Mesmer Personality Quiz! Exclamation Points!
A couple questions to the PvP/WvWvW vets. Please state your class to help clarify.
-If you’re being attacked 2v1, whats the first thing that comes to mind?
-What top 3 classes take priority in threat level? (I.E. If a Thief and Guardian run up to you, who is the bigger danger?)
-How much aggro do you pull in a fight?
-In a big group fight do you focus on any particular class first?
(P.S. Do Sigils affect water weapons in sPvP?)
Well my first reaction is usually to scream “HALP” over whatever voip my team is using and then try to survive long enough for a teammate to show up… I guess that mainly applies in tpvp though.
If your not a bunker defending a point, probably run. Only rarely will the opportunity to delay or mislead 2 ppl outway dying to them.
Run or Log out.
I don’t WvWvW much, but as far as sPvP goes, in a 2v1 situation I usually go after the one I think I can drop the quickest. Sometimes you have to play the target switching game to figure out what builds each one is using, but using your example, I would go after the thief first, if the thief stealths, hack away at the guardian until the thief comes back. As far as what comes to mind, defensive options and positioning. Are my defensive utilities/healing skills/etc off CD. Obviously WvWvW will be different, because it’s not all about ‘hold the node’ like it is in sPvP. In a 2v1 in sPvP my goal is to contest the node and stay alive doing it, hence positioning. Hope this helped.
Entire post is from a WvW perspective.
Depending on your Profession and build, you should know if you’re able to run and whether or not you’re able to 2v1. If you’re not sure you can take them but know you can run, make sure you keep that option open. If you know you can’t run and aren’t sure you can take them, just go for it all-out and if anything, make them have to run.
Prioritizing targets: Always focus an up-scaled player unless they’re a D/D Ele tank.
If you see a Guardian, assume he’s slow and tanky and focus someone else. If he’s rocking a Greatsword or Sword, assume he’s built for burst and treat him like a lower-burst, slightly higher survival glass cannon Warrior.
If there’s a Thief and he’s not up-scaled, don’t try to kill him, you won’t be able to. You’re better off focusing the other player and forcing the Thief to run.
If you see a D/D Ele, immediately try to determine whether he’s the burst build or the tank build. If they’re burst then pressure them early. If they’re tank then save them for later. Either way, avoid their initial CC combo. If you see a Staff/Scepter Ele, you should be able to get an easy kill if you avoid CC. If they hit you hard, then they’re built for damage and you’ll burn through them in seconds. If they’re mostly annoying but don’t hit too hard, assume they’re running Pow/Tuf/Vit and might take a bit longer to kill.
If you see a Warrior, assume they’re glass cannon. Make them miss their burst and burn them down quickly before they can burst again.
If you see a Necromancer, just keep pressure and burn them down easily (sorry Necros). If you don’t hit them hard and they’re stacking Toughness, focus someone else unless you manage to get them low quickly.
If you’re fighting an Engineer, stay on your toes as you never know what they’ll throw at you (literally).
Not sure what to tell you about Mesmers/Rangers as I rarely encounter them.

2vs1 is utter disasterimo and all because of downed system. Few days ago i logged in with my ranger for some pvp ( free tournament if i remember correctly).I go to a point and there is a engineer with half hp.I go into fight with him then his ranger buddy shows up.I down engineer and damage him from time to time to stop him from rezing while i fight ranger.I down a ranger too at this point my health is very low, then engineer pulls me in and does that explosion thing and i go down too.Next thing i know engineer is on his feet?!? and i get stomped. So i win a fight 1vs2 fair and square then i get defeated because of a crappy game mechanic, i know there are people out there who can understand how frustrating that is.Logged out, haven’t played since. I remember when i was playing Warhammer online with my marauder, winning a fight 1 vs 2 in or against a higher level player was so much fun and exciting and so exhilarating and satisfying, you earned that victory and it was yours. That is probably the feeling i miss the most when i pvp in GW 2.

Very understandable. This is what makes 2v1’s extremely frustrating and difficult to pull off. I main engi, so if I down 1 of them, I usually begin stomp animation and then pop Elixir S. If it’s on CD, then I get the exact situation you just described. Sadly, if you don’t have some sort of invulnerability, stealth, or stability combined with enough health to eat the damage the remaining person is throwing at you then 2v1’s range closer to the impossible side unless you’re built somewhat tanky. The best you can hope for usually is to hold off a point until help arrives.

ive had the problem where ive killed two terrible players who backpeddle miss with everything but i have to kill them 4-5 times over just because of how easy it is to revive someone faster than the finish animation.
From a Spvp perspective
-If you’re being attacked 2v1, whats the first thing that comes to mind?
depends how good the players are generally kill the squishies first. If you know they are a beserk build kill them, If they seem to be tanky switch target. Dont bother downing guardian first because they usually take a while to die. And never kill ele first because their down state allows them to get a pretty easy revive. Also dont be afraid to run while you wait for heal and reengage if needed.
-What top 3 classes take priority in threat level? (I.E. If a Thief and Guardian run up to you, who is the bigger danger?) Mesmers by far, and not because of the bug but because of all the utility and stun breaks they have.
-How much aggro do you pull in a fight? Not sure what you mean, In spvp my thief is generally ignored because i play pistol dagger, when im on my warrior i get focused hard.
-In a big group fight do you focus on any particular class first? D/D thief because they drop like a sack of stones. after that staff ele then ranger because they dont have the best escape mechanics.
(edited by mickers.2715)
I’m usually playing a Thief, so I have many methods to escape certain death.
So if 2 players (lets say a backstab thief and a bunker guardian) come running towards me. My first reaction would be dodge (the thief backstab steal fails).
Down the thief as hes an easy target, and run away.
If its a necro and a mesmer for example, I would damage the mesmer quite lot and check if I can kill him and still escape after.
But most situations depend on the situation and location:
- capture point
- allies nearby
- escape routes with teleports
- water nearby
- skills on recharge
- skilled / smart foes
- lagg
- what I had for breakfast
Run unless backup is nearby.
WvW isnt PvP, its linear PvE with the ability to kill others that are in the way of you getting your cute PvE castle.
If you want to win 2v1’s you need to play the right class.
Run and throw red circles in front of me while they run across. Go back and stomp one. Fail as he gets rezzed. Repeat.
It depends. Sometimes I will go after the biggest threat first(doing high damage), sometimes the most annoying (lots of CC’s) or sometimes the squishiest. If one falls into more then one category at once, for sure them.
Usually my priority is the one that’s doing massive damage to me though.
It all really depends, sometimes certain classes are just annoying as hell and I have to focus them down first.
You can’t really just say “I do this always” though.. For example, maybe I will focus on the bursty thief who’s a big threat to me enough to get him on the defensive then switch to the squishy guy and down him before the thief is back on the offensive.
It’s always situational. Another example. I’m playing a class with high mobility, I get attacked by a class with high mobility + one with low mobility. Well then I use my mobility to separate them (since one can keep up with me and one can’t), and turn it into a 1v1 at least for awhile.

Well, you have to remember as well, most people who are used to being able to 2v1 anyone are used to games where there are gear differentials in stats, or there are paper/rock/scissors mechanics that mean you will always come out on top if you even know remotely how to play your class if you are the dominant comp vs. the other.
In truly balanced PvP, and equal skill involved on all parties, you will never overcome a 2v1, not in an MMO. The downed state was introduced as a way to introduce more team oriented play. A lot of you don’t like it. A lot of us do… there’s few things in this game more gratifying than seeing a team that works together smashing a team that just wants to get individual glory.
I’ll start by saying that if you’re playing a 2v1 against good opponents, you probably won’t win. However, in situations where you don’t have any choice but to engage (e.g. your team needs you to keep a couple people tied up somewhere, you’re desperate to defend a point but help can’t come in time, etc.), your response is going to vary depending on your build. If you’re a bunker, do what you always do – 2v1 shouldn’t be anything unusual for you. If not, aggressive play is the key – you need to put whichever enemy you think is going to drop fastest under some sort of pressure and force them to go on the defensive. An enemy who’s trying to stay alive isn’t going to be able to focus on killing you at the same time, so you’re taking less fire than you would be if you just tried kiting both players or turtling. Unless you’ve got a lot of AoE, splitting your fire between them won’t be efficient and is most likely going to end up with you on the ground alone.
In the scenario you offered, Guardian and Thief, focus the Thief and try to catch him with whatever burst/CC/AoE your build can offer – don’t let him stealth, but if he does, remember that you can still hit him if you have some idea of where he is. Keep pressure as high as you can until your target goes down, while trying to pace your cooldowns (especially your defensive ones). If you burn everything you have killing one player, great, you got the kill, but you’re probably going down right afterward, and that’s not ideal. Similarly, if your opponents manage to break your offensive momentum and relieve pressure on the more fragile player, the fight is probably lost, so try to keep some tricks in reserve to help get you bounce back from interference.
In order to secure the kill, it helps immensely to have access to Blinds, Blocks, Stealth, Stability, Quickness, or Invulnerability of some kind (Poison can also be useful for slowing down revives). A mix of the above is ideal, and this makes some classes, such as Guardians, Thieves, and Rangers, naturally more suited to handling downed players on the field. If you can’t safely go for the stomp, back off and use ranged damage to pressure your downed foe while you kite and wear down the other – AoE can be a big help here, since it’ll let you accomplish both tasks simultaneously. If you’re in a position to down both opponents in rapid succession, try to keep some distance between them, to limit their ability to protect each other with their downed skills (unless, again, you have good AoE damage ready to go).
Finally, your specific approach will probably change based on the types of opponents you’re fighting, but there’s too much potential variation here for me to give advice that isn’t really just common sense. Generally, just be smart, and know that fighting a pair of say, glass cannons, is going to go down differently than fighting a pair of balanced builds. Once you know what you’re fighting, you can adapt the above strategies to handle your opponents appropriately (or at least put up a good fight before you drop).
In summary:
-Focus the more vulnerable player
-Pace your defensive skills as much as possible
-Have something ready to secure the stomp
-AoE can help a lot
-Play with your opponents’ builds in mind
It’s pretty basic stuff when you lay it out like that, but of course, the execution is where it gets tricky. Best of luck with it!
as a ranger i recommend going beastmode, but i hear the best advice is to release the kraken.

I agree that in a truly balanced PvP, when the players are equally skilled, you wil not win a 2v1. However, there are situations when you are a better players than the other two and should be able to win it, but the downed state makes it makes it almost impossible.
A FPS is generally balanced, it only depends of the skill of the players. In a 2v1 confrontation, if the players are all equally skilled, it is likely that the lonely guy will lose, but if he is a better player than the other two, he will be able to kill them. This should occur in any balanced PvP, as well as in Guild Wars 2.
I play a condition necromancer so the basic tactic while fighting 2 people is to focus on the target that is downed a bit more easily – for example if a bs thief and a warrior is atacking, I will focus on bs thief, since people do not usually run in situations 2 to 1. Of course you have to keep an eye on both opponents, and play a bit defensively in the beginning to learn how they fight (in cases when it is not as obvious as in bs thief/100b war). When I down an opponent, usually either try to stomp him if that is possible in 1 try (necromancers/warriors primary) if not I just put bleeds on them and run out of LOS that they could not attack me. And of course interrupt their heal, while attacking secondary target.
But it only works in spvp where enemies are not coordinated – other than that it is very hard to win 1×2 against good opponents without any help.
Im mainly wvwvw when im not pve ing dungeons. Running a wvwvw guide for mesmers on the mesmer forums called “shatter cat”. My latest vid is mainly about fight outnumbered, some group fighting tactics but focus is vs 1 vs 2 well geared players, some from same guild with marking and coms expected.
hope this can help some.

As others have said, 2v1 when enemies are coordinated, or just not terrible players is not really feasible. At best, you can survive and run.
If you’re playing bads, 2+v1 is sometimes feasible if you’re good. The key I’ve found is to plan for your defenses, have plenty of stun breaks, condition removal, and preferably some CC.
CC will help you lock down the squishiest target and get rid of them first. The trick is to even the odds as fast as possible both though quick kills + CC. Also, if I’m running up on a 2v1 I don’t hesitate to use my elite, chances are likely I’ll need it.
I’ve also found that WvW tends to be easier to pull this off on. While there are no shortage of bad players in sPvP, people do tend to make better builds IMO.
I’m actually a bit surprised by all the really informative responses. There’s a lot of great info here that -though much may seem like common sense- have stuck in my mind more strongly when I play PvP and I already see improvements in my gameplay.
What are the best CC’s for dealing with such dangerous situations? (Cripple, Chill, Immobilize?)
as mesmer fight it out, save decoy and blink escape any fight you want.
