Verbal abuse is getting worse and worse
Yeah, much of the scene that is visible is horrible. Some people are down right crude and awful, which I can actually ignore. People who just like to rage I just tend to pitty.
The problem for me now is that EVERYTHING is "cheese". Have a build that works? Cheese. Win a fight? Noob. Lose? L2p lols.
I came back to the game because I missed the community, but anymore it’s hardly worth it. I even joined a guild thinking "cool, decent players with open minds." Nope. They are the same, complain if they lose and call everything cheese or awful and want to tell you what you should play, mean while they allow their close friends to play pistol SA builds and stealth phantasms and so on. (Wvw/duel heavy guild but do some spvp too).
Everyone seems to cater around a few high end players or players they idolize and disrespect everyone else.... Something should change.
I’ve considered making my own guild just so people could have a safe haven from criticism and people to learn with, even though I’m well past that point, I feel it’s something people need. It’s sad when troll guilds have more culture than just about any other pvp guild out there.

I agree. I’ve seen it on the rise as well. People are becoming super kittenbags. I’m a troll though, so it doesn’t affect me much. I just troll them.
be sure to always report them, and dont respond in kind. anet gives time-outs to people guilty of verbal abuse, because chat logs are easy proof.

That’s fine, like I said, I don’t mind ragers. It’s the belittling attitudes and snarkiness and General rudeness that starts to bother me. It goes from highly competitive to just trying to be an kitten for personal gain.

Block and report. Let Anet mods deal with em.
I couldn’t help but notice this snarky attitude spiked after Anet’s huge 75% off sale…GW2 PvP is nice since it’s less toxic than other PvP I’ve had the…misfortune of witnessing. Get your immature ragefest out of my chill PvP matches, yo.
It’s sad that a lot of people are driven away from PvP because of this…why can’t people just be civil and go ‘GG’?

Blocking doesn’t fix anything. Most times these aren’t punishable issues. People are just rude and belittling. It’s sad because it spreads to new and old players. I used to know some great people who devolved into the same manners as everyone else because it’s the only way to not want to give up, firing back. Frankly it’s sad that ANet doesn’t take it more seriously, but even if they did, people find ways to be rude without breaking any rules, so it’s not likely to change.

That was a problem also in WoW that got solved by Blizzard. They’ve ajusted the life points to be really high anoth so you can make mistakes but still come out of it. Take note that healing & regen also got ajusted so not to be abusive. I recently played & it was fun not to get one shoted or even mobed by players. Gw2 Spvp got frustrating & i also got abusive verbally cuz im getting pugs with in my team. & it’s frustrating me. It’s not as fun as it use to be. Maybe Anet should take notes from competitors.
ya I usually only turn on team chat during pvp.
The problem is when your teamates start kittening you in team chat, that is unavoidable.

That mechanic wouldn’t work here. PvP is supposed to be place of equal footing where only skill gets you ahead. No crutches, no boosts, no X amount of gold, no excuses, no nada. The issue of the matchmaking system is people are not getting paired up/against those of similar skill.

psh, I play how I want. Colin says it’s ok =)
It is getting bad,
I’ve reported this numerous times based on a ton of the threads on this topic that seem to pop up almost weekly. Until we hear something (same boat as you guys), the best thing to do is:
1) Ignore them
A) Turn off Map Chat/ Say Chat
B) Report those that cross the line (racism, death threats etc.)
2) Try to foster a positive environment, if you see a lot of negativity going on, try to put a positive spin on it. E.g. “Stupid thief can’t even stay alive” instead of joining the trash the newbie train, try responding with something like "Hey, you’re doing great damage but you should try attacking from behind ".

I think I’ve only had three instances of verbal abuse in the last month. And while one was in poor taste, I admit I hadn’t been entirely on my game that match. Some people really aren’t used to how anyone other than the happy-kill-lunatic-duelists go about contributing to their team’s score .
And it was pretty hard to get worked up over a thief calling me a no-skill newb while he was lying in a pool of his own blood waiting to respawn after failing to dislodge me from a point long enough that an ally arrived and kicked him in the junk (a bunker build actually defending? preposterous!).
Does a player standing over my broken body wondering aloud how his team is losing against such bad players count as verbal abuse ? (Hint: when I’ve dragged you a third of the map from any capture point and we still hold the one the fight started at, you’re not actually playing that well…)
I wonder what your basis for comparison is…”
- Jareth, King of Goblins.
It’s not just when you do bad, it’s when you do good as well. People don’t like being beaten - understandable. But some people feel the urge to prove this to you by whispering you and making excuses, often ending in an insult - the most common being noob, nub and scrub, but worse ones are sometimes made. Some of these people do come across as rather dim witted though, to be fair. It’s like not only are they behaving like trolls, but also share the mental capacity of one. Perhaps they are really just angry at themselves.
Anyway, the problem is ANet only do what they can in response to reports - there’s nothing else they can do really - and threads like this only feed the egos of those people.
Only the other day some guy I killed whispers me after a match - and I quote - "let me gues without attack from stealth and evade spam you hasnt the skill." (I saved it because the things he said were actually quite amusing). Well, so that means with stealth and evades I have skill, but without them I have none? Like, I can’t gank from stealth, or evade burst if I can’t enter stealth or evade. Well, duh. Of course, he refuses to accept - despite being a D/P thief and it being perfectly fine to do so - that he was the one always engaging in stealth, and that I, being S/D not running acro, had evades equal to his evades and blinds, and actually didn’t engage him from stealth once so he had to have been complaining about stealth from thief stolen skill + surprise shot with short bow /facepalm. He further insisted that shadow refuge, which we both had and both used throughout the match, is a noob skill that cowards use, and that he did not use it because he is not a coward. So my skill is my skills, and without my skills I have no skill (well done), it’s ok for him to use stealth but not for me, he has intelligently selected a utility skill that he never because it is cowardly, and when he does use it he doesn’t actually use it.
My point is, there is just no talking to these people. They either lack the ability to reason, are trolls, or are genuinely unpleasant people. Threads like this is what they want. The thief I was just talking about even told me to go and cry on the forums, even though he was clearly the one who was upset, and I had absolutely nothing to complain about. Just treat them like they’re missing something and helpfully explain to them what they need to do to improve and they’ll eventually just tell you to shut up and stop pestering you, or block them right off the bat.

I’ve spoken to a few PvE friends, and they’ll tell me the reason they don’t want to PvP is partly because of the bad toxic rep PvPers have.
This game has a more ‘chill’ atmosphere than the other PvP games I’ve played. I’ve noticed a trend, where players that try to talk smack and act big usually aren’t that good anyway..
You can’t really blame the players for this, as competitive games always comes with some banter. If you’re that thin-skinned and feel offended by some trashtalk you better stay out of PvP completly. The only one to blame for the toxic attitude is first and foremost ANet and to some lesser degree the PvP Noobies / yourself.
Even back in the old rank system people trashtalked you sometimes for having a relatively low rank (<45), but it was also a hint how much effort some1 put in PvP and how experienced some1 is. With the new rank system and the removal of showing ranks at the end of the match, theres basically no indicator that tells you how experienced some1 is. The rank system was completly ruined by skyhammer farming and giving away r80 for free. Theres tons of r80 that obviously have no clue about rotations at all. It’s tiring having to play with these players and of course makes veteran players angry
Personally, I’d say that the majority of toxic players are newbies/ pve players that rarely even know the basics of PvP, but then blame others for their failure. These people are simply learn-resistant and will flame you if even if you’re a far more experienced pvp player. So, to some degree, you brought the toxicity upon yourself.
Not to mention that the matchmaking seems to get worse and worse and you’re being punished for having a good mmr rating. High MMR players should never be matched up or even put in the same team with complete newbies to even out the MMR average, but thats exactly what ANet is doing atm, so I stand by my word, its not the communitys fault.
Kinda right

It’s not a boost or anything like that. It’s just an adjustment to life points to all classes so they don’t get one shot or even mob gank in 1 sec. & only done for pvp. This could work also in WvW. (Slight different adjustment) & Yes, the mechanic would work here perfectly. With this method, players frustration seems to seep out. No matter how much newb, pug or mistakes that player makes. But like i said, there are adjustment to be made so you would not have immortal classes. Like i said b4, the verbal abuse & frustration in this game is there’s cuz really no room for mistakes. Or else the advantage goes to the ones who has the least done so. That’s why ppl are screaming crap on team chat towards team8’s cuz of newb mistakes or other similar reasons.

And why are people not getting paired up/against those of similar skill? Maybe because not enough people are even playing PVP? And why are only a few people playing pvp? Because when they do play they get paired against pro opponents so then they stop playing. It’s a circle of problems without an easy to solve them.

Dude, it’s a game that comes with a learning curve, and that’s exactly what’s fun about it. You never suicided to a turret engi when you were new? Sure, you can tell them, without insulting them, via map chat, what strategy you think is best (and should do so). You can be annoyed to get bad players in your team. But why insult bad players? You’re harmful to the community. PvE players always complain that insults and bad sportsmanship drive people away from PvP: well the matchmaking will not get better any time soon if people are discouraged to learn and progress by comments of the type “go back to PvE/WvW zerg”. I don’t get why you feel the need to belittle these players. Ask yourself that question the next time you get angry.

Your right!!!
There,s is not anoth players playing spvp causing the mix & match between pugs & vets. & that bin the problem since day 1. & Anet have addressed the problem multiple times with the same result. Spike of ppl at the beginning then population comes back down to almost original underpopulated state. Many reasons why.. Problem number 1, the frustration the unbalanced spvp brings up. No wonder there’s verbal abuse on chat from players.. Like i mentioned before, Blizzard adressed the same problem on there pvp by making toons with more life points so players don’t fall to easily. I dont know how many times i felt like quitting cuz ranger would lock me into place & i would get ganked into place by Mob no matter what… at least with more life points, you get chance to escape & retreat the situation & come back into action.
Ps: More life points would prolly fix the abusive premade teams such kitten Turret Eng.. Imagine not being torn a part right away by such a team & being able to actually hit back. Now that would be interesting!!!
(edited by Vieux P.1238)
The whole problem with the “skill based no crushes” thing is that… There’s actually a lot of it. We can cry team based game from the high heavens but the problem is no one who plays the game actually wants it to be or treats it as such. (Except… Maybe the top teams doing events) these people want “PvP” not “conquest map rotation picking when to engage team fights without any defined phases or lanes” (and its a watered down experience considering MOBAs do the team fight dynamic better and has lanes and phases)… (Fingers crossed for stronghold btw.)
This creates a problem with the mentality
Often if a low skull cap cruchy build beats something that has to try much harder the player struggling to fight due to the advantage gets salty.
However
If a high skill cap cluchy build out plays something that naturally counters it by design but makes good use of terrain via LoS and positioning. The guy with the cruch gets salty since he’s not getting easy wins.
Ultimately I notice more toxicity between both team players and opposing players in team based competitive games. But more 1v1 oriented games I feel it’s a bit more professional and a general air of respect even when against cheesy plays.
That being said our community is still significantly better than XBL xD

Nobody is forced to play PvP or to read or to answer at other people personal opinions (incuding myself). If you no longer enjoy PvP, stop playing. It’s simple.

Yea, typically you can get away with verbally kittenting on people when you’re too weak to control yourself…hence the current state of the community.
But hopefully Are aNet will take a step back and realize what this is doing to the community it likes to talk so highly about. Stories like the OP’s are becoming very common, sadly.
Oh, and if blocking people solved the problem, there wouldn’t be so many of these threads, but I’m sure it’s easier for you to think that it does.

You cannot make such a statement unless you believe bad players are a homogeneous group of people who all decided to not bother learning. Your statement would only be true for a specific individual and it takes more than a match to be better. It takes a while to learn your build enough to play against others and it takes a while to learn the mechanics enough to not the low tier mistake.
The problem is the people who can teach them example like you, get easily frustrated (which is within your right) and blame the new people instead of Arenanet for grouping them with you. Obviously this could have been avoided by simply forming a team, but I digress. The point being it is Arenanet’s fault not the pugs and if a good player was being a kitten to me, I know I would make sure to undermine them really really badly.
This is an mmo forum, if someone isn’t whining chances are the game is dead.

Well, I’m not sure I must argue about personal skill with someone who thinks thieves are broken because of perms-stealth-spam, but I’ll give it a try.
Just to give you a little bit of perspective on the subject: how did the good players become good? That’s right, nobody is a top player from day one. Sure, some people experience different difficulties at different steps on the learning curve, but somehow, a lot of players have reached a level of understanding that allows us to regularly have fun games with people that somewhat know what they are doing (at least they don’t focus on the bosses, to have really low expectations). So saying “bad players don’t care to learn” is obviously false in many cases.
But what if this one guy on my team REALLY doesn’t want to learn? What do I do? At this point I am forced to send him salty whispers, right? No! Why people? Why do you feel the need to insult bad players? It won’t make you win, it won’t make you play better, and according to you it won’t even help them to get better, since they are supposedly incapable of doing so! It’s ok to get angry. But next time you feel so angry you feel the need to insult another player, ask yourself if you’re not taking a GAME too seriously.
Some crazy people are still playing GW2 for fun.
After 2.5 years since release the game is good and balanced and more consumers start playing PvP each day. ArenaNet wants more customers to enjoy the PvP aspect of the game, so with every patch and every PvP Contest Event more and more players join PvP, therefore we also get bad players. It’s a package deal, and it’s not game’s fault, it is players fault (most of them consumers of content trying to devour more and more wins until every reward track is complete).
There are some really bad ragers for sure but for the most part I find other players I meet while solo que ranked not bad at all. in my experience if you que none stop you tend to end up playing with or against the same people over and over. If you happen to be bunched with a few of these jack kitten type of players the best thing to do is just take a 1/2 hr break and reque.
I think the raging is in part because of the poor matchmaking. It is not fun getting stuck on a team with others who are either way better or way worse than you. It because even more horrible because the two teams are likely not very balanced.
Bad matchmaking = bad community
When is ANET going to wake up and fix it? The old system was much better.

You have no right to decide what fun and what’s not!
The concept of fun varies from person to person, some like to farm mats, some like to speed run dungeons, some like to do jump puzzles..and some like to play PvP in a competitive way, that’s not to say people want to win always, but a decent match when you lose only to superior understanding of the game…that’s what the majority of pvpers want.
If you don’t want to adhere to same rules as others, if you don’t care of winning, if you are not trying your hardest…why do you leave hot-join?
Sure, nobody can stop you from joining unranked/ranked but if you come with the wrong attitude hen..you deserve every possible insult ( some insults like the OP received are clearly out of line and should be punished with no restriction)
A bad players who try his hardest, will contribute the most to the match and will make the experience an enjoyable one
By contrast…
A bad player who shows attitude, only brings out the worst from people, as such he deserves a very harsh treatment….because he’s there with the clear intention of ruining other people’s fun with no excuse
If you feel entitled to join what considered to be a “serious” match, simply because you’ve bought the game and don’t care the least about what other people consider “fun”….then be ready to receive what you deserve.
Clearly as I have already stated, there is a limit to what you can say to people and in no way I condone the people who insulted the OP
^ then stop running to far from the start of the game then fighting off point constantly killing the beasts at the start of a match leaving a 3v4 at mid on foe fire… that should be the only reason people start to get angry at you.
oh and that one guy that keeps suiciding into a turret engie who holds the point till his friend turns up and ganks them…
Dude, it’s a game that comes with a learning curve, and that’s exactly what’s fun about it.
The majority of bad players simply don’t care to learn and this is not something I’m stating, this is something these bad players constantly say…yah the matchmaking won’t change anything…ever
Unfortunately this is not a single experience, the majority of bad players will answer back with extreme attitude even when politely asked to stop doing something in particular
-Me : " ok guys we lost mid, let’s regroup first, hold close"
- Bad player: ……
-Me : “ok pls don’t go mid , you’re alone vs 3 people”
- bad player: ….( keeps going mid )
- Me: " omfg dude, you left again the close holder alone vs 2/3 enemies"
- Bad player :" kitten I know what I’m doing, I’m holding them and buying you guys time"
and it begins…
( This is not 100% accurate as situation, just want to illustrate the kind of players..I consider bad players with attitude that deserve insults )
I never really understood why people do such things. It confuses me.
I’ve been whispered a few times, usually after I’ve won a 1v1. (which happens very rarely) and been called a noob for winning. Wait what? My necro killed your thief in a 1v1, and I’m the noob? And I need to l2p? Huh?
I guess kittens will be kittens. Ignore them, and move on. I ain’t got time fo that!
It’s the chain I beat you with until you
recognize my command!”
I just laugh at such people. Like the one time I held up three people at the treb in Kyhlo for nearly a minute on my necro. Once downed they loled and called me a noob. Yet I just laughed to myself as my team captured all three points in their absence lol

The amount of whining is so high that I long ago started turning off map chat, team chat, etc. before joining any sPvP match. My god, do people whine.
Good news is that sPvP is a pleasant (if only occasional) diversion when everyone’s been muted
But the community is laughably ungracious compared to what I’ve experienced in WvW and general PvE.

Untrue, everyone is expected to play as a team. I just came from a game where you were on my team who literally did nothing to help out the team even when asked.
Telling someone to be a team player = whining is quite surprising to me. And that really is the problem. Might as well play a solo game instead of an MMO tbh if you mute chat and refused to work with your team.

I think this would depend on what server you play on and whether or not you’re solo-roaming. I find block-whispering/trolling pretty common in upper tier servers, even when you’ve handily won the fight.
As it stands, GW2WvW.net has its own share of vitriol. PvF might as well be a supplemental gametype over there.

I’ll admit to being a really detrimental human being when I que without a team and get really bad randoms or people making bad plays.
I’m telling you right now though, even people who look calm and collected like Tarcis, Ostrich, or Vain, they ALL rage because conquest as a game mode requires map awareness and not simply mechanics or winning fights.
This is WHY courtyard needs to be a separate que. Some people will lose their sanity getting que’d with people who refuse to understand how to rotate or delay a point for when it counts, it’s just that ridiculous.
Conquest is NOT MEANT FOR CASUALS. That’s all. The way that ANET will get casuals into the game is to make Courtyard into a different que.

Nah. Never was and never will be a “casual” game mode.
If it was “casual” it would be like Arena in smite where all you focus on is killing, winning team fights, and the side-objectives are very minimal. But it isn’t, it requires map awareness and rotation knowledge, two KEY things that a “casual” will most likely not have.
Conquest is NOT a casual game mode. Believe me.
