Good afternoon,

So I’ve noticed in not one or two games but multiple how hypocritical some of the community are during pvp, I have seen people verbally abuse another individual calling them heinous, homophobic, racist, sexist, remarks then proceed to threaten to report said player because of reasons in game, maybe not reviving someone on time, or other game mechanics. I find that to be unfair especially when it’s a pre-made team who gang up on one person.

How does one have the audacity to verbally abuse someone then threaten to report them.

Welcome to the internet. All MMO’s have these players. All areas of the game have them. They think the anonymity of the internet gives them the right to be jerks.

When you see them being jerks, report them and move on. ANet will give them what they deserve.

Because being passive aggressive is the thing these days.

People are too cowardly to actually face the consequences of their actions so they try to straddle the line so that the other side will strike first.

That being said, you should probaly report-block anyone like that because their words are worthless anyways.

If it makes you feel; any better, it’s really the equivalent of a little insecure dog barking loudly. You wouldn’t take that seriously would you?

It’s not an excuse. Nothing can be done to remove jerks from the internet. You remove some, and new jerks pop up.

There are jerks on non-gaming sites. You can’t be so naive to think that there aren’t jerks on other sites. They may be dealt with a lot quicker and a lot harsher than on gaming sites and the evidence quickly removed – at least in some cases. But I highly doubt that there aren’t jerks on other sites. And the percentage of jerks is likely higher on gaming sites than others. Because gaming sites are more popular with the younger, less mature crowd.

Where as more mature people refrain from using the anonymity of the internet to be a jerk, hence the issue is the maturity of the people in question, not the internet.

Well, communities are free to police themselves as to tone and behavior generally.

Report them for verbal abuse and move on. If they repeat the bad behavior enough they will face a temporary or permanent ban.

It’s the internet. You can be whoever you want and you’ll have white knights verses trolls verses the other.

This isn’t new to any online game.

It’s not the magic of the internet that makes people worse, it’s the lack of social consequences for bad behavior. In some ways it’s good for people to let out their frustration online, rather than in real life, but I think that Anet should enforce more permanent punishments for bad behavior. A while ago I proposed fining people in-game gold for infractions, and having a steep increase curve on the amount they’d be fined. If you agree then please contribute to the thread.

Things i was told were bad, like realllllllyyy bad ( i would get instant permaban if i posted screenshot of one of such “convos” here) – despite all reports i kept seeing same people every day in matches.

You know what happened when i tried to bring attention to the issue? Imagine you get robbed, go to police and officer beats you half dead – yeah that.

Counter comping and getting good team compositions is a huge part of the game. Thief, unfortunately, is often not a very viable pick especially in previous seasons. By not switching, you’re already throwing the game before it begins. Seasons are inherently a cesspit of frustration and overboiling tempers because everyone is out to win, and you deliberately reducing your team’s chances of winning by picking bad classes is a pretty understandable cause for people to get fed up.

I’m by no means defending the actions of people who can’t control their own tempers, but you shouldn’t expect people to be nice to you either for screwing your own team over. I too, want to play whatever I want and to hell with everyone else, but I understand its a team game and to win, you sometimes gotta make sacrifices and not be selfish. It’s a two way street.

It’s pretty much a function of how good looking you are, that’s science. I 1v1ed somebody in 10s flat yesterday and he thanked me for it unprompted.

Last one I played I had a thief whisper me about how I cant play power builds, how I condi cheese. I couldnt even whisper back as he had me blocked. Not even the decency to insult me over map chat, lol. Also, I did 700K power damage that match :/

For some reason thieves are vastly overrepresented in that area. Hmm.

WvW has much more classy players. Yesterday where mailed a cheese wedge after we 3v1 someone, lol. It was the highlight of the evening.

Lol it goes both ways. When I played thief, I got some hate about a month ago from somebody who was mad that I killed him while he ran away. He even used the word “backstab” though idk if he even knows the skill.

Let’s be happy, now that MMR is displayed people will be able to vent their anger and justify it with a number ^^

I never had so much extreme insults…most I had is “I’m the dumbest thief ever” or “plz uninstal the game” I suppose it’s because all my answers to them was game oriented and more or less on point regarding the game we had…But I suppose people all react differently to insults. I don’t really care as they insults you based on 15min of which you barely talk with them.

As for the backstabs guys you just ned to tell them " I know right ? did you see how it wreaked you ? it’s so OP" and they feel like you agree with them…or they just block you !

I don’t know why some of you love the victim mentality so much and worry about stuff like this so much. Block the person and move on. Report them if you want to. A-net will ban people but they probably aren’t going to ban them off of one report from one person. The tools are there. You are questioning human behavior that has always existed and will always exist. My advise is to not get your panties in a bunch over annonymous internet trolling/raging. Your life will be a lot better for it.

i got you all beat with a first of mine today. a team mate started to cry saying we was trash and i had to look at the score to make sure my eyes were not playing tricks on me we was winning even won the match looked like we was doing a good job rotating to me

There is trash talking and verbal abuse. Pretty easy to tell the difference and trash talking can backfire in pleasant ways.

For an example of trash talking, there was a game I played where it was close, like 25 points. We were behind and this opponent said in map chat that the thief (me) was the reason we had lost the match. (I’m pretty sure I was 1st/2nd in the rankings for points on my team). I ignored him, focused on rotations, and ultimately we won by 25 points.

Certainly made the victory more satisfying for me.

Threatening to report you in an empty threat if you have said nothing bad back to them. When you click report you get the warning about abuse of the report feature so if they report you for nothing they do more damage to themselves.
I’ve met a player like that though. He started whispering abuse for nothing, blocked me so I couldn’t ask what I’d done wrong. Then he did the “Ctrl T” on me, I then put the target above his head, hey, i don’t want to play with that target constantly in my face. He whispered that he was reporting me.
I did report him for verbal abuse. He had said some nasty stuff though. I hadn’t said anything to him, good or bad, if he reported me wouldn’t that have been worse for him as it would count as abusing the report feature?

People always feel like venting after a loss or something. In those cases they are worth a block but nothing more serious. People who use emotes or jumping on people fall into a similar category in part because it is relatively harmless and also because it is hard to say that the meaning you took is the meaning they intended.

It is when people start using language that is sexist, racist, homophobic, or contains death threats, kitten threats (or wishing those on them) that it crosses the line. Telling someone to stop playing the game also crosses a line, imo, because it goes against the spirit of playing a game with others. If the only way a person can play with another player is to threaten them, make them feel unsafe, or otherwise make them feel unwelcome to play, then that person is a problem for the community.

Anet is free of course to handle reports as their own policies dictate. We as players however are free to report them. There is a big difference between Anet saying “abuse of reporting feature” and the community saying “we reported this person because they violated community standards of common decency and respect.”
