Q:

Let’s just see if close games are at all common in this season. Not counting if you won or lost record how many of your last 10 matches were actually close where both teams had a reasonable chance of winning.

Over 450: 1
400 – 450: 1
300 – 400: 2
200 – 300: 2
100 – 200: 3

A:

The results out of 100 games posted:

A couple of responders had rather anomolous results compared to other posters but Cynz pointed out that duo queue over solo queue contributes to the games being less lopsided. Regardless the results are highly significant.

Over 450: 6
400 – 450: 14
300 – 400: 22
200 – 300: 25
100 – 200: 20
Less than 100: 12

So out of 100 games posted only 6 were between 450 and 500. Going by the highest losing scores only 3-4 were between 475-500. So 3-4% really close games.

Here is what i wrote in january regarding last season:

“Looking over my last 10 matches 3 were less than 25 point difference and 4 were greater than 200.”

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/pvp/Upcoming-Changes-for-PvP-League-Season-2/page/5#post5906459

Not one person posted results like this. 30% really close games compared to 3-4% this season. This season has 10 times worse matchmaking for close games.

Outcomes and Conclusions:

Some of you have goldfish memories and it’s so kitten transparent that you only like this season’s matchmaking because you are placed on the winning teams in mostly blowout games. Not because MM has improved in any way.

That said, I did have a match decided by a single point a week or two ago.

That said, “reasonable chance of winning” can be tricky to judge by final score alone. I mean, if you manage to hold home for an entire match then you end up with something like 200 points or more, but if the other team dominates the other two points it’s still a blow-out, no more likely to win than a 500-43 match-up.

I have lost 8 of 10 last matches. I am getting close to just giving up on pug ranked progression out of sapphire. I will try and form a group and see what happens, but I keep getting into teams that just have no ability to win. I am tired of getting people on my team that say “I just made this build/I am not used to this build/I just returned to the game” or those that are just like dumb dogs running back to its vomit and running to the same spot death after death and cannot do anything differently.

I also agree with the above post, I have also found myself in the situation when I get put with players who are running very out dated builds, trying something different than meta (and its usually complete trash), or just newish players who don’t actually understand the finer details of rotations and what they are good/bad against.

Highest losing score was 491, however i might add we won a game because time ran out (lol too many chronos, too many eles in match, bunker meta all over again) with 478-482 so this one probably was the closest.

Those games were with duoq. From my experience the more premades there are the closer games are. I will edit with soloq games, once i got any. Those tend to be more lopsided. Then again the higher i climbed up the closer games were.

I think it is a bit too small of a pool to compare, besides you should take division in account. The higher you climb the more balanced matches are.

For me 99% of matches to ruby were total faceroll. Ruby itself was pure luck for most part, either win 500-100 or lose 100-500. Diamond/legend is definitely more balanced.

Evan was expecting the matches to be less volatile by this stage in the season regardless of your division. So we’re not considering division. It’s also a random sample of 100 games which confirmed my hypothesis. And you agreed solo games are lopsided. Now you are saying ruby games are much more lopsided.

Wait what was your point again? Legend is ok so therefore matchmaking is fine. That’s a really biased viewpoint you have there.

You can’t make an objective study about any subject solely based on someone’s predictions. That’s a logical fallacy called “appeal to authority”.
Now, that’s a really biased viewpoint right there.

IMHO main issue is ruby, since that’s where all “bads” will eventually get to.. But there’s a difference between “i am making new totally awesome build you guy” or “i’mma rush lord at start” or “i’mma leave in the middle of teamfight because reasons”.. And making those distinctions is another story.

hahaha last 10 games? ill tell u that since i hit 2nd tier sappire over 2 weeks ago my win ratio is ~20% and those 2 weeks i played about 150 games. I had 2 wins in row like 4-6 times during that time. Lets say max 20% of those lost matches were “close” like 400+, alot of them were <200. No matter how bad player I am its impossible that with a proper matchmaking something like this would happen…

PS: previous season my winrate was about 55% (finished about 3rd tier ruby). I didnt give up yet cause if i wont reach ruby getting backpiece will get troublesome…

This is a great thread and I’d like to add my input. Sorry if it’s a text wall but I feel this post is more descriptive than any other that I’ve seen so far, concerning the problems that exist this season, specifically why Ruby and why it is such a problem for many players. It ultimately explains why matches are so lopsided:

The idea for match making this season actually works as intended if you begin play on day one of a season opening, keep playing about 10 matches a day and don’t skip any days of play. However, the idea for match making this season is broken and completely dysfunctional concerning players who begin play late in the season or who aren’t able to play often.

Let’s say you were Legendary division during season 1 or even Diamond. If you had logged in and played all day during the first day of season 2 and each day after, you would have been able to ride the rofl stomp match making wave while all of the other players of your MMR were still with you in the early divisions “this means the match making would be working as intended and will place you in stronger teams to quickly put you back where you should be”. But if you were unable to log in for the first two weeks of season 2 or only able to run a couple matches day, you will eventually find yourself stuck in the Ruby division with only Ruby level MMRs to que with, while the others of your actual MMR have transcended back to Diamond/Legendary. This means that you will be in contestation vs. these many possible situational problems that Ruby level MMRs make, that Legendary players do not, as you try to climb out of the Ruby hell: “the first division where you can lose tiers due to bad matches”

  • Rolling teams of: Warriors, DHs, Thieves, Mesmers vs. a better meta stack.
  • Players refusing to swap or plainly not knowing how to play more than one class.
  • Players insisting on playing that Warrior because they are working on achievements.
  • Players making detrimental errors in rotations that throw a match instantly.
  • Players that simply refuse to listen to any common sense what so ever.

These situational problems heavily decide match outcomes. No matter how good of a player you are or how hard you can carry, no one can carry a team of: Warrior, DH, Thief, Mesmer against: Rev, Rev, Tempest, Reaper or a team of players who refuse to listen to common sense /t chat calls.

The above Ruby hell situations are something that high MMR players who began play on day one, rarely had to experience if they experienced at all, as they rode the MMR wave with others of their high MMR. This means that they end up back in late Diamond/early Legendary, where players are much more reasonable and match outcomes end up being much more skill based than “situational factor based” because players who are good, that try hard, are willing to swap and generally play for wins before achievements/dailies.

The point being is: that a good player who began his run a bit late in season 2 is heavily punished with this current match making. He should eventually be able to climb back to his old positioning but it’s going to take a hell of a lot longer than if he would have been able to ride the MMR wave from day 1. A good player who began play on day 1 and kept up in progression with others of his actual MMR will not nearly as often be expected to carry a match of bad players as the good player who began play late, who is now stuck in Ruby hell. The good Ruby player will be expected to carry teams of intermediates almost each and every match, through their bad decisions in builds played and apathy towards communication, something that we all know is exceedingly difficult to do in GW2. Most of the time he won’t be able to do it and his match outcomes will not be decided by his ability to carry a team or the actual skill of his team mates in general, no his match outcomes will be like a gamble, majorly decided upon which team has the better comp. This will ultimately damage his MMR and keep good players in bad places.

Q: What is the problem here?
A: It is division pip progression as a reward grind, that in no way reflects actual MMR but still is used to place your match making. It allows low MMR players who play a lot, to eventually end up in Diamond division but higher MMR players who start late, who don’t play as often, to end up stuck down in Ruby.

This is why match making is so lopsided. We have strong players starting late who are in Sapphire still and bad players who decided to grind hard and make it to Diamond. Hope the devs read this because this is exactly what is happening.

Will also add my last 10 matches. These were all solo:

  • 453 – 500 victory
  • 631 – 408 victory
  • 129 – 500 desertion “internet had randomly gone down”

  • 501 – 176 defeat

You didn’t test predictions. You just assumed they were correct because they supported your model. Disregarding the leagues and personal progression through them (and other factors) throws a major wrench into any sort of calculations.

For example, in my case: I started playing on day one. Getting through amber was a PITA because all matches were very close and difficult (don’t get me wrong, each and every match was beautiful, but I didn’t want to have to take a shower after every tier or two in amber). I played dailes for next couple of days and then ran through amber and most of sapphire till I caught up with front end players. Then it was a slog of win/loss streaks (mostly due to newbie guildies I played with) till I got to ~ruby3. Then I took a couple of days break, after which I caught up to the better players again. Been playing dailies ever since, till today when I raced through last 4 tiers in diamond.

So, I hope you can see how in my particular case going straight by the numbers of wins/losses will drastically affect any results.

The majority of my games are 250 – 200 point differentials in diamond, as well as against mixed legendaries and diamonds. I haven’t really had any close matches and “fun” matches since earlier in the season when my friend and I duo’d into a few ESL teams and some of the twitch stars.

Games are no longer fun. Too many people have given up and are simply grinding out backpiece achievements ruining everyone’s experience. Hell I’ve had staff guardians spamming auto attacks, Necros running GS, and then Ostrich, Vallun, and so on in my other games. The last week and a half of matches literally make zero sense. Matches are generally extremes, and a balanced one is very rare; problems become worse with not enforcing class stacking, people not being experienced enough to swap for comps and rotate, lack of balance between classes, and so on.

In general it’s very sad to watch and or play PvP at the moment, and clearly everyone is complaining for one reason or another now.
