Now let me make it clear that I know how to fight thieves. I know how to try and avoid a backstab when they stealth. But I first have to know they’re there! I have to know I’m fighting one. I have 17k health and 2800 armor.

This just happened to me. Never saw him coming. Didn’t even know he was there. I don’t care what the design philosophy is, this just shouldn’t be possible.

Exactly what skill is required to pull this off? Downing a player from full health in literally zero time?

Edit: I was wrong about 2800 armor – I was adding the toughness to it. It’s 1800. But my point still stands that no matter what your armor is, it should be impossible to compress so much damage into such little time. I disagree. I love hotjoins. Sure, it may be a killfest but it still requires skill. I’ve been outplayed many times and I don’t like it, but it’s fair. I even say “Well played” at the end of it.

But this? I can’t commend the thief for pressing two buttons. There is no skill required to do that. I thought I was alone. Didn’t even know he was there.

Don’t use Frenzy.
Get Toughness.
Use a Stun breaker.
Get more defensive abilities.
Put defensive things on your Utility Slot.

He is a mesmer. Look at side death report, his name is Napera Umertu.

Well, mesmers have 15k base HP, he has about 300 vitality it seems. (The same as berserker’s adds.)

Looks like hes wearing the berserker’s amulet, if he wore the toughness one, he would need soldiers, and that would be more vitality.

Irrelevant. I thought I was alone. What stunbreakers are you going to use in 0.2 seconds? And what utility slots? I was down before I even saw him.

If he is using the beserker amulet, there is no way for him to get 2800 armor. It just doesnt make sense, 17K HP and 2.8K armor on a mesmer. In the same build. Even if he used shaman jewel and tufness runes to go with the beserker, and added 300 from traits, he would only get 2.4K armor. He stated 2.8K armor. Its there in the OP. So, I ask: what buld is that? and what amulet? valkirye? rabid? cleric?

You probably copied glass cannon build off the internet then you went to pvp to kill your fellow players but got jumped by another no skill required burster, then you came here to complain about how unfair life is. Game is unbalanced in both 1vs1 and 5vs5, maybe you just realized that now, for the most PvPers tho it is a well known fact.

I’ve been saying this to myself quite a bit to day – ridiculous. I have been playing backstab on my thief and been amazed at the fact that I can take down squishy players from 100% to zero if I manage to catch them by surprise. I know from playing against thieves on my other toons that it is possible to counter it – but it’s really tough. It happens so fast that I feel you have to be preemptive about it – I see a lot of people saying they can react between the cnd and the backstab even if they didn’t know the thief was coming but I just find that hard to believe.

Definitely a hot join/free tournament issue – organized teams can handle these guys but if you are pugging then they are pretty efffective. my 2 cents…

Sorry. I know what is reasonable and what isn’t. If you say I’m full DPS, then I should be able to down someone in 0.5 seconds. I can’t. Because it’s not meant to happen.

I’m lvl 29 and I know what high damage is. This is aburd. I’m not denying that I’m susceptible to damage. But there’s a limit.

Define “lie”. Read up the terminology on the wiki. I was giving you the total armor since toughness is a straight add up to it.

Regardless – this kind of damage compressed into an instant should be impossible. NO class should be able to do this to anyone. I’ve doled out a lot of damage myself. I know what is “high” damage and what is “impossible damage”.

At least it should require some skill to do this. As a mesmer, I have to look at positioning, make sure my clones are out, immobilize the target to shatter etc. Please tell me what skill is being displayed to deal out this absurd damage?

This is from stealth. It’s not as if I saw him and he vanished and I relaxed. I NEVER SAW HIM!

Dude, if you wanna make a stand that a thief should not do 7k dmg with steal and 14k with backstab, go ahead, im not stoping you, in fact im in favor of reducing some skill modifiers: BS down from 2.4 to 2.0, and most importantly, heartseeker should only have 2 states, not 3, with the second one starting at less than 66% HP and reducing the skill modifier from 2.0 (almost the same as a perfect BS) to 1.6. Im a thief, with all my heart, but i understand that ppl are revolted with “cheeselers”, so be it. It would be a way to separate the wheat from the chaff. However, you cannot lie. If you do so, and i see the post, ill post back. Im very familiar with #s, and i know when ppl lie about their stats. This post climbed on a lie to gain strenght, and that is not fair.

I agree tho that dropping someone from 100% hp to zero in under1 sec should not be allowed even if he is full glass cannon ( what happened with play your way promises maybe i wanna play glass cannon necro, not just classes that can get away with it?) , if for no other reason then because not every fight is 1vs1 you cant keep your eye on everyone in team fight and being dropped by burster in under 1 sec while you are fighting his team mate and possibly dont have dodge available atm is a bs pvp design.

My main is a ranger my friend i dont play cheap shotting classes like mesmers and thieves.

As long as they give thieves longer boons (double the duration of boons.), Sword Traits, Shadow Clones, Confusion, and more Condition Removal, more regeneration, more fury, higher initiative regeneration, better survivability, better group support.

They can nerf the burst.

You don’t add up toughness to armor and call that your total armor. The toughness displayed = the armor you have. If you’ve been playing since beta you should know this.

If the thief did approach you completely stealthed from afar – with Shadow Refuge for example – I do agree that particular capability should be removed. That’s pretty rare in hotjoin, however.

Well to be fair the stat panel is pointlessly convoluted, and only the right side should show, and it should give you the calculation when you highlight them. ie highlight toughness and see it is your armor value + defense. The rest of the information is mostly irrelevant, except for damage calculation purposes, which dont need to be readily displayed anyways.

I have NO problems with 7k or even 14k damage. BUT, everything has (or should have) a counter. As a mesmer, my damage is possible only when the conditions are right. There are plenty of situations when it’s just not possible and I have to run.

I also have no issues being screwed by a skilled player. It’s happened lots of times. Sometimes by thieves themselves. It always sucks naturally but it’s fair. I replay the match (I record them), see what I did wrong, , see what the other person did to me and how I can counter it the next time.

My problem with this particular combo from stealth is that there is no counter. It’s understandable if the thief was there, then vanished and I start dodging around to avoid a backstab, the thief is good and skillful so lands it anyway and this happens a couple of times and I die. That’s ok. That’s a fair fight. That’s something I can improve on and learn to play better.

But to START a combo from stealth with NO chance of counterattack, with NO chance to use a stunbreaker….I have HUGE problems with that. Because it doesn’t have a counter. There’s nothing I can do about it. I can’t say “Next time I’ll try xyz….”

Newsflash – Stealth combined with huge burst is a failed design in every unimaginative MMO that uses it.

Newsflash 2 – Low TTK = low skill cap in an MMO and wrongly puts the skill onus on the target rather than person playing the faceroll wannabe FPS class (just with less twitch, less aiming, thus less skill)

Its called Aegis and Virtue of Courage, if you don’t like thieves, maybe you should play Guardian? It has a low skill cap and a lot of there skills are well rounded to be against burst.

Mesmer however is not, and takes a much higher skill cap.

Here is a build I threw together, now you will have no problem against burst thieves, your welcome.

Mesmer however is not, and takes a much higher skill cap.

Its called Aegis and Virtue of Courage, if you don’t like thieves, maybe you should play Guardian? It has a low skill cap and a lot of there skills are well rounded to be against burst.

Mesmer however is not, and takes a much higher skill cap.

Again, this doesn’t matter when we’re talking about 0.5 second reaction times. I’d like to see you do the same. It’s not humanly possible no matter how skilled you are. By the time your finger has pressed an escape button you’ve lost 18k health.

If you see the thief first and then they stealth you can take defensive measures. Not when they start out in stealth.

Be reasonable.

I’ve beaten a lot of thieve and gotten beat by them too. I used to die a lot more when I was starting out, but by lvl 30 I know how to counter them.

This however, is still unacceptable.

@Bhagwad. you can build your Mesmer to bunker. I have to agree with the rest here that your total armor is not 2800 the number on the right is the sum of the number on the left plus your base armor. However for those that think a Mesmer needs to reroll just to bunker. It is entirely possible to out bunker guardians (not ele’s) as a Mesmer by going 0/0/20/20/30. Give it a shot and run all soldiers. You will shine.

I agree I was wrong about the armor. I’ve also played a bunker mesmer with a retaliation build – as someone posted here a while ago called “The immortal mesmer build”.

I just enjoy this playstyle more. And while it makes me more susceptible to damage, there should be limits.

yes this is true. I am however of the philosophy that if you are a Glass Cannon just be ready for the wet sneeze that will make you crumple. I run GC builds a lot as well and its great but I die a lot too just incase I get caught off guard. Its just one of those things that is inherent about being a glass cannon. And the only class that can really be GC and survivable is thieves due to stealth and its not that stealth makes them invuln or anything people just stop and wait with their thumbs in their you know where waiting to get killed.

To be fair, a stunbreak won’t help anyone against backstab + steal combo. A thief can pull off the combo from stealth and nearly 100-0% many players if using assassin’s signet.

But yeah, zerker’s amulet, likely a glass cannon shatter mesmer build, ect. A thief will global you if his burst is up. Same thing for you, if you shatter the thief while he doesn’t expect it he’ll likely die.

Course the thief has the advantage of stealth and a burst combo that’s easier to pull off and nearly instant.

I’m actually comfortable with fighting thieves. I know to dodge, swing around to avoid a backstab etc. I’d written about a possible issue on the forums earlier at the request of the moderators: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/thief/The-thief-and-its-gameplay-Your-feedback/page/46#post1356994

I used to die a lot more often against thieves till I learned how to counter them. But like I said, this is still absurd. As a mesmer I have a lot of other defensive skills like Decoy, Blink, and of course my clones to divert damage away from me. I don’t need to rely too much on armor. But this bursting from initial stealth when you never even know the thief is there…has no counter.

It should be impossible.

So maybe A GCD between Steal and the ability to use other skills? IDK. I do see how your numbers are a bit ridic even for someone with little toughness.
