Anyone who plays PvP in this consistently already knows this deep down inside. The proof is right in front of us. It has been over 3 years since release and every attempt by the developers to reconcile and balance this game takes it further and further down the path of garbage. Esports? This game pulls 3k viewers at best during the official events. I would suggest anyone who reads this and feels the same way to abandon this piece of kitten.

I just find it unfathomable that the same company that made this AMAZING combat system (basically the best action combat out of all MMOs, by far) and really innovative class concepts (ele is a rather avatar-y take on the typical mage, mesmer is really unique, guardian a unique take on the paladin archetype, etc.) fails so hilariously again and again at providing BASIC pvp needs like multiple builds per class, reasonable balancing (5 class changes per quarter year is unacceptable) or even just a basic league system.

Not to mention solo queue or even just the basic mechanic of actually being allowed to play the game while waiting for a tournament queue pop, instead of having to idle in some god forsaken place.

Forcing your game to be an esport on release is a terrible decision 99% of the time. It doesn’t work. Forcing your MMO to be an esport on release is even worse because PvP is basically a game within a game and it’s way more obscure.

Now you know what’s even more stupid? Forcing your MMO with absolutely no infrastructure to support a competitive community to be an esport on release. Now that’s kittening stupid.

In my opinion, until the following is done… the whole Esports thing is just a pipe dream.

1) 100% Separation of PvE from PvP when it comes to Skills and Traits.
2) A better match making system. 1+1+1+1+1 v 5 or 2+3 isn’t cutting it.

Number 1 is probably the most vital of the two… the whole meta is based on what is going on within PvE. The whole Bunker Meta and CC craze came with each class obtaining traits and skill to be of use within Raids.

If the next wing requires a ton of Condi and condition traits and skills get a ton of love, guess what the next meta in PvP is going to revolve around? that’s right conditions! Until anet separates the two game modes 100% you can expect PvP to follow what ever is meta within PvE. In this case, what ever is needed for Raids.

I heavily disagree, you can balance the game with all modes in mind. Too bad ArenaNet is absolutely awful at balancing and their decisions are laughable. Just look at the latest ‘balance’, what PvEer would ever bring any boon removal or boon corruption? It was a buff purely for PvP. It just shows how hopeless PvP future will forever be.

Also, Raids is a giant DPS check. It’s clear the developers don’t play many games as they have no clue how to design difficulty.

First priority is removing the power creep, there is absolutely no reason for so many powerful skills having stupidly low cooldowns.

Good matchmaking requires a large player pool. The current direction of pvp (power-creep out the wazoo) causes a smaller player pool.

At this point, the missed the train for a 2nd time. They lost tons of pvp-ers after launch (first try). After going F2P and announcing HoT, population spiked, but they crapped the bed again, and the player-base is bleeding once again.

Oh well…it is their pocket-book if people stop playing the game. There are tons of talented game developers pushing out great sources of entertainment. No reason to languish waiting for a group that repeatedly fails.

Well you can try balancing around all modes but then you get things like rev hammer 2 which is super strong in WvW, mediocre in PvE and somewhat average in PvP. That’s just one example.

With split balancing there would be so much more variation and balance would be a bit more easily attained because they can adjust something without considering every other game mode.

It is kind of a shame to, they had pretty awesome setup with tournaments when it first came out. Not sure why they turned the corner on that. Also I know they read the forums, did they just ignore people’s response to the preview balance notes?

the people who made the game understood that builds had to give up something to make the game skill based with counterplay. When they merged all the traits they just let everyone have everything. The result is a game based on spam and rotations basically. It took all the skill out of it, and that was a while ago now. I basically quit a few days after that patch. It was so stupid. Such a huge power creep.

Would an fps be fun if everyone carried round nukes and everyone also had made body armour? Nope. It would be balanced, sure. But its not good design. Look at gw2 now. Everyone has perms boons. Perma condis. Perma condi clear. Perma 6k attacks. Perma healing. There are traits which are a whole build in one trait. There was a reason alot of these traits were spread out before. If you wanted to run signets there were a few traits to take. Meditations on guardian meant a few traits. That meant builds were more focussed on a role and had weaknesses which could be exploited with skilled play.

Look at some of the traits now. They are insane . They are about 4 traits combined. This is madness. That is why the game is dead. People play pvp for pve rewards. That is all.

There are about 20 dudes probably not talented enough to suceed at real esports games who will exploit the fact anet is giving away a bit of money for their dead game. There is no skill i this game. Its all based on comp, has been for 18 montns. And on spamking rotations on a point.

Its dead. The trait merge patch ensured of that. Power creep killed it

Well said. Think it’s blatantly obvious that the structured pvp mode is not gaining anymore population, but bleeding players due to the terrible decisions on balancing, forcing a fake Esport scene on players for marketing purposes ect.

There are less than 100 players on a global scale China/Europe/North America that even participate in Guild Wars 2 “esport” scene, which is why you see the same 2 teams even being paid decent money for winning, they are pretty much being paid to market the game, hardly any competition at all, how can you call this a Esport?

It’s a joke, Arena Net can throw all the money in the world at their prize pool, it won’t encourage people to participate with how things are ran.

They really need to rethink how they are going about things in pvp, such as fine tuning new content they released like stronghold, learning to make small balance tweaks that make sense for pvp and pve raiding, ect.

That’s why you shouldn’t play MMOs. They suck your life away and at the very core their pvp tends to be an unbalanced mess of skill-less although fun combat, that can never be esports.

I went back to play smash 4, a fighting game that’s all about mindgames, and outsmarting your opponent and having superior technical skill. One of the best things for me is that I no longer feel encumbered by kittenty teammates. It’s a game where I have all the power myself and it feels great knowing that you’re accountable for the outcome of the match, win or lose. I guess BnS is more 1v1 oriented, but at its core it looks like it lacks depth to support a decent tournament scene.

Its funny you say this because in beta i poked at 2 classes all of a sudden having all the boons and people told me to L2P.

Now everyone says the game has no skill but i would have to say this game is far more spammy.

As a Dps warrior you had to choose between balance stance and frenzy. Small stuff like more dps,condi cleanse, stability, team heals changing the dynamics of a match but it all went away with the HOT release.

Druids with the ability to heal all condi and AOE heal, scrappers with there AOE stun double mini escape and perma every boon, and this went for every class but warrior and thief.

It really is sad to me that right before HOT they nerfed d/d ele and if they only nerfed a few other things and buffed some other stuff classes would of had multiple choices for PvP comps and builds.

Isp, latency speeds, etc in a country has nothing to do with whether or not a gaming company will make a successful product. This is not the issue for U.S or S. Korea, so a biy irrelevant to the topic.

B&S actually reminds me of GW2 in that, there really is a big skill cap on professions and instead of dodge rolls, you have a 1.5s parry/counters/blocks. Only issue i have is, it’s not very immersive for me. Not sure if it’s the graphics or what but, hard for me to get into it.

Only reason why I keep trying to play is so I can reach lvl 15 to do 1v1 and 3v3 pvp. Still cant get a definitive answer whether the pvp is better than gw2 /:

A few questions about this and was wondering if you knew.

Why are they balancing around a PvE dungeon? It seems odd when you have Esports and WvW to be focused on such a small group of people to have the right stuff. Even if you based balance around PvP you could change the bosses in raids to match the correct difficulty levels.

My 2nd question is do they talk about build diversity? Like spirit rangers could be great for 1 vs 1 but poor in team fights and power rangers should be good in team fights but poor at 1 vs 1?

Im just really curious, since the HOT release i have felt there is less builds to play and less ways to have a effect on a match. Obviously you might have no knowledge of the insights of the balancing game but im interested if you know anything and if you could share.

Haha blade & soul is kitten. Uninstalled already. People whine about passives in this game, but blade and soul combat is all about passives. Enemy doesn’t even block and still your skills get blocked because he have some kitten block kitten on. You can’t play games like that seriously.

Yeah that’s pretty much how old school mmo’s worked.. You have block/evade/resistance etc as a stat you can build toward(gear).

Been playing BnS last few days, actually quite fun. More fun then gw2 right now, should carry me till BDO..

Sadly gw2 just isn’t fun anymore.

I just find it unfathomable that the same company that made this AMAZING combat system (basically the best action combat out of all MMOs, by far) and really innovative class concepts (ele is a rather avatar-y take on the typical mage, mesmer is really unique, guardian a unique take on the paladin archetype, etc.) fails so hilariously again and again at providing BASIC pvp needs like multiple builds per class, reasonable balancing (5 class changes per quarter year is unacceptable) or even just a basic league system.

Not to mention solo queue or even just the basic mechanic of actually being allowed to play the game while waiting for a tournament queue pop, instead of having to idle in some god forsaken place.

Yup, it is unthinkable. I just wonder if the devs are aware of this, is this a result of upper management or is it really the devs themselves not able to see this?

the people who made the game understood that builds had to give up something to make the game skill based with counterplay. When they merged all the traits they just let everyone have everything. The result is a game based on spam and rotations basically. It took all the skill out of it, and that was a while ago now. I basically quit a few days after that patch. It was so stupid. Such a huge power creep.

Would an fps be fun if everyone carried round nukes and everyone also had made body armour? Nope. It would be balanced, sure. But its not good design. Look at gw2 now. Everyone has perms boons. Perma condis. Perma condi clear. Perma 6k attacks. Perma healing. There are traits which are a whole build in one trait. There was a reason alot of these traits were spread out before. If you wanted to run signets there were a few traits to take. Meditations on guardian meant a few traits. That meant builds were more focussed on a role and had weaknesses which could be exploited with skilled play.

Look at some of the traits now. They are insane . They are about 4 traits combined. This is madness. That is why the game is dead. People play pvp for pve rewards. That is all.

There are about 20 dudes probably not talented enough to suceed at real esports games who will exploit the fact anet is giving away a bit of money for their dead game. There is no skill i this game. Its all based on comp, has been for 18 montns. And on spamking rotations on a point.

Its dead. The trait merge patch ensured of that. Power creep killed it

Well you can try balancing around all modes but then you get things like rev hammer 2 which is super strong in WvW, mediocre in PvE and somewhat average in PvP. That’s just one example.

With split balancing there would be so much more variation and balance would be a bit more easily attained because they can adjust something without considering every other game mode.

All that does is mask the real issue with this and numerous other pvp systems…PvP, in all forms, should be balanced around 1v1 combat. Every class should have the ability to beat any other class depending on player skill/decision making. Every action in PvP boils down to math…get the math right and you get the game right.

Rock/Paper/Scissors, class and build counters, etc are all cop-outs for failure to adequately design a solid PvP system. I understand why they do it, developing a system where every class is viable in 1v1 is harder than just telling people to bring a friend to help kill that guy. Anyway, rant over..

1) 100% Separation of PvE from PvP when it comes to Skills and Traits.

I heavily disagree, you can balance the game with all modes in mind. Too bad ArenaNet is absolutely awful at balancing and their decisions are laughable. Just look at the latest ‘balance’, what PvEer would ever bring any boon removal or boon corruption? It was a buff purely for PvP. It just shows how hopeless PvP future will forever be.

Also, Raids is a giant DPS check. It’s clear the developers don’t play many games as they have no clue how to design difficulty.

First priority is removing the power creep, there is absolutely no reason for so many powerful skills having stupidly low cooldowns.

I have to strongly disagree as the game in its current state is a great example versus its predecessor Guild Wars.

Separating PvP from PvE alone would make a huge difference in both game modes. For the PvE scene this will allow “trash” classes to get the attention they need without fears of it becoming way OP in PvP. For PvP, this will allow for Nerfs without trashing the class in PvE or buffing a class in PvP without fears of making the PvE content 100% solo-able in record time fashion.

You really can’t sit there and say with a straight face that Druid was added to the game for PvP purposes…..or for open world PvE lol…. Before the last patch it was barely viable in PvE as you barely got a tag on anything.

My point being, what ever the new big shiny in PvE is, is a direct effect on PvP due to the lack of separation between the two game modes.

E.G.

Raids: Classes received more survivability and CC’s
PvP: Tank Metta and people complaining about too many CCs

then again i guess you could go with the other logic of:
“Anet made the game around pvp” so…..

PvP: Classes received more survivability and CC’s
Anet: Now that pvp has survivability and CC’s lets add Raids!

I like to think it’s the first scenario …

2) A better match making system. 1+1+1+1+1 v 5 or 2+3 isn’t cutting it.

Number 1 is probably the most vital of the two… the whole meta is based on what is going on within PvE. The whole Bunker Meta and CC craze came with each class obtaining traits and skill to be of use within Raids.

If the next wing requires a ton of Condi and condition traits and skills get a ton of love, guess what the next meta in PvP is going to revolve around? that’s right conditions! Until anet separates the two game modes 100% you can expect PvP to follow what ever is meta within PvE. In this case, what ever is needed for Raids.

A few questions about this and was wondering if you knew.

Why are they balancing around a PvE dungeon? It seems odd when you have Esports and WvW to be focused on such a small group of people to have the right stuff. Even if you based balance around PvP you could change the bosses in raids to match the correct difficulty levels.

My 2nd question is do they talk about build diversity? Like spirit rangers could be great for 1 vs 1 but poor in team fights and power rangers should be good in team fights but poor at 1 vs 1?

Im just really curious, since the HOT release i have felt there is less builds to play and less ways to have a effect on a match. Obviously you might have no knowledge of the insights of the balancing game but im interested if you know anything and if you could share.

I’m not told jack squat from the Developers or other staff members.

My Routine:
Read the forums →Grab threads from PvP → Compile them into a weekly report → throw in my 2 cents → send email to anet → wait 4-5 days for confirmation they received it and thats it…

I do talk to a couple of anet people on a day-day basis but its more of a friendship basis and they don’t like talking about work during their off hours unless they have too.

So i’m stuck in the dark like the rest of you :X sorry.

This game is not dead. It will die sooner than devs think I guess, but not from balance, pvp or anything else. It will die from the simplest bugs. Still there are bugs that imply the unprofessionality of Anet. Still we experience same issues. Still a patch gets fixed at least three times. These will kill this game, not balance. Every game have balance issues, it is normal in MMO’s. But I have never seen such simple yet annoying bugs not getting fixed after months and months (even years). These are simple, yet makes a player feel that Anet is not competent. It feels they are not professionals. Most of my friends tried the game, and said the same thing; “You have these bugs for that long? But these are simple problems?”.

This is how this game will go down, if Anet does not act in haste, simply and quietly.

Anyone who plays PvP in this consistently already knows this deep down inside. The proof is right in front of us. It has been over 3 years since release and every attempt by the developers to reconcile and balance this game takes it further and further down the path of garbage. Esports? This game pulls 3k viewers at best during the official events. I would suggest anyone who reads this and feels the same way to abandon this piece of kitten.

Champions Online had more power creep than Guild Wars 2 could ever archive in its life time, 1 Hero could solo 95% of everything on CO. Guild Wars 2 cannot match that kind of power creep and never will.

All the Villains was so freaken easy you can make a Freeform Hero and just spam two-gun mojo and that’s it just sit there holding the 2 button down and sit there.

I think one thing that’s really hurting PvP was the addition of the Elite Specs.

Hear me out on this. With the addition of the Elite Specs in PvP, it’s now become mandatory that you run them to be viable. This is great for Anet because people will throw down money to be relevant but where this hurts the game specifically is with the builds. Because one of your specialization slots is locked into the Elite Spec at all times, that only leaves you with two slots to actually make unique builds.

You see everyone running the same stuff all the time because that’s the way it is, while the first game for example, added more variety. You had 8 slots to put whatever skills you wanted, 8 attribute slots to spec and a second job that added other skills from your base class. You rarely ran into people who were running the exact same specs and skills that you were. It kept it unique and fresh while this games system has everyone running the same generic builds that the next guys running.

The addition of a locked in spot for Elite Specs without it being an optional thing is what killed variety. They’re just too good to replace with anything else and if you do, you get wrecked for the majority of classes.

Precisely that. Since many classes depended on the allocation of trait stats to stay alive (elementalist and the 3000 hp it gained from water line even with berserker amulet) when the new dev broke the old trait system and came up with an equal stats boost (not all stats were equal) then the balance became a train wreck.

I mean seriously they have been trying to fix that new trait system mess for how many months now? Build variety was just killed the day they started preventing people from getting some stats from trait lines and being able to add points in 5 lines.

They also broke the concept of adept/master/grandmaster traits, which was only there to reward you if you place more points in the same lines. But it wasn’t obligatory to max out 3 stats lines, you could instead play with 4 lines or 5 if you desired.

I know not everybody agree, but for me that is the turning point when the game went from being really good to a below average typical mmo. They also broke the unique build I was playing and perfected for almost a year on the day they implanted that and removed condi duration/boon duration from trait lines (a 4-lines build using hybrid power and condi duration).

It is also the reason why I stopped playing the game. This new Trait system, even if they manage to fix it in the coming year, is never gonna be as fun and varied as the old one.
