Ranger or Thief?
roll ele if you gonna play solo and try to carry
thief is close to impossible to carry solo atm
ranger is possible but you would need to be pretty good and probably run condi build
thief pros:
- can rotate fast, can cause outnumbered situations fast
- decent escape tools
- certain amount of CC
- one of the best rezzes atm
cons:
- you can’t 1v1 anyone with same skill atm (besides other thieves ofc)
- you have to rely on your team to hold points as you can’t neither contest them nor defend them
- you can’t stay long in big fights
Problem with ranger is that it just doesn’t have much team support nor great surivival. You can play condi build, have OK surivival/dmg and defend points but todays faceroll builds (see mes, eles) will just beat you anyway.
Now thing with eles is: they have everything. Besides stealth maybe. Absurd surival and sustain, really good dmg thanks to fire trait line, pretty good moblity if you don’t waste CDs so switching between points can be done pretty well on current dd build. Also, CCs, heals for teammates etc. The only downside is if you face multiple necros alone you will go down (but who wouldn’t)~

Already have an ele
My account is dd ele,
bunker guard,
warr,
signet necro,
soldier engineer
So I do have better but I’m undecided on the thief or ranger to fill my last spot hahaha
Thief
Only 1 viable build, almost 0 cc, dies from every AoE, dies in teamfight if not used right in 1 sec, Nice burst dmg, almost 0 sustain, Possibilty for Invis ambush plays high skillcap almost no condi cleanse, great in escapes, can be pain in kitten to finnish off.
Ranger
Many good builds, insane Trap condi, insane CC spam (taunt knock fear taunt again 3secstun/daze knock from pet) nice survi, good panic button"signet of stone" low skill cap can be played by total kitten and still does well, good survi, averange condi cleanses, not that great in escapes(unless you yolo GS away), mot many “sudden” burst but every skill feels like nice hit. Sometimes “Random” DMG spikes from pet/GS2 skills that makes you wonder how the kitten did this hit this hard. Always is pain in kitten to finnish off.
Mentioned thief coz of how kitten they performed in wts haha. Quite a few seem to dislike both then lol
Double post. Seems like I’m better sticking with my roster and ignoring thief/ranger hahaha… I rotate often between my warrior, Dd Ele, bunker guard and signet necro atm. Those are my top classes
As a ranger main, go for thief lol.
I think its just a more fun class tbh…and in the right hands IT CAN CARRY for 1 reason – superior mobility so capping/decapping is your advantage to helping win the match.
Also, you are helpful in teamfights because you have the capability to come in from stealth and burst down whatever you want and disengage before you targeted.
Also shadow refuge + team mate rez is big time in teamfights.
I think its a much more skillful class to play than ranger but more rewarding as well.
If you want an easier time and want to pew pew with longbow go ranger.
if you want to play more of an assassin type character, go thief.
cons:
- you can’t 1v1 anyone with same skill atm (besides other thieves ofc)
- you have to rely on your team to hold points as you can’t neither contest them nor defend them
- you can’t stay long in big fights
The first point is false. I have beat plenty of other classes in 1v1 on thief. Engineer, Guardian, Warrior, etc. I use Sword/pistol and just bait until they have no cool downs. It is fairly easy especially since all the cheap teleporting spots are still open (looking at you through floors and ceilings).
The last two are true. Your role is not to hold points, it is to decap and wreck weak people. Your role is not to be in the middle of the team fight. Instead go decap then hit their back.
As to the OP, Ranger is alright and fun but Thief is far more useful. If you want to play at a constant disadvantage then play Ranger. If you want to play a class that is useful and slightly fun go Thief.

Posts like this is why you’ll never get a true response in what is viable in PvP regarding classes because everyone is so biased. This guy is clearly a thief who is mad about the survivability of his class, hence it showing in his frustration when describing thief.
Thief and ranger are decent choices, pick whatever suits your playstyle. Thief has good power builds and suits a more versatile mobile conquest playstyle, and ranger has some power and condi options. Power would be for assisting group fights and using GS w/ quick draw for decapping points with mobility and condi has decent node defense along with great soft cc to assist your teammates in bursting down (taunt, chills, immobs, pet fear / knockdowns , etc).
Pick whatever suits you though
Maguuma
best option is to play ranger for 1 week, see how it goes.
try thief next week and compare the two.
Pick what you enjoy the most
Try out different builds and specs.
You can be that annoying thief that runs around the map decapping everything and annoying the crap out of enemy by just stealthing around.
Then try being an annoying burst thief who just comes into a team fight for the sole purpose of backstabbing and than running away to stealth and do it again later lol.
Pick what you like honestly
Thief sounds like a playstyle i haven’t got covered on my other classes so I’ll give that a go. I’ve got the ele, bunker guard etc for the other roles. So having a thief could be fun to try out if I’m bored of brute forcing everything. So it’s basically a scavenger. Run around capping nodes that people cap and leave, stealth until someone’s low in a teamfight, pop them off , restealth and run around recapping etc again? Actually sounds like something I’d love to play. Always been a sub rogue in wow since launch so that’s all I did in wow PvP. Interesting…
I personally find ranger to be a lot more fun to play and I would definitely choose it for the last slot if you do WvW roaming at all, but if all you do is PvP and you only have 1 slot you should go thief.
Thieves bring better burst for +1’ing a fight, they are way more mobile for decapping, and they are better at disengaging. If you ever start running with a team you will be a lot more useful as a thief.
The best choice would be to buy a couple more character slots and have 1 of every profession. The more experienced you are with each class the easier they are to fight against.

Pretty much. Just know you are kinda glassy so you gotta be quick with everything you do.. don’t stay in fights that YOU KNOW you are not gonna win (cele ele DD lol)
Your job is to be a blur. Going into team fights for some quick steals/interrupts/backstabs than getting back out before the enemy targets you.
If you get targetted, you’ll go down QUICK. so you gotta be quicker in disengaging, stealthing out, etc.
Its very fun gameplay, but it requires a lot of practice as well..
I died A LOT lol when I first started, but you get better and better and it feels so goooood. You just start maniacally laughing in real life when you pull off annoying stealth backstab kills and stuff and you can tell it kittenes off the enemy a lot lol
If you want frustration; Ranger. If you want lol gameplay; Thief.
You haven’t played thief at all.
- D/P has Head shot which puts daze. There is zero cooldown for this skill and you can interrupt a stomp easily.
- Blinding Powder gives blind to enemies that are in your field. This is pretty much invulnerability.
- Shadow Arts D/P has plenty of sustain and condi cleanses.
4x Necromancer, 3x Mesmer, 4x Guardian, 4x Thief, 4 Revenant
It’s almost impossible for a Thief to carry a bad team. Thieves do very well if they are in good teams.
Depends, are you ok with getting disappointed every patch when your build diversity goes nowhere? If not, pick ranger.
Granted they don’t have the best line up atm, atleast you can make some very viable builds on it that work solo or in a team fight. Thief is very limited on options along with a very very high skill requirement to be seen as “effective” in either of these fields.
break. I feel like they should be back by now..”
Not that wow was ever hard but I only played sub rogue there got glad a few season here and there so I guess I’m ok at picking fights etc. Obv diff mechanics to gw2 but I guess the general outline is there. Again I have my bruiser classes already so this would be a nice alternative if I feel like queuing and being a general POS to people win or lose lol. ill create one and mess around with it.
