Help me decide!
I can tell you one thing, engis have OPTIONS, they can play any role and still be semi-viable, from support to burst to duelists.
Engis are great in WvW and PvE and better for PvP due to their naturally high sustained damage and tons of damage mitigation AND CC.

Thanks for the quick reply! Anyone else have experience with the two?
My engi is not 80 yet but from what I have found online the PVE rotation is INSAnnnee…and even when pulled off perfectly does less dmge than other professions?…with all the changes in this patch are they looking better in PVE do you think?

My advice… wait until tomorrow to decide! :-D
Ps. Also think about how much time you are going to dedicate to learning. I don’t know about the Engineer, but the Thief takes a LOT of time to improve skill-wise.

It will be not be clear day 1 what is good and what isn’t.

The role of engi and thief is very very different. With thief you will be glass, you can’t really make mistakes that often as a thief to be successful. You focus on taking out other people’s DPS classes in teamfights, especially mesmers, necros, and rangers, above all else.
Engineer is most often played either as a celestial or rabid build. The rabid builds have immense condition pressure, but are in turn very weak to enemy conditions and many teams run lots of AoE cleanse in teamfights which limits rabid engi to an extent. Celestial engi has a lot more sustain than rabid engi, and comparable, yet fundamentally different damage since its mixed rather than soley condition based. The main draw for celestial over rabid for me is that the rifle is an amazing weapon for single target CC, which is really important in this game. The pistols/sheild have great condition output, but the rifle’s low cooldown immob and knockback and the burst from jump shot just make it a fantastic weapon. There are also zerker static discharge builds, but I don’t see any reason to use them over a thief/mesmer/medi guard.
Also about engi in general, is that the weapon kit system is very fun, because it allows for fluid transitions between weaponsets without your momentum being stifled by swap cooldowns. D/D eles are forced to use rotations by the nature of their attunement cooldowns, while Engineers have considerably more freedom in that regard, as well as lower cooldowns in general.
Taking a break from GW2 to play various

Perhaps not, but it will be much clearer than the day before the release :-P
