Season 4 Ranked Matchmaking Change
What makes this season bad is the incentive to lose. I had a match with ruby/ sapphire players on temple. I went home, and before I had home capped, all 4 were downed. There is no way anyone is that bad. Either they are intentionally playing bad, or they got carried based on the fact that they had to win matches based on the mm.
Believe it or not, I think people are actually trying. Most likely they all stood on point and died from DH traps, and then I’m sure they rush to forums to complain about OP DH.
LOL Hahahahaha I’ve seen that happen too many times already. Only now instead of raging at my teammates after then 3rd time that happens to them in a match I just start auto-running at that point and pay attention to my 2nd moniter playing another game or watching movie or something and dare them the report me and really DARE ANet to ban my account for not playing farm animal to such a sorry match. I mean how does this sound on Reddit, Youtube, Facebook, and Twitter. " Got Banned because I didn’t 1 v 5 the other team in a supposedly competitive sPvP match. I’m pretty sure that is grounds for legal debates of the sorts.
But fear not I haven’t even touched unranked in the past 4 or 5 days and haven’t touched Ranked since mid Season 3 with at most 15 games played. So the threat of such actions being taking apond my account is fairly super slim.
But at least I admit it!

Because they either make matchmaking that favors players with high MMR or with low MMR. There was never middle ground.

So after being stuck in mmr hell that is ruby a guy with low mmr decided to party with me for duo queue, and we literally stomped the crap out of the other team. And what made me sad was the other team, who never even dodged once in team fights, had 3 diamond players while I had to fight every match against pro league players only to lose at the end.
After going to the detail tab all I could do was start laughing because it made me feel stupid for trying to climb to legendary by solo queuing. Apparently people with low MMR can and have already cruised through their way to legendary. This killed my motivation to be competitive and try my best because now I learned that all I need to do to win was to grab someone who never played pvp and carry the match. Hell my team decided to leave mid for chieften and the enemy team followed us instead of capping node.

Nah, I genuinely don’t think Anet are clueless enough to believe their own marketing spiel. “This change will benefit the customer” is straight out of Marketing for Dummies. That’s what they are supposed to say when they don’t want to be open with their customers.
The match making change was made to allow more baddies to advance through leagues and have a better shot at completing the legendary wings before the year ends. They flat out say so in the message that Gaile posted, stating that the change will widen the skill range of players in each division. Anet messed up the incentive scheme when they tied a legendary item to a ladder system, which is a violation of their “all things are attainable to all people regardless of personal skill” motto. We the players end up suffering for their lack of PvP system design experience.

So,50/50 is back.
Well, at least the matchmaking is fair. Despite what players say, this is BY FAR the most fair matchmaking system. We’ve had 50/50 since season 1 and, I think, the beginning of the game.
Unfortunately, the problem IS and ALWAYS will be, the league system. The league system just doesn’t work in this game. As long as you have pips, matchmaking will always be a problem. Guaranteed.
Fair would be everybody having to exert equal effort to climb but right now the bads are being carried by the better players due to this stupid system.
Not really having fun when I get keyboard turners on my team in diamond. Sure I might win if I give it my 150% and 1v2/3 and carry hard but what’s the point when that guy who is key board turning progress just as fast if not faster than me?

This thread was less about rage and more about how inconsistent anet is, although admittedly they are sort of saying “hey, most of the good players already got their stuff, so let the little guy get some achievements.” If that’s true, fine but just say it and don’t pretend.
I am competitive and think that better players should get more reward and more prestige. This includes both the in game currencies and the badge next to your name.
PIPS in all seasons so far have failed to represent good players.
In season 1 and 4, as has been explained here, someone with a low MMR can end up with easier games than someone with a high MMR and advance further (even though they are definitely worse, as per their MMR).
Season 2 and 3 tried to make pips mean something however they sort of failed too. Since there is a ceiling on reward and “rank” (legend), many players quit playing and create a vacuum of talent in legend. This lets people in diamond advance to legend when they should really get to a point and keep losing to low legend players. When the diamonds advance and quit, then the ruby players can too.
It’s like letting sediment rise to the top and then dumping off the top layer every once in a while: at any time you lok at the layers of sediment, the lightest stuff is at the top, but it’s not the lightest stuff that was ever there.
This means that getting to legend early in season 2 or 3 was harder since all teh good players were still active and climbing. In the end of season 2 and 3, they were all gone, and anyone who was still playing had an easier time (not competitive).
Decaying MMR doesn’t have this problem because it requires good players to keep playing and beating the players who are just slightly less good than they are. This enforces a meaningful MMR and ranking system.
Realistically they should scrap this entire pip system and restart it fresh.
In order to entice the not so hardcore PvP players (PvX/WvW/PvE) to play leagues they should make the legendary backpack available to them, just make it a bit longer for them to get (eg. requires X wins) compared to better players.
They can still keep some sorta division thing but don’t tie it to rewards or ap or anything of the sort. PvPers have no need for these things and the rest will comaplin about not being able to attain this.
The most important thing is, division needs to be tied to MMR. If your MMR is above a certain value you move up a division and so on, kinda like how SC2 did it in vanilla where you’d have different leagues. The MMR also needs to be publically displayed, like games such as league of legends.
This would basically create competition (MMR/division/prestige) and at the same time allow the casual population to flourish more in PvP than it currently does. Nobody likes being told they’re trash just because their team is like 10x better than them due to matchmaking. It is a lot more satisfying playing with/against people who are of similar skill to you and realizing that you won/lost because of what you did or didn’t do.

I agree with you a 100% on rating decay. It’s frustrating to think about how some aspects of this game have been so neglected for four years now. Teensy-tiny aspects such as competitive infrastructure.
Just to give everybody a bit of historical perspective, GW2 has never in its entire existence had a functioning rating decay system. Ever. Even when we had the old MMR-based leaderboard in 2013, the “decay”, and I’m using the term very loosely here, only effected the leaderboard placement, not the hidden Glicko MMR of players. So you could idle for a month and drop out of the leaderboard, come back, play one game and be top 100 again.
How’s that for competitive?

I dont think MM is the issue. I think the community is just spent. My last 5 matches has had some just sit when they felt it was over.
1 warrior sat at home when it was 350-200 and we made a comeback as he sat and he dc due to being in active. The last 2 matches both times it was a engy (different players) but they also sat and one complained about never winning a match and how he was 1 tier away from the legendary wings. The match before those 2 i had a rev and ele constantly die and when the rev just stood there when we had a chance. Score was like 480-420 and we had home and far and mid was neutral. Our rev quit trying and the ele instant died in a 1 vs 1 at home vs a DH.
I find this to be less about MM. If i may a few things,
1- Players in the game
For what ever reason there are alot of people who quit during matches/ lash out against team mates/ or simply quit caring when they lose a fight. No way to report this and the league PiP system is based on winning matches.
2-The game balance
Lets be honest all of the seasons have kind of been bad. Season 1 was bunker wars as well as season 2 with 2 classes at a time not being viable. This season there are no defensive builds and some classes are simply better at being sustainable while doing high damage. So once again Anet has failed to create a good balance.
3- Incentive
None, there is literally no reason to play ranked other then the title. The wings dont look very good (the exotic ones actually look better) and to top it off they have not brought back leader boards. What kind of ranked season doesnt have a leader board? Anet says wait we brought Guild leader Boards, wow the ones with decay and extended que times? ATM some of the Top 10 Leader Board teams are currently 2-0.
Lets just say it the Pro Leagues have been straight trash for the PvP community. I like the Esports aspect because its suppose to keep them honest. Plus seeing the best players in the game in matches and compete against one another is good causal fun. The set up of the ranked seasons by Anet has to be graded as a F from a PvP player looking for a actual rating system.

Its funny because thats just every where in the game. If people want to say the game isnt dying ok thats your place but my goodness.
Im on Crystal desert server and we have 4 servers on our team (including us) and we are facing other servers with 2 and 2 and none of the maps can get filled up and then PvP has lost all its mojo.
I mean maybe its time to down load Pokemon Go and catch some sun.

As for your comment about WvW scoring, yeah I and many people I know don’t play for score since that’s just coverage/population. If I go to WvW it’s because there’s fights to be had and people to be killed not because I want to back cap a bunch of camps and kill NPCs so my server wins.

Very well said on both aspects of GW2’s I for one and my “Whole” guild of WvW fighters feel the same way. The problem is that when you have tryhards on your server that follows your guild from map to map and then when you tell these “insert word here” players that you refuse to hold their hands and to get better they get heated and tell your guild to leave map because you will not help them 3 v 1 another guild, after they explicitly kept following us map to map. Yes I am talking about some Ex YB again “insert word here” guild that transferd to my server in order to get a free ride to T1 on our work. And now that they see we are not after blobbing and just want to fight they expressly call us worthless to our server [Just going to throw out a big LOL on that]
But back on the topic of sPvP you just basically have a system in GW2’s sPvP like WvW that promotes players to be “insert word here”, instead of promoting players to be competitive and helping grow the community, and entice more players to try and become part of the community. We get it GW2 is a casual player game. However when you try to causalize a competitive mode as ANet has done in the past and Season 4, you end up chasing away most of the “COMPETITIVE PLAYERS THAT ARE NOT MAKING MONEY” in said game mode making it at best, stagnate.

Majority of them are, especially when you know you’re the best player in the team and your team gets stomped 150 to 500 despite you doing everything you can.
And also that video isn’t matchmaking, that was an actual tournament. In this matchmaking anet purposely put you in a losing game to 50/50 your mmr

Wrong! I would be understanding if you had said instead, maybe GW2’s sPvP isn’t the right thing for you. I say this because this game has the only ranked system that has such a long streak of ugly landside, no chance at all of winning matches, in any game. I have played in my 15 plus years of competing at some level or another in either MMOs, MOBAs, FPSes, TPSs, or Survival games that was designed to give the favor of winning to the monster.
Most games I’ve played with a similar 50/50 ranking system would at-least attempt to give you the illusion that you and your team has a chance at winning. By allowing very close games that still put you near the 50/50 win/lose ratio, where in GW2’s sPvP system it is blatantly obvious at near the start you are going to not only lose but get stomped into the ground by a supremely inherently better team. One that was just chosen by the MM to win this match to achieve it’s goal of 50/50 win/lose ratio, to more then likely a premade.
If you expect players to take such psychological abuse match after match, in a “video GAME that they paid for” in the hopes of a competition like it’s “A OKAY”, then you my fellow gamer are seriously delusional.

If both teams have the same overall weight to carry it is fair. If you are not at a systemic and systematic disadvantage courtesy of the MM it is fair.
The problem isn’t that the match isn’t fair when the odds are 50/50. It is a lot better than s2 or s3 in that regard. The problem is climbing the reward track under a system that seeks to put people at a 50/50 overall win/loose ratio rather than 50/50 odds each match.
Soloq should not provide obviously unfair match-ups just because of a rating that isn’t even yours alone (team game mean MMR is a team rating not yours alone). The only way to avoid what you seem to hate is going premade. But if you go with soloq you should not be expecting favors by flashing the system “your” rating.
this season is by far the worst in terms of MM. now u ask why? its basicly season 1 w/o the pip system people like about S1. forcing players 50/50 W/L ratio will make these season so grindy. i mean someone just posted some time ago about reaching legendary in 200+ games WTF, even ANET said that they bringing Season 1 MM even if means less prestige. these season good players or should i say decent players have to carry 1 or 2 newbies or bad players. while bad players think its a good MM making because they win game while being carried. now they will think they are getting good. but when MM change again they come back and spam MMR HELL. im frustrated with season 4 but i know ill make it to legendary if i want to. but atm i just couldnt find the motivation to keep playing after a game or 2 a day. heck these season is so bad anet forgot to put in the S4 title.

Lube Up or Shut Up was what I was referring to (I Luck I and Evelinn), I see Lube Up or Shut Up in 2-4 man groups in my solo Qs quite often. The three man group on my side had amber and emerald and were horrible.
My point here is just that not only are the division match ups extremely uneven against me,(very bad luck I assume) but as a solo Q player having to go against people in premades is frustrating to say the least. The lower division premade on my side just went and died constantly leaving me to fight 3-4v1 which is impossible unless the opponents are horrible. I had to entertain myself during that painful match by killing a choice target before i could get zerged down eachtime.
Like “I Luck I”. he had irritated me in the past so he was one of my targets that match. I went in spiked him down almost instantly and then ran from 3 other guys as long as I could, but not much could be done more than that with the players I had on my side.
On the subject of giving up, it makes sense because it’s winner take all for the pip.
MMR can take into account loss differential. If you are losing 500-499, that’s basically a non loss as the winners shouldn’t get much more MMR increase and the losers shouldn’t get much decrease. This occurs in WvW already.
This is just another failure of the pip system to make games fun and competitive. Even season 1 gave incentive to keep games close against a better opponent by offering a non pip loss if you were outmatched.
What staggers me about season 4 is how they have gone backwards to basically the most illogical combination of rules for matchmaking and rank.
As has been pointed out, there is nothing wrong with 50/50 matchmaking. There is nothing wrong with pip matchmaking. But when you use MMR from a 50/50 matchmaking to promote rank via pips, #wtf

My win/loss is so up and down! Its hard to move up divisions. as Winning a couple then losing a couple so losing any pips that are gained.
So are we going to hear from Anet about if/when something will be done about this MM system? Will it be unchanged until the season is over or will they plan to change anything during the season?

It will be always the case. Pip range don’t show skill at all, except for the first week or two.
It would be better to match bads (1,2,3), average (4,5,6,7) and decent (8,9,10) together without the pip range for faster queue. A 10 Amber, is still a 10.
But wasn’t it the biggest issue for season 1? I mean the top players had actually more challenging fights than beginners improving so in the end the top players were climbing the league slower then average player. Hence the league was not displaying skills.
That is why they went to season 2 MM, that is all good players within a pip range were paired together against the worse so they could crush them and climb the league faster until they found a pip range where players were equally skilled. In that case there was frustration from both side because games were either to hard or not challenging enough.Maybe a better solution would be to give more pips than one in case of victory, but contrary to season 1, not to players beating the odds but based on MMR compared to team rating or compared to the league you are in (for example top 20 % MMR in amber gain 5 pips then 4 in emerald…). In other word allow the good players to escape low levels more rapidly.
Without ANET showing US our MMR, you can assume it was like this. But I am sure it was not.

Actually, season 1 or season 4. I had bads queuing with avg+ or decent players in my group.
They need to SHOW us numbers so we know for sure if the system is Bugged or Not.
So… obviously, they balanced MMR for team like this:
10, 7, 5, 2, 1 vs. 5,5,5,5,5 Who win?
25 vs 25
*So, they should removed divisions or pip range and only use MMR to match players up. Put decent together vs decent, avg vs avg, bad vs bad. *

Don’t tie pip grinding to show skill. Let MMR do the work. When I bought Gw2 in 2012, they promise me it would be a no-grind your gear experiences. Please, grinding games is even worse.

I am sorry, the MM is not fair.
It’s not fair to put noob with average with decent players.
What is fair, is letting noob play together.
Average players play together.
Decent players play together.
It’s unfair to have match where I have 10 in my team (for humility, let’s say I am 6) then the other match, I have 2.
Fair is 1,2,3 play together (noob).
4,5,6,7 (average)… and 8,9,10 (decent) in team vs team of the same category.
So yeah we have a balanced MM that put 1 and 10 together versus 5,6,7 and guess what…? Autowin for the 5,6,7 and so… they know how to make you win and lose 50% of your time.
With a fair system, it would not be a 50%/50% by fixing team with MMR. It would be 50% win ratio for some, 40% for others and 60%+ for the true carrier of this game.
What I did just gave you, is the old MM system that unranked have right now or we had in rank for the first 3 years of this game.

Need to look at solo queue party composition! How is 2 guardians, a ranger, thief and elle matched with 3 rangers, a thief and necro!
Also go back to older seasons where teams couldnt fight none teams unless it was a 3 + party.

We need prestige rewards that are not accessible for casual, while casual can have great rewards to work for in spvp to bring back in pve or wvw.
Let’s say Ascended casual stuff, prestigious legendary stuff.
We don’t need 10 new items per month like in PVE.

50/50 match making is not garbage.
Just as you get bad players in your team,so does the other team,as the MM tries to match the teams as evenly as possible.
If you can carry your weight,and if your team mates can do the same,and if the other team can’t do the same,you’ll win the match.
Apparently there are a lot of players that git carried by the fixed matches of seasons 2 and 3,and now that the odds are even seem to have difficulties in advancing.Although it would be nice if tier and pip protection were removed completely,you still are not able to advance from ruby to diamond playing solo queue if you can’t play your class.
If you get carried by premades,that’s another story.I don’t want “bad” players on my team. I want both teams to have players of equal skill. With S1/S4 match making, teams feel like they were artificially made to have “equal skill”. I don’t like that type of team balancing. I should feel like the people on my team are “on par” with me
