How to implement 2v2/3v3 Arenas easily
It is really THAT simple. How long did it take you to come up with this? 20? maybe 30 minutes?
The community would be overwhelmed with happiness on a change this simple. PvP would be revitalized.
Why after two years we can not have a simple new game mode like this? No new maps needed!
I think it is too late anyway. Whatever they come up with the community will trash them for it and be bored of it in a month.
That’s actually really good.
Nicely done OP! I hope Anet is listening. They had an extensive thread asking for player input for new sPvP game modes. So, I really hope this feature patch implements many of those ideas.
Solo queue would work better with a 2v2 compared to the currently conquest mode 5v5, you would just need one more person and that’s all, matchmaking would also be thousand times better and even 3v3 to some extent. Solo queue doesn’t simply cut it with our current conquest mode too many problems specially when there is a leader board attached to it.
Dear every ANet employee ever:
READ. THIS. THREAD.
That is all. I’d also like to see 1v1 arena. I feel like 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 and 5v5 could all be different game modes.
Please implement this… You’d make so much money.

Any reason to not use the TDM map? Modifying an existing dueling map sounds nice, but I bet it’s a lot more work than you think.

Maps
…
+ Courtyard
I wouldnt have a problem with Courtyard being the only map for this, I just think this method would be easier than creating new maps..
The concept is easy but there’s way more to the programming than you know.
I used to run the Academy Gaming tournaments for GW2.

You can take all the systems that are ingame already, just have to make adjustments to team size, and how teammates are selected. I know its not THAT easy but in 2 years it should be possible… and I still think its easier this way than creating new maps..
There are few problems.
1. As it stands for now, only Courtyard could be map for such game mode. The crowd’s favourite Beach on FoN has almost no LoS and is widely open. You need more LoS and structures.
2. Without few mechanics, matchups would be terribly unbalanced. The reason why 3v3s are closest to e-sports in Warcraft is because of whole healer-cd-CC combination. Guild Wars 2 is nothing like this and some professions are just superior in some areas of the game by design.
3. 3v3 with Necro on open map… God, that would be like chasing a turtle, tunnelvision 24/7.

Also, with the current custom map controls on courtyard, could you implement 3v3s as kind of a proof of concept? You could advertise the room here maybe so people can try it out.
I don’t think anyone even cares about the possible imbalances this could bring, it would simply provide an alternative meta.

Wrong.
Arenanet cares about the imbalance it will bring. Furthermore a of players will care about he imbalance it will bring and you know why? Because contrary to what players on the forum think, the 10 or 20 people that post here do not represent the 100 people that PvP.
History has shown that a lot of people do not know what they want and the imbalance will not be accept just because it comes with a new mode. The complains will switch from moar new modes to how ARenanet broke their game or how Arenanet did not balance 2v2/3v3 or whatever reason players can dream up to complain about something. The point being nobody not even yourself will be happy about a terrible 2v2/3v3 imbalance map and as usual the ones asking for it will conveniently forget that they were the ones spent the last 2 years whining and claiming not to care about the imbalance it a new game mode will create.
This is an mmo forum, if someone isn’t whining chances are the game is dead.

I actually played on a 3v3 custom arena at the release of courtyard:
- the match ends at 3 kills (150 points i believe)
- respawn timer is at the maximum
- at the end of each game cooldowns are refreshed
It can be done but we don’t have enough people willing to create this kind of arena and I understand that Anet should be the one supporting these game modes by adding sets of hotjoins for 2v2, 3v3 and deathmatchs.
Alright, let me kind of play devil’s advocate here:
You have the tools at your disposal to do this gamemode, but say not enough people want to do it.
I do agree that officially supporting the mode with a queue and ranking system would draw more players to it. That said, as a dev if I was asked to implement this mode officially, I’d want some assurance that players actually will play it. If the potential is already in game but there’s not much interest then it doesn’t sound like a good bet.
TBH I think the reason we even got the courtyard map was because so many players do dueling servers and because of the mistpedia 2s tournies. That shows there’s interest. Then, when they implement the TDM courtyard map… and it doesn’t get a lot of action.
Anyways, I’m not saying it’s a bad idea. I’m just saying the devs would probably take more attention if the unofficial version was getting a lot of player support. Maybe it really just needs some inertia to get the idea rolling; someone organizing unofficial tournies, or a couple good, dedicated TDM custom servers.
We do represent the community. We are the vocal, voting percentage.

Despite you undeniable reasoning for every claim you made. More variety means alternative play styles who may not find theirs in conquest.

You need to have a punishment system… you cant have 2vs3 matches

The principal reason it is lacking is that not all players have to knowledge of all the the custom arena proprieties and command but most off all the fact that to own one of these custom arena the player have to pay.
Dont listen these guys. 2v2 3v3 is bad idea, if you want play that go play world of warcraft.
This is a teammate mmorpg!
but calling it simple is ridiculous. It shows a clear misunderstanding of how much work it takes to program these kind of features.
Mybe the title is a bit misleading. I dont say its very easy to program, my idea was just to use existing maps instead of creating new ones, what indeed should be easier. And as I said, I think you could use existing queue systems, with some modifications of course.
@Dsquared
Of course it’s a team game, but I think this would provide a very good method to train the smaller fights. In the case my team is not full, I, personally, would prefer a 2v2 or 3v3 mode instead of playing soloQ or duo/tippleQ in TA. And if I want to try out some build variations I would prefer this instead of hotjoin/soloQ.

how is 2v2 or 3v3 not a team mode?
