So I took a kind of long hiatus from the game and recently came back and hadn’t played PvP in a while (which was honestly what steered me towards this over other MMO’s in the first place) and I noticed that instead of all the basic pvp servers being 10 v 10 like they were at release they are suddenly all 5v5. I didn’t think much of it until I started to play and kept running into the issue where one team would start to win just a little bit which would prompt someone to immediately quit which quickly turned it into a 2 v 5 and the game is extremely lopsided before the autobalance can even kick in. Maybe I am mistaken but I didn’t ever recall that being a problem in the past when it was 10v10. If someone got mad and left there were still 7 people that could make a difference. By reducing the number it really throws the chance at a fair game right out. End rant. Was there a reason behind that change?

I don’t think there was ever a 10v10, but there was 8v8. However, I have not played since launch but rather ~2 months after, so I may have missed it.

IIRC, someone from ANet said that the reason behind the elimination of 8v8 was that the game is balanced around 5v5 and 8v8 was too much and not balanced, or something like that. I miss the old 8v8, they were random and quite fun and a 7v8 was not that much of a difference, as opposed to the 4v5s we get now sometimes…

Anyhow, it’s gone and it’s highly unlikely it will come back.

I think you can make your own private server and set it to 8v8, but not sure.

8v8 was great fun, but Anet decided that eSports was supposed to be 5v5 and proceeded to make PvP suck. I had hoped that the new HoT mode would bring back 8v8.

Seems like anet tried to make it like a certain “moba” and reduce it to 5v5. I much prefered 8v8. Atleast SPvP gives tomes so i can go back to WvW and Silverwaste x3.

Play Unranked/Ranked. The vast majority of matches will be 5v5 from beginning to end. Every now and then there will be people who disconnect or ragequit, but it’s far better than the hotjoin experience.

Edit: Also, they’ve added custom arenas into the game. People could make 8v8 servers or even 10v10 servers if they wanted to. Unfortunately, having your own custom arena is expensive.
