For all of you “pro” players upset you finally got the casuals you wanted in your tourneys but it turns out there not that good at tourney play. You should read the title.
Teach
Teach these new players you were so excited to have the ins and outs of the game. Some read the forums and before you post your next kitten thread post some advice on how to craft a good roamer or bunker. You have all been playing long enough now to probably to advise one player in one class on one build. Every little bit helps and it would also assist in creating more of a community.
Lose
Accept that other payers aren’t as good as you and accept the loss. You could always find a team of dedicated PvP players to run with but if that isn’t acceptable (and neither is option 1 see above) then accept each loss and hope by the luck of the draw you get a good team.
Quit
If you find option one to tedious and 2 too aggravating why not take a little or log term hiatus from S/T pvp. There is no reason to raise your stress level and risk your own health over a game. Especially if you no longer find it fun to play. go to park, fly a kite, watch a movie. Put the mountain Dew down and live your life. Join a boxing gym and engage in some real life PvP. Or go larp-ing a split the difference ( you can ere costumes wink). Either way if you find tourney play infuriating do something else. The game will be here its B2P. And you already bought it (how cool is that huh?).
Edit/Bonus:
Win
Like I said in lose you could always find a group of dedicated PvP players and thus win. But is that really winning? If every team you face is garbage and you roll all over them is that really competitive or just bullying? I find that Teaching in general might ruin your advantage but at the same time passing along knowledge through builds and strategy is a natural part of the game. Each new player that gets roll stomped is less likely to return to our little part of the world. However, if they started getting advice and getting better not only does that make for more fun PvP but it makes you a winner on all fronts.
Extra credit: I would love to see a group of experienced PvPers take a group of causals under their collective wing and mold them. Then like the many martial art flicks I have seen I would like to see them duel it out a Master protege battle. Yeah…yeah that would be cool :-)

Read lose. Seems you did do something I suggested haha. I always find it funny how no one ever reads. They write and write but never read a thing.
Well kitten.
0-1, good sir.
What r you on about?
If you read you might figure it out. Let me give you a hint see above.
dodge stuff it always work and if you think some class is OP it’s not you are just a kittenty player and you need to dodge more
100%wr against nothing
op
I don’t understand what that has to do with what I posted but…..ok?
I try to take cute newbies under my wing once in a while..
It’s kinda hard when they don’t actually want to improve and just want to play troll builds in solo que and tripple cap single points.
good post.
Just be careful who you help! Some people act nice when they ask for advice, and then make things up/turn on you later! lol.

I wish they would want to learn also but I see it like this. They signed up for tourney so obviously they want to test their skills. If they get their kitten handed to them they might be more willing to take some tips. Overall making the new players better only strengthens the community. We want them coming back and enjoying good fights even if they lose.

To be honest, he answered no… did you understand that? Or did you read sentence from your quote (really lazy if you didnt)?
What’s the matter of introducing ppl into PvP, when they see they can’t farm gold. They will just join back into PvE where they have a chance to win a fight. If you’re not amitious about PvP then it’s a non-sense to try keep them in PvP. It’s something different if smn PM about traits or builds. Then I help for sure. And as Helseth said, playing with your own team is much more fun.

Edit: Ahh perhaps you should read my post instead of commenting on a conversation that saw its natural conclusion that you were in no way part. Of course you have right to post but such trivial matters when they do not concern you seems a little petty. Considering i posted on a rather improvident topic (to me at least) and such nonsense undermines the thread. If you would like to discuss what we could do as a community to improve s/tpvp I would love that but if not our conversation ends here. Reply if you like but I rather not discuss something so small any further.

We are not all the same. Fun is a very subjective thing. But in our current situation you expect a lot of pvp’ers that are not there and you refuse to contribute to recruit/mold new ones. Well … you have made your bed, and now you have to lie in it, I suppose?

Actually A-Net made my bed and it feels like a stone-bed full of nails.
To your point about the current situation and my refuse to recruit. The problem is in the structure of PvP. You enter the first time PvP. What are you going to do? 99% of all ppl try out hotjoin. So all the new pvp-ers have allrdy a wrong overview about PvP. Hotjoin doesn’t bring PvP forward to build up a team or a guild to play together.
I mean if you have fun it’s good. But if you solo q or hotjoin, this won’t get PvP any further, even if you have more ppl in it. They are all alone. And that means less competition, less organisation. And competition is essential in PvP.
According to any pvp game i play.
If i win i need to get a life and or get banned for apperently hacking.
If i lose i need to learn to play the game and or gtfo “their game”
Relatable pvp post.
Normally, prominent pvp players make exhaustive guides on their proffessions of choice, or general tactics by which the main pvp mode abides, and it is an occurence perfectly normal and natural for a thriving pvp game (see GW for reference). While I know there are some character guides floating around, I don’t recall ever seeing/reading any generic and in-depth guides on how to play tournament pvp (i.e. map-specific, objective-based and character-task based in-depth descriptions for high-end tournament mode. Perhaps the cream de la creme of the pvp playerbase simply realised at last that the pvp just isn’t getting anywhere, or that it’s getting somewhere at a speed far too slow).
Having said that, all that is very understandable because:
1) There is no real gain from pvp/incentive to pvp/point in pvping – even boasting rights are pretty much limited to pvp (well, what’s left of it). See GW for reference (chance of obtaining rare items, zkeys, zboxes, sigils, bfaction, you name it) – in addition to titles and bragging rights, you could also earn money, the amount of which varied according to how successful you were, or how precise your winner prediction was. It does holds true some of those things weren’t part of the game on release, but why were they ignored for GW2 is beyond me (rushed release might be a factor, I suppose).
2) Too many unappealing mechanics for newcomers, and veterans (stealth and the associated insta gibbing and culling, pets, aoe favoured by the main map objective, certain professions favoured by certain maps)
3) Lack of basic pvp infrastructure (everything from an observer mode to ratings, ladder and proper match making)
4) The most easily accessible game mode is an excuse of a pvp mode (aka fail-join)
5) Inconcise skill descriptions, and inconsistencies when it comes to pve-pvp split between skills (why is it only limited to a few proffessions?). Also, discrepancies between pve/pvp skill/equipment descriptions.
6) Animations from certain proffessions overwhelm new, and sometimes even experienced players (e.g. clusterfks of pets and large aoe animations). I remember well one of the arguments for this game was also that it allows players to be able to recognise what skill is being used simply by watching the field (supposedly because of “clear” and “distinctive” animations). Sadly, animations are often not indicative enough (and let’s not start with the issues connected to asuran characters), and they are virtually impossible to make out in large fight scenarios involving a plenthora of pets and/or aoe animations from multiple proffessions. I am certain skill bars would be the better call to make, and so would toning down the animations
7) Conquest is a good pvp mode (though I find it way more entertaining in GW than here), but not as the sole option. And newcomers are notorious for ignoring map objectives, be it because they aren’t familiar with them, or just don’t care, thus creating a genuine need for more straightforward pvp modes/objectives.
8) Subjective or not, it’s just no fun. And I mean the game as a whole.
It can be amusing at best, but not quite fun, or at least not for avery long amount of time. Given the fact that the grand majority of GW pvpers feels that way I dare say it is not simply a matter of subjectivity.
Bring back the midline, backline and frontline concept, please. Actually, just re-release GW as GW3 with identical mechanics, but improved map objectives and graphics. Yea, that would be best. /sigh
Having said all that, I already quit, so heh.

With all due respect, kindness etc. Saying ANet made the bed for you is completely denying you to have any chance to improve your current situation. On many levels I disagree with that.
Nope .. hotjoins are not constructive in my opinion either. But does it occur to you, that some ppl can see pass that? And that many people can be changed … even if it require some work on your own? If you don’t want to do that to accomplish something for yourself it is really your loss. But expecting it to be there, without putting anything in on your own is a spoiled attitude, that denies taking responsibility. But that is ok .. it is your choice.

A-Net released GW2 just too early. And now they struggling with implementing the essential stuff karla listed above. I think with leaderboards, daily/monthly tourmanets, another mode, no hotjoin and a better-rewarding system etc. etc. etc., they would be quite successfull. If this would be implemented allrdy at the release date, they could hold a big part of the old-pvp community from GW1.

I post a lot in the forums and do suggestions to improve the quality for pvp. I can’t do really more. And as I see you never were really in the competitive scene here, so it’s hard for you to understand my arguments.
@TheGuy
You are PvPer no doubt about that. Yet you cant expect other people to think same as you do. Even tho most real PvPers get what you wrote I think. There are still people who want only to win, who rage when they lose, who think they are OP, people who think theirs team is garbage because it can’t be them why they lost etc. I’m glad to see someone with this approach towards PvP but we are only humans, therefore there is many, MANY “kittens” around here.
And my advice about these “kittens” is make them rage, make them lose, its fun. Because really, there is no better satisfaction in PvP than beating some egoistic nutjob who thinks he is the best of all. And todays society makes a lot of em.
What’s the matter of introducing ppl into PvP, when they see they can’t farm gold. They will just join back into PvE where they have a chance to win a fight. Hmm … strange way to argue by patronizing ppl. Yes, I am sorry I am offended by that last comment, since I have done plenty of high-lvl pvp over they years. I deal with changes irl (as in changing ppls mentality), and used to be (and might actually still be .. future will tell) a coach on a very high level on the side. So I might argue, that you have no real idea about how to change people and how establish a community of elite players as I have, and therefore you opinion is void. But that is not really constructive, is it?
But the thing is, I am completely aware, that we have limited resources (same reason for me to not engage in serious pvp for me .. it is too much trouble). That is not the same as not realizing what could be done. I see those ideas OP came up with as being really good … I just don’t have the time to begin with between a new job and a personal life being … “a mess” in lack of more suitable words for the limited space.
If you don’t want to do it, it is fine … really. But call it what it is; it is legitimate, to not want to be altruistic when you relax.
PS: You might want to consider, where your efforts have the most impact. If you really like to contribute, then my bet would be, that starting a ripple might have a bigger impact over time, than posting things on the forum. Just a thought.
The Op has a good point, if only there was some better tools or ways to help new players learn how to really play. instead of the clustermuffin that is hotjoin.

Just read few more times (did you read your own post) and you gona start to understand soon enough… Just read, it can help you. Maybe you’ll realize soon.
FYI, ppl play game to have fun (not to teach noobs), ppl also dont like to lose just because bad designed MM can put you in their team (where you can ruin good team)…
Its not, Play/Win/Lose… GW2 PvP died, noone playing anymore… You can teach/win/ lose/or accept this i dont care, i stoped playing long time ago (when I realized that developers are not interested in PvP).
P.S. I guess you r developer or you r paid by devs.
No thx, I’ll play with my team and have a 100% winratio
Among the blind, the one-eyed is king, it seems.
It’s unfortunate that people rather be snide or jerks before actually helping. I would’ve loved for a more experienced player to show me the ropes when I first started pvp. A lot of people are intimidated from joining sPvP not because of the fact that there’s little reward, but because other MMOs and competitive environments have unnerved them from making the attempt. No new player wants to join an environment so a bunch of more experienced people can harp on how bad they are or, if they’re good, cry about how OP their class is.
sPvP (structured. including tournaments) is the most abrasive GW2 environment right now, and a massive amount of players don’t even think to take to the forums for information.
… that being said, any expert Elementalists or Mesmers in the mind of training lower ranks (29 currently) I’d gladly send a /w for some knowledge
The main problem is a lot of these people don’t want to learn or seem incapable of learning even the basics let alone the finer points. Its not even a skill issue its more of a commons sense issue. I expect to lose a lot when I solo queue what I do not expect is people not knowing how to finish off downed players ( I mean the actual mechanic of stomping they stand there and dps randomly even when there is no one else around), people attacking 3 points at a time, and multiple people capping empty points to kitten points because of A-nets crappy scoring system. Those three are rampant in your average solo que game. Even when corrected in a non hostile tone during the matches people often continue to do the same things over and over again. It takes a modicum of effort to learn the basics and believe it or not that is too much for a lot of people.
But the real question is…who taught us how to play in tpvp since many of us started playing tourneys at launch? Right…noone…you just try and get facerolled, then try again, and again and again…nobody, expec in game’s pvp, can pretend to start and win…you can make your own team and learn from your mistakes like everyone here did and still does…sure if someone asks i can help, but you actually have to learn things “on the field” …theory is not enough, at all…and you can’t wait for someone to just teach you and then go in and own ppl, it doesn’t work like that…believe me..even if you know the right way to go because someone told you, more experienced players are still going to faceroll you..
(edited by Archaon.6245)
I choose quit. PvP is way too boring, easy and pointless. That is not much different than the rest of the game, but in PvE you can at least work for shiny weapons and points!
Your words have alot of truth. Good Job.
Reminds me of a sellout I used to know. Poor chap got all caught up in being too cool for school. Had to diss all of his friends to hang out with 15 year olds and listen to them enlighten him on things like crayons and diapers. Poor poor chap.
Oh well.. the good news is, he will one day be rewarded with the title “greatest engineer to play a flopped pvp game”. No one really cares though, because this isn’t an e-sport or anything. But hey, at least he’s got a cool 15 year old hangout.
Sellouts…. so pathetic. -,o
Prior to last week, I hadn’t queued for tournies at all.
I mostly stuck to hotjoin, and since I’m not PvE lvl-capped, i’ve stayed away from WvW a lot as well.
This was mostly due to my lack of a functioning mouse — PvPing with a touchpad is garbage — but I had been doing it for a few weeks.
Interestingly, it taught me a lot about PvP that I wouldn’t have learned if I was zipping around with lightning-quick movements (and thus, viable in 1v1).
For example: How to win a game without killing anything.
Knowing that if I engaged 1 or more opponents who would actually target me (for example, if i wasn’t with the group, as im usually not) I would die almost instantly and therefor be a detriment to my team, I found ways to try and offset that handicap.
What I discovered:
+Kiting more than one person.
Easier said than done, for sure, especially with no mouse. However, if you are successful and can keep more bodies busy than it takes to keep them, you’re giving your team a real advantage numerically
+Downing without stomping.
In group settings, sometimes stomping the enemy is less beneficial unless they’re sitting on the node you’re taking. Simply prevent them from being revived (interrupts include Stun, Daze, Knockback, Knockdown) and keep their hp ~50%. Not that much fun for my enemies, true, but hey, neither was being Heartseekered 100-0 by baddie thieves while I ran endlessly into a wall when my first mouse started crapping out and I didn’t have keyboard turn bound.
kitten? No way!
+Manage your mobility to get you around as needed.
This is a big thing, and I don’t think a lot of people have realised how flexible their mobility skills can be. Now, this is not to say for every class, but classes with targetted teleports (I can think of Mesmers and Ele’s, outside of thieves) should roll thieves and play with IA until they know the ins and outs.
+Being proactive about bases
Crucial to winning, being smart about base management is, essentially, the best way to ensure a win. For example, if you have 3 teammates defending a node, and there’s no one trying to take it from you, all 3 of those players are wasting their time until an attack comes. AT LEAST 2 should head to somewhere else — perhaps help defend the base the opposition WILL be assaulting at that time, or perhaps assaulting the node the opposition had left dry. If you’re glass and solo-defending a node with more enemy bodies than you’ve got on their way in, running can be your best option. Firstly, it prevents you from dying (and therefor you don’t miss the ~20 seconds you spend getting back into the fight) and can sometimes cause them to chase you, potentially slowing the rate that they cap your node. — Also, try and guess where they where coming from, and go take that base.
+Try to fight on / very near nodes unless you’re kiting.
This makes it more of a bonus for a teammate to come support you, because you aren’t in the middle of no-where with no guaranteed points rolling in. It also means the kill was, theoretically, worth more.
But, I bought a mouse (corsair m95, and boy is it delicious) and can say comfortably that if I’m sober and not falling asleep in my chair, I can pump out good win/loss in quick tournies regardless of my team (the sobriety part is the biggest inhibitor, mind you).
However, when I DO get a team that just doesn’t know WTF they are doing, and I try to explain to them how to provide more for their team, I tend to get trolled / insulted / boycotted by a fluctuating percentage of my teammates, resulting in a loss.

You had the common sense to be able to jump into matches and learn to swim. A lot of this stuff can be explained but it really can’t be taught just by others telling you have to take some lumps while figuring it our on your own during matches. There are things people have to kind of learn on there own through experience and practice. Somebody telling you and you learning through trial and error and paying attention to what works during matches are totally different things. The latter one is 100% more valuable imo.
It takes a modicum of effort to learn the basics and believe it or not that is too much for a lot of people.
alot of this is bad habits picked up from hotjoin, thats why hotjoins are such kitten. they literally dont teach ppl how to play the game. LIke, 3 ppl standing on an empty point to cap it.
No thx, I’ll play with my team and have a 99% winratio
Read lose. Seems you did do something I suggested haha. I always find it funny how no one ever reads. They write and write but never read a thing.
To be honest, he answered no… did you understand that? Or did you read sentence from your quote (really lazy if you didnt)?
…….I never asked a question so your point was………….
Since you did discuss PvP I will keep my word and respond. I don’t understand what you mean by, “Maybe you’ll realize soon.” Realize what? Like I said before be more specific with your points. this isn’t contest and I don’t like daily riddles.
While I agree the s/tPvP numbers are down we are realize that tournament play is up. this could be a good thing, and allow our community to grow larger.
Many players do not like to teach “noobs” however, many do. If we examine the numerous build sites, guides, and build sharing post that goes on here alone its obvious that many people love to share their exploits, adventures, and successes with others. Many come seeking advice, and if you look at any class forum you will see its chalk full of helpful tips, and people who genuinely want to help by sharing knowledge. I acknowledge that some people (it would seem such as yourself) find this task tedious and foolish. While your’e entitled to your opinion it would be short sighted to assume the whole community takes this view.
Considering you are not an active part of the s/tPvP community as you stated here “You can teach/win/ lose/or accept this i dont care, i stoped playing long time ago” then I fail to understand why you voice your disdain in this forums. You clearly said you don’t care anymore but you seem to be putting a great deal of effort into taking actions that indicate the opposite. Perhaps you would like to talk about your PvP woes in which case its better to be honest with yourself and express how much you care about PvP. I find these forums are an excellent place to share such concerns.
I am not a developer (btw is being called a developer some type of insult or perhaps a complement considering they made the game?). It seems you are projecting your feelings toward the development team on me. Though if they would like to pay me I will gladly accept the money. If the development team would like to give me money I know of several acceptable payment methods.
Edit:
Anyone else remember the days of going to http://pvx.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page just to see the new ideas folks came up with. I miss that meta.
