sPvP Class Tier List: - Updated 6/30
MithranArkanere.8957:
They need to bring back GW1’s usage of conditions.
Players must be smart on when they apply the, and when they remove them, not just spam away and run around while the conditions do their thing.
The current rate condition spam not only dumbs down the game, but also makes inviable direct damage builds compared to DPS condition spam ones.
gw1 conditions were way worse than here… the only one hard to get was daze and that was stupid OP vs any caster. Same for blind vs melee. But ranger/ele/necro and some derv build had very powerful spammable conditions. Most monk were built around cleansing, even their elite skill was a cleanse on 1 mon out of the 2 most teams took, and sometimes two more cleanse. Another popular build was that skill that transfer all conditions from teammate to monk then heal the monk, also could transfer to enemy. I forgot most of the skill names it’ been a while.
The only thing that made conditions bearable in gw1 was the fact there was healers. They could cleanse and heal the player and even then it was a lot of pressure. Here you get conditions if can’t drop combat you die :\
Oh yah and that mortal strike debuff in gw1 was so OP. No team played without it, forgot what it was called, but reduce healing and max hp by 20%… and all the hex spam in that game with hexs way more powerful than in this game. You have nostalgia or something to think gw1 conditions were better. Remember glass arrow ranger !
Wounded or something like that.
As should be understood, this analysis refers to the current best builds for these classes, and is from the perspective of overall efficacy in high-level play.
S Tier
=Ranger The amount of burning and protection offered in a team fight as well as having good 1v1 dueling capability, ease of play, and a powerful res utility make Spirit Ranger the current king of the hill. A slight reduction to burn duration, or small increase to spirit passive cool downs may be all that’s needed.
=Necromancer Damage was nerfed slightly in the last patch, but sustainability was increased to compensate. I think Necro is moving in the right direction, perhaps reverting the fear duration on Doom and lowering the duration slightly on Spectral Wall would make the amount of CC and Terror damage more reasonable, since at the moment Necro does a little too much damage for the amount of sustain and CC they were given.
A Tier
+Thief Their great map mobility along with their ability to pressure Necros make them a great meta choice. Overall, I think Thief is at a good power level, the main thing I believe needs adjusting is Shadow Trap. Reducing the duration on it to 75 or 90 seconds would restrict their map mobility a little bit while not killing it entirely.
=Guardian Despite many changes to other classes, Guardians have remained a steady part of the meta, since they offer aoe stability, protection, and cleanses in a team fight while being able to stay on a node for long periods of time. In order for other classes to have viable bunker builds, more access to those 3 aforementioned abilities need to be given to those classes so that they can compete with Guardian.
=Engineer Engis fit pretty well into a condition meta, and add good point pressure to a comp. Having the flexibility of pushing far node when needed, or adding an additional res utility to a team fight is a very powerful option to have.
B Tier
+Warrior The classic underdog class. This may be an unpopular opinion, but I believe with the latest patch, certain Warrior builds are becoming tournament-viable. In particular, CC builds featuring Mace main-hand can lock down and kill glass cannons that lack access to Stability. With proper boon removal support (especially from Mesmer once burst becomes more viable), Warriors should become more prevalent in high-level play, especially if juicy CC targets like Necro and Engi remain as part of the meta.
=Elementalist I believe Elementalist is in a reasonable place balance-wise currently, however, they do not do enough compared to Spirit Ranger and Necromancer in this condition meta that currently exists. Once the currently dominant condi builds are toned down a little bit and burst becomes more viable again, Ele will once again return to A Tier.
=Mesmer Mesmers were key players on burst teams due to their excellent team utility, good burst, ability to stack vulnerability on targets, and ability to strip protection and stability. Due to conditions becoming strong, mesmers have struggled to fit in, but if conditions are toned down a bit, Mesmers will quickly return to A Tier.

I don’t mean their effects, but their frequency.
Particularly for DPS conditions.
In GW1 you could time your condition removals to take the conditions from you at the right time to minimize the effect.
In GW2, it’s pointless when you use condition removals, they will just reapply them instantly as if you didn’t do anything. Either you can spam continuous condition removals like elementalists and guardians, or stay the hell away with ranged weapons and hiding behind minions and invisibilities before they can even deal the condition on the first place, or you’ll just see your HP go down at amazing speeds while your 40s condition removal reloads.

The difference is gw1 didn’t have split stats; gw2 does.
If a necro or engineer can’t sustain conditions, the power portions of their damage are negligible.
My spirit ranger’s autoattack on sword is a measly 180 damage noncrit (the pet’s noncrit single target auto is about 650). My necro’s autos on scepter on rabid aren’t breaking 300 damage noncrit.
Condi builds just do pathetic damage if they can’t sustain conditions.
The problem is how much conditions you can burst. If they toned down condi removal so you didn’t need necro/engi level of condi spam to deal with ridiculous ele or guardian condi cleansing spam (which erases thieves and mesmer and guardian and about any condition spec that can’t layer 3-4 conditions at a time consistently), they could then adjust the output of the fewer condi stacks.
Also, necro damage seems absurd, but if you get caught in a 1v1 with a warrior landing constant 3k autos on your 1700 toughness self you need the DPS to win the race before he kills you considering berserker stance and signet of rage with lyssa and cleansing ire.
TIER S: Spirit Ranger by far!
S Tier:
Ranger
Necromancer
A Tier:
Guardian =
Engineer =
Thief =
Warrior -
B Tier:
Messmer =
Elementalist =
www.twitch.tv/mufasapk
S Tier:
Necromancer:
Some MINOR nerfing the their damage output and as compensation som new defensive options and i think they will end up really well
Guardian:
This game is reliant on a bunker, Guardian is unchallanged in this and the only class that i think is a absolute must in any composition. if one team lacks a guardian, regardless of the rest of the compositions, as long as the skill lvls are the same that team will always loose. Tone down the invunerables and defensive just a small tad and suddenly other classes can go bunker aswell! Ele bunker, warrior bunker would become options!
A Tier:
Thief:
I think thiefs are in a good place, S/D is prehaps alittle over the top but i still think people will learn to adjust to them and edventually they will not feel as powerful. I think they should change the boon steal abit and make it unspammable. So the choice of stealing boons would be conscious decision with a penalty only worth doing if the boons are correct and with decent time left!
Ranger:
Strong right now and in my oppinion the most balanced class of them all. Work on making the pets ai more reliable and prehaps some new weapons rather than changing the current! the spirit build is good now but even so has its weaknesses to aoe and so forth so not op !
Engineer:
The elite is without a doubt op. this has been my oppinion since first beta.. but all in all nothing mayor needed at the moment! prehaps some minor buffs to power builds would spice things up!
B Tier:
Warriors:
Stunlock and good conditions removal, awesome ress elite! Even so there is just something missing. I think a small increase in mobility would go a long way. But really i hate this kittening class and i hate fighting them and i really hope they wont get any buffs. but in the interest of being honest and useful, yeah they need something new and spicy!
Mesmer:
Condition removal needed. Prehaps mindwrack removes 1 condition per illusion shattered ? and make the Arcane thievery instant!! Also make the illusions abit more lifelike! make them dodge and run arround so the mesmer can blend in more! thats the hole idea for mesmer illusions right?
S Tier:
Elementalist:
Cannot fit any role even close to aswell as other class atm. the S/D ele burst is very hard to pull off with the phoenix + teleport etc. The new Air trait where amazing and a good step in the right direction!
First change id make is change place for boon duration and healing power! Then move down to first tier Elemental surge! New elite severly needed! give the elemental elites a activation skill!!! If you could activate the healing from the Ice elemental consciously say with a 2 sec cast time and buff the attacks of the other spirits this elite would be amazing! Really fun and really useful and not at all op! right now a good option for tpvp elite is strongly needed!
Focus and staff needs tons of work i’m not even gonna…
On my thief i beat everyone silly..
On my mesmer i confuze the crap out of people and hardly die
On my guardian bunker my way trough everything
On my ele.. hahaha who plays ele anyway..but can still burst anything down in seconds.
On ranger #1 and let the spirits do their work.
On my warrior.. nvm dont play one [bc its one of the dumb classes like thief and guardian]
On my engineer [wish i played one they simply rock]
On my necro it takes the most effort the most skill and the most knowledge to play and to stay alive.
So how is necro always on #1? because bursts dont bring their cleanse vs people who play broken necro since day 1. thats why.
l2p vs necro.
E.A.D.
I’m only talking about TPvP for the last 4 weeks:
Tier S:
=Necromancer
Tier A
+Ranger
+Thief
=Warrior
=Guardian (Slightly higher than Elementalist)
=Engineer
Tier B
=Elementalist
Tier C
=Mesmer
Explaination:
Necro: Excells in Teamfights aswell as super strong in 1v1
Ranger: Very strong 1v1 class that also supports a LOT in teamfights (Rez, Burning uptime)
Thief: Very strong 1v1, lots of condiremoval, high toughness →hard to kill
Engineer: Very strong 1v1, team support OK
Guard: Still necessary imo but not as strong as it used to be – pressure of condis with the condi meta incredible high
Warrior: not easy to kill anymore – with stun-builds very strong in support
Ele: Still very high burst, survivability low
Mesmer: pretty much everything counters mesmer now
Why is 1v1 important – although we play a teambased game: If you can engage a 1v1 on a side-node with a strong class – the opponents have two possibilities:
- either get help – that will most likely win you the mid fight as you outnumber them there
- fight and probably loose the 1v1 – you loose the side-node.
Pretty much all high end comp are currently:
Necro, Ranger, Guard, Engi, Thief… sometimes they swap 1 class with something else – e.g. warri, ele.
Didn’t see any mesmer in TPvP in a looooong time
Engineer since BWE 1
there is not bad team running around with
power necro, cc warrior, bunker guardian, dmg guardian and backstab thief and they have win vs “master pro teams” like car crash which play meta setup.
so i think this ppls are good players, because they dont play the meta and show us its not a must do to win all matches…
so in my mind anet should patch careful in next patch on atm working professions and look on not used weapons and traits to push them for new working builds.
also the mesmer just need something little buff to bring him back.
i whant more nice changes like the extra animation on necro staff fear, because its so important to watch enemy animations, there its bad joke when some attacks have so huge different effect, but same animation.
im happy to finaly see when i have to dodge necro fear.
its not rly a nerf but bring more balance in high skilled pvp when fight vs a necro
at least, because i also play spirit ranger…
stop to put it on s-tier… -.-
its so beatable! if u put ranger on s-tier then go with engin, warrior, s/d thief and necro also on s-tier.
just learn to destroy sometimes “minions” first…
everyone know it vs mm necro, why u stop use brain vs ranger.
spirit ranger is a a-tier profession,
its not so lame and easy to 1vs1 other professions as spirit ranger.
Spirit Ranger Yilvina Darnus
Bunker Guardian Morwenna Darnus
This is from a Tpvp perspective:
Tier S
-Spirit Ranger-The fact is, the spirit ranger is slightly over-powered. I believe that a small adjustment to spirits would set rangers at a perfect pace with the other classes. They still need major buffs in other areas such as longbow damage and pet mechanics. If anything else, by de-buffing spirits slightly, and buffing pets, the ranger would have far more versatility in tournament and be less overpowered.
Tier A
+Necromancer- The balances made the Necromancer far more balanced with damage. I believe it is still slightly too powerful, but I would also argue that any more nerfing could kill the effectiveness of the aoe. Perhaps, adding more survivability and decreasing the condition damage slightly would benefit the class. However, as it stands, the general purpose of a Necromancer has been realized, making it seemingly more overpowered than it actually is. The truth is aoe will always kill an entire team if they are not careful. Either way, they need a small de-buff to make them at mid level.
=Guardian- Guardian is in a great place. I have no suggestions to make it better. I think it has some great offensive and defensive builds at this point in time. So, no need for adjustments.
=Thief- I know nearly nothing about thieves, but they seem to have an effective kill-you-in-several-hits build that is working wonders in 1v1. Although, I did not check their update. I am under the impression they do not have enough condition removal, but I could be wrong.
=Engineer – They are still very effective grenade bombers and with the right player can kill you. They can also be great bunkers against Necromancers. I don’t have any issues with their current meta. They play effectively and are great contributions to a team.
-Warrior – The warrior has finally reached near normal status in comparison to other classes. Although it lacks in burst damage, the longbow and stun builds are relatively effective in tournament matches. The stun lock build can really destroy enemies. I still think they need some boosts to their healing capabilities, but otherwise they are in a good place.
Tier B
=Mesmer- Although mesmers still have great burst damage, in a team fight, they don’t contribute as much conditions as the Necromancer and Ranger due to their primarily burst damage, they are at the lower tier. They need more condition removal or if Necromancer and Spirit Ranger are given slight debuffs, the Mesmer would easily rise again to the top.
=Elementalist-I know very littly about the ele at this time, but it seems to be doing well and its condition removal makes it an always present force in team fights. However, its usefuleness is the real problem. It doesn’t have a real set spot in team composition at the moment, making it a less likely choice.

Thing is – in the past you only had good 1v1 classes that excelled in 1v1 only.
You cannot say Ranger is not strong in 1v1s.
Imo a strong 1v1 build shouldn’t have huge team support. Either you spec for the one or the other.
With the spirits though it offers great team support – and with the rez it’s huge support!
Same for the Necro – with necro you can kill almost every class in 1v1 if played strong – also it’s HUGE team support at the same time.
Why would you pick anything else than a profession/build that can do everything.
Engineer since BWE 1
I think Ostricheggs hit the nail on the head regarding the problem with Spirit Rangers. However, I see thieves right now at nearly the same level as Spirit Rangers. Let’s look at what they bring to the table in tPvP, besides their terrific damage output:
Group Stealth allows a team to invisi-zerg assist train down a player, often times giving a team and instant +1 player advantage. There is no counter play to stealth.
Stealth + condition cleanse gives thieves the most survivability in the game, bar none. As a result they are practically impossible to assist train down. There is no counter play to this.
Shadow trap, et. al, give thieves so much mobility that, on most maps, they can back cover a point while simultaneously pressuring another. They can almost literally be in two places at once. If they aren’t back covering, they can back cap (or far cap) just as easily. The counter play to this is to split your team 3 ways, which not very many team comps can support.
Shadow Refuge resurrect is more powerful than Signet of Inspiration and Signet of Undeath, combined. 1/4 second cast time and a 60 second cooldown for a near guaranteed resurrect. Without exaggeration, it is 10-20 times easier to pull of a Shadow Refuge resurrect than a Signet of Undeath resurrect or a Signet of Inspiration rally. The only way to counter it is to use a non-targetttable AoE knockback/pull before the stealth stacks more than 2 ticks. Let’s not forget it also heals and can proc Regeneration.
(edited by Thedenofsin.7340)
Stealth has counter plays. AOE fields that activate ( hmm necro… hmmmmm). Stealth yourself. Be aware, and play smart.
Crysis, Lil Damage, Ovi, Jindavikk, Guard
Causing cancer all day.

whats with engin then?
its strong like hell on 1vs1 and rly useful on team.
stop guys on rezing or stomping, make downed ppls invis and rez with elixier or use ulti on point Oo
and when side point is open from the spirit ranger, the bomb engi go invis because use this stupid jumpfinisher to the enemy homepoint.
rly funny to go back as ranger and fight the engi then at ur decaped homepoint with a win chance 50/50… and when u win him he jump invis away.
got some fights vs teldo and it feels like a troll when i was winning and he just jumped away for come back again with the much knocks, it ends on a all time decpaed closepoint.
and dont forget engi won 2vs1 on pax.
teldo is rly good, but not unbeatable.
there is spirit ranger less “imba” in teamfight or 1vs1
and dont forget how fast the spirits go down…
rez ghost is nice when u can use it good, but its balanced and on huge coodlown
AND u can interrupt it.
also its buged atm when u cast his active effect to fast after u summoned him
the hate is like always without much reason on ranger and on some other professions atm.
history of ranger, trapper ranger balanced all whined, bm ranger balacned all whined, now same on spirit ranger :P
lets wait for longbow ranger whine.
sure its strong on 1vs1, but u have to play also good as ranger when u whant win vs good players
Spirit Ranger Yilvina Darnus
Bunker Guardian Morwenna Darnus
I think both S/D thieves and burst elementalists are overrated. I would put them on A class at maximum, and probably even B for ele. S/D thieves can evade a lot, but they dont actually do that much dmg (have no burst w/ basktab/heartseeker), and are very initiative hungry, which makes you spend a lot of traits and utilities just to get your initiative back. They have some condition removal but it also costs initiative, which they need to evade all the time. So to kill one just have someone put an AoE condition, stand there and burst him back. He will either try to cleanse, evade or flee. I dont know if im just bad at it, but i still prefer my d/p thief. AoE blinds seems more useful on group fights, has better burst and i can run away easier to heal. S/D is really just good to counter guardians and bunkers or people who never had a fight with a S/D thief before.
I also i dont think burst elementalist are that awesome. I dont think anything in the games dies as fast as an immobilized burst elementalist ( no vitality, no toughness, no heals ). Since elementalist’s mobility isnt as it used to, you also cant disengage that well ( not like a burst thief for example ), specially with scepter, which seems what most seems to use. They are a waste of a character slot in my opinion. Just switch it for a guardian, spirit ranger, a thief, a engi or another necro.

Would be happy for someone to take this over, I’ve decided to take a break from the game for a bit.
Spirit Rangers are really annoying. I usually don’t like those classes with tons of pets like Mesmers and Necros… but I got used to it. Even that you sometimes have 2 Necros with full set of minions + rock dog… I got used to it.
But now the ranger with his full set of spirits and his pet(+maybe a rock dog) is really annoying. Especially if you play a lot of single targeted skills and it gets harder to target with all the blinds and invisibility(if other classes are nearby to give more stealth and stuff) cause you lose target and need to retarget.
I hope ArenaNet is going to to something to make Spirits less interesting(or will they buff other stuff like turrets and spirit weapons from guardians next so every class runs with 4-5 pets minimum?)
Also the percentage for buffs is high… when I selected the ranger and saw his buffs I was shocked to see 70% – this is probably traited? I remember this much lower… they must really have buffed it too much. With all that buffs from spirits and then stuff from their pet… some locations they are really impossible to kill with their long range and slowing you and doing a lot of damage and staying alive.
I dont know why spirit ranger is on top of so many lists. It lacks a stunbreaker, and spirits get pooped on by aoe. And those buffs, dont they have a internal cooldown of 10 s, and aren’t they single target? (I’m sorry if i’m wrong about this)
Sure this makes this build better for 1v1’s, giving the ranger more chance of getting the buff. The only problem might be the elite and call lightning. Elite isnt that great either, it does have a long cooldown, and is easily killed by aoe….
Call lightning deserves a nerf, that’s all

I tried to make a post but it didn’t go through for some reason, and it didn’t save, so I’ll keep it short. Assuming class tiers mean best build in it’s place in a team:
S:
-Necromancer
(Really good at lots of everything at once)
A:
+Warrior
(Huge buffs to healing and condi removal made them hard to focus while doing enormous damage)
+Ranger – Spirits
(Spirits still bring strong team support and really good damage from the ranger)
=Guardian – Bunker
(Guardian strong as ever, although they may have “sitting in a circle” competition from Warrior now)
=Engineer – Kit/condi
(Just feels ever so slightly redundant to ranger with a bit more teamfight power)
=Thief – s/d or d/p – both ok
B
=Mesmer
(Portal will never be bad, no matter how easily the class falls under millions of conditions)
=Elementalist
(Feels a bit redundant to other tanky dps builds like most warriors but good eles like Blinx and cmc almost make it feel like S+)
really bad engineer
(edited by Writetyper.1985)
S:
Warrior just insane stuns, defense, condi removing and damage all in one build.
A:
Necro (if no stun wars are around C- if a stun war is about)
Guardian (always strong its have never been average or weak)
Ranger (too good for the effort it takes to play)
B:
Thief
Mesmer = Engineer = Elementalist
S: Warrior, Necro
A: Ranger, Guardian
B: Thief, Engineer, Mesmer
C: Ele
but they’re a lot stronger
than they will be next year!
S:
Warrior: Can tank extremely well while being able to deal insane damage. Don’t even attempt to fight it w/out a stun break or u will die in 1 stun chain.
Necromancer: Can survive way to long with the amount of damage that it can unload at once. One fear and you can be dead before it ends.
Ranger: Spirits are a bit op for classes w/out strong aoe’s. Ranger is encouraged to play the easiest build for greatest reward. Should be opposite.
Thief: S/D needs some fixes. Impossible to kill a good one as it can evade constantly and run off if it needs to.
A:
Guardian is in a great spot right now. Balanced if they go zerker or bunker. Can deal decent damage and other classes should be about at this level.
Mesmer is in a great spot as well. They can do decent damage, but the traits are all over the place. You can not focus on one build type, because of the traits being in lines they shouldn’t be such as schatters in the condition damage line.
Engineer is in a great spot right now as well. They have access to decent aoe damage and they can bunker if need be.
B.
Elementalist is a joke in pvp right now. Other classes outshine them in every way.

it would be cool if you could just bring data from Defektive OP and pull it in yours, in order to see how the meta shifts ( this was Defektive aim anyway, other than having the Tier list accurate)
As far as it goes for me:

B tier

I like this thread, because you can clearly see that the ‘tier rank’ of professions are constantly evolving and changing. I.e, you will soon see warrior rise quickly to near the top.
You will always have flavour of the month classes, and I gurantee that even if there was a game where the classes were scientifically proven to be 100% balanced, everyone would still talk about OP and UP classes.
We should of course try to get the classes balanced as much as possible, and have a meta where everyone is treated fairly, but no one is ever going to say all the classes are balanced equally

Merged? Are you serious? Defektive isn’t around to edit the original post thus making it pointless.
Nobody post in this thread for a few days, let it drop a few pages, hopefully the mods won’t see it when I make another one.
really bad engineer
S:
None
(potentially Engy after new patch)
A:
+ Necro
+ Engy
= Guardian
= Warrior (lbow/hammer)
= S/D & Sbow or D/P acrobatics thief
= Mesmer (Staff shatter)
= Spirit ranger
B:
+ Ele (S/D or S/F burst, doesn’t fit current meta)
+ BM ranger
+ M&SH/GS warr
+ Interrupt mesmer, Phantasm mesmer
= Stealth focused burst thief, S/P trickery thief
= Powerneccy
= DPS guard
= D/D ele
= Traps ranger
Ok, I agree with Writetyper that we need to let this thread die down and I can make another and hopefully it won’t get merged.
Old Man Burr (War), Bad Hat Ben (Engi), Manly Manny Manson (Guard)
Lol Ele was on top now its down
A lot of the good elementalists rage quit and the others don’t really know how to play. Elem is the hardest profession in the game to play due to its spamming.
Needs a fix.

Does DaPhoniex still play her ele?
