Upcoming Reset.
you can’t normalize where people start on the leaderboards after a reset. it’ll look exactly the same as this leaderboard just with higher/lower mmr numbers.
It does matter because if they make it too high theyre being matches with veteran or highly skilled players. I don’t know the numbers on the actual MMR scale but from experience I could tell that the newer players tended to drift towards the 75% (i spent a week in that elo) so they should really just be put closer to that, in my opinion.
Secondly, the values should be normalized and not wiped entirely. As to what the actual value should be, I don’t know. I don’t know the ins and outs of the current distribution.
Not just for the sake of the matchmaking higher up the table but also to prevent the horrendous first impression that high of a rating creates for new players. Not only are they thrown into a situation they’re not prepared for, but if their team can’t carry them the new player gets sacrificed in chat to the rage gods.
If I had my druthers about it I’d drop the starter rating to somewhere between 25-50% – maybe even lower depending on how the curve works. Don’t give them anywhere to go but up, and keep them far away from the veterans as long as possible until they’ve earned their way there. That way when they lose they’ll understand they’ve hit a skill ceiling and need to improve, rather than just get exploded off the map into a free-fall down the leader boards without having a clue of what just happened to them.

Oblivion is right. Just adjusting the numbers won’t do much, if anything.
I hope by the next time we reset, if ever, we’ll have a much nicer way to deal with the problems Acandis.3250 mentioned. This is one of the reasons we were very resistant to the idea of an MMR reset.

one thing i really would advocate is showing people their ratings instead of just the leaderboard #.

But that might reveal secrets anet don’t want us to see yet =]

I definitely agree with this.
I guess one of the reasons Anet has dodged this in the past is related to how progress is perceived. Over time, your Glicko rating might decrease even though your leaderboard position increases. This is because people keep winning and losing against each other, and the ratings decrease across the board.
Many people are aware of how this works, though, so it might not be as big of an issue as Anet thinks.

Leaderboard rank = your order when sorted by MMR – decay.
The decision to not show MMR was made before leaderboards were a thing. I’d guess it’s related to how people treat rank, and Glicko is even harder to explain.
Personally, I’m all for transparency. I’d rather have a transparent system that’s documented than hide potential mistakes. Though an transparent system may mean less flexibility when it comes to making iterative changes because they’d need to be announced ahead of time.

nice. Maybe rank should be exclusive to hot join, you still keep your rank when u solo q. But you are matched according to mmr and this is shown in the solo q or team q game.

Having a visible MMR can negatively impact how rewarding the game feels. Still, I agree with Symbolic and others that I’d rather have transparency than a system that patronizes the playerbase. No clue if that’s the majority vote, though.

Does anyone know if the upcoming reset will also reset the wins/losses?
Since I knew the reset is coming, I took the opportunity to mess about with the ele, but my w-l ratio tanked hard xD
i remember they said ages ago the mmr is hidden so ppl cant exploit it – it would be easier to find out how it works when can see it
mmr is just to find a team and enemy for you and people dont need to know
somehow like this was the explanation

No
Having a visible MMR can negatively impact how rewarding the game feels.
Why
Because your MMR can decrease even though your leaderboard placing goes up. Elo/Glicko is a cruel mistress in a team game. Let’s say you put 1,000 hours into PvP and end up with a lower/near-equal MMR than what you started with. That type of “progress” might not sit well with some.

The upcoming reset should be a soft reset.
What does this mean? it means everyone’s MMR should be normalized according to the new entry MMR (I still think it should be around the range the 75% have). Additionally, people should not gain a spot on the board (or visible rank) until they have played at least 10 games.
Why? because:
- If we do a hard reset, we will have the gigantic clusterkitten of new players getting matched with veterans all over again. Nobody wants that.
- By moving new player entry to 75% they are in a place where they won’t get paired with or against people that have much more experience and understanding than they do, so they don’t sink whatever team they are on.
Oh and ranks 1-20 should not be allowed to play ranked Solo Queue.
and only ranked 72+ should be able to play ranked team.
Having a visible MMR can negatively impact how rewarding the game feels.
False.

False.
Not saying it does for you, but it might for some.
Say you play PvP actively, win some and lose some. Maybe you even go on a few winning streaks and overall win more than you lose. After a few months, your placing on the leaderboard has increased, and life is good. Except that MMR-wise your rating might not have moved at all, or it might have even decreased. It’s all about how the population overall takes games from each other, and how the population settles on the curve. Hence my comment on the perception of progress and the sense of being rewarded for your time investment.
For the record, I advocate a visible MMR.

this might be true, but it worked f/e in GW1 leaderboard. you knew your rating and after some time you knew how much you will win/loose by facing better or not oponents.
at least you have had some kind of clue.
to me everything is better than absolutely not knowing whats going on.

He’s raging about lack of pvp content…
Every two weeks, I see so many new PvE contained, I see a part of people in this game happy ! BUT PVP PLAYERS IS NEVER HAPPY, *and always forget !
Are you kidding right? Do you even realise how kittening dumb and boring pve is in this game? I can’t believe someone actually likes playing that crap. I mean I have nothing against pve per se, but pve in gw2 is all about grinding huge world events and spamming aa like a kittened monkey together with dozens of bots/players (not really sure wtf they are). On top of this kitten it’s not like you farm with a purpose, since wvw is terrible and pve is…well…just that…farming. So yea basically you waste hours and hours of your life grinding gold. Once you get the money you can go back farming with some new shiny super c00l weapons. If that’s anet’s view of “new content” then I prefer no content at all. People playing pve 24/7 are not having fun at all, they are just addicted to the game…I know “addicted” is a tough word but that’s exactly how pve in gw2 is surviving.

Just add PvP seasons and reset the leaderboard after after each season end. Yes the matches will not be balanced for the first couple days after reset but who cares. it’s simple thing to do and you should do it now!
Can we get a permanent leaderboard decay just for symbolic please? pretty please!

No. You’ll get something better, but you’ll have to wait to find out what that is. Sorry, it’s outside my control when the news will be posted.

Hmm im dreaming of qualification matches..Divisions like LoLs…Or even better?
I am thinking about something similar to the division and LP-system from league of legends (I’m sure you guys could name other similar games).
Even Hearthstone is going live with a division system. Just speculating, but I think ArenaNets plans are going in that direction. Anyway can’t await the news
Edit: @Justin ODell: Thanks for posting here on the weekend! Really appreciate that!
