First game of the day, full pugs vs a 3+2 team (I lost)
(Right clicking showed they were all solo on my team)
(Right clicking enemy showed they were a 3+2 team)
Lets just pretend they were waiting super long queue times = poor match making…

I queued immediately after the first game lost, matchmaking started Right Away
Second game showed me against the same people! The Same Two thieves and Warrior!
(This time i messaged them asking if they were in a group and they said no)

First picture is game lost.
Second picture is game won.

What ever’s going on with matchmaking… it’s still incredibly terrible! You can’t say “Long queue time = poor matchmaking” just got thrown out the window with results like this.

I have to say threads like this shock me to some degree. They shock me because I don’t understand how in 2015 people still don’t grasp the very simple concept of math, numbers, player base.

LoL has good matchmaking because they have millions of players to pull from. Smite’s matchmaking has gotten better this year as their player base has become quite large.

Now you expect great matchmaking with Gw2’s relatively small player base? Do you expect the devs to pull players out of their rear regions? Should they wave a magic wand and make 200,000 people log on to pvp 24/7? Ooh I know! How about Anet enslaves a quarter million poor foreign farmers to help fluff the odds of you getting a perfect game match?

Here’s a simple diagram if you still haven’t gotten teh point.

1,000,000 players = Great matchmaking!
1,000 players = poor matchmaking.

now try using the some logic and think about this for 20 minutes.

Because there aren’t enough people playing the game! Matchmaking will always be bad if there are no players queueing up! Anet needs to find a way to get more people to play! The first step is to introduce a new game mode! It’s been about 2 and a half years and there’s only one game mode! Conquest should be relegated to hotjoins and the esports aspect of the game should be arenas! You know the game mode where the focus of PvP is actually to PvP and not stand on points all game!

The game is confusing to watch! Anet is pumping out all these ridiculous prize money tournaments for the same team to win over and over again because there is absolutely zero competition in the competitive scene! There are zero upcoming teams who are able to even remotely challenge the top teams, of which there are like only two or three across multiple continents! And then when these tournaments happen, nobody knows what the heck is going on on Twitch.tv! Camera angles aren’t that great and there’s too many effects going on, especially when many people run lots of sustain builds so fights draw on for a long time! This is assuming people even hear about the tournaments! There is very little advertising going on at all!

And then balance patches come out twice per year! That is so bad! So bad! Anet takes so long to do anything! How long have the public been crying out for Skyhammer changes! Over a year! In CS:GO, players had a problem with a map called de_overpass! It was changed within TWO WEEKS! Anet please patch the darn game more often! It is very obvious Celestial Elementalists are too strong! When will they be nerfed! Oh well if you go by the 6 month patch period, we have to wait another 2-3 months! Woop dee freakin doo!

Oh sorry Vee Wee started ranting again! Because there’s nobody playing! That’s your answer! Nobody is playing!

You would be right but the matchmaking queue didn’t even try to make these type teams better! I’d understand if it was after the 2m time limit but it was literally Seconds once I hit that tpvp button.

Even if we were the only players available, it still should have waited for better matched players.

Here’s the issue
Even IF all of our MMRs were the same….

3+2 teams were together against 5 solo’rs
(Anet said teams had a better chance of playing each other)

Two type classes were on the same team twice
(Anet said they would fix that)

It should have been 3s + solo + solo…
It didn’t even try mix and matching the picked players together to optimize the even match. It didn’t even bother waiting 30 seconds or more for better players to show. After the first game the queue (second picture) started almost immediately…

Don’t give me that “Population so low” bullcorn. The matchmaking algorithm is no where near the smarts it needs to be.

So everyone else was waiting for who knows how long and you were the 10th player making it instant for you. Did you go around and ask every single player how long they were waiting…no you didn’t. I have got insta Q pops on my team and the enemy premade said they were waiting for over 10 minutes. I have waited for 10 minutes and they enemy team said they got insta pop. Just because YOU got an insta Q pop, does not mean the matchmaking system wasn’t running for a while on that match. Your MMR came along and they system decided it had waited long enough and took you. Use your brain. The world doesn’t revolve around you.

So everyone else was waiting for who knows how long and you were the 10th player making it instant for you. Did you go around and ask every single player how long they were waiting…no you didn’t. I have got insta Q pops on my team and the enemy premade said they were waiting for over 10 minutes. I have waited for 10 minutes and they enemy team said they got insta pop. Just because YOU got an insta Q pop, does not mean the matchmaking system wasn’t running for a while on that match. Your MMR came along and they system decided it had waited long enough and took you. Use your brain. The world doesn’t revolve around you.

I was talking about the second game’s instant que, not the first.
Are you saying that next game, being only 1 single team of 2s (on my team), matchmaking decided to insta que us (at least 3 players) because a couple of players waited pass two minutes?

Um ya, and so does mine. So 4 of you insta Q’ed. Maybe the other 6 were in Q for 10 minutes. You don’t know this one way or another. If the system just insta Q’ed everyone, then everyone would be kittened and it would be adjusted. Some people get insta Q’s because some are waiting forever. In the end as stated by Anet a million times, the system has to put people together. Small player base make insta Q pops for some because the system was searching for too long for the match. This means others were waiting.

I believe our frand and retired #1 Engi NA and world first rank 80, Vee Wee is correct. Match making has to make sacrifices to even get games running, and the more people there are the more accurate and closely it can match players.
But as the queue drags on it has to cast an increasingly wider net to just get the game going. Figuring that an unbalanced match is better than no match.

Just because some people get a quick queue doesn’t mean the match hasn’t been on hold for a while. And simply put, not enough people are playing. Add to this that the higher the rank the less people are in that rank and the system is going to pull some pretty skewed crap as well.
The alternative is much longer queue’s or even unable to play at all at sufficiently high enough ranks. That would just lead to even less people playing and making things even worst.

I understand that. In regards to that first match, even if all of us were waiting for 10 minutes, why have 3v2 vs 5 solos?
It could have easily been 3+1+1 vs 2+1+1+1
That’s better than 3+2 vs 1+1+1+1+1, wouldn’t you agree?

This is EXACTLY what happens. Devs have given stats upon request of players and said the games MMR’s were even. For instance, is Oeggs goes solo Q there isn’t going to be a bunch of soloers at his MMR. He will be stuck into a pug with a LOT lower players to make their match then even MMR. This could make a perfectly even premade MMR against 1 or 2 players with really high MMR and then 3 with really low MMR. The 3 players will get rocked non stop because they are not used to play against players that high. This would also give them a 0-19% win chance and if you care about LB’s and good chance to gain points still by scoring points or not loosing LB points at all in the event of a loss.

People posting about 500-0 games are being a bit wrong imo.

Even under the last system 500-0 and 500-50 games were regular. Even in games with close fights it was possible to lose or win near to 500-0 just because of the game mode and scoring system (and the rally mechanic).

More of an issue has been the difference in skill between players in the same games.

Ya, Dev stated that you went up against full teams (almost) twice. Your second picture it looks like you actually tried to win. Grats your pug beat a (almost) full premade (or are you the premade?). The looks of your first picture though………………… your team didn’t even try or have no idea what they are doing. Lets start with you, 2 far nutes/ caps and you just sat there for the entire round not helping your team, leaving them 4v5. Of course you will loose. You have a warrior in your base 1v1ing, IN YOUR BASE ?! kitten?! You have a thief who is coming to help you on an uncontested point leaving the rest a 4v2…………kitten?! Mid is an obvious loss and he could have pushed home or waited for the others to spawn (if dead already) and re-pushed out. Also unless they killed boss right at the start of the match you let 1 person go kill your boss? 1 Warrior? Your team may have been incompetent this match, but it doesn’t look like you helped much either. Use team chat and coordinate better, would be a start.

May have come off a bit harsh, but trying to be constructive. I beat premades all the time as a 2Q. Team chat works wonders. If you don’t try, you will lose. 75% of premades are just a group of friends Q’ing together. They aren’t good and they are not using voice coms. Easily beatable when you know what you are doing. Also your off peak time of play (as stated) won’t help anything. The player base playing is probably 1/3 of peak time and not much for matchmaking to choose from.

There were literally no other premades near our MMR Q’ing at the time, so lengthening our wait-time just prolongs the inevitable.

I’d almost encourage you to go the alternate direction because one night it was SO bad that we waited 15 minutes about 4-5 times in a row, just to get the same team over and over and over again. There match would pop when one of us went afk, then we literally waited 15 minutes just for their match to end to finally get a qpop.

If you take into account the time it takes to find a few people to play with, have people hop on ts and then start playing a game without anyone having to take a break, that means they literally have to commit at least 30 minutes to a single game. 5 different people.

So the problem won’t be solved with longer Q times for pre-mades, there just needs to be two different arenas or higher incentives for people to actually play pvp, because right now the rewards are pretty terrible compared to other aspects of the game.

For example, let’s take it to the extreme. If you gave 100g per win then pvp would probably have 10,000 active Q’ers during the lowest active hours of the game. Of course it would cause chaos for the economy but that’s irrelevant to the example. As it stands right now pvp’ers are getting pretty abysmal rewards that bots could earn farming Queensdale, and there’s no incentive to beat better teams or improve. It’s only rewarding players for Q’ing often. There needs to be better incentive to Q often and perform well instead of just spamming games.

Higher rewards for higher MMR’s, basically. Right now players are PUNISHED for having a high MMR. Who do you think Q’s against the top teams more often with just a rag-tag group of players? It’s not random pugs so much as it is active players with the next-closest MMR’s who realistically have no chance, despite the flawed MMR predictions. Just because my MMR is 1% away from theirs doesn’t mean I have a 50-50 chance of beating them… To be fair, MMR’s should have been reset with this test season, and should definitely be reset for the new season. All it stands to do is punish active pvp’ers and reward players who have low MMR’s since it is easier for them to get +1-2’s for losing.

So long story short, when classes start on Monday I won’t be able to Q if I get 15 minute Q’s for a 10 minute game after spending 10-30 minutes asking people to pvp and waiting another 10 minutes for someone to finish their game because the ranked games are flawed and don’t cancel when you click cancel and then hope after all that time not a single person of the 5 people is afk to miss the accept button and then have to wait in Q again, just to compensate for you guys taking out Solo Q since I just can’t hop on and do a casual Solo Q due to the nature of the match-making. I’d ask if you knew how many times I’ve duo and Solo Q’d into the abjured or radioactive, but I’m sure you could look it up x:

I agree with lux and his statements have been made for a long time. There are 0 pvp related rewards which means there is no incentive to improve or keep playing. There should be scaled rewards such as special skins for each tier of the playerbase. Highest tier should have something making them stand out while the lower you go in tiers the less luxurious the reward.These rewards should not be based off of leaderboards but rather your mmr.
Even if they made pvp as profitable as farming mobs in pve I believe that would go a long way to bringing in new players to pvp. But as of right now, there is pretty much no reason but an easy daily for most people.

This sort of thing seems to be happening fairly consistently during “peak” hours as well Justin (5-8pm EST). It’s especially bad right around reset when PvE players do the profession-specific daily and get matched up way above their skill level due to having new-class MMR. Please remove the profession-specific dailies ASAP.

You know, using the powers of innuendo, theoretically the devs could pull players out of their rear regions, and the waving of magic wands can be used to make 200,000 new people log in to pvp.

It’d be a very long term strategy though and Anet would probably need to hire a lot more staff to get the ball rolling fast enough. They’d also require a better female to male ratio, but those are just details.

I’ll say it again, like i have for so long.

split ranked into two queue’s,

1: 5v5
2: solo + duoQ.

This way people with friends can queue together as a DuoQ.
Teams can queue and play vs. other teams.
SoloQ’s can play relatively even matches majority of the time, as long as the system always takes roster size into account when making up teams ie’ 2x 2’s and 6x 1’s get matched together, there will always be a 2 on each team, rather than put both 2’s into ONE team.

My fault I should have been more specific. The second game/picture i’m with the premades

I’m not a bunk guardian so I don’t sit on a node… Every time I capture a point and no one is coming, I support mid. Assuming I down a player from defending (almost always do unless 1v2) I start counting to 15, support mid, then head back to home/far if need be.

The thief shouldn’t have been anywhere near that area… There was no reason to go far. I would have typed to go home.. but it no longer mattered..

Even if we had perfect rotations going on, best score we would have gotten would have been maybe 300. We had 2 thieves on our team playing like warriors… and a warrior who was probably off meta because he did terribly. The MMR may have showed both teams as balanced… but team composition made one side favoritable than the other.

Critique from the two pictures all you want but this is beyond a rotation issue.

A bit off topic but we would get literally thousands of new pvp players if you added and promoted two things:

reward tracks now have chance to drop Black lion key / precursor.

Jost remember the #precursorhype.

It’s already like that unless they screwed up the loot table. At least for some of the tracks since they are supposed to drop the same things that killings stuff in PvE is supposed to drop.

You have to make it a guarantee rather than a chance for the BL key and the rate would have to be faster or maybe equal to get a character to lv10(plus around 20 minutes) otherwise it is just more work for the same reward or less reward.

Had some weird fights today aswell where I wasn’t sure if that was intented to be this way. I fought against some rang 200+ people, while I wasn’t even remotely close to the top 1000. Also I fought against at least 2 premades where with full random groups.

5 matches today, 5 losses. First four games against the same two turret engineers in the other team. 5th match against 3 engineers who of course dominated completely. Biggest joke i have ever seen and done for today with this utter kitten.
