new decay system is in
oh holy crap, it is @@ wow, some big changes there
Oh wow. Hmm when a dev gets a chance it would be nice to hear the info on this—is it permanent or just harsher? For example I haven’t played a solo queue for three days and did lose some ranks. If it’s permanent, that’s pretty strict! I’d guess we would need to play every day to avoid rank loss?
We have increased the rate at which someone decays on the leaderboard. We were hoping to observe the change for a few days before making any sort of announcement, but you guys are too clever for that.
Justin has also changed the decay to update every hour, rather than once a day, so you should see movement happen a bit more often.
Let us know what you think!

i just went from #9 to 180something. Gonna get my rank 1 back sometime soon before reset.

Wait… every hour? So like if I don’t play for an hour, I’ll start decaying? Or you mean like if I don’t play for a week (or whatever the real minimum interval for decay to start is), the exact hour that 1 week since I last played hits, the decay will start?

Yes, after two hours it will start to decay but the decay is so low that you shouldn’t see any changes in such a short amount of time. It also ramps up the longer it’s been since the last time you played.

Great! If its too fast it can be changed but remember some people are never happy. The decay needs to be much steeper then it was. I am so happy with this and the matchmaking changes and leaderboard reset I really thought we weren’t going to see these changes until December or January. I was this close to taking the game off my hard drive.

Fair enough, cool system! That’s exactly what I’ve been wanting. Problems with the leaderboard decay turned off a lot of players, and fixing it will be a HUGE help to the people that were disappointed with it. Awesome work, Justin!
Setting an alarm clock to go off every 2 hours will be troublesome, but hey, you do what you gotta do Sleep is for the weak!

Heheh went from 98%-89% during the past 10 months or so, after patch I am 29% :P Guess that’s what you get if you haven’t played any tourneys since January. Good to see this is finally working as intended.
What is the point of the accelerated decay system if it still disappears with the next game played (See NA solo queue rank 1)?
Obviously a great start, but the other half has always been the real problem.
Wow, yeah, Incubating Baby.3279 just gained 4802 ranks to become rank 1 after winning 1 game. LOL
went from 600 soemthing to 329 huehuehue xD
Now just make it permanent and everyone is happy.

I don’t understand their philosophy on decay disappearing after you play a game. It makes no sense.
These changes to decay aren’t exactly a ‘new system’ – we’ve just increased the speed and severity that someone loses ranking. Like I mentioned in a previous post, we’re looking to overhaul quite a few things in the New Year, and this system is on our list.
For the time being, if players are logging in to maintain their ranking because they’re decaying at a faster rate – then in a sense the leaderboard decay is working. Players who have afk’d for months will begin to drop down in the list. With the changes to MMR and roster randomization players will be far less likely to play in stacked games when they do come back to maintain their position.

So it’s some kind of exponential decay?

We’re going to be changing this, but you’ll have to wait for the details. :/

The original problem with decay wasn’t the rate at which you decayed but rather that it was an imaginary decay.
People would decay from not playing, then play a game 3 months later and go back to the spot at which they were. So you’d see people going up the board from losses.
It makes no sense to have imaginary decay. If someone decays from inactivity, they should stay where they are if they come back, not go back to where they were before they started decaying.
THIS IS PERFECT!!!!!
We’re going to be changing this, but you’ll have to wait for the details. :/
That’s fine. This is better than it was before, so I’m happy, especially if the system is getting overhauled soon anyway.

Working as intended, being rewarded for a loss. Didn´t expect anything else. I´m quite sure this has something to do with decay too.

I will enjoy to rise 200ranks on my next match^^
Just a pure math Q:
In perfect theory, if matchmaking put you against EQUAL opponents , would everyone have/be very close to a 50/50 win ratio in the long run ?
Just by looking at 1st page EU boards , you see the players with far more games played are closer to 60% , while the 70-80% have far less , mostly under 100x games total.
If so, I think we will very appreciate the increased decay , to keep poeple playing CONSTANTLY and not sitting on a “small sample lucky start” .
Just 1 more…. Should there be an advantage to some1 playing 4x games a daz (2-2) vs. 2x games a day (1-1) , simply because he played more ? I mean playing “should” be encouraged , though only a tiny bit ?
make it permanent and we’ll have a good PvP experience.
Horrible balance still, but at least we’re getting there.
Great work guys, i’m proud of you ( but make it permanent !!!)

No, even assuming a very large population with abundant skill range coverage, a portion of the difference comes from a player raising/lowering their rating from the default starting position. It takes a while for your MMR to settle.

Now just please get a proper balance (pre pax would be good), i’m queueing the whole night and even fights are closer its still all about hambow warriors and necromansers….
Oh and remove Skyhammer, most unbalanced map in a “pvp” game i’ve seen in a while.
Decay should just be based on matches/7~ days.
If you don’t hit a quota (off the top of my head, 20~ matches) you start decaying for each mach under that quota.
The major issue in the old system only was that people would play 1~ match occasionally to counter decay… they’re sitting on top of the leaderboard as a 10-1.
You beat that issue, but completely reversed the problem…
With decay starting after a few hours and progressively building, that means the leaderboards would lean more towards ‘how consistently you play’ instead of the original intention of ‘how good you are’.
God forbid you can’t log on for a weekend since you have an actual life… well, with this sort of deal you lose a few dozen (if not hundred) ranks… that’s silly.
You didn’t get worse than those people, you weren’t playing the game way too little… you just don’t live in your mothers basement so have everything handed to you on a silver platter.
Fight the issue, not some random one that doesn’t exist. Force so much gameplay each reasonable time period (a week or two is good) for people to maintain leaderboard statuses…
That is practical.
Anyone who wants to take the game seriously can manage that.
They can’t manage logging in each day or seeing their rank (their online show of skill) get artificially beaten up.
That is frustrating.
Don’t do something crazy that vears rank away from how well the person plays.
(unless you’re fine with leaderboards remaining the joke they have always been)

Ye, it is way better now tbh. Decay has been ramped up significantly and is now probably appropiate. So this on its own will mean the afkers need to play way more often to refresh their ranks. Which means they are more likely to donate wins.

i was around rank 300 in solo queue leaderboards before the patch , now after patch i have 69%. Back to battlefield 4 , maybe i will come back when leaderboards get a reset , skyhammer glory farmers a rollback , and the new pvp reward system is out. But i doubt that there will be enought pvp players left then.
i love the system, now u have to play to be best, afkers and sync gonna have some ranking drops i can feel it

that also depends on what class you play or let’s say your luck with team-setups and maps (skyhammer cough). Still I like the decay.
Well I went down from r60 to r90. I played yesterday too…

But with decay starting after two hours and progressively building, that means the leaderboards would lean more towards ‘how consistently you play’ instead of the original intention of ‘how good you are’.
Unfortunately, I have to agree. It is really frustrating to have your rank dropping just because you don’t have time for the game. Lowering the rank after 1 month or 2 weeks of afk’ing sounds more fair to me, but 2 hours… this is too harsh.

How will solo queue decay work? I assume that a players rank/rating will continue to fall the longer they have not played. However, does it bottom out eventually?
If not, how does one handle the event horizon? That is: you fall down into a rating so low that, no matter your skill level, you cannot escape for you are only 1 player on a team of 5.
Decay should just be based on matches/7~ days.

The decay after a few hours is basically non-existant.
And man get a grip. If you dont have time to play your rank will drop. Get over it. Why should you keep your position blocking the way for those who ACTUALLY play the game.

i think you guys are to slow.
wake up.
well finally im out of top 50 after staying ~2 month afk (in the 2 month i droped from 23 to 43 and now to 454, funny)
good job, you guys do so a fast and great job, you are the best!
now lets leave beta status, maybe in the next month or year, bring back a bit skill into the game?
or no, lets nerf and buff the same skills on professions all the time, what a joke of balance team.
you guys buff things to nerf them later again, just sad.

Just after the patch I dropped from the comfy 666th place to 95% without playing a single game. It’s true that I havent played team arena for a couple of weeks now but srsly? I want my hideous 666th place back :P

The issue is that if someone doesn’t play for a good amount of time, his rating will be kept pretty stable.
If someone doesn’t play for 3-4 months, all people around him ratings’ will drop due to playing, so that when the “afker” goes back to play, with a single game, even if he loses, his “stable” rating will be so much higher than other people around him that he will RIDICOLOUSLY jump up the ladder.
We had this issue with Kultas ( who didn’t play for months, played a single game THAT HE LOST and jumped to RANK 1, and he even made a thread about it LOL).
This needs to be avoided, decay is will not be appropriate till it’s permanent.
And man get a grip. If you dont have time to play your rank will drop. Get over it. Why should you keep your position blocking the way for those who ACTUALLY play the game.
You may feel fine since you do have such a casual life that you can spend time every day playing a game, but that is far from the average person.
People who can are hardcore PvP’ers.
GW2 has like a no hardcore PvP’ers.
That’s a terribly made concept if I’ve ever heard of one.
Leaderboards, at least good ones, are based on skill, not whether you have such a lack of commitments that you can spend each day playing a game… a game that next to no one takes seriously.

Leaderboard rankings, they exist so someone can see how good they are compared to others.
So because that, anyone who takes the time to go legitimate look at their ranking, they show at least a drop of care about ranks.
And so, as you say, anyone who has a life yet shows care about rankings… they don’t have a grip on reality…
So your saying the vast majority of a playerbase can’t take a serious look at their game’s leaderboards or make suggestions that will only improve quality in every way… (since their not demented).
Nice.

Did people forget that they said they were going to reset the leaderboards in two weeks if the new decay system works as intended?
I like the new system. It’s definitely an improvement. I’d definitely like to see people with 13-20 total games either drop rank or play more games quickly.
Please do not use a time limit of 2 hours to determine decay…
People that go on vacation or have a busy week will get decay for no reason even if they worked their kitten off to get top50 the past 3 weeks(for example). They didn’t intentionally stopped playing.
Use a fixed ratio(games/day, games/week or games/month, hell even games/year) to determine whether decay occurs or not.
I think the best would be to update a games/month (average number of games played per month, taking into account all the previous months) ratio every 2 hours.
This also benefits people that have played a lot and were on “top” for a long time. Their average ratio will be higher and thus they will be able to take breaks without getting decay.
Make sure people can not exploit this by finding out the ratio and playing a fixed ammount of games/day to maintain rank… I figure this can be difficult but i’m not the one writing the code
I realize it’s more complicated than this but these are just my thoughts…
Mind that switching it to an hourly basis isn’t making you decay faster, (we did increase decay) it’s improving the visibility/perception of decay actively working.

Aside from the decay issue not being permanent.
I find it odd that players can win 9 and 10 matches and be ranked in the top 50 especially after all this time has past and the leaderboard established. Going forward Justin don’t you think that rating gains and losses should be weighted and against overall individual games played or scale with the entire community games played to get a true base of skill and a proper leaderboard ranking?

Don’t be so ridiculous. You are only as good as you PROVE YOU ARE. If you didn’t play for a while then you aren’t anymore proving your talent. So you don’t deserve the spot. Decay is meant to simulate a loss of skill by not playing AND to give a sense of progression to those who actually play the game. Previously it was just an afk kitten contest between people who were good 6 months ago.
