Why can't I PVP with my friends in the Battle Grounds?
I want to que up with friends and do a few battle Grounds. Why wont it let us? It really needs to be fixed. Yes i know SPVP but we are just wanting to relax and have fun. This needs to be fixed!
You can play with your friends via tournaments. We will continue as well to improve the ability to play with friends in pickup games, but it will always be somewhat limited because we do not want large groups of guilds pub stomping the pick up games.

Maybe an idea is to have you select a friend that you want to be matched with on your team? Only one friend; this will make sure that guilds/teams dont stomp randoms 8v8 games.
I’m glad Anet gets it. Now if the rest can just wrap their heads around it.
I understand the tourney format – but 3 of us + 2 randoms keep getting stomped by organized teams – so i do wish there was some sort of ability to make sure me and buddies are on same team in a PUG.
Then again – you can always play with ur friends by picking the same server #, and hitting the + button. sometimes on map changes the teams mix and match.
just wish there was a ranking / ladder so youd have an idea how good your tounrey randoms are etc,.

thats lame, what should i do when i want to play with a single friend? do i need 5 friends to play pvp? realy? and if i have 6 friends online? should i just kick 1 friend and play a tournament with the others?
i mean, whats the point of an mmo if i have to play it single player? at this point i should go back to swtor and play that single player mmo insted of this one.
You can join tournaments solo or with 1-4 friends, it might be challenging as tournaments tend to offer more “competition” but that is the option for playing with friends. Personally I’m glad the game supports sPvP for learning rather than as a way for organized guilds and pals to stomp random PUGs.
Personally, I am thrilled with the way sPVP is set up. I and my friends(including my brother, hafta love old-fashioned sibling rivalry <3) have been having a blast so far. I believe it promotes fun over points. Winning the match really doesn’t have a huge impact in the amount of glory you receive, so there isn’t much room to whine about that.
Mixing teams up is great for someone that really enjoys the game-play. It obviously allows for the most variety as far as match ups go. I also feel like it promotes good sportsmanship when the system discourages the ‘us versus them’ mentality by populating both teams with group-joins.
MMO = Playing with friends, no?
No one is stopping you from playing with your friends. There is a mode for that. There are just as many players (if not more) that want the ability to drop into quick matches, without being run over by premades. Anet has explained this time and time again, they are not going to change it.
This is a great goal, Jon Peters. However, there are sub-groups of people that wouldn’t break PuG’s in SPvP. Think about these examples:
- Husband and Wife playing together — Wife doesn’t want to play AGAINST her husband! (This describes my wife, by the way)
- 2 friends playing together in the same room
- Casuals wanting to play together
I have busted my chops in WoW’s Arenas and BG’s to get good at PvP in MMO’s, and it definitely reflects in my GW2 skill. It makes total sense that you do not want me and 4 to 7 of my other friends that are as good as I am to get on vent and steamroll PuG’s hardcore a few nights a week. However, there is a middle ground.
Please allow at least 2 friends to “link” together so they will not be swapped to opposite teams. That would really shore up this problem for a lot of people. If we did get 2 “hardcores” linked together, that is not enough to STEAMROLL pugs all night long. It certainly makes things funner that they can play with a friend, just like everyone else.
Now, I edited this post, because I wanted to add this: Tournaments are not a good alternative for this, because competition and structure are more than millions of casual players that will be playing this game want. I know for myself, in my new role as a dad, I cannot play tournaments. The reason is that i can’t devote (or won’t) the time it will take to run through a tournament just so i can play with my friends and wife without the worry of getting switched to the opposing team.
You can’t make everyone happy, but you should consider my suggestion, because it appeals to a great variety of players, and will make a lot of people happy. Even if we’re playing with 4 of us together, just having the confidence that you can play with at least 1 friend/significant other no matter what is a great consolation.
I hope that somebody reads this and passes it along to devs.

“I want to play with my friends in spvp”
You have to understand that the game is not only you and your friends playing, there are other people as well. If hot-join spvp allowed you to “play with your friends” on the same team easily, what do you suppose more organized and serious minded players would do with it? The common complaint against tournament play is that “it’s too hard and we lose all the time to super serious teams” — which is exactly what hot-join spvp would turn into if it was easy to collect people on one particular team.

This.
This topic brings back memories of RIFT pvp as well back when it was first launched. Anyone remember this monstrosity? Premades would que up in pvp groups and just curb stomp teams for hours on end and you got little to nothing from losing. NO ONE enjoys losing every single match for hours on end.
This is what would happen if groups could que together in random hot join pvp. It would ruin it for pretty much everyone and only the truly dedicated would want to pvp in this environment. Sorry but I do NOT want a RIFT repeat in my pvp.
I completely agree with Anet on this one
9 times out of 10 my guildies and I get put on opposite teams, this makes sense. Most of the time we can switch sides and be on the same team, just watch the rosters.
would be really nice to have a guild que, so we can do 8v8 matches with our guild, even if it is premade vs premade only. This is GUILD wars afterall isnt it? 0.o

The name Guild Wars has nothing to do with Players being in guilds.
Back on topic. I have to agree with A.Net on this one. Even though PVP is broken and the balance is crap. Letting pre-made groups stomp pugs is not good.

How about you make the matchmaking actually intelligent? If say a group of 4, a group of 3, and an individual are all queued then you could only match this group of 8 against another group of 4/3/1. You don’t HAVE to blindly place people in the match..

Can you not read or are you intentionally being daft? There is a group options, it’s called tournament play.

I think the OP was specifically referring to playing world pvp with friends from other servers. I would like to see this as well, so long as it doesn’t allow people from current enemy servers to WvW against their own side. I recognize that there are other, bigger issues currently facing world pvp for the moment though, specifically server balance and queues.

The op also says that he is talking about spvp, not WvW
A compromise on the friends vs pugstomp problem is to make it so that you can Hot Join (only) with one buddy to ensure a place on the same team, but the system will ensure you are put into games which have an equivalent number of buddy-gamers on the other team to balance you out. This is a half step between the current 8v8 random join and signing up for a free 5v5 tournament with just one buddy and hoping you don’t fight a full-5 (non pug) team.

and i’m loving that quality. it’s so much more fun. i find it even more fun when in one game you’re fighting with someone, and the next against. there’s a lot to like about this random system which really keeps you on your toes.

my wife and i play together of course. she’s as addicted to mmos as i am. and we’re both more addicted to the pvp than the pve. we’ll usually level one toon via pve and then the rest via pvp (where possible).
playing spvp was confusing when we ended up on different teams. in different games. on opposite teams. at first. but then we think about the other pvp matches like this in other games, and often we’d go to different sides of the battle anyway. so it doesn’t really matter. we both are highly competitive with and against each other (checking our personal ladder scores), so this has actually ended up adding a little amusement when we have to fight against each other for the first time.
i think it’s a brilliant system which hones your skills quite well and prepares you for tourny play, which will be where the team-skills will come into focus more.
i mean, of the three modes of pvp, one was made to solve all those really irritating issues of being stomped by guild premades. or unbalanced teams. you have to be able to see that, longterm, this highly random system makes for more challenge and less frustration. it’s not like you’re locked out from playing with your wife. i don’t feel locked out. we play wvwvw and would think about tourny. we still slay together.
i love the current system. it’s elegant, anet.
sPVP is suppose to be with randoms… and for the whole so many friends why dont we try to incorparte different brackets instead of 5v5 like do 2v2 3v3 etc.. itll help alot of complaints to be resovled
Duels. Severely wanted, even for the PvE open world. Perhaps only at a certain location to prevent lagging high traffic areas.
if you play well together as a team you can win in tournament matches … just a matter of tactics and teamplay….
on the PuG games, whatever, they are just PuG games, but it would be nice to play up to 2/3 guildies in a team without being shuffled into different teams!
Maybe 2 kinds of servers, one PuG one with 2-3 Premades?

What about 1 on 1 Fights? I would like to fight with my friends… At least make it possible to open pvp maps with a Password so only selected people can enter it.
This is my first time posting criticism/feedback on any game like this, but I have just spent a good amount of time gettingkitten off at this so I feel I have to leave my 2 cents.
I completely understand why the battlegrounds are designed this way, and I would be okay with it, if the system did not try to fit me into the same battlegrounds as my friends all the time. I am part of a very small guild of friends, and I saw one of my friends doing battleground so I decided to do some as well. I queued on my own, not even in the same party as my guild friend, yet we ended up in the same battleground.
That was fine, I guess, until that game was over and we got thrown into a new one. This time I had been moved to the other team. I got a bit annoyed so I exited the game, waited a few minutes, and re-queued. I got thrown into the same game once again, together with my guildmate, but on the opposite them of him. No matter how many times I try to re-queue now, I still end up in the same game as him.
This might be a case of extremely bad luck, but if the match making system insists on putting me in the same game as my guildmates, at least let me play on their team. I don’t care if I’m put into another game with a bunch of strangers, as long as I’m not forced to keep playing against my friends every time I happen to do battlegrounds at the same time as them. Please, at least give us an option to play alone if this is how it’s supposed to work.

Where is the problem exactly?
Just dont use hotjoin and select a Server by urself. Fixed!
Aside of that why wouldnt you simply play against ur buddy for 1 or 2 rounds?
I was very happy to read Anet’s response on this. I just hated in wow when premades were griefing pugs.
Gw2 pvp system is very polished, I love the maps and map mechanics, I love the equal playground, love the ease at which I can change talents, char stats and my playstyle.
Oh and I love that I finally I dont have to farm levels, honor, gear etx. before I can jump into fight in the evenings. Keep up the good work ArenaNet.
Cant wait to see more maps!
If I am online with two friends my options are:
— Find two more friends and take my PUG into a tournament
— Join sPvP and switch sides until we are all on the same team
I keep coming back Mike O’Brian’s quote from the GW2 Design Manifesto:
“MMOs are social games. So why do they sometimes seem to work so hard to punish you for playing with other players?”
What is wrong with a player rating system that:
— Keeps track of player’s wins and losses in sPVP (already in game)
— Defines team rating based on the players’ ratings
— Inflates the rating of any linked or pre-made teams (to account for their better communication)
— Then pairs up similarly rated teams?
Solo players would not get stomped by pre-mades, and a group of friends could play casual, non-tournament sPVP together.
Ulari
Ulari I’m no developer, and maybe your idea is feasible, but I think it makes too many assumptions about how to rate teams, and may have a high chance to incorrectly match players up. I think you are over-engineering the solution and introducing too many new problems.

This has been said multiple times before, non-tournament spvp does not use any kind of matchmaking and CAN NOT use any with the current setup. This is because the players can themselves choose whichever server they want, completely nullifying any effect applying a matchmaking system to the “play now” button would have.

This is honestly a deal breaker for me. My cousin and I have been playing video games together since we were little kids, and now we find this awesome game that has everything we want in an MMO, except that we can’t do PvP together unless we find 3 other people to play with. That is just dumb, there is no other way to put it, it’s stupid. The main reason we bought the game was for the PvP, and now we can’t even PvP together unless we do tournaments. That doesn’t even take into account the fact that I enjoy 8v8 more than 5v5 anyway.
At least make it so small groups of 2-3 can join as a party.

You’re halfway to a tourney team. Just find another small group of friends and enter free tournament. Or enter with just you two and it will find another group of 3 that need 2 and it will pair you up.

But if just the two of us queue and we get matched up with 3 random people, then we will be at a disadvantage against a premade of 5. So I guess it’s ok if small groups of 2-3 people get stomped by full premades in tourneys, buts it not ok for a group of 2 people to join a normal BG with 8 people. That makes no sense at all.

I think it does make sense. Hot join bg’s are for shuffled groups. Tournaments are for organized play. Now as I can see you want to play organized in the unorganized group. Now that makes no sense to me.
If you want to play with your buddy/bro/fiance etc. there are couple of solutions:
a.) get 3 other players in Mists chat
b.) join a guild of your choice. If you are casual join a social/family guild.
c.) join a tournament and try working with the pug part
(edited by Rookdahta.9058)
It is extremely easy to play with friends in hotjoin pvp!
Party up with people on your friends list. One of you enter a server with few people and then you just rightclick on that guys portrait and “Join pvp with friend”! And you can allso see a symbol in the server list that indicates someone in your party is playing on that server. This may have been covered but Im to lazy to read all the posts.
MMO = Playing with friends, no?
so does just about anything, MMO doesnt automatically = playing with friends.
i agree with the reasoning of avoiding pubstomping, if you want to play more casual in a competitive match, trust me, if you could queue like your asking, you would be here complaining about balance and being pubstomped, which is far worse for raging.
if you really want to relax, play with friends in WvW.
sPvP IS competitive so even if your semi competitive, just use tournament.
unless ofc your just looking for a reason to pubstomp in which case my hats off to arena net for the current system.
I think allowing 2, maybe 3, to queue up together for same team Hotjoin 8v8 is fine.
Part of the fun is also playing against your friend, not always with. A small friendly competition can go a long way towards improving bonds.

How about you make the matchmaking actually intelligent? If say a group of 4, a group of 3, and an individual are all queued then you could only match this group of 8 against another group of 4/3/1. You don’t HAVE to blindly place people in the match..
Except you can join whichever server you want so that doesn’t work.
Except when you manually choose a server it could queue you for that server until another same size group queues.

So you’d have to wait for another same size group to queue for the same server out of 235 servers? And hope that there would still be room for both groups? That is simply idiotic.

Not if the groups were only allowed to be 2-3 people.

I play pretty regularly with my fiancee, if we sPvP we sometimes get put against each other… we knew that going in. sPvP is great for practicing, and figuring out new builds etc, there is a mode for organized team play, it is tournaments. The lack of team queue for sPvP is one of the things that (imo) contributes to this mode being fun in GW2.
this is obviusly a noob game where noobs are a priority and pros are left behind
These “noobs” that you speak of, make up the massive majority of MMO games. They are also the people that play the longest. Naturally they are going to be a priority. This is not to say some of the more sane requests should be ignored, but there should always be a form of quick join, no party, spvp for those “noobs”.
