Has PvP always attracted a lot of abrasive hostile mean people?

So I had done a little bit of PvP in the past. But then with this new update I was enticed by the reward tracks so I decided I would like to really get into PvP. So I started playing in the custom arenas with my thief. I designed my own build and experimented with traits and skills till I found something that seemed effective and I enjoyed playing.

Once I got comfortable with PvP play and felt like I was winning more skirmishes than I was loosing I decided to try the solo arenas. I really liked it and had been having a lot of fun. I was about 75 percent through the Balthazar reward track and had been doing pretty good in solo arenas. When I looked at my PvP tab to see my stats I had played 21 solo arena matches and had won 14 of them. So I was feeling pretty good, like I was starting to know what I was doing and was contributing to my teams wins.

So this is where I was upon entering a solo arena match last night. I started the match by running to their home capture point. I ended up in a skirmish with a thief, we battled for quite a while, shadowstepping around and fighting. He eventually killed me and then this guy on our team starts with the insulting. He generally insults everyone our team with some comment like “well that was a great start.” (The other team was up on us about 60 points to 20 points.) Then he hones in on me and just can’t shut up about what an awful thief I am. He is berating my build, insulting me, telling me to please just go back to PvE, and on and on. All I say in reply is that I have been winning lots of matches all day. He responds, “lol, no you havn’t…” And during all this he uses the “sit” emote to demonstrate that he is no longer participating and keeps telling everyone on our team to just let them kill our guild lord to get it over with. Some other guy on our team joins in insulting me and the other teammates and he also refuses to play and sits in the spawn the rest of the match.

Then about two matches later, we end up in a very similar situation where someone on our team gets mad that we aren’t winning (I think the score was approximately 330 to 250 or something) so he proceeds to just stand in the spawn and not help anymore and insult our team the rest of the match.

Then a couple matches later, some other guy just starts insulting everyone (on both teams) about their meta builds, and how everyone using thief, mesmer, or ele is a noob, blah blah blah.

I end up deciding it must be a Saturday night thing. Maybe people have been drinking and they get belligerent.

But then I hop on today cuz I was at 99% on my Balthazar reward track and wanted to finish it up. The first match I’m in, we start a off a little behind (one of those 65 to 20 point scenarios). But then we start to make a comeback. We were within 20 points of the other team in the low 300 score range (something like 310 to 330). Right about then, we had a guardian finish capping the other teams home point and then with no enemies in sight, he proceeds to break the other teams gate and goes in to harass their guild lord. In the process he ties up 3 of their players who go to try and stop him from killing the guild lord. I thought it seemed like a useful distraction. Right then a warrior on our team starts going off about, “guardian, what are you doing?!” And commenting about, “I’m so sick of PvE scrubs.” Then he uses the “sit” emote and sits down and refuses to play; when we were only 20 points behind!!! I can understand giving up when we are 200 points behind. But only 20 points! And we had been making a comeback… He refused to play the rest of the round, just sits and insults his team. We ended up loosing by about about 90 points. We easily could have won if he had continued to play. During his pouting and insulting he makes some comment about how “he plays to win.” We were only 20 points behind when he decided to refuse to contribute anymore!

So my question is this: what the heck is going on? Is PvP full of hostile raging people like this? I just don’t get it. Any advice on how to handle these people/scenarios?

It seems like there is this group of players that want evidence that their team is going to blatantly overpower the opposing team based on the what the score is after the first 60 seconds of the match, if their team is behind at all they refuse to play and start with the insults.

Also, doesn’t solo team arena automatically match you up with teammates that have a similar ranking to you? If these hostile PvP guys who hate “PvE scrubs” are such hardcore PvPers, then why are they being matched up in teams with people like me that have only been PvPing for about a week?

No. They match you with people with similar MMR if they are avilable at that very moment. If not it will take whoever is available.

So its possible to get in to matches with rank 80s, tournament level players, current top 5’s … and guys who dont know that you can weapon swap all in the same game.

It’s nowhere near as bad as in other games.

People are actually quite nice.

The thing is if you try to PvP you will lose. Just cap, it’s all about capping.

What this guy said. the current system is flawed in how it introduces new folks to MMR. 14 wins out of 21 is top 50 NA leader board status according to the current system. The strategy the guard used in essentially rushing lord solo is not typically played in “higher tiered” pvp matches, especially down just 20 sum points (unknown how many capture points your team holds). Usually you hold 2 and rotate teamfights. I don’t blame the guy for raging as the current matchmaking is broken. Also rushing lord is typically played in “higher tiered” matches as a last resort option from losing the match. When all else fails..For example like a 350 to 450, that even if you hold 2 points and win the teamfights you will most likely still lose given how close the opposing team is to victory. Food for Thought.

Honestly I understand people that are hostile.

It’s hard to convince people that PvP is just an illusion, and you must avoid fights at all costs while capping.

You tell people: “Don’t fight, it’s not PvP. Camp points and come to each others aid.” But no, they have to roam around looking for kills.

What I find amusing is that you can speak with the offending team through /say, /map or what ever else, while in WvW you can’t even see the offending servers character names let alone talk to them. I would consider PvP a lot more competitive and with higher potential for abusive commentary than WvW. Especially when you consider you’re going to be fighting the same small group of people for an extended period of time, where as in WvW, someone kills you and you may not see them again for a week.

As for the people spewing insults at you and your team, just ignore them… It’s a game. Some people need to learn that. I’m guilty of cussing out my opponents on more than a few occasions because I have a short temper (which goes back to my saying it makes no sense you’re able to speak to the other team), but for those who have been ordering around the team or insulting certain individuals, I either block or humor them.
You can’t reason with ignorance. Fight fire with fire if you so choose to object to someone who is insulting you and be as ignorant as they. Sometimes all they need is a look in the mirror to calm themselves down.

All pvp has hostile raging people. Best way to deal with them is to ignore them. They can’t be reasoned with no matter how good you are, or how well you explain it to them.

I tend to just laugh at new players. Since explaining them rotations and tactics is close to useless…and so is raging. Just be quiet and endure the annoyance. There is nothing you can do about it anyway.

They tend to be incredibly arrogant and know everything allready even if they played only ten games in total.

In fact most new players dont know how to play. But they think they know tho even if its their first day. Conquest is far to complex for the average GW2 player. so you whont get a feel for it in a day or a week.

Hell i see tournament level players make quite some mistakes in their rotations even with 5000-15000 games under their belt. Difference is that they realize it and admit during our chat that they shouldve helped close faster or w/e.

New players dont mind sticking in 4vs3 midfights the entire game while im forced to solo 2 who are pushing our home all game. You know how frustrating that is? Especially if its followed up by the typical comment “stop whining, look at your points”. And thats where the rage comes from. From new players who force veterans in to annoying situations.

I dont mind if ppl are bad or if they make mistakes. What i do mind is the arrogance and the egosentric mindset/playstyle.

Honestly I’d put this game’s PvP community in a pretty high regard, but only when compared to other communities. But still, it’s not that bad. I don’t get bothered by people kittening around on this game though, the leaderboard is hardly anything most people pay attention to… and the scoreboard resets every time you join a new game. If someone tells me I suck, it’s pretty easy to think that something sucks so bad in their life that they have to be aggressive, because with MMOs it’s generally a true belief.

Don’t let it bother you; I suck and I REALLY don’t give a kitten.

Making a wall of text post like yours isn’t going to make friends in this section of the forum. All I’ll say is that when people talk trash to teammates they should always include constructive criticism so the person knows what mistake they made (“you made a bad play” instead of “you’re a bad person”). I know I can improve in this regard, especially in the heat of the moment.

If you’re going to make a serious lord rush you should announce it in team chat before going. See how many teammates are alive and if they’re tied up on fights. If an enemy player just died (especially > 1) you shouldn’t push lord because they can reinforce lord from spawn. If you want to make a solo suicide attempt at lord which I don’t recommend make sure your build has access to reliable poison and at least one CC to counter the natural regen and self heal on lord.

From the way you described the match the enemy team sent 3 players to deal with you, so while you got 3v1 your team was fighting a 4v2 on the points. What you rightly figured out is that your mistake turned into an even costlier mistake for the enemy team. If one of your teammates didn’t have a defeatist attitude you guys might have been able to get a 2 cap and hold it for the rest of the match. Sometimes people suck. :/

@OP:

  • I have a question for you. Have you ever played any online game in competitive scene? After reading your post i dont think so. In every multiplayer game (meaning gw, wow, cod,…) when you start to loose, people tend to get irritated. It happens. I try to not do it, but sometimes it just comes out. You can get on a 5 games losing streak, that might not be your fault at all, and you get angry.
  • Secondly, MMR (match making rating) in this game is not as good as it should be. When you start playing in soloq you actually start with highest mmr, meaning you will be paired with better players than you.
  • Thirdly, thief is in no way a home point defender. I know it might seem crazy to you, but not all classes are meant to do the same thing. Thief is best at harassing people. As a thief, you go from point to point very fast, shifting team fights in your team’s favor. When standing on a point, you are sitting duck for every far point assaulter.
  • At this point i just want to say, that long time pvpers are getting really annoyed with this patch. They removed our wardrobe, that gave us free armor (if we had it ofcourse). They combined pvp and pve items, meaning a lot of pve players with their legendaries are coming into pvp and a lot of them are acting like they own everything, while we have nothing to show, because we were not getting any coin before the patch. These reward track are also no as good as they should be. And for some reason pve people dont see that and they still want to come into pvp and make our day worse.
  • Lastly, when people in chat (teamq, soloq) ask you to do semething, do it. Chances are they are more capable than you, so do it. I did 1 soloq yesterday, and it drove me mad. I was with 1 engi that sort of knew what he was doing, and other 2 engis and 1 necro that were completely clueless. I told necro to wait on mid point because our guys on home needed help, but before i got onto our point, he already left mid point and went on far, where he died (ofcourse). Meanwhile we lost mid and didnt even get far. I asked him why he did this, he answered that mid was ok and he wanted to try far. After the match i explained to him (not raging or anything, just so he knew for next time) what he did was wrong, and he started arguing with me. Who made you the boss of our team, i bet you could not stand 1v1, blah blah blah. To conclude, pvp people are not the only players that are ragin, so you, pve people that come into pvp and dont know what to do in rated matches.

I agree with OP. There are many hostile players in PvP. There is also a block button. Don’t hesitate to use it. It helps you enjoy the match.

The problem was that PvP offered next to no rewards previously, so mainly attracted the competitive types, whose only desire is to flex their internet muscles. With the addition of reward tracks, lots of regular players (myself included) are joining the PvP scene, making those competitive people feel threatened. When you take someone who cares about their K/D or Win ratio more than having fun, you get the xbox live behavior.

As for myself, I play for fun. Even so, I will join a rated match any day over the curb-stomp a new player finds in a hotjoin. Despite the brokenness of matchmaking, very few games are runaway wins, most being very close in points. Why even bother with hotjoin when you don’t care about rating? Solo Q gives more rewards and is more likely to put you with similar skill level than a random hotjoin.

As for the “advice” some people want to give, It all depends on your tone. Rage/Yell/Belittle/be rude.. expect a block and/or me doing the opposite of what you want, simply to annoy you at that point. There is more to the game than just “win win win.” Be friendly and explain your reasoning in a kind, polite, manner… I’m much more likely to play along or learn new tactics.

TL;DR Most of the older PvP vets want to flex their internet muscles; and care nothing about teaching new players, only about the win.

What is fun about trying hard all game while your team is unwittingly unraveling your hard work?

Do you think it would be acceptable for people to force themselves into a high level fractal group where people didn’t have the option to remove them, ignore chat, deliberately not follow tactics – all because they care more about fun than their dungeon completion ratio?

Welcome to Solo Que where people are stupid and nothing you do is actually your fault!!

Hell, in team que we had a PuG who didn’t rez my friend when they were 2v1ing a bunker (pug showed up late), friend asked why he didn’t rez and then the PuG decided “Nows my time to shine!” and proceeded to cost us the game by standing in our base, spewing out paragraph after paragraph of random bull kitten complaints essentially throwing us into a 4v5…

I wouldn’t worry about it OP, I mean if you’re doing REALLY bad you likely wouldn’t be winning very many matches unless you’re being hard core carried.

Just try to win, practice, edit your build if needed, try again, and have fun, i mean it is only a game after all.

People also don’t tend to pug a high level fractal in general. Going into soloQ with a high MMR is taking the same gamble as pug-ing the high level fractal with no coordination.

Sounds like you have an issue with the matchmaking system more than anything else. I’m guessing you have a high MMR, which you would equate to a high level fractal. Due to the lack of higher level MMR players, you get paired up with lower MMR people, and due to the team balancing, can cause the lopsided issues you are seeing.

How long are you willing to wait to fill your team out? Also, what variation in MMR is acceptable to you? While Anet slowly, very slowly, works on fixing the matchmaking, those at the edges of the system are going to see the most negatives (from their point of view). You either get quick games with more variation in skill, or long waits with low variation in skill. Do you really want the system to essentially never give you a game if there are no people within your skill level available?

Too many people obsess over their rating as if their next job or the cure for cancer is tied to it. We have different goals in the game, but that is okay. With the influx of new players, as well as potentially more coming, the matchmaking system will begin to find you matches of similar skill, and you can play with you fellow people in the top tiers, valuing each match with your life. I will be content along the bottom, doing stupid things, with the rest of the stupid people. Like having /dance parties with the opposing team on a cap point instead of fighting.

Nobody – nobody obsesses over their rating using glicko. What people want is fair & engaging games that aren’t as frustrating as they are now.

What people don’t [or rather choose] not to take into account is that there is a place for people who want dance parties, it’s called hotjoin. You can be content dancing at the low ranks in hotjoin, you can zerg points/leave mid undefended as much as you want, nobody will care. Of course people don’t do that, they flood into solo que. Why? Because having your cake and eating it is totally possible.

You can skive as much as you want in tpvp without punishment, ignore tactics, do whatever you want nobody can kick you, nobody can do a thing. And then at the end, still pick up the track rewards and higher exp.

Right now it’s more punishing to be the person actually trying your best to win, and that is absolutely toxic. So don’t act shocked if anyone is hostile to you while you are doing that in tpvp, it’s most certainly you.

Find a team and make decisions with it, so that when you make a mistake, you can all learn without trying to put the blame on anyone, for you have made it together.

The team is small enough it’s actually easy to find a common strategy and agree to find the good balance in builds between aid to the team, personal effectiveness and fun.

It’s normal to grow tired when you’ll tend to hate your allies more than your enemies, because they might be arrogant people who spout insults without helping (even if someone else tried to be constructive and discuss strategy), and there are those that are new but think they know how the game is played, who lead your team to defeat overextending and then insult the others who remained behind because they made less points.

Then there are the ones who are new, not arrogant but don’t know what they are able or unable to do, but they are much less annoying.

I wouldn’t say that the behavior described by the OP has anything to do with the game mode but rather the attitude of said players. There are some that tend to rage about, well, anything and those who are capable of giving constructive feedback. You can find either of those in every game mode, be it PvE map boss encounters and dungeon groups, in WvW, etc. The thing is, that in most cases there is a good reason for them to say something, it’s just the choice of words that varies.

I for my part played some PvP after release but got bored after some time due to the lack of game modes (I think I just played until I was close to wolf rank and then quit PvP – I would still consider myself new due to lack of tournament experience). Since then I played PvE and lots of WvW and came back to PvP now. I have fun playing PvP due to the additional modes added since release and the new reward track, so I’m definitely here to stay. I don’t think the fact that I haven’t played PvP that much and not at all for a while makes me a “lesser” player. I’m very good at ignoring those who think so btw.

Still I have to say that I haven’t been called names, insulted or anything by now in soloq (at least not by allies) and was able to play there without attracting any negative attention (or all the people I played with were of the very patient kind). I try to communicate before every match what I’m intending to do and where I intend to join in afterwards etc. If I notice someone giving advice in the team chat, I follow it. Those people trying to advise in team chat are the ones who haven’t given up on the “new” players yet, so maybe you should also do them the favor to listen/read. It makes the matches more enjoyable for them, and for you as well due to the higher chance to actually win and learn something in the process.

Regarding the other ones raging and calling you names, I can only recommend to either filter useful information from their raging or if there is none -> ignore them.

Some people just have a fixed idea of how others should play, and in SoloQ expects them to, even though not convening this information to anyone. Others might have a bad day, be the type to not see things through and give up prematurely, or could be morons that just want everything, but doesn’t know how to get it and get angry in a child-like manner, ruining it for others, instead of trying to mend things with diplomacy.

As others have said, you can ignore them, block them, or tell them “do you want some cheese with all your whine?”. If they refuse to coorperate with you by communicating properly and coherently, there is little hope they will change and work towards a common goal, sadly. Many people will complain about losing, it’s something that won’t change I’m afraid.

As someone who started “serious” PvP’ing not too long ago, I can tell you that it is a completely different gamemode than what you’re used to in PVE/WvW. Conquest is more about map awareness, decision making, making predictions and creating numerical advantages, rather than pure player vs. player situations. There are certain unwritten rules for PvP that you have to obey unless you want to be a burden for your team.

Learning basic rotations and making the right decision is something you won’t learn within a day or a week, it takes time and experience, so unless you’re experienced you better listen to what experienced players tell you to do. This is something I’m puzzled about. New players with no kittening knowledge about the gamemode or any sense of map awareness frequently refuse to do things told by experienced players, even if they’re the only reasonable action to do. Accepting critique and reflecting on your own gameplay is the only way to improve your own gameplay. You don’t need to listen to each and every player that flames you, but at least think about what mistake you might have made that led to him flaming you directly.

As you’re playing thief, you have to realize that you’ll usually be the first target to put the blame on, simply due to the role in your team. You’re the roamer, you need to decap uncontested points and create numerical advantages for your team due to your mobility. Its not your task to engage in 1on1 situations, but to play for points and force your enemies to fight outnumbered. So unless you can’t finish someone off within 15-20s don’t engage into 1on1 situations.

I’d argue that the roamer is the most difficult role to learn, as you should always have an eye on the minimap and the success of your team is often highly influenced by your own performance. A good thief probably has the most influence on a game, while a bad thief will make your team feel like they’re fighting a 4vs5.

First time on the forums for me. Just on here to see if I could find some helpful advice for PvP, as the players in game only seems to be capable of spewing out insults. Was going to start a thread similar to OP’s, but I’d just be repeating most of the things he’s alrady said.

Just started doing solo arena a few days ago, as I hadn’t tried it before and want to see what the game has to offer. It went pretty well, and it’s usually a lot of fun, so far I’ve won more matches than I’ve lost.

What really annoys me though is when people start spewing out insults in the team chat. And fine, I’m new, I get that – but insulting me is not going to make it better. Here’s someone who genuinely wants to be good in PvP – not necessarily a professional, but I do want to be an asset to my team. I don’t get why people have to be so hostile. I’ve played 20-something matches in solo arena so far, and this has happened maybe 3-4 times(?), so it’s not like it happens all the time. Still really annoying.

So my question is this: what the heck is going on? Is PvP full of hostile raging people like this? I just don’t get it. Any advice on how to handle these people/scenarios?

I opened the same kind of thread a few nights ago. Got a really good answer. Check this one

Blizt.3086:
I want to welcome people to play PvP, but currently I just can’t with the amount of frustration I get.

I tried, I tried interacting with my teammate at the start, during the match, with friendly attitude too. But most of the time there just were no respond from them at all, or likely they didn’t even have a clue of what I’m saying (for instance, telling them to rotate)

While not completely accurate, you can somewhat tell if the player is experienced in PvP by looking at their title, and the amount of people I see with non-PvP title just worries me, wondering how many of them really know anything about playing in solo/team queue.

I’m sure there are definitely PvP players with really bad attitude toward PvE players, but if you think about it, PvP players were always the minority group in GW2, I can only imagine there will be MORE PvE players with bad attitude or playing deaf when in a match.

I’m not kidding, I’m starting to hate PvE player even though I really shouldn’t, but I hate Anet even more. All this kitten happened because they put that stupid daily cap limit on Reward Track, which forces PvE players with no choice to play solo/team if they want to keep progressing.

I’m not saying PvE players shouldn’t play solo/team queue at all (after all, if you don’t play, how will you improve), but they should be separated into group that truly wish to improve their PvP skill, and group that simply wants the reward. And it’s the later PvE group that should be barred from solo/team, they should just earn their reward by playing in hotjoin (just as how back then PvP daily should be done in hotjoin, not solo/team queue).

But oh no, Anet decided to put the stupid daily cap limit on reward track in hotjoin, so the system screwed over us, and we end up in a situation it’s a lose/lose for everybody.

Some won’t care for sure. But I think most genuinely not get complex concept when they’re fighting on home, they see “Stop doing X” in the chat while getting smashed in the face :P

Problem is not pvp community being toxic…problem is that there are too many pve heroes pretending to go pvp knowing kitten about it just to farm achievements.

The problem is that some PvE players are coming in thinking this is Wv3 where they can group up, zerg as a group and ignore holding any points, they also do not want to listen to anything said to them in team chat no matter how helpful it might be.

It’s all good and well people trying to say to teach them or say it in a nicer way or some garbage, the fact is, you could say things with a cherry on top and people will still ignore it to do whatever the heck they want. You can’t teach the blissfully ignorant nor those unwilling to learn when they want to farm and then get out.

As for the hostility (in the OP), is this your first multiplayer game? There’s trash talk in all competitive games, it’s neither hard nor difficult to ignore it.

Problem is that pve heroes coming from zergs vs doors actually think they have experience into a competitive environment…wvsw has nothing competitive, it’s just a skilles nab zerging buffs/gear related pve where you can actually kill other players too…commanders, “million wvsw kills” entitled rambos and stuff can’t do kitten in pvp since it’s skill based without huge zergs and crazy stats covering your back…in pvp if you screw up you lose, bad players in team are bad…but those self proclaimed pros coming from a pve mode disguised as pvp are even worse because they don’t even read chat and play for team, just running in circles getting chainganked around screaming for “come 1v1 meee!!1!!1” and so on while losing -300…at least real new players want to learn…(Still not giving a single kitten to be kind with new ones after 15th…noone from anet had been kind to old players so i feel free to be toxic as much as i kittening want, before 15 i used to explain things..helping ppl, giving out builds and stuff, now i just insult them…who cares..)

Pretty much, most of them seem to think it’s about how many kills they have at the end of the game rather than proper team play, holding points and rotation.

There’s a team element to Wv3 sure (smaller groups, not auto-attacking zerg snooze-fest that some people hilariously delusion themselves require any modicum of skill), but to come in thinking you can apply the same type of approach to sPvP is grossly ignorant. You can have 3 people on a point who will ALL chase 1 person who is dead off-point just to get the stomp, capping is a secondary notion to all 3.

Like you said, the real ones want to learn and I’m cool with those guys, the others, yeah, sorry, you’re not getting off with your bs.

Some of us are hostile because we want PvErs to go back PvE.
If you have the soul of a PvP player you shouldn’t be affected by this hostility just work on improving your skills. Search builds, read tutos, ask for advice to PvPers in game.
With custom arena’s it’s now a lot easier to teach people, provided they want to learn…

we should be constructive…lol. please.

you don’t think we try to be? just last night i encountered a group who literally -and i kid you not- zerg’d, as in ALL 4 OF THEM went to home at the start to defend against 2 players from the enemy team. then after home was capped they all zerg’d to mid and left home. pretty much this went on throughout the entire game. as i scrambled to cap back home or decap far, i called out and asked them to please stop zerging and split up to cap mid and home, or do anything but what they’re currently doing.

no one said anything.

i pleaded the same thing again 100 points later, still no response.

near the end when the inevitability of our loss became apparent, one of those zergy noobs started bashing our ranger who apparently went afk on home node. granted, i also hate people who afk…but our loss definitely isn’t from that ranger afking when the enemy was 20 points away from victory and we were down by over 150. it’s because they zerg’d the ENTIRE f’n game. i called out that we lost precisely because no one listened to my plead to stop zerging.

he responded with the notion that i typed too much during the game, which invariably meant that i was a useless female sex organ. he then proceeded to inform me that by looking at the scoreboard, i obviously wasn’t doing anything constructive, and that because he had such a high score tagging along 3 other people for those thrilling 4v2 kills, he was obviously more experienced at pvp than i am and i should shut the eff up.

this is what we get from trying to be constructive. over and over again. they don’t listen. almost none of them do. they’re like that annoying, unloved preteen you were paid very unwell to babysit for 2 hours while her parents are out dishwashing for peanuts. she thinks she’s “all growned up” and knows everything cuz her daddy let her take a drag from his cigarette that one time, and she won’t let you stop her from sneaking out to sleep with her junior high teacher.

A bit of a crude analogy perhaps, but accurate. I find much of the hate towards veteran PvP players is misplaced. We try and help, but people just don’t want to listen.
