Q:
Champion Slayer | sPvP Rank 90
Dragonbrand
(edited by Ferik.3127)
Q:
I just hit Rank 20 in PvP this afternoon, and…I just wanna say…
“ENOUGH!!!!”
The rank points required for every level of 20~30 is 7500
The rank points required for every level of 30~40 is 15000
and much, much more for rank 40+….
This is a PvP game mode. People should be rewarded for their skills displayed, not just time invested. Right now, it is obvious that the game reward ONLY the players who can commit time.
A player with poorer skills but can play all day long will ALWAYS look cooler than the player that has pro skills but can play for like 1~2 hours a day.
I think this is wrong.
Guild Wars 2 is a game that’s all about gameplay, not grinding. And here, regardless of PvP skills, we all need to grind to eternity in order to get better looking gears in PvP….
“BUT WHY!?”
“JUST STOP!”
Personally, Rank 30 is really the limit i can take.
Anything beyond Rank 40 should be given to players through some other ways.
These are all well-designed cosmetics, trust me, people will grind for them if they have to. But why? Why is Anet forcing PvP players to grind? Isn’t this against the very spirit of Guild Wars 2?
You could put these Bear and Shark gears on tournament matches so people actually can get them by winning tourneys (thus proving they have better skills and deserve to look cooler)
And grinding itself, I can say, takes very little skill. It only takes time.
But I can be mistaken. Grinding for cosmetics is a very bad design in my opinion, but you may disagree.
What do you think about this? Is grinding for cosmetic an acceptable design in PvP?
(edited by Ferik.3127)
not acceptable, and it is stupid
your post is correct, and is one of the reasons i stopped playing
The exponential increase in glory requirements every 10 levels is completely ridiculous, and is no better than those Korean Grindfests that ANet tries to distance itself from.
For what it’s worth, PvP progression is getting an overhaul eventually, but the damage has already been done. So many of my friends either won’t touch PvP at all, or have quit GW2 entirely because of the many baffling decisions that went into this game…

Too late click is already mindlessly farming for 70
Too late click is already mindlessly farming for 70
He won’t farm for 80 though.
Nearly 9 million rank points necessary…nobody will go for it.

why don’t they just remove those 50+ ranks? No sane people would continue playing just for that…
^ That’s a good idea. if they just redistributed armor for 50 ranks, and leave 1-50 the same I’d be cool with that.
You forgot to mention the fact that you are able to farm rank much quicker mindlessly zerging around in hotjoins than you can actually doing tournaments?!?! where is the logic there now there is tons of rank 40+ noobs running around who have no clue what teamwork is or how to actually play the tournaments as they are meant to be played which in effect makes rank completely useless in every way.
This is very true changes must be made. As much as I love guild wars 2 its just crazy the time you have to invest to reach such high tier of ranks.
Bear, Shark, Phoenix, and Dragon skins dropping from tourney chests drool. Also on a side note tPvP gear does look cooler than rank gear up until 50. I used to dream about getting heavy Inquest armor on my Charr because he looked like a transformer in the preview :P
No the system should be kept as is. The leaderboards already show who has the best win percentages and ranks on the leaderboard are based on player rating so it’s fine.
Emotes however should remain earned through time spent on the game. It was the same in Guild Wars 1 where the players that played the most got the better emotes.
Vanity.
Looking good doesn’t matter when you’re winning.

INCENTIVE
(edited by Ferik.3127)
Hot joins should reward more than Tpvp. Tpvp is a sheltered garden where great buddy’s and swell guys all get to use VOIP and play very specialised niche roles and a few secondary duties and stand in one place for 90% of the game and call in back up as it is needed. It also has the luxury of only having 5 vs 5..a nice number to have.
Spvp you have no VOIP, you get no assistance from your team mates 90% of the time. Your whole team can be pluggingholes in a downed player and clamouring over each other to get the stomp whilst one of you lays on the ground hoping someone, anyone will help rally them. In the same maps that accomodate 5 vs 5 nicely, you know have 8 vs 8 with a dog pile whirl of particle animations everywhere. The teams are often stacked on the final score card of one time having players rank20-40…the other team rank2-11 with one rank 23..players learn which is mostly likely the winning side. What makes it even more enjoyable is if you watch players from the same guild who lucked out getting on the same side. They run past each, wave pleasantly and don’t engage..if someone else comes along, the appropriate player attacks while their guild mate watches and gives pointers and warm high five at the end. You’ll ransackers constantly target people in starter gear (All the more reason to deliberately make all the skins easily obtainable from the get go.) and farm their hiney all game long.
Why do people do this? because there is no reward for them to do otherwise, so they make grinding rank easier for themselves with no regard to team.

Here is the answer. There is no need to reduce the amount for R80 or anything like that.
In the actual state of the game, nobody is even forced to grind for that rank. It’s no indicator of anything.
What I don’t understand is why in pve you can have the skins you want by “choosing” your dungeon, so you can have flame legion set, nightmare ( for tokens ), or cultural armors (for gold ), but in spvp, you have to grind to rank 50 for flame legion, maybe 70 for nightmare set, and rank 80 for cultural armors ?! Rank 80 for armors that have been created at the beginning of the game ?!
It’s great, because it means that if someone grinds for YEARS to get to the LAST rank, he’ll just have armors that you can buy for some gold in pve or wvw from the BEGINNING of the game …
THIS is the laziest thing I’ve ever see in any MMO. Don’t even dare make beautiful pvp armors to congrate us for our rank 40, 45, 50, 55 ( +… ), and yeah, just give us armors we already know for a year every TEN ranks.
PS : you want new armors ?! go gem shop and sell your house to get this new steampunk skirt / hobo coat / tumorinyourshoulder stuff!!

Have you ever seen someone in GW1 PvP that cared about being rewarded for hitting certain ranks? There were r14 players with Standard Gear. Why ppl should care about cosmetics when they actually have a real incentive in the game?

But he will be the only one with this armor in pvp. The thing is that everyone will start to cry in the pve forum if anet brings some unique pvp equip.
Wooooow Ferik u hit r 20 it took u probably about 2-3 days to get there its absolutely understandable that u want access to all pvp armors after so much hard work.
(edited by Zoutsha.1093)
Some of you are clearly missing the point here… “We have leader boards” and “Because that shows who’s best Ranks should stay the same”… That’s EXACTLY the issue… think about it, the better players get shafted while mindless drones in sPVP get the actual rewards… THATS THE kitten ISSUE. Think about it.

Considering all the rewards/incentives/game play advantages PvE/WvW has over PvP, I DO think some SPvP only skins would help the situation. Do I think “load it up and taht’s a rap”? No; something more needs to be done, but making a few designer skins PvP exclusive would brighten a lot of people’s days. Mine included.
This is all good and nice. but the paid gear showed us that this is not a permanent solution. after one week you and evetybody has the skins and then what? First anpermanent solution has to be found.

If you ask me … something like that screams that Arenanet has one hell of an ego and level of pride going on here. “Yeah, our game is SO awesome that people will grind for that long to get all the cosmetics. XD”
^ Most likely the sad truth, as they are too prideful to do anything other than their precious little conquest mode that so many have come to be bored to tears of. If the game mode was universally fun for many … the game’s PvP would have much better success than it does now.
Take a look at a vastly superior game in terms of being well rounded for the players who enjoy it. League of Legends. Not a whole lot of maps, but wait … they did 5v5 AND 3v3! They even made an ARAM map! The playerbase loves it! They intelligently listened and designed aspects of the game around what players enjoy and look what happens.
Success.
Unlike this game. And oh yes … it’s not an MMORPG with huge amounts of PvE content / design to balance around that does nothing but interfere / make balancing their side project harder. Because the PvP ISN’T simply just a side project on League, but it IS here. Compare and contrast … pretty easy with this game, really.
did you all ever thought of playing because you enjoy pvp, instead of playing to grind those glory numbers? you’ll enjoy the game much more once you stop watching that purple bar.

Kinda hard to ignore it when you want something (and generally deserve it too) but you’re out shined by lifeless spvp zerg zombies.
why do people play the following games?
- team fortress 2
- dota 2
- league of legends
The funny thing is for TA exp armor you need… 4-5 days of full path runs and you got your full armor.
For the spvp version, it is exponentially higher. And in pve since the leg and hands are not too noticeable and can be replaced by cultural t1-2 armor, and some people are not interested in the helmet, you can get your TA look in 3 days flat.

I don’t know much about the two MOBAs but I do know you can earn money ingame to unlock more characters, and they’re constantly putting out new ones (new content) so that should seem pretty obvious…
Team fortress 2, they also have reachable armor/content, its not hard to get, in my opinion, and they also have very editable custom rooms, that’s one of the big things that keep people on other games like Minecraft too, so I would venture to say your comparison is apples and oranges.
Seriously, if you want to play dress ups, I’ll buy you a barbie. If PvP isn’t enough incentive for you to PvP, do something else.

You don’t have to be a kitten because people enjoy getting stuff when they play the game, grow up. I like to pvp, I also like to mess around with armor, and look cool while I do it. A better game is a game with more options, so shove your egotistical attitude up your kitten .
I’ll need your mailing address.

I solved the problem by wearing orrian armor on my characters as soon as I was able to craft it with paid tokens XD
I agree, the grind for cosmetics in sPvP is really really out of place.
I know everyone says that Guild Wars 1 had a huge grind and it took a long time to get top ranks. But guess what, this is not Guild Wars 1 and it never will be. Why try to keep the rank system from GW1 when Anet cannot even keep the same gametypes that GW1 had?
With Leaderboards currently FUBAR’d there is absolutely no point in going for top 100 (you also get nothing for being in the top 100, no titles, no armor). There really is no point in playing tourneys to progress in spvp because there IS no skill progression.

Yeah, me too, and that was fun for a little while, but I tend to enjoy mix-matching armor to see what other looks I can come up with and 1-49 gear all looks pretty meh, especially as light armor, lol. Mixing Nightmare, Flame Legion and Koda armor can look pretty sweet though. Too bad I won’t be seeing 70-80r any time soon even though I can get in the top 500. :P

Don’t know about LoL but Dota 2 and Team Fortress 2 both have massive inflows of community created content every single day, whether it be weapons, skins, maps, so there is ALWAYS something to work towards and look forward to.
They’re two of the few instances of horizontal progression done right.
GW2’s pace of content expansion in the cosmetics department is laughable in comparison.
Love is over? :/ why don’t you ever respond to my tells draaz….. I don’t know if barbie sets can be shipped to australia, maybe I’ll get you a Barbie; Outback Mercenary, Action figure instead?..
Do eeet, I want! I never get your tells
Lol thought you sold your account or got hacked or something….
I was sending like chinese text to you just incase…

Cause someone actually made r50 going tpvp not spamming nades in hotjoin all day (Those are even higher than 50 btw and well known around..)…so…no.
(edited by Archaon.6245)
I don’t really see much of a problem to this ranks, the game isn’t even a year old and we still have plenty of time to get to the last rank (even as casuals). It gives even more prestige to show the Dragon emote if you know that it’s something that can’t be achieved in just a few months.
Just take your time…. you’ll get there eventually.
Edit: Interesting (not sure who it is or how close), it seems someone is really close to get to the last rank.

its ok to have a rank whick is time-depending, but tbh not if its the only rank in pvp. pvp players have a indicator for time invested, but no indicator for their awesomeness (skill)
just add another rank based on tournament wins. one win = plus one rankpoint – simple as that and already ingame. this would be at least more meaningfull than actual rank.
sad but true, there would be so many ways to do better than actual ranking
To whoever brought up Guild Wars 1 and said it was a time investment thing and needed to stay… no. Even guild wars 1 began rewarding more Fame in HA as you won matches: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Hero_%28title%29#Fame_per_win
Point is, the current rank system needs to be revamped, and/or the reward system needs a revamp. I don’t see why winning a tpvp match can’t award thousands of rank points. There also definitely needs to be a larger incentive for pvping, so it isn’t so separated from the rest of the game. Maybe allow players to level up, or spend glory (and maybe some sort of tournie token) to turn pvp skins into pve skins.
There really ever shouldn’t be a moment where a player should have to weigh playing pvp versus making progress on a character (whether its leveling, or gold, or legendary crafting, etc).

true, but, team fortress 2 did not have so many “custom skins” during release.
but back then, people still play team fortress 2, right?
and … it is casual hot join friendly team pvp game … yes?
give gw2 spvp some time, i’m sure it will work out right … somehow!
though at the moment, we need to keep reminding them to make appropriate changes!
No honor for hotjoin (Just glory and it would be more than enough) seems fair enough to me to discourage farmers…you can even delete all honor from previous hotjoin matches i don’t care

Agree. A-Net should have done a split from the beginning between hotjoin only for glory and tournament for less glory and rank-points to actually create a value in the rank-system
