandoms. I would also love to see where you are getting these 10x player counts 3 years after GW1 launched.
Three years after that game launched it was limping along like it had always been. Balance was a rotating wheel with each new patch (just like in GW2), population would ebb with releases then go dormant again (just like in GW2).
TL;DR: Guild Wars 1 was an extremely niche game, Guild Wars 2 is an extremely niche game. Nothing has changed.
I attribute it to poor balancing of classes. I mean one minute you can pvp on your class and the next you are trash.
Another reason is they’ve REALLY taken the skill out of this game with all the power creep and passives.
The plan is easy. 1. Don’t the pendulum theory to balance your game 2. Bring back skillful play.

The plethora of defensive passives saving people’s kitten because they can’t counter incoming burst.
Look at druids now…Warriors….condi mesmers…..scrappers…..etc
They need to get back to the core of the game

Talking mostly about the competitive scene. I’ve spent an awful lot of time on twitch lately and the there seems to be a serious lack viewers and quality content creators compared to even a few months ago. Not to mention the scene in general is the same ~30 people it’s been for months.
I love seeing Capricorn in it’s new form, and I’ve been having more fun than ever in PvP. It’s a thieves playground given the size of the map and thief mobility. I’ve even been able to have fun after the nerf to thieves attack from stealth. The buff to Venom share makes up for it in some aspects.
The new Living Story has even taken me out of the mists to enjoy… scratch that, Greatly enjoy the new map and story line. I haven’t enjoyed PvE this much since launch. It’s quite refreshing.

Why then some i can burst down some Wars\Mesmers\Scrappers any other class with all those “save kiten” ? Mb its just matter of skill and nothing more?)
The massive power creep from HoT killed GW2 PvP. Not fun to play and sure as hell not fun to watch.
As a avid gamer and one who has worked on games in the past (mostly marketing and sales) I can tell you this time of year and especially this month is a particularly slower month. Families are going back on vacation and getting ready for back to school. College kids are moving and getting ready to move to dorms and so on!
So is the population down or are people playing less right now because of real life stuff? Hard to say but this is a wrong time of year for those type of bold statements. Come September and October if numbers are down then you can start shouting!
Quit a year ago to come back a month or so ago and to only find it in worse state than I left. The Meta wasn’t great back then (think HamBow) but at least it was more twitch based, compared to the brain-dead condi-spam and passive that seems to rule the roost now. Throw in the power-creep from HoT and you have a dull and unbalanced game-mode.
Sure, I can go condi bunker Mesmer as well and face-roll my keyboard, but it’s just a skill-less game play that does not interest me. Just quit my guild and will quit the game soon. I’m sure some people still find PvP fun, it’s just not for me and I now remember why I quite a year ago and didn’t miss it GW2 PvP.
Like all games slow a little this time of year GW2 is no exception. I think it will be just fine. Not like there are a bunch of much better games coming out. In fact there is really no game out right now that has the dedication behind it right now other then maybe WoW and maybe one of this years new titles. That all being said I don’t think GW2 is dying just a little slower right now for what ever reason. As much as I hate it I don’t think killing the ele is making everyone rage quit. And yes Anet killed the Ele and that class is dying!

If GW2 is dying it is sure taking it’s sweet time to die. People have been saying this game is dying for well over a year now and yet I still see plenty of people in HotM, even with qeueing outside of it now.

Usually there’s been a weekly cup but currently the twitch competitive scene is hibernating until the world qualifiers on 6th-7th, and then there’s nothing planned that I know of until the Worlds at mid September.
It’s definitely just a lack of streamable events currently, which is a completely different thing from the game losing steam.
Lots and lots of pro scrims happening every night, it’s all happening off of twitch though

Source on the amount of people playing pvp in gw1 after 8 years and gw2 after 3?
Make me aware.
To be honest it’s not the right patch to really complain.
The off season experience is REALLY BETTER, you can queue outside HOTM (finally), you have the ranked queue and you have the unranked queue with more maps and a new totally map + achievements and title.
They removed bunkers from the games, ofc there is some balance issue like always, but balancing is a continous process so it’s fine.
For me, like i said with my feedback in S3 Season, Anet should work on improving matchmaking, rewards and put the Arena 2vs2 like new game mode for the next xpac.
About Arena 2vs2 I really think without any bunkers, could be more fun than ever.

I think he means the youtube mirror, the factions tournament had 2 million + viewercount before it was taken down (the reuploads don’t have much).
What do you mean “nothing’s changed”? Arenanet lost almost all of the GW1 PvP playerbase with GW2 and to this day they couldn’t recover from it.
(edited by witcher.3197)
Ya its pretty sad. A few bad choices and they lost million of players and million of potential USD

Considering the large number of pro players who openly admit they only play GW2 for the money, it’s not surprising.
Gw2 isn’t dying, it’s losing players by the day but some return, see if anything has changed after a year – most likely not – then leave
Balance is getting somewhere. But there are still issues with the core game, which is pretty much impossible to fix unless there is an overhaul.
Here is a short list of a few of the issues:
-Matchmaking is questionable
-League system is grind based instead of being skill based
-Rewards are abysmal compared to pve, and are not skill based
-No objective quantification of skill. Personal skill is measured by subjective bias, esports status, and how you convince others you are good. Players have difficulty getting into the esports scene because of this.
-Lackluster tutorial into pve
-Skills are too multi-faceted. They do too many things when they should just be kept to a single effect.
-Too much AoE
-Too many forgiving builds and passive traits
-Lack of diversity in builds because of elite specializations.
-Lack of diverse game modes
-Few maps
-Spectator mode still buggy
-No replays
-Personal score does not indicate your performance. Leads to toxicity
-Poor statisistics. Does not indicate your contributions to your team very much.
-No solo/team que split
-Few tournaments
-No leaderboards
-Pvp music is repetitive
-Visual effects are disorienting in large teamfights
-Powercreep
-Low pvp population
-No surrender/resign function like in gw1
-No build templates

Huh, weird, I could have sworn I read this exact same title over a year ago (and two years before that)…
I wonder why PvP still isn’t dead yet, despite people shouting doom’n’gloom for the past 3 years.
Maybe it’s not dying? Maybe people are just dramatic?
As some others have posted, Capricorn is a cool map. It could use some small tweaks… like the secondary exits and a little more space between points. Otherwise liking it so far.

Quoted for truth.
I’ve played games that were slowly and blatantly “dying”. It’s overly dramatic to say GW2 is.
If you think GW2 is a success compared to those games..I think you played games that had like 100k players in total, for what supposed to be a mainstream triple A MMO,..it’s surely a great victory …-_-
Our definition of “success” is completely different and that’s ok. I think 100k players is huge but I came from a very small player base back in the early 90’s – late 2000s, so my experiences differs. You can look at any top 5 games that slowly died. They all have very poor management from Devs, mixed with a tremendous amount of bugs, and/or unbalances that eventually lead to poor player experience. Other games are slowly dying due to it being outdated. Such the case with GW1, hence GW2.
GW2 is not in the dying boat but it’s eventually going to get outdated, naturally. The rate of decay will vary depending on the type of games that emerge on the market. Right now, only very few MMO games are releasing and they’re not going to be the next best thing. That said, Star Citizen is a game that everyone and their mothers will jump ship to (pun intended) in the next year or so. That MMO is going to redefine the genre and not many games will top it. It’s not a hack-n-slash so players will still crave that medieval world such as GW2.
Again, it’s overly dramatic to say GW2 is dying. It’s really not; many players still play, it’s fun, and there’s still a lot of new players i’m seeing for the first time in pvp.
It’s not dead yet, but you can bet it’s on its way there! HoT powercreep dealt a cruel blow to this game mode. Elite specs are still out of control.
Well…there’s still time to fix things, I guess.
(edited by JTGuevara.9018)
The HoT devs didn’t understand the difference between powerful looking skills aesthetically and powerful skills numerically.
New map, Rage of the Capricorn, along with the new Salty Sea Dog title, along with the changes to the classes has made this game a lot more enjoyable; even in unranked pvp.

Start with a S and end with a D. (Not E)
The HoT devs didn’t understand the difference between powerful looking skills aesthetically and powerful skills numerically.
You said it. I’ve kept up with PvP for 4 years. Right now, the pace of the game is ratched up way too high. It’s ridiculous. There’s just too much damage, condis, sustains and spam out there all over the place thanks to these elite specs.
PvP used to be more strategic, more skillful, had a more controlled pace. Skills and traits had a cost. You had to choose between power, condi, bunker, hybrid and support. Now, elite specs give you all that in one build. Everybody now can be a condi-burst bruiser machine that holds points. That takes the skill out of it.
I’ve spent about 4-6 hours a day over this past weekend (and today) playing both ranked and unranked. Over the course of that time I’ve seen the same 20-30 players in both ur/r, over the 3 day period.
The majority of friend’s I played with who were in diamond/legendary quit at the end of season 2. Almost none of them played season 3, of which I played 25 games and didn’t lose a single one; I proceeded to stop logging in because there were no players and competition was awful. Myself and the majority of my friends have no interest in season 4.
WPAK, one of the largest JQ guild’s has pretty much dissolved over the past year, many members of which have been gone since a month or two after HoT. To those I have spoken to, none of them have a hopeful outlook.
After the first two weeks of S3, the lobby was practically empty at any point of the day, and only had a decent population; I mostly attribute this to the lack of shinies dangling in front of the casual players as PvP rewards. By the end of the season the PvP lobby was dead, I didn’t even get a single pm from gold spammers.
Balance is awful. Build diversity is awful. Ridiculous changes patch to patch completely removing builds and or classes from the meta. Condition builds still being brain dead and far too rewarding; this is on top of double dipping for offensive or defensive stats vs. power based specs. A lot of condi clear was actually nerfed, and ele one of the best sources of team cleansing has been repeatedly nerfed. Not much hope on the horizon, lots of new bugs for Revenant’s. But don’t worry, pet names will now be saved and pigs/moas are BEASTS.
If you think the PvP population isn’t dimishing at a very rapid pace compared to previous years, you are seriously confused. While the game may not be dying as quickly as people make it out to be, there really is no reason to PvP in this game anymore.
(edited by AegisFLCL.7623)
The massive power creep from HoT killed GW2 PvP. Not fun to play and sure as hell not fun to watch.
This.
When ANET decided to remove power builds and make all substain condi neverending fights.

I’m not disagreeing, or agreeing for that matter, but i always find it funny when people try and quote these kinds of numbers. So i thought i might finally ask, where the hell are you getting this information? It seems like the population is fine to me so did you just hear somebody say that and go with it because it confirms your pre-existing beliefs or do you actually have a credible source on overall gw2 population and stuff?
I don’t care either way, i’m not trying to start an argument i’m just curious.
SPVP is dieing?
Nah…
Its already dead, been raised by a necromancers a few times, but still falls to pieces like a bad designed unstable zombie.
So I guess all the scum of the earth Pvp players are off to pve then?
Since no one can state a game with pvp as good as this game with the variety this game does now give us .
Same ole thing,
That will be all donkey!
