Q:

I’ve played the same profession since beta, although I have messed around with other professions I never took them too seriously, was simply trying them out and seeing what they were and were not capable of.

ATM I’m not happy at all with how my Main profession performs in an sPvP environment and finally decided to let him go (for now at least) and play something else.

I will not say what my main is cuz I don’t want it to have an effect on your answers.

So, in your opinion, what’s the most efficient profession for sPvP atm?

Engineers are really strong in team fights IMO. Though in general I think every class has a good place in PvP – perhaps you aren’t using an adequate build?

Recommend Warrior, Ranger, Elementalist, and Engineer. These professions, when built properly, are inherently tanky enough to allow you to trade blows with anything, and prevent you from normally being hard countered.

I don’t think it is a build problem, the profession feels week and very little (viable) options.

I am rank 52 atm and consider myself to be fairly skilled.

Necro? It’s the only one I can think of people complaining about not being effective..

edit- I did some snooping to find out you play thief.. Thief is an effective class.. But I wouldn’t run p/d or d/p save those for wvw.

I see you posting a lot in thief forum, especially defending your thief p/d power build.. Now I am not surprised to see this topic.. It’s not the class.

I’m not trying to insult you either.. Maybe thief isn’t just for you.. I would now recommend Warrior since it is a drastic difference from playing a thief.

No offence taken, After the feature patch i tested multiple builds and weapon sets and decided to play d/p p/d condi (not power) since it was the most effective but not anymore since eles, guardians warriors rangers and necros deal very well with condis thus making a condi build pointless so I’m constantly changing specs and weapon sets to find that sweet spot.

It is painful (for me) to play a thief right now and most steamers seam to feel the same way. I guess it’s not just me.

And yeah… apparently the way to go is Warrior or Guardian, even though eles are extremely powerful right now I don’t like the play style to it.

Mobility: Warrios and eles do it ALOT better
Dmg: again Warrios, eles and Mesmers do it alot better
condis: every single profession does it better
Bunker: LoL

whats there left for thieves?! AW YAH!! the NINJA NURSE!!!

Yeah you’re talking down the Thief class for several things that it’s pretty kitten good at. You’ll probably struggle to do well with another class if you can’t play to the strengths of Thief, and think that these are things it does really badly:

Mobility: Thieves have incredible mobility, both in and out of combat. Multiple shadowsteps and gap closers as well as decent access to cripple can give Thieves positional advantages in most fights – sure, a Warrior can cross the map a bit faster, but they’re also running a terrible build for PvP if they do this. Thieves have high mobility as standard (since Shortbow and Shadowstep are pretty much standard…).

Damage: Thieves have reliably high burst damage, though like everyone else they have to give up something else (like survivability) to increase damage output. They don’t have incredible AoE damage, but there’s definitely some (hello cluster bomb) and their single-target attacks are very effective.

Conditions: While not many Thieves seem to be running condition damage builds right now, all have good access to poison from the Shortbow along with the control conditions (cripple, immobilise) from weapon skills. Add in the skills that Steal can supply, and Thief traits and utilities, and you can get pretty high conditions.
“every single profession does it better” – really? Guardians don’t get poison, confusion, torment, bleeding… or is there a secret condi Guard build that I’ve not heard about?

as for your question, Engineers and Warriors! both can:

  • Hold points
  • Great 1v1
  • Great at team fights
  • Got Cleave
  • Can ress
  • Can be built for team support and such.

@google thats what I’m looking for, a decent 1v1 that actually has team support. I tried the engi for a week or so but did not get the hang of it, warrior is a lot “simpler” to play but seeing some very good engis lately and I’m feeling tempted to give it another go.

Mobility: Thieves are by far the best roamers still and thats for 90% due to their insane mobility. Shortbow 5 >>> the mobility of all other classes.

Judging by your other answers, you dont seem to understand the unique role a thief fulfills. Youre not meant to stay in fights and do the most dmg or last the longest.

-Thief is the guy that keeps the homepoint defender of the opposing team glued to his homepoint (effectively making it 5v4 on the rest of the map).
- Thief is the guy that chases down and catches low HP ppl that try to kite away from midfights and recover.
- Thief is the guy that helps your homepoint defender within the blink of an eye due to its absurd mobility.
- Thief is the guy that is able to effectively slow down reinforcements from resses, while still being able to get away due to its mobility and/or stealth.

Like some other guys stated before; you should watch a guy like sizer stream. And dont watch it for the mechanical skills…watch it purely for the things he tries to do and rotations.

If for “efficient” you mean less risk with more rewards

1. All sort of warrior with stances, hs and cleansing ire (So yeah all of them)
2. Decrap/Turrent engi
3. Condispam necro
4. Sword mh thief

As for Sizer, I do follow his stream and most of the times I find him playing other professions like Warrior and Engi.

This. You should find a class/playstyle that you enjoy. Having fun is what’s most important for any video game. Don’t go around looking for what’s “most effective” as its effectiveness will vary with every balance patch, meta changes and such.
Edit: Also, if it helps, I’ve played thief since I’ve picked up this game and the alt profession I enjoy is Engineer.

The “holy trinity” of current top dogs in tpvp imo are:

- Bunker/meditition guard

- SD thief.

Other builds are the “roleplayers” for your team, while those 3 are the stars.

The problem is that if you’re not able to play to (or even be aware of) the strengths of the class you currently main, you’re unlikely to be able to do so with anything else either. The idea that Thieves can’t be mobile, especially, is a good indicator of your lack of experience with the profession.

I’d highly recommend trying out other classes (which ones depends on the playstyle you prefer), and finding out how they play – and once you’ve decided on something you really enjoy running, follow some streamers or find other tutorials with tips on creating builds and playing well with it.

(I.E they have high skill ceiling and cap)
warrior is the class that does everything well with little effort or skill required.

not to keep ragging on the thief thing, but i think the problem really was your setup. you said you were using “P/D D/P condi”. well, the problem with that is that D/P is not a condi set. it doesn’t bring anything good for a condi-spec thief. instead, having a shortbow allows you to have AoE, blasts, and poison fields (complementing the lack of poison on P/D and helping tear down bunker warriors and guards by tearing down their hps), not to mention the mobility required to move between points fast and harass the other team and bail out quickly once things get tough.

another thing to take in consideration as a P/D thief is that while you can have decent survivability, you still shouldn’t stick to the middle of a massive teamfight. get in with steal + CnD, attack, bail out with pistol 3. your strength is in taking down individuals with condis while keeping thief mobility.

for the sake of example, here’s what i run, and it’s serving me well in the new meta, after some adjustment. (note: roll for initiative over shadowstep is a matter of taste)

now if you wanna switch characters, be my guest, but don’t blame it on the profession.
