I'm being punished
I used to be able to run a support build and do very well because both teams were competent and rotating.
Now a support build is utterly useless… I’ll just get stuck defending a point until it’s 1v3 and I’ll survive for a minute or so (thinking help will come because it used to when matchmaker wasn’t so noobish)… but nope i’m more likely to see that my team 4v2 somehow hasn’t managed to de/cap either of the other 2 points yet.
Hey, it’s another one of these threads!
All you have to know is that there are tons more “bad players” in PvP than there are “good players”. And it’s not just because they’re newbies; a lot of people actually like to sabotage their team from the inside to make them lose. It’s very common nowadays.
It shifted when ArenaNet introduced the Reward Track system, which introduced PvE rewards to replace the removed PvP rewards. Because of this change, a lot of PvEers figure that going AFK in an unranked/ranked PvP match is easier and more rewarding than going AFK in PvE, so that’s what they do.
The only way this could be fixed is by filtering players a lot more thoroughly during matchmaking. This would increase the time players spend in queues by a lot, which ultimately is against everyone’s best interest.
Your solution is to make some friends who like to PvP, and who are online when you are. Party up with them when you feel like doing some PvP, and have a good time!
PvP Forum Secret Rule:
Whenever I lose a match, it’s always my team’s fault. It is never my fault, because I’m always better than them. My team are all PVE noobs who clearly have no idea what they’re doing, and my opponents are always pre-made. The reason of my failure is always because of horrible match-making.
Back to topic.
Let’s rule out the pre-made thing first.
Everyone shares equal risk of getting noobs from the same match-maker we’ve all been put in. So if you get some crappy members, chances are your opponents also get some crappy members too.
So it all lies to yourself and some of the veterans in the other team. So if you have really bad result, it can also be your fault too, not just your crappy teammates.

Perhaps we should create a new queue for all the people who make this kind of complaint and they can’t get out of it until they’ve won 100 matches.
How do you know your MMR is high. Everybody is a star on this board apparently. What you are describing should happen to everyone there is no reason to believe the luck gods would single you out any more then anybody else. The idea is that over time things even out and you should be in no worse a boat then anybody else that solo’s a lot around your MMR.

P.S. – I’d share my match history if it was available to me…. but if you could see it, it would show I am more often than not expected to lose not because the enemy is high MMR but because my team is very low.

I did a partial-reset of ratings (meaning deviation only) the other day, and you’re ranked rating is still adjusting, so you have a wider than normal ratings range.
The partial-reset had an effect on everyone, so that’s why matchmaking has been a bit off. It should continue to settle over the next week.
I also turned profession ratings on at 0.25 percent, so if you switch professions a lot, those deviations will settle slower.
I’ll have a forum post with more details soon.

@Justin: I am glad you keep trying to improve matchmaking and everything. However, a quick forum post before you do it would be nice. Just tell us what disruption you are expecting. I do not even care if you tell us what you are up to at that time, just nice to know what to expect.

I don’t think everyone would completely acknowledge that, being people will still post and complain three days after Justin made a post about it.
He could make 4-5 changes in an hour without us realizing it. He shouldn’t excessively post about each and every change.

I was a conscious choice to not leave a post before the changes (there were multiple) to try and gauge community reaction without bias.
Quite a few people here tend to exaggerate, and it makes my job harder.

Hot fixes and new builds happen all the time in all aspects of the game. They can’t project every minor detail to the community. LB’s don’t matter and we are in between seasons where they are testing and trying new things. Pretty sure they won’t do any detrimental changes the day before the new season to screw everyones MMR over.
In time, it all irons back out. So there is no real need to get cra cra over it. Just be patient and it will be back to normal long before it matters.
Fair enough. Thanks for the reply.
I know what desertions are, but what exactly are buys and forfeits? I’m guessing that has to do with 4v5 or something of the sort.

A buy means the other team lost but had deserters.
A forfeit means your team lost and had deserters.

This is so depressing. I am by no means good enough to ever even think of carrying a team. But these situations, in which you sometimes even win a 1v2 or do really well against 3 people. And you think “Man, this needs to count for something, right?”. And yet, as soon as you glance at the mini map you see that the other two points are in the other team’s hands and your team is doing who knows what. This is just incredibly frustrating.
I’m not saying that every game is like that, but between this and the flamers – and it feels like they slithered right back out of the truck stop toilet they are usually hiding in – I’ve just not even remotely found myself enjoying PvP in quite a while. Its now more of a “friends are busy, might kill some time with something I enjoy … ed”-thing.
I do hope this changes. Because not enjoying a game is the worst thing you can say about a game.

This makes some sense that there was a partial reset and profession rating change.
However whatever combination of factors we have going right now, if i queue solo, I have odds stacked against me often.
What were the average odds of me winning those matches is the stat I am really curious about….

Also, the fact that I have more points than wins and still a losing record (when I’ve never been under 50% for a reallly long time) shows that I am more often getting used as an equalizer for unbalanced matches than I am getting actually placed against similarly skilled opponents. Doesn’kitten That’s my main gripe.
My MMR is pretty high for a solo player. It used to be that this meant I would get pretty tough enemies to play against. Now it means I get terrible allies ALL. THE. TIME.
I solo queue as well. This happens to me very often. The spvp community is just too small in this game, therefore the decision making by using statistics can never be accurate due to the small sample size. I just went 0 win-2 loss for the past hour, but i still up 1 point. You can see how bad was the match making. The only solution is to increase pool of pvp players, but that’s not an easy thing to do in this game.
The algorithm takes into account your leaderboard position and rank. So if you play a lot of pvp you will be higher up on the leaderboard. The rank and leaderboard position may offset your actual rating, thus giving you people to fight that are more skilled than you.
I have noticed my playing may have improved since sat (or better match ups)- I switched onto my their, guard and necro (been manning this one lately).
Something definitely changed – gone from 38% win ratio to over 43%.
I am also still climbing the leaderboard Sitting at rank 30 – and really enjoying some of the high level fights that have been going on lately.
Perhaps it’s me or it’s the matchmaking has improved ?
My win / loss feels closer to 50% when the team I am in is actually playing (and not having people who AFK for mins at a time – who I report for bottling OR go Afk).
I’m getting less of these 20s Que times and insta matchs and I know that I’m really appreciating the waits between matches for a much better overall experience.
feel free to check my account to see if it has made a difference.

Since you’re only 2 points away from your ladder score it could suggest that you mostly get even matches and do at least well enough to not loses point most of the time. I’m not confident any assumptions can me made from that data alone.
If I get time I can run another report for you.

I have roughly the same number of lb pts as wins too, but with 23 more losses than wins as of the last hourly lb update, what I infer from this is that I’m ‘expected’ to lose the vast majority of matches that I have lost, or the -points would have dragged my total pts far below my win total. I think the only thing you can reasonably infer from lb pts is whether or not your teams have been performing ‘as predicted’. I don’t think you can read anything regarding match balance into this.
justin, while you’re here, could you check if my MMR is fluctuating a lot the past few days? especially yesterday. i don’t know if i’m having terrible luck or what, but i’ve been put against people that i knew were way out of my league before the match even started (read: i’m not ESL finalist material, unlike the other team). hell, i’ve been thrown against the abjured about a month ago.
and usually, right after those matches (which are as one sided as you can imagine), i get put in matches with/against really bad people. like triple cap, zerg points, die to svanir levels of bad.

I don’t think that is necessarily the case. Since we allow you to get 0+ points for a loss, you could simply be doing well for most losses with any unbalanced game gains and losses evening out over time.
Unfortunately as long as a loss isn’t necessarily a loss of ladder points, you can’t really make any strong assumptions either way without looking at actual game history.
The best you can do is compare points to wins (victories + byes), but even that is pretty fuzzy. I’ll see about getting metrics for game results per prediction tier.

Please PM me. I don’t have time to do it right now so I probably won’t remember which thread the request is in and forget about it.

ok, i’ll send a PM, but if it’s taking valuable work time, then don’t worry about it :P i just don’t know if i’m just having bad luck and the matchmaking got really desperate about queueing the high MMR players against me and a bunch of other soloers, or if there really is something wrong with my MMR. i’ve been playing more regularly since the new dailies, so it should be far more stable than it used to be.
Okay i have no clue what the hell is going on but for the last 2 days I have had teammates that don’t even know the basics of pvp. This wouldn’t be bad if the enemy team was not full of dragon players that completely destroy everyone but me on my team and I am getting tired of it, something is wrong. I thought it would pass but it is getting worse, so maybe something needs to be changed again.

so it suggests i usually lose by less than 100 points? or does it suggest im usually favored to lose?
i was hoping you have the data that differentiated between hypotheses.
because I personally have witnessed a huge drop in quality of allies, which is seemingly corroborated by many posts on these forums in the last 2 weeks. there is something there, and it needs to be found in data’s terms.

All of the above are possible.

The data exists, I just need to wrangle it into a report.

Give it a least week before assuming this. We’ve got an influx of new players and they, as well as everyone else, are still settling.

Ok I will continue to chock it up to bad luck and new players for now. I am all for new players…. there is just really NO WAY in game to tell what the heck is going on… if the player is new or if your enemy team won ESL this week etc. WE WANT MOAR DATA! even just a raw data API the community would do wonders with it.

The thing that baffles me is that there is no entry requirement for RANKED arena. That means I can buy a game today, have never played any mmos or video games before, make a character get into ranked arena and ruin games for everyone I am teamed up with.
Suggestion: you can enter ranked arena only if you have certain mmr rating or have played a minimum number of games, or have at least 100wins(just and example).
I myself haven’t played ranked pvp in a while and got around to play it only recently while practicing in unranked and I definitely wouldn’t mind if I’m not allowed to join ranked before I get better. Played 3 games last night( I realise this is very low sample size), got team mates that 3 cap 1 point, die to an animal or loose fights 4v2 or can’t recap a point 3v1 while I’m downing 2 players on my own (had a 3v1 that I’ve won) and they still manage to loose 2 points to other team. And all this happening in ranked.
Unranked arena existing for a reason, so you can practise and get better, why not leave ranked arena for people who at least understand the basics of pvp? maybe make 2 leaderboards so that people who are clueless and still feel the need to see the progress can check their points in unranked leaderboards. Maybe make both arenas give leaderboard points and rename them so it doesn’t confuse people.
I know I’m just throwing random stuff out there and not giving any real solution. And I’m sorry if it sounds like a rant, but this has to stop. pvp is not fun at this point.
