I am curious, and what spec are you referring to? I usually do not lose to rangers 1v1. Why am I hearing people say this more and more? ISO facts.

I think rangers are very good 1v1. When they use their condition trap tanky build, they are very hard to deal with.

horrible title, but generally as a mesmer rangers pose no threat to me, but I fought this one ranger on a dueling spvp map and he beat me every time..

Just like elementalists, Rangers need to figure out the best builds and strategies…. elementalists complained so long and then one guy uploads a video of him owning people with his dagger/dagger build and now look at them… without any changes to their class the majority of them learned to play the correct way.

I am interested in what spec people are using to get this desired unbeatable 1v1 class that roams around owning people? Why are people saying this more and more on forums, is there something I am missing?

I main mesmer btw.

I hope you don’t mean me, but I am honestly looking for a reason as to why people are saying this. I am trying to unearth this mysterious build. I assumed their main build was traps…is there something I am missing?

A well played ranger, with almost any build is unbeatable 1v1, too many dodges.

Rangers dont have to use defense build to be viable in 1vs1. Trapper for example does decent damage and due to the evades u can avoid almose any burst damage. If they spec defense it becomes almost impossible to kill them before the pet kills you. Thats the upside of non-scaling pet attributes. Also as a ranger you can have 3 condition removals which work periodically and independent from each other and they are a viable counter against tornado elementalist since they have a 20 sec stability elite.

If you did not die against a ranger in the past than you are just playing spvp against low level pugs.

the only way for a mesmer to beat a ranger 1vs1 is to pick up staff and use phase retreat as much as possible, and he will win after 2minutes of fight, and only because his pet will lose mesmer tracking ( 6 months and phase retreat still makes pets to drop target, LOL), and only if the ranger doesn’t play well.

rangers are by far the strongest 1vs1 class, and even 1vs2 is no problem for them as long as they run a good build and his opponents are not a double burst opponents.

The sooner ranger players understand that their pet is part of them, the sooner ranger will be feared hard.

Teams are already dropping their mesmer for a ranger.

If your beating a trap ranger 1on1 with a mesmer, odds are it isnt a very good trap ranger.
Yes rangers, and ele’s are probalby the strongest 1on1 class in the game.

I’ve always been of the opinion that Trap Rangers are actually terrible duelists. Other Ranger builds though, that’s a different story entirely. You have a Fear, Immobilize, and Entangle to worry about. Beyond that just dodge roll out of the traps and you have mitigated the vast majority of the damage.

As long as they face the common nab ranger "shortbow mc quickness ", it’s going to be difficult for people to understand how strong rangers are.

Believe me I’m not fighting Trap Rangers that use their Quickness on Shortbow autos. Their damage is almost entirely in the Pet and Traps. The traps require the Pet CC or the Elite to actually pull off more then a tick or two of effects. If you mitigate the CC and keep mobile you mitigate the majority of the Trap damage and Pet damage. Especially if you carry mild condition removal.

I’m not saying Rangers aren’t strong, nor am I saying Trap Rangers aren’t strong. A flat out duel though by a Trap Ranger isn’t what I see as their strong point. Trap Rangers are fantastic for anti-bunker, team fighting, and point defense. There are better builds, and especially better Ranger builds for the specific purpose of dueling.

I had a fight with one today and he kittened me up, whats the build for it. I want to test it on my ranger to see how it works.

Its true that alot of classes probably have specs that are good for 1on1 specifically but not useful in team conquest games.

I think what most people mean by 1on1 viability is related to tourny play.
Rangers, have a spec that is viable in tourny play , that makes them contenders for the strongest 1on1 TOURNY speced class.

Yeah the class is a lot like mesmer’s, it’ll take awhile before people actually realize how to fight against them. There isn’t really a best 1v1 class. It all depends on what players against you are running compared to your spec.

There will always be a bit of rock/paper/scissors in 1on1.
But , in terms of tourny meta viability. Rangers seem to do very well 1on1.

The higher the level of play you go, the more similarity (if not outright conformity) of specs you see. Not that things dont get tried out in paids of course.

Now , atm paids are a bit wild because of the 1teamvs 1 team situation, so normal rules dont apply. I dont know if trap rangers are the most common you will see in SPVP. But they certainly will be the most common kind of ranger you see in paids.

As a glass d/d ele, I really hate trap rangers. Hell I hate every kind of ranger. Makes me want to slap people when they say rangers are hugely underpowered and can’t kill anything and d/d ele is hugely overpowered and kills everything with ease.

I’m personally not going to tell you what gives Rangers trouble because I play a ranger and I don’t want the meta to change to anti ranger :P. Their are a lot of specs that give ranger trouble, not that that helps you haha

Rangers arent the best in 1v1.. Theres no class best in 1v1,it has to do with playstyle and build…

if you are a mesmer point defender you are a joke for any trap ranger. you dont have anything usefull to remove conditions and a trap ranger have insane burn damage. you as mesmer point defender need help of someone quick or you will loose your point.

before i leave this game, rangers point atacker/defender was in lot of teams, why? to counter the meta where almost every team was using a mesmer point defender.

I can vouch as a bunker engineer that rangers are the only class that can stand toe to toe on the point with me. A good ranger in melee range with its heals and stupid pet force me off point just to survive its damage. At the same time they usually can’t kill me unless I stay on point. I can jump off and then come back on and knock them off so they can’t take it.
IF their pets didn’t get a full heal when they swap it would be a whole different story.

I’m convinced that most people who post on the forums get all of their opinions about the game from the forums. It’s why you see the same generic arguments pop up over and over with essentially no understanding of how the mechanics of things actually work.

that is the reason for my build so i can kill vyn and java. the regular shatter mes build is laughable.

but 2 rangers on a team makes it very hard to try and beat.

Confusion mesmer > ranger

trap rangers aren’t that strong tbh – they are good for defending treb, thats about it, other builds and classes around that are just better at the role people want to push the ranger in.

i play ranger and can safely say that i win 95% of my 1v1’s.
the trap ranger specs is one of the most balanced but effective builds in the entire game. spike traps immobilize combine with fire traps pulse and shortbows positional advantage, leaves any opponent loaded with conditions that can be re-applied with a short cooldown.

now im not saying that you can just roll this class and stomp face, but if you take time to master the ranger, you will become unbeatable 1v1. (trap spec or beast master spec, against any class or build, including d/d ele’s)

I feel that the rangers Cd on traps should start when the traps are triggerd. so they cant immediately trap again after there traps are triggered.

However, it would allow them to move traps instantly as they could recast it anytime long as not triggered. So would be a trade off, but overall would make them a little more reasonable in 1on1.

1) The vigor you get from Primal Reflexes doesn’t stack with natural vigor so it’s not that great. It’s only 50% more endurance regeneration for 5 seconds every 15 seconds (or 16% more endurance generation). The only real use for this trait is the vigor boon can help protect some of your other boons from getting dispelled. However, it’s just one more boon for a necro to corrupt too. Sharpened Edges might suck, but it’s much better than Primal Reflexes.

2) Hide in Plain Sight is not totally amazing (especially against better players that know how to use skills on stealthed targets) but it’s certainly not a ‘joke’. Off-Hand Training is definitely more of a joke. Extra torch range is pretty much worthless especially when combined with a sword in the mainhand. The reduction of the cooldowns on offhands is decent, but it’s certainly not better than a 3 second stealth on a 30 second cooldown.

3) Smoldering (and +burn duration in general) is terrible both in PvE and PvP. Since burn stacks in duration anyways, and trap rangers have three sources of burn, you can keep it up indefinitely (especially if you use projectile finishers through the two fire combo fields). Also, conditions get removed so quickly and frequently in PvP, extending their duration by such a small amount (only 10% on only burn) has an almost negligible impact.

4) The point of the spec (as mentioned in Powerr’s link) is to be a “Treb User, Farpoint Assaulter.” That means he needs to do enough pressure to prevent people from easily destroying the treb and enough damage to kill someone on the farpoint before they can get assistance. Rabid is much better for those purposes over Shaman. Shaman might be better for some 1v1’s, but the damage output is pitiful. The precision from Rabid also has good synergy with the +30% critical damage from 30 points in Skirmishing and the Bleed on crit sigil/trait.

Actually off-hand training is one of the best traits for rangers Oo. Reduced cooldown on torch 5 and it covers ah far bigger area (in my opinion its twice as big as untreated).
However I also tweaked the trapper build so that its better fit to my playstyle.

there are different builds that make traps look kinda bad. any bunker-themed ranger spec can crush trap rangers and most other specs 1v1, usually 0/0/30/10/30. then you can go cleric’s or shaman’s. cleric’s for double raven, shaman’s for bleed stacking.

off-hand training is a joke?? is just one of MUST HAVE traits for any trap ranger build. lot of trap rangers even use 2 off-hand weapons, but this trait is especially for torch, witout it your torch is pretty much useless to defend/atach a point ( and that is the only reason to use a trap ranger build, as point defender or atacker)

i can just smile to mesmer guys saying can kill a trap ranger easy, yes they can if are fight them on open area (this only happen on hot join because i never saw a trap ranger on tournaments that isnt on near point or far capture point), if you need to defend/atack a point you are useless against them.

i know because i was a mesmer point defender and after sometime lot of teams were using rangers as point atacker to counter meta.
those fights were a nightmare, couldnt do any serious damage( they just need avoid iLeap and even a full burt combo take 50% health only) and as soon i have burn on me i was dead, dont forget i already loose my point because i cant stand on point otherwise i will die in 5-10s.

Defensive traps is monstrous.
