Stop using the excuse of ‘new players are overwhelmed’.

They aren’t.

You’re adding another tier of grind to sPvP that it just doesn’t need. The best part about this game was its basis of equal footing for every player, new and old.

Please, for the love of god – scrap the skill / stat / rune / sigil unlock idea and keep it to skins and cosmetics.

All is vain.

Great response so far, seems quite overwhelmingly in the favour of not having these kinds of unlocks. Wonder if a dev will chime in? Hopefully they’ll re-think this like ranks.

Agreed, 100%. I don’t even play the game that much anymore, and this, on principle alone, makes me want to just not come back at all.

Unlocks in sPvP are single handedly the dumbest ideas ever implemented.

I cannot possibly fathom why you think “overwhelming” is why some people don’t play sPvP. They don’t play it because they think the PvP in this game isn’t very good. The way to fix this is not to make people grind for things in the game mode you told us we wouldn’t have to grind in.

SC2 and DOTA 2 don’t have any of this nonsense and plenty of noobs play them.

LOL has me grind for heroes and I don’t play it – for precisely this reason.

I tune in hoping for good changes just to hear this and turn off the stream.

The only part to me that was overwhelming about the runes, sigils and amulets were the fact that most of them were useless – they seem to realize this and hopefully it’ll get better but we will have to see.

The absolute last bastion of interest in this game for me revolves around the equal footing from the get-go. I can quit when it sucks, and come back when it’s fixed, and all I’ll lag behind with is skill. Please, for the love of whatever you find holy, do not insert a grind into this game.

Having to unlock things in pvp is awfull.

When the new heals came out, I rly would have liked to test them, especially, you usually not only want to know your own skills, but alos the skills of your enemies / other classes.
But If you want to test them, you have to buy them.
In the past, if you had problems with fighting certain classes / specs, you simply created on of those and played it, in order to know how it works.

Let’s say, the new OP build will be A.E.D-engi. (just an random example)
I cant simply create one, I also have to spend 25 Skillpoints on a profession, might not even play very much. So whats the use of this unlock-sh*d?

It’s fairly obvious people are overwhelmed by PvP because of how complex combat is and the steep learning curve involved. It’s not amulets that are overwhelming players.

QFT. This is what it should be, and it will be a low-cost. It would also be good to approach more-complicated armor in a similar way. Like every starts with just 2-3 options for 3 armor pieces, and you can unlock more after just a couple games.

Yes lets just remake GW1 /s. Nobody said the unlock system in GW1 was superior, in fact I see it as a hindrance.

One of this games best selling points in my opinion is that the day you buy the game, you can waltz into the mists and start competing with other players immediately because you have all the same skills, gear and stats.

GW2 removing the need for unlocking skills and grinding out PvP gear was a complete innovation and now they’re undoing that.

If they’re smart they’ll see the universal unlocks as one of their strongest points of sale and think twice about continuing in this direction. I know myself, besides the pay wall Wildstar has – I couldn’t go to another MMO where my access to skills / gear which dictates performance is tied to how much grinding I do.

Their internal statistics will show people want progression though. That is why they probably added ascended gear – because people didnt have anything to work towards.

Same with pvp. They are adding a treadmill to keep people playing – to give the mmo players progression. The treadmill they have chosen is clearly unlocking things with skill points – like runes/amulets and new skills.

Yes it sucks, but that is life. It is pretty lame. At least matchmaking should prevent it somewhat.

Any kind of unlocking, even if it’s 1 copper for rune set, is too much and very bad direction for the game to take.

The beauty of this game is the level playing field. The second you change that philosophy, you will start losing players.
Most of the new players buy GW2 because they have heard from their friends etc. that there is no gear treadmill and you can start playing almost instantly knowing that only thing holding you back is skill(and balance ofc.).

And us who have played from the start for sure got interested in the PvP aspect because of this.

Stop talking about that blablabla is confusing new players. What confuses new players is a veteran player with all unlocks kicking their kitten and they don’t know why it’s happening. I for one play this game pretty much only for 2 things: No monthly fee and no gear grind in PvP. You will lose a lot of players, new and old, if this change goes live.

well i have 500+ skill points on my warrior but i prefer to save them for PvE WvW stuffs though and not sPvP.

because glory as PvP currency will be removed in the future, i think the only thing left to use for unlocks is skill points or silvers.

That’s an extremely narrow minded response. The main thing that people expect in PvP is BALANCE. Balanced classes equate to a fair game. If one has to grind to be at the same potential as another player, that is the definition of unfair (one person has something that another does not have).

beside the fact, that unlocking in pvp is a bad idea and it is against everything gw2 pvp stands for, its also a problem for pvpler without templates. the constant switching between chars because of the lack of templates makes this unlocking thing even worse. And dont forget that pvp people with only 5 charslots are also deleting their chars very often!

I play spvp because i dont have to grind, i dont care for my rank going up it just happens along the way and thats fine, because you dont require rank for anything else than cosmetics so I can shoose to play the spvp mode in my own pace.

And now they are adding a grind requirement?

Please Anet just give them to us without any unlocks like it is supposed to be, we dont want unlockables aside from cosmetics. We want to play new builds without having to grind for it. Skillpoints for spvp unlocks was allready bad enough and now this`??

I’ve been saying this since they first introduced unlocking skills, and I’ll say it again:

Unlocking skills, traits, or equipment of any kind, no matter the cost, goes against everything Guild Wars 2 PvP stands for and directly undermines the premise of PvP in this game as advertised since before the game even launched, bringing many PvP-oriented players to the game.

The new heals have been out for a while now, and I am yet to unlock a single one of them. The reason (besides Skelk Venom being hilariously bad)? Despite playing almost every day, I still can’t afford to unlock just one skill while I also grind for armour sets.

If Arena Net continues on this dangerous path of creating imbalance and destroying the even playing field of PvP, I, and many others, will be quitting, and the already small tPvP scene that we have will get even smaller.

Please, Arena Net, don’t continue down this path, keep the even playing field of PvP and don’t go against everything that you have stood for. I’ve heard claims that a good portion of the Arena Net staff consider themselves hardcore PvP players; if this is true, then prove it by making the right decision.

If you think new players are overwhelmed with the amount of possible runes, amulets etc here are some suggestions:

  • The first tab of the ‘armor vendor’ should be renamed to ‘most common runes’ including the limited amount of runes you suggest for new player.
  • In the past we have talked a lot about saving your build and equipment setup. With the option to import a full setup from a recommended npcs or a different player you can easily get yourself started without getting overwhelmed.

I am not really sure about your reasoning for the whole unlock-able idea. I get it, that you want to bind people longer to the spvp and give them something to do, but at the same time those unlocks should be fast to get, which is a contradiction in its self.

Everything you can unlock through playing the game should only affect your appearance, the WvW or PvE, but never, never your basic ability to play spvp in an effective way.

Adding the requirement to unlock specific build options in spvp will also increase the distance between SPvP and the rest of the game even further.

It’ll be fine, jesus what a bunch of crybabies. As long as you can unlock a new thing after a game or two it’ll give the pvp game a small feeling of progression. PvP veterans will (should anyway, idk how unlocks work) have them all quickly and barely notice it, whereas new players will have an incentive to play a few more games to try out a locked skill that looks interesting. It is a net gain for the game and should increase new player retention.

Put a cost into transforming free PvP gear + runeset > into PvE (converting them , like the gem store items)
But in the other case , when ladders will be working 100% and new ppl are forced to fight each other , while ONLY soldier amulets (something like LoL where ppl are using as starter characters Annie or Ryze ) , it <<might>> work , but i prefer it unlocking with <<matches played or won>>

Edit: We can implant a <<Rent>> idea . For example personaly Ifor using the 60 shark Pants i will a) eaither have to get 60 Rank, or <<b) Pay some silver per 15 days

If this is going to happen, it needs to be handled very carefully. Cosmetic gear and unlocks cannot be in the same progression, like needing to choose between opening new rank boxes and getting skillpoints as it is now.

I don’t quite mind it, so long as it isn’t hard to unlock new things. For example, with the current system, if a new stat amulet cost 100 glory, that might be fine.

They also need to be account wide unlocks because I want to be able to reroll to change my character’s appearance without needing to spend a hundred gajillion dollars on makeover kits.

Please please please STOP adding speedbumps, and go back and revert the unlocking even of the existing heals for sPVP. Being able to create a max level sPVP characters with all gear and skills is one of the best parts about Guildwars2. Don’t ruin that.
