how to tell if i am a good player?
Hi,
Well, to begin with, if you’re winning 1vXs on a regular basis i would say your MMR is average to low, that will climb up over time (then again the matchmaking system is unreliable :p), It is also pretty normal to get instablasted by getting jumped by both thief and mesmer at the moment, you’ll get used to it. Keep playing, you’ll see the tendency to 1vXs will decrease. Unranked will actually match you with a wide variety of players, if you want to play with people closer to your estimated skill level just play ranked. Costs nothing and has no consequences at the moment other than attracting nervous people that will flame anybody not going their way . So, there it is, good luck!
The way I see it there are four things you need to be a good player:
- Map awareness and knowing where to rotate.
- Knowing when to cap, when to decap, and when to defend.
- Technical skills with your preferred class.
- Knowing what your allies/enemies do and how to work with/against them.
To gain the class skill, try dueling. The wider variety of classes you can face the better you are. Dueling other rangers running a similar build as yourself is another good way to test your personal skill. Also, if you can confidently teach someone to play your class, then that means you’re good at analyzing the flaws in other peoples’ play.
Everything else comes with time as long as you’re making a conscious effort to improve.

Majority of players in queues aren’t particularly good, so you can’t really judge how ‘good’ you are by how well you do in queue. If you want to test your 1v1 capacity, head to a well-known 1v1 server.

i would like to know how to tell if i am a good or bad player.i am doing my best to be a great ranger. i would love to be on a team someday. but things go to extremes in matches most of the time.here is an example the other day i was capping tower and a mes, warrior and a thief tried to kill me i killed all 3 while there treb was hitting me and they kept coming back and they died every time but then another time a thief and a mes beat me in a few sec. so its hard to tell if i am just average pvper fighting bad players or if i am good just fighting better players. would love your guys input on this thank you in advance for your answers
first thing you are doing wrong is playing ranger. try something skill based if you wanna become a good player.
Just say this “Hi I will go get far alone, plz don’t follow me. thx!” then they think you are good and skilled lol

You’ll always find players who are better than you, and players who are worse. As long as you consciously try to improve, you’ll get better. You should try to:
1) Duel (Random said it already)
2) Play in a team from time to time, even just a group of noob friends
3) Play different builds, and in particular to play popular builds on other professions, to know what combos you must look for but especially to be familiar with the CDs.
Condi ranger fishing for compliments…….ok
You are a great player and should join a team and carry them to victory!

thank you for the advise will do
If you’re a ranger and killed a 1v3 while the treb was hitting you then you were playing pve heroes. You may be decent, but don’t try to master ranger if you want to be on a good team because a good team will never invite a ranger no matter how good he is, you would be better off playing and mastering something like mesmer, ele, thief, warrior, guardian.

You are not a good player, I know this because you play a ranger

While the class takes no skill, it isn’t effective atm. I do agree playing an easy class will not make you best at anything tbh.

What a stupid comment…
Being good in pvp is primarily about knowing when to cap, and when to rotate.
The top 5% of players could beat the remaining 95 no matter what class they play.
However, you’re not to going to experience that sort of skilled play unless you join a team.
Sounds like you are new so maybe play until you know the maps and classes a bit more, then look for team and let them teach you how classes play together.

Good question. This is what I think:
You know you’re a good player when you are sincerely confident enough to believe it without peer validation. Confidence, not kitteniness.
You gain confidence from initially getting beaten up a lot and then learning from your mistakes. You gain confidence when you are aware and keep track of your contributions to the team.
There is no such thing as “good”, just who gangs up on the other more, who watches the points better, who has builds that allow them to win with minimal effort/counter other builds easily, or just who plays dirtier.

That’s a very communistic way of looking at things while dismissing the abilities of those who really are better than us. I may not be one of them but I acknowledge good players when I encounter them.

Does anyone know why Anet doesn’t make MMRs visible?
P.S. On the side, they need to increase the reward track progression for higher MMR players. If they don’t want to show it, fine. At least link the amount gain towards your track by taking into consideration that better players should be rewarded according to their skill.
Otherwise, you have skilled and unskilled players earning rewards at the same rate. That…just doesn’t make sense. It’ll also allow us to see how good we are by how much benefit we gain from a reward track.
One thing is for sure
Do not play Mesmer
It is a terrible gauge for if you are good or not
The class itself will carry you post June 23rd 2015

Unless you come across an actual pro mesmer main, then you’ll know where you stand.

Hell, any pro player for that matter.

Every class is easy in this game, however Ranger is not the easiest by a long shot. It is harder playing at a constant disadvantage not easier.

You are still playing Guild Wars 2 pvp, you are most likely an average mmo player or below. All the good players left a long time ago. That is why this game’s pvp is a kitten fest and will continue to be so until it dies (which may not be to far off for pvp).
play 1v1’s against other players that are good (or seem good to you) to know if you’re good in 1v1’s.
Play in a team and see how you do against other good teams to know if you’re good at teamplay/strategy/teamfights.
quite simple actually. ^^’

So rangers take skill and no good mmo players play this game anymore.
So uhh what mmo they all playing
you do well in matches with known good players from good teams. That’s the only way, mmr does work so you could be winning a lot but beating bad players or lossing a lot but vs very top of the mmr scale.
I don’t care really, I just try to do my best and have fun.
When you reach first place on the scoreboard in spvp matches.
That’s how you know you are a good player.
- You see someone capping a point alone? Join him up. You NEED those extra points.
- You see an enemy on the ground that is about 0,5 seconds away to be stomped?
Waste all your Cooldowns to reach him just in time to land that autoattack that’s gonna secure you those +5 points. Then write in chat #WORTH
- Are you in Nifhel? Be sure to kill the mobs when nobody is around. You are gonna get those sweet +25 points and be way ahead your teammates! But be swift about it! Or you are gonna miss those 2-3 man decapping/capping points.
That’s what pro players like me do.
Sadly, I can’t help but partially agree with atreyu, if your playing solo. Game’s a little broken. You scale up better if you loose and get first place than if you win and get last. Its just the way the game is set up. Of course, this doesn’t really make you a good player. It just helps move you higher

How about making them only visible to the owners…?
So rangers take skill,
Reading comprehension, no where did I say it takes skill to play ranger. They are just at a constant disadvantage in PvP. Ranger vs any other class should be the other class as victor just taking into account class mechanics. This is the state we are in currently. People actually lose to Rangers on Mesmer, Thief, Guardian, etc because they suck hard core. It is both sad and funny. (Now please reply with some outrageous insanely specific situation to counter that).

It is fairly obvious considering there are no real tournaments for this game. The past two have been utter jokes and have received more attention than they should have.
For starters, league of legends has a kitten ton more pvpers, where some are actually quite skilled, and have actual tournaments. Hell, even Path of Exile does it better and they are full on Free to Play.
maybe you would like to say this “I go far alone plz don’t follow me”
Hope this helps,

Analyse yourself like I do!
I’m not a good pvp player far from it! I did something like this an other day:
-we capped mid so after a 10 sec (why so long FFS?) I headed to far to help out our pusher against a warrior
-on the way there I realised a thief is heading to far aswell.
-I kept running towards far
-thief got there and they finished our teammate before I arrived.
-against 2v1 I had no chance so I aimed back towards mid
-mid is also attacked and our bunker used all of his CD’s because it’s a 3v2
-I joined the fight but because we were overwhelmed at the start we lost mid aswell…
-I presented a double-facepalm how idiot I am
This is a good example how bad 10 seconds wrong rotation can be.
If you do not do this EVER AGAIN it doesn’t necessarily means you are good… It means you’re getting better!
Sportmanship,most of all. Respect.
Between a master and apprentice, i would love to see the differences.
