Spvp destiny. An important message
I support this thread, players want to hear something about the additions to pvp that were promised.
Also, if you let me I will copy a post I made mathematically showing why paids dont pop. My apologies to anyone that has already read it. You can skip the following text:
8 teams join a paid tournament. Each team is made of 5 people who spend 5 tickets each.
8 teams * 5 members * 5 tickets/member = 200 tickets spent.
- One team will end 1st. That’s 120 gems each. 120*5 = 600 gems
- One team will end 2nd. That’s 80 gems each. 80*5 = 400 gems.
- Two teams will end 3rd/4rth. That’s 20 gems each. 20*(5+5)=200 gems.
- Some gems are given as lottery prize, however no one knows the exact % and it seems very random. My experience says you will get about 20-40 gems every 3 or 4 tournaments.
Total gems given as reward = 1200 gems + (low, random amount).
Conclusions:
- With 1200 gems a total of 100 tickets can be bought
maths: 1200 gems/ 360 priceof30tickets = 3,33 stacks of 30. 3,33*30 = 100 tickets.
- 200 tickets were spent to join a tournament, and only 100 were returned back. Also, a 83,3% of the tickets are given to the top/most experienced teams. The other teams are left with 16,7 tickets and that means 0,556 tickets per player.
(considering top teams the ones getting 1st and 2nd positions)
- Only 2 teams out of 8 can play paid tournaments continously. That means the 6 worse teams will have to farm 4 (2 teams) or 5 (6 teams) free tournaments to play a single paid. The average is 4,75 free tournaments to farm.
Considering each free tournament takes 45 minutes, and considering you win 100% of free tournaments (which is not mathematically true) we can calculate the amount of time an average team has to spend to play 1 paid tournament.
4,75*45 minutes = 213,75 minutes = 3,56 hours. Since i didnt count the daily ticket (yay!) we could say the time spent is from 3 to 3,5 hours.
- 75% of the teams (6/8) have to farm 3 hours to play a single paid tournament. Also, 4/8 of them (50%) can only play a single round. A single round takes 10-15 minutes.
That means 50% of the teams aiming competitive pvp in gw2 have to farm 3 hours to play 12,5 minutes of competitive pvp. Another 25% of teams (which are better) are rewarded with 25 minutes of competitive pvp every 3+ hours.
T1 teams = best teams
T2 teams = good teams
T3 teams = worst/new/50% teams
- T1 teams (that are already better) can practice paid tournaments 100% of their time.
- T2 teams (that win T3 teams but get farmed by T1) can practice paid tourments 13,8% of their time
- T3 teams (people wanting to start at competitive pvp) can practice 6,94% of their time.
—> T2 & T3 teams quit pvp or play free tournaments 86-93% of their time . Since free tournaments are pug stomping they will hardly get better.
—> T1 teams are getting better and better, while T2 and T3 teams improve very slowly
—> Only T1 teams queue paids. Since the gem rewards remain the same (even if the teams playing paid are really good), we have 3 new tiers: T1.1, T1.2, T1.3
AMAZING FACTS WE REALIZED
200 tickets are spent to join a tournament and only 100 are given back. Anet gets 50% of the entry. That’s too high. To give you an example, a casino holding a poker tournament only claims 10% of the entry price.
83% of the prize is given to the top teams
Good, average & bad teams get 0,556 tickets per player
Only best teams can practice full time.
Good, average and bad teams can practice 6,94% or 13,8% of their time
Less people is encouraged to queue, but the amount of people to make a paid pop is quite high 8*5 = 40
If you have a life and decide to spend your money, you will have to pay 10€ for 800 gems. That’s 10€ for 66,6 tickets. Considering you an average team, you will get 0,5 tickets/paid tournament. Since you will play 13 tournaments with initial tickets you will gain 0,5*13=6,5 tickets, which means an extra game. You paid 10€ to play 13+1=14 tournaments, averaging 15-30 minutes of gameplay each tournament
—> you paid 10€ to play 210-420 minutes depending on your skill.
- To practice, a new team has two options:
*> play 10 hours for every hour a top one does. If a top teams plays 4 hours every day, a new team has to play 40 hours/day.
*> pay 10€ every 3,5 hours (if they are “bad”), pay 10€ every 7 hours (if they are “better”)
This awesome system we have makes queues longer, and that means T1, T2 and T3 teams can practice even less % of their time than was calculated.

“Paid” tournament. This tournament you need to pay to enter.Only requirement is that you have tickets. What an absurd to charge entry fee for a pvp.Embarrassing.
I want Anet to be successful. That said, I feel like the monetization strategy of paid tournaments is what killing spvp. There are hardly enough people graduating from pick-ups to free tournaments, much less interest in paid tournaments. We need organic interest before a competitive scene can flourish.
I hate to criticize without a clever replacement strategy to offer, but it there’s no obvious path like there is in League of Legends, for instance.
I’d be curious to know if the size of the PvP staff and the flexibility afforded to that team is contingent upon the success of the PvP monetization strategy. That would spell disaster in my book.
I think if they are going to spend all of their time developing PvE then they should get their micro transaction money from there, not from the PvP which they barely even support.
It’s crazy that the SPVP portion of this game is on life-support, and instead of coming around finding ways to resuscitate it, they instead come by and find out ways to make money off of it. They at least pulled their heads out of their behinds with the custom servers before ladders, but heck, it took them long enough.

Bumping this thread – it needs to get the attention of the devs.
They can’t make money off of sPvP so they really don’t seem to care that much.
I find myself logging in less and less now, even sPvP becomes boring now (and i quit pve awhile back as well) Very little incentive to play anymore with the sPvP basically left to rot away, don’t think i’ll last till the next update at this rate. They really dropped the ball on addressing sPvP, but in the end it was probably the correct financial decision for them; it would take alot more effort to go the esports route to make money, than it would be to go the micro-transaction pve route.
Dear Jonathan Sharp,
We really want to know some news from you to the near spvp future features.
We really want to stop play paid tournaments where only 100 players ( eu ) play it every evening ( thats embarassing for a new game, paid tournm should be played by thousands of thousands people ), starting a paid means 5people x 8 teams= 40 people so you can start 1 tourny or max 2 per time ( every time against same people )
We really want to play a single matchmaking game with an elorating ladder (cmon, 40 mins for a tournament is too much time )
I dont know if you’ve thought yet about it, i dont care.
Tell us why u won’t do this or yes do it! Cmon!
I really think that is exactly what they are working on right now. I think they felt that making a ladder that works well, would take a lot of time, so they tried to come up with a way of making it possible for teams to play equally skilled teams without a ladder and the current system is what they came up with.
So IMHO, it’s only a matter of time, because I think that ANet knows very well, that their current System isn’t really what the community is looking for in the long run.

THIS THIS.
spvp dont give money to arenanet so they dont care about it, anyone with eyes can see that.
PvE events that arenanet love why? everyone know the answer
me new pay tournament team dont want alyways play against same top teams, isnt fun at all. if we go to free tournament we win 90% of time (is so easy even against other guildies) than we go to paids and we loose most of time.
what we want is fight new teams on paids like us, we know exist some because on free tournaments we fight some teams with paid tournaments armour/weapons.
if they dont change lot of stuff next month i give up on this game. only want do sPvP ,WvW is a completly zerg IMO and PvE is PvE ,fun but after a bit is boring.
this game where more fun on betas than it is now!!!!!!

Wrong
With a matchmaking+ladder the entire community of gw1 will buy and play gw2 plus more people from other’s mmo will buy it also.
So let’s wait Jonathan reply to know what he thinks, if it is possible or not.
nobody wants to play bunker/roamer/support domination games
NOBODY
the developers, the top players, the commentators and the people on these forums who support it are WRONG
as in completely WRONG
dark souls is a more competitive game then guild wars 2, that’s embarrassing
snowball mayham is more competitive then GW2 spvp, and thats only when everyone is running around killing everyone
i mean kitten its been months and people are still here thinking its perfectly fine to play a bunker, trade EVERYTHING to be useless in any situation that doesnt involve sitting on a kittening node, are you people listening to yourselves?
holy kitten its like you want this game to rot, get a kittening clue look at some old world of Warcraft 2v2, look at some dark souls 1v1, look at capture the flag, look at bomb offensive game modes, look at ut99/2k4 assault objective game modes
and get rid of this stupid trinity which time and time again during development they said would never exist
i dont think it’d hurt for them to give us a hint as to what the future holds,
or just let us know our voices are being heard

If loving this game is wrong, I don’t wanna be right.
On a seperate note, maybe take a break for a while, get some fresh air, listen to some new age music, come back and give it a try later once the vein stops throbbing in your forehead.

In the other hand , its better to demant more 1-2 sec TKK attacks to show up and in the end forcing them to make all the <<balance specs>> like the Elementalist :P

@ Anet — take a page out of Blizzard’s book — they actually respond quite well to their players. They don’t leave them in the dark. The people who play gw2 actually love the game and are holding on — if Blizzard treated their people the way you guys treat us, they wouldn’t have any customer base left at all. Trust me.

Joey moved on and works for Zynga. We probably should move on too.
Being farmed by r40+ ele/mes/necro/guard/thief team composition in FREE tourneys all day (so many tryhards on NA -_-). I’m getting fed up with that. I’m r33 atm btw, and I got it all in tourneys, except the 3 hot join games I did when I first bought this unfinished game which is for some reason called Guild Wars 2

Wow…sarcasm is lost on someone.
Ya’ll need to calm down. About a month ago Jonathan revealed a lot of what is planned for PvP. We know what they are working on, just let them do it. People on this forum make some pretty wild accusations of how bad Arenanet is at communicating to their players, but they have explained multiple times their issues with revealing upcoming features to the players before they are ready. Its a catch 22 for them – they are crucified for making false promises or for saying nothing. Cut them some slack.

We want news about matchmaking+ladder.
40 mins for a tournament (paid or free) its too much this is killing gw2 pvp.
We love this pvp but we need this feature.
JS you said you are listening to us so we are waiting your reply.
Just thought I’d pop my head back in here to see if things have got any better for PvP. So… looks like no. Ah well, will check in again end of month.
Any news is better than silence really, even bad news.
Even Jay Wilson, the killer of the diablo franchise came out a week ago and told everyone that they were gonna scrap what they were planning for PvP in d3 and start anew. They explained why they made the change etc etc. No one is happy to hear it, but at least he informed everyone where along the lines the update was at. Here, we have no idea because no one from anet seems to actually read these sPvP forums, and the ones that do don’t respond to any threads about issues/problems/requests/changes/hopes etc for spvp.
When you stop giving people news, they stop checking to see if there’s any news, and then there is a bigger chance they never come back. The same people are gonna quit regardless, but if you give regular status updates, those same people who quit might come back when they see positive changes.
Been trying to do FREE tournaments for the last 2 hours. Average wait time is 15 minutes. All matches I had were 4v4 or 3v4. Good on you Anet!

Well said.
i agree. paids are way to expensive for new people that come in it. they play, get out. because no tickets. and because their being farmed by the top teams that are playing everyday. in 1 day there is just 1 to 3 tourns going on. and most of times u’ll lose against the good ones.

Thank you for answering at all. As a programmer I do understand it is VERY hard to give any timeframes. What you should do is telling us what exactly you are working on at the moment, because without this information many people feel like nothing is happening at all. A simple “We are implementing matchmaking right now.” is way better than a “Stay tuned, there will me more soon.”.

why cant you just say “yes we will have single match with rating” or “no we are keeping tournament and tweaking with more info soon”
because Sharp is higher rank probably. /rank so op
Because Jonathan knows more about what we are doing with PvP, and because we don’t say we are doing X until we are 100% doing it or else we get a lot of you said X, I wants it NOW!!!

Rage!!!!! I keep hearing about not until it’s ready, yet here we are playing a pvp game that wasn’t ready for release.
This ship is going down fast like Trion/Rift…Expecting staff cuts soon. How soon? I can’t tell you as I don’t want to ruin the surprise.

is there a reason you dont use a public test server to let us decide if you should do it 100% rather than telling us what we should like? i.e you release some tourney fixes and single match options on test server, we tell you what we like/dont like, rather than just releasing something live that nobody likes. I’m fearing you are going to release match making with seeded tournaments where the 8 seed will face the best team in the first round and likely never make it past round 1, ever.
Also if match making/ladder/ranking/whatever is due out in February how do you not know what direction you are going yet?
Example how RIFT does things (fwiw i quit rift a year ago, but still feel they communicated properly):
-post from dev about possibility of gear normalization on forums for discussion
-release gear normalization patch on test server
-discuss gear normalization with players
-end up not releasing gear normalization to live.
Had they done that the Anet way it would have been here is gear normalization on live server, oh you dont like it, well we will work on something for next patch rotation but dont have any details to tell you about yet.

They don’t have the staff for that!

Please stop the negativity. The game was forced to be rushed, but chill. They’re currently looking to expand the staff rather than making staff cuts.
But now they’re hating cause a brotha finally got some buzz

rift is one of the only mmos since wow to maintain a subscription fee for coming on 2 years now (march 2011 release). I wouldnt say they failed.
Good to hear a staff response for this.

That’s a pretty serious thing to say and it doesn’t make a whole lotta logical sense. They’ll likely be seeing staff cuts/transfers if they either give up on sPvP or when development of sPvP is in a healthy and stable state. Right now, the game has far too much potential for them to give up on it.
There are many levels and filters that important content information such as the future PvP features need to go through before being publicized as something that will be slated for release. All of the content is subject to change and can be dramatically altered by the time it is ready to be pushed into live. Things may look good on paper and while under development, but may not pan out that way and they’ll have to go back and make adjustments.
People cry lack of transparency, and when info is given but unexpected problems push back time tables or ideas are scrapped, people cry foul. That’s why When-it’s-Ready™ and Soon™ are thrown around so much. I’d be lying if I said that I’m not beyond impatient right now for new PvP content, because that’s why I was so interested in GW2. I’m disappointed we haven’t seen key features yet, but they’ve already said it’s definitely on the way in Q1.
As for single-round tournaments, I don’t expect them to have something like that until later this year (no earlier than Q3). However, I do agree that 40 minutes is too long of a time investment considering it’s our only option currently. Single round match-ups need to be a thing.
You’re on the precipice of losing your PVP community Jon.
This update best bring a change to sPVP, I’m sorry if I come across as harsh, but after 5 months of sterile PVP you can understand our indignation.
