Guards is an instant cast, so by the time you see the animation, you will be knocked back—you have to bait it out or have stability or a stun breaker.

No it’s not. You can reliably react to the animation.

Oh, so there is a window? Okay, I’ll update it.

Well, it’s not instant. I was pretty sure you can react to it, but I just tested it to confirm.

It’s a subtle animation where your body starts moving. That and a good way to foresee it coming is when the person stops their auto attack and you see them start moving.

All of the downed state CCs can be reacted to, but IMO the ranger’s is the hardest to react to (feels like it’s the quickest to me and/or hardest to discern).

One thing I wanted to add but forgot to mention was that the Warrior’s and Engi’s CC counts as a projectile, and thus you can use skills that block/reflect projectiles to prevent the CC and finish the stomp. For example you can use Mesmer’s Feedback, which is an instant cast and thus can be cast mid-stomp, to prevent their CC from interrupting your stomp.

Also since it is a projectile with normal projectile mechanics, you can use things like terrain, NPCs, etc. to body block the CC/projectile to ensure the stomp. For example you can stand behind your Flesh Golem as a Necro and the CC will hit your Flesh Golem instead, allowing you to secure the stomp.

Common Misconception: Ranger F# skills
You can still use them when downed even though they are not in the GUI. So yes, you can interrupt with your #2 skill and then wolf fear and then command the wolf to knock down your opponent then switch pets to something else and so on and so forth. (OP imo)

As a Ranger I am downed by some players in one to two shots – I don’t find the downed abilities OP at all.

haha true true.

Why dont you use traits, gear and weapon??

Tip for you:
Ranger is OP and unkillable atm. Dont go PvP without Gear, Traits and Weapons.

To piggyback this, start your stomps at the downed players head. This way they will rotate toward you and will have to start their interrupt. Much easier to dodge through.

No. A bad or distracted ranger is still very easy to kill still even with a bunker build playing a ranger and not totally sucking still involves extra micromanagement and dealing with less than stellar pet AI so a chunk of your damage. Experienced rangers or good players are needed for a ranger to be “unkillable” in s/tpvp. Imo.

Edit: For the sake of being on topic I will add couple more.

1. When in a fight try to stay aware of certain buffs and time your defense or offense early. Example, you see someone pop a haste buff they are probably going to burst you so get defensive quick. (Always try to have 1 dodge left at least). On the other hand if you see retaliation or protection go up stall your burst a few more seconds (however small the burst may be).

2. After capping a point hide near the point for a few moments to either ambush or distract people who were waiting for you to leave the point and recap it.

Temple of the Silent Storm Buffs

Since it is the current map I figure this is appropriate.

Stillness spawns the first time at 11:30 and gives you double points from nodes you control.

Tranquility spawns at 8:30 and instantly gives you ALL 3 nodes.

Ferocity STACKS. If you get them both and then blast out 5 kills it can be a very big difference maker.

CC can be a huge factor in the group fight at Tranqility – Certain classes specc’d certain ways can CC an opponent off of the buff long enough for their team mate to complete the channel if they plan ahead and execute well. Think about how you might be able to do this. TIP – start on land and knockback, pull or fear your opponent into the water, then you can take advantage of your under water CC’s.

Edit: Stillness spawns again at 5:30 and 2:30
Tranquility spawns again at 2:30

Forgot to add some of my own tips:

Spectral walk+Wurm minion stomping
Similar to how thives can port in and out to avoid downed state interrupts, a necromancer can do the same by popping the wurm minion some way out of downed player’s reach, then begin the stomp, pop spectral walk, the wurm after, and return back to original location by activating spectral teleport right before the stomp hits.
Sadly, the trick is reserved for wvw and hotjoin alone, because they use utilities necromancers normally cannot bring in tpvp.

Using DS n3 as a stunbreaker, or spike preventer
Whenever you missed a dodge on an important CC, or have been CCed from a stealthed opponent, instantly DS fear the opponent about to spike/excuting a spike. Ineffective against stability-assisted spikes, however.
Occasionally also works on mesmers right before they wish to jump after spawning sword n3 clone, but I suppose the effect is limited to slow/bad players, because sword n3 is also a stunbreaker, which in effect makes CCing them proactively useless, and you cannot CC them reactionary because of invulnerability. ez mode ftl

I’m pretty sure those are intended mechanics. Its no different than using your pet while your stunned/cc’d. The players is downed, not the pet, so take advantage of that.

Now whether it’s op or not is a different story. That annoying wolf.

Recognizing Mesmer Sound Effects to avoid Blurred Frenzy
When a mesmer blinks, they have a distinct sound effect (hard to describe but if you have a mesmer you will know what I mean!) If you dodge right when you hear the sound effect, more likely than not, you’ll be evading a blurred frenzy (and the immobolize that comes with the blink).

if you wait to hear illusionary leap’s swap then you’ve already been immobilized

Rangers is also an instant cast (at least from my experience) so you need to bait it out or use stability or a stunbreaker.

Thieves, Eles, Mesmers do not have any cc in their downed state.

it doesn’t matter what direction you dodge

ranger’s thunderclap has an identical cast time and character animation to that of the guardian’s wave of light

thief and ele can CC with cripple and immobilize respectively

Thanks for the correction! Will update. And I’ll reword cc into interrupts for thieves/eles/mesmers. I might need to test out the mesmer thing however to be sure.

Combo Fields: Very underused, but could have great potential
If you want a full list of combos please click here: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Combo.

As a ranger, I often using healing spring and sword 1 for leap finisher heals and then GS 3 for another leap heal.

As a guardian I use symbol of wrath (GS 4) and then whirling wrath to get rid of conditions.

Try them out and coodrinate fields with your team to maximize combos!

The oldest combo field is the one that procs btw if combo fields overlap
I will test the limits of the combo field later today to see how many times you can use it per skill

Get rezzed by your thief friend

If you are with an ally who is playing a thief and you get downed, hold off from attacking enemies if possible. Thiefs usually bring Shadows Refuge which will stealth both of you so that you can get rezzed, but if you attack, this will break stealth and leave you open for a stomp.

Only one person can contribute towards capping a point.

In other words, stop following me when I backcap open points. >:|

It’s the personal points – and I have watched them go up – several people can get capping points, I am just not sure how many – there is a cut-off just like there is with the bosses if I am not mistaken.

The point I think he is trying to make here is not that you will not get points for double or triple capping just that it is bad play. Because during the time it takes to cap a point the other 1 or 2 players could be helping elsewhere. One person caps the point the other people leave to help elsewhere.

I haven’t played in a few months, but here are some of the general spvp tips and tpvp tips I learned over 1500+ hours of pvp in this game.

1. Engineer elixir tosses are considered projectiles and can be “blocked” by things like Sanctuary, Shield of absorption, or Wall of reflection. This includes Toss Elixir R so you can prevent the res utility.

2. Elementalists can swap attunements while channeling spells like churning earth or before a dragon’s tooth lands to be under the effect of fury when damage/crits are actually calculated. If you are playing as Scepter/Dagger, you can also swap to air attunement and use your 2+3 abilities to clear blinds that people may put on you to prevent a churning earth from hitting.

3. You can use any instant cast abilities while stomping and not be interrupted.

4. If you use the unblockable marks trait as a necromancer you can completely negate a guardian’s shelter heal if you time your fear marking to land between them activating it and the delay before the heal actually takes place.

5. Condition removal is treated as last in first out so if you are a condition based damage class it is often good to “Hide” the damaging conditions like burning/confusion/bleeds by stacking as many other effects on top of it as possible.

6. If you are fighting a Mesmer and you see a clone come running at you, either kill it or try to dodge. You can avoid the immob this way and severely hamper their shatter combos.

7. In a Tpvp setting, if you control 2 points it is often better to fight “off point” and try to keep the other team from being able to regroup fully. If you control only 1 of the 3 points, try to avoid situations where you are fighting away from the points.

8. In a Tpvp setting, Secondary objectives like the forest creatures or your treb on khylo should really be treated as secondary objectives. Only focus on these if you have a proper opening (if you just won a big team fight with 3-5 members of the other team off the map and accounted for or if you are a bit desperate and need the boost to try to get back into the game). Not doing this can often lead to improper time management for teams and having people in the wrong place to prevent counter attacks from the opposing teams. Also having forest creature kills stolen is a huge swing for the other team.

9. In a Tpvp setting, if you have voip try to get your entire team communicating who gets stomped from the other team and when so teammates can make decisions about roaming/pushing/secondary objectives. Keeping track of spawn timers and how many players are on the map and where is one of the biggest keys to improving at Tpvp. If you don’t have voip, try to keep track of the stomps that you can see for your own personal decision making.

10. In a Tpvp setting, understand your role within the team. Are you the bunker? Are you the back point defender? Are you a defensive roamer? Or are you an Offensive roamer? You should experiment with all of these play styles to find the one that suits you the most and then practice with it as much as you can. Over time your awareness towards your responsibilities, decision making, and comfort level should improve drastically.

Tip: Mesmers Feedback is amazing; use it

Mesmers have this amazing utility skill called Feedback. Most of us know that it blocks ranged attacks and is cast on targets. What some people don’t realize is that if your targets runs out of the bubble (most likely in sPvP) you can run inside and still get the benefit of reflecting projectiles. This is also a recommended combo field to generate Chaos Armor by leaping through it or giving your allies CA by way of blast finishers inside the bubble.

Not only does this utility help against ranged attacks and generate CA for you and/or allies, but it’s usefulness doesn’t end there. You can cast it on downed opponents for the following uses:

Thieves – Reflects all of their downed attacks which can be quite strong.
Warriors – Reflects their attacks AND their interrupt, making them easy stomps.
Engineers – Reflects their first interrupt (and I think down attacks) making them much easier to stomp.

When traited it can also be used to blind every class in an attempt to cause their interrupt to miss but this applies to all glamours, not just Feedback.

A little piece of advice for any ele that is not bunker or full cantrip.
If you fight a mesmer there is a good chance that he will not have any significant condition removal.
If you have the signet of fire just cast it first and then if you are d/d drake breath him.
If you have a scepter go to earth and auto attack him.
After a few second and some damage more he will drop

Quickly Join a Hotjoin match with a friend
Is your friend in a hotjoin and you have no idea what server he’s playing on? Just make sure you added him to your friend’s list and right click on him in your party or on your friend’s list and select “Join Friend in PvP”.

Someone didn’t get a Roster Invite Pop-up
If you right-click the person on your roster, you can “Kick them from Roster”, and then if you right click on them in your party, you can “Invite to Roster” to resend the roster invite to them. You can do this instead of disbanding and re-inviting everyone.

Pre-Game Character Switch
You can switch characters before the game starts when you have a match. Do not switch characters before you get matched up—you will be removed from the Roster automatically. When the pop-up comes to your screen where it says your match is ready and it has a “Go Now” button, that indicates you have a match, so you are free to switch now if you want.

PvP Window
You can disband a party, go to your match, and view your party on the pvp window (the one you use to access heart of the mists).

Avoiding illusionary leap
If you see an illusionary swordsman (it’ll appear right in front of you and do a leap attack), dodge immediately. More than likely they’ll follow up with illusionary leap+blurred frenzy+shatter.

Elementalists
If you see an elementalist approaching in air attunement, he’ll probably open with rtl and updraft, try to dodge this. If you get updrafted, you have to wait til you’re on the ground before using stunbreak, otherwise it’ll do nothing and you’ll get hit by burning speed.

Stealth
Channeling spells like rapid fire will track thieves and mesmers if you start channeling before the stealth. Rapid fire is especially useful for finding thieves in stealth.

Also, a thief has to stay in a shadow refuge for the entire duration otherwise he’ll be revealed. Spam aoe or try to knock him out of it. A shadow refuge over a downed enemy probably means he’s trying to revive him and is a good opportunity to hit them with hundred blades etc.

Some engineers carry the stealth when immobilised trait. Ignore this, if they disappear, they’re still immobilised.

Engineer

- Firstly, check out Teldo’s FB-Page, he has some neat tricks there!
- Healing Turret: If you spam your button to activate it, it’s possible to get the Overcharge off right when you drop it, so you don’t have to w8 3 seconds to pick it up again or explode it for the combo-finisher.

Mesmer

- If you play against a Shatter-Mesmer, always keep a look directly under his healthbar (you need to have the right Mesmer targeted though). It’ll show a little Icon with a boot under his Healthbar when he activates his Illusionary Leap, so you should probably dodge right when you see it.

Warrior

- If you like the Sword-F1’s Immobilize but hate the long channel and low DMG, you’re in Luck; you only need to hit 1 attack for the full Immobilize, so you can switch to another Weapon-Set right after 1 attack. It’s important to get the right timing though, because sometimes, there’s a weird glitch where the War won’t be able to activate a skill for like a second. But the timing isn’t really hard to master.

Rezzing
Rezzing a fallen ally is in most cases like a 10K heal and is super important. If you see someone fall you first instinct should be to rez them right away. If you have 2 or 3 people rezzing someone it is very hard to down them. Fights at higher levels of competition are about timing bursts and being able to down after that burst. If you prepare for the rez you negate the burst and take the upper hand int he fight.

Downing
A part of your burst to down someone should include a plan to double down them. Example…if you are a mezmer that just shattered someone down throw out another clone before you go for the stomp so you can F4 and avoid the knockback or fear or whatever.

Watch health bars and be ready to act as soon as there is a downed player…it will win you games.

Just to add to this… Know if your build can stomp or not and which professions they can get a stomp off on when. If you don’t have stability, tele stomp, stealth stomp, invuln stomp, etc. then you are more often than not going to be more useful to your team by DPSing the downed player or CCing potential rezers so others can get their stomp off. Be mindful of your CDs and use them appropriately to get stomps off when needed.

Pretty much common sense, but carrying on the theme from above, do not suicide rez. yes it is important to get your player up, but if there’s a tonne of cleave damage over your downed player (as there should be against decent teams), then don’t try and rez unless you have the tools or the toughness to do so. Adding another person for your team to rez to the pile isn’t going to help!

When downing a foe you can use an instant blind (or blind field) to help to prevent their interrupt.

When downing a Mesmer with 2 people, stand either side of the Mesmer from a distance to increase your chance of hitting his teleported self.

When downing an Elementalist with 2 people, 1 person starts the second waits till his arm is high in the air then he starts. The second person requires a teleport, before your down animation finishes, teleport to the eles new position and you should get him.

5v5 matches are more fun the 8v8 imo, but did you know they also exist in Hotjoin? Go to your filter, create a new filter and search for 5v5 as the game size and all maps. Name the filter 5v5, click your new 5v5 on the left and press refresh, presto 5v5 matches. Lobby for Anet to make this filter standard

Mix ups. Do you play fighting games? yes. Do you always attack high in said fighting game? yes. Does the enemy always block high? yes. Why do you think that is? Mix ups guys, for example, an elementalist using RTL, whats expected next? Updraft so will I dodge, yes. But what if he uses RTL then doesn’t Updraft? well you just lost a dodge and he can now freely updraft you.

Capping points, are you invulnerable or in stealth? Then you won’t cap or defend the point. Invulnerability is a powerful ability, but not good for capping, try not to over use it when in that bunker position
