Best Profession for Roaming in Tier 1 WvW
This pretty much sums up what we all think of qq.
I beat one of those QQ guys at a camp one cool nice evening. Then proceeded to get blasted with whispers that I needed to stop playing necro and wells are trash, staff was stupid, dagger immobilize shouldn’t be in the game, and war horn cripples are OP.
It was weird……I just said "sorry "
That’s nice. Normally they just run and reset and reset and reset until they outnumber you.

Overall Thief is quite weak in fair duels due to being hardcountered by DH/Scrapper.
On the other hand it hardcounters Rev/Necro.
Thief fights quite evenly with Mesmer/War, ill still give the advantage to good mesmer/war over good thief.
On the other hand, thief is strong in getting 1st engage(ganking)/escaping/chasing/being salty(adding in fair 1v1s against enemy they dont like and then disengaging).
Overall if you enjoy more aspects of WvW than being overall strong like warrior/scrapper, thief is your thing. Other classes like DH/Rev/Druid have some serious hardcounters like condi/reflects.
Mesmer is also quite strong but adding in blobfights when theres no enemy roamers/duelers makes you feel quite useless. Thief has the same problem. You might down someone and even manage to stomp him, but you will normally die in the process. Mesmer and thief excel in teamplay though, paired with a warrior or scrapper, they’ll be unstoppable and unkillable focus party.
Classes I wouldnt recommend are rev and druid, just because poor source stability and condi cleanse.
My list goes from best to worst:
Interested in all WvW action
Warrior
Scrapper
Guardian
Elementalist
Revenant
Necromancer
Mesmer
Thief
Druid
Interested in just roaming/dueling
Warrior
Mesmer (only if you’re good and know all classes)
Scrapper
Thief
Revenant
Druid
Guardian
Elementalist (Rates higher than rev if you have PvP xp on ele DF rotations and have condi Ascended gear)
Necromancer
As you can see Scrapper and Warrior vacate high spots on both lists but thief/mesmer reach their full potential when roaming. If you’re good on your class and have had lot of duels, you will know that facing anything below revenant on the dueling list, it’s gonna be pretty easy duel due to enemy being unable to kill you with proper cleanse/dodges.

Nobody asks the right question to op here; Can you kite? If yes, you have many good options. If no, try burst-down-and-gone builds. Both are fine, they depend on your playstyle.
Btw if those immature arguments are necessary to play in T1, you should stay away. Come to low tiers where respect is more easy to find.
ur tears r tasty
No tears, I just like your nikes. You can run really fast.
Piken Square EU, maybe soon on your server.
There is no Roaming in T1, forget it. At best, that weird “roaming”, which serves only the Support of the Blob. Standalone roaming is not available in T1. I switched on T6 and here everything is good. ^^

Honestly it’s everyone + every tier. Roaming is getting worse and worse with stealth and running away reset. I blame this on the players for the most part, we complain about the state of roaming but run cheesey builds that promote it.
I get few encounters now where the player wants to go heads up and fight till the end. If I win I don’t even spike them, just bow and walk away cause it’s such a rarity.
I just don’t know how you cure the current culture, reducing porting range or further reset ranges. People seem like they are super fast and get out of range within a second I guess for my slow kitten minion master necro lol

I like the ones that run cleric druid with life runes, then claim they are OP and great at the game, try to spawn camp and run when you beat them lol
The best “roaming” (aka. running away) classes are thief, ranger, mesmer, and warrior. These classes, especially with HoT specs, are exceptional at running away, so you can kite around other “roamers” for days on end, or run away to a tower or camp.
Have fun “roaming”!

But it’s the unfortunate truth how roaming really turned in chasing (instead of fighting) people who actually make their builds to run away (instead of to kill people).

Roam build=swiftness, stealth, port away, reset. There ya go, have fun roaming
The Zerg commander shouted = “Stick close to the tag !!! Or you will get ganked by those f*ing annoying gankers”
The Zerg commander = “It’s your fault if you get ganked ! Stick close to my behind or you are going to get ganked!”
The Zerg commander rages harder = “Blah , Blah , BLAH !!!” “Blah , Blah , BLAH !!!” “Blah , Blah , BLAH !!!” “BLAH , BLAH , BLAH !!!!!!!!” “BLAH , BLAH , BLAH !!!!!!!!” “Uninstall this game!!!!!! Now!!!!!!!!!!”

So you’re the one spying in our TeamSpeak! To be honest this is exactly what it sounds like most of the time. We do have a few commanders who play well with others and lead patiently and effectively. But too many just scream insults and scream in that ridiculous unintelligible fast slur where everything is repeated 3 times like it’s one word.

To my knowledge no class can build to escape a larger group and maintain dueling integrity. The closest is probably the stealth mesmer but its reset/escape is limited.
If you roam in T1, you will have to learn to “turn and burn” as well as reset fights if you want to consistently win. Otherwise a zerg will catch you, you will get +1’d into the ground or QQ (or similar) will bait you in only to have 5 guys drop out of stealth and blow you up.
Call it running if you want but if you want to survive, kill players on your terms, scout and flip camps in T1… you need to build to escape/stretch out/reset otherwise enjoy porting… a lot of porting.

T1 roaming is simple: bring more condi than the other guy..
If you still haven’t learnt this game is absolute trash for roaming, then well…
My advice for t1 roaming, like people have previously stated is thief due to the mobility alone. But as for roaming in general. Leave t1 asap. It was a miserable roaming experience a year ago and with the condition builds avaliable now, I bet it’s even worse.
On that note, LOL EVERYONE HATES MERI

I don’t understand why everyone thinks thief is a good thing to roam on. I’ve literally never lost a fight to a thief on my ele, they either get completely rekt or they run away when they realize they do no damage and I do a lot..
If your idea of roaming is playing the class that can run away fastest, then go play thief, but if you want to actually win fights against people who aren’t just bad zerglings trying to get back to their zergs, go play a real class. Every time I see a thief or a mesmer roaming, all I think they are is a loot bag, or someone who is going to stealth and run. I’ll engage and if they don’t run, they’ll die. Easy life, play Ele.
I guess if you wanna play a brain dead easy class you can pick up ele, engi or even druid then. Heck just try that condi chaos/insp/chrono mesmer build. But what’s the fun in that? I guess if you wanna have an easy time or are garbage player that would be your goto

Roaming is more than just being able to win 1v1s. You can easily get “out-roamed” by someone with higher mobility that knows they can’t beat you in a 1v1. Also, a thief may not be able to beat you in a 1v1, but how do you think that may change in a 2v2 and up?

Roaming is about survival, that’s why. An experienced roamer will engage on their terms and disengage when the fight is no longer in their favor.
The reason I love roaming is because it’s not who’s the most skilled, it’s who’s the smartest. I can’t beat you 1v1? Can I reset a lot and kite you? Yes? Okay, I’ll keep doing that until you’ve expended your cooldowns trying to catch me then I’ll kick your kitten . You have a tower nearby that you can run to? Okay, I’ll bait you by emoting or poke you from range until you leave your comfort zone then kick your kitten . You can have all the skill in the world but if you’re stupid/don’t know your limits then you’re gonna die a lot. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve killed someone who was clearly better than me because they just had to chase me beyond their comfort zone and wound up getting ganked.
The topic is what is the best profession to roam with and the best professions to roam with are the ones that have the most control over a fight. Mobility and stealth are the most powerful things to have because you can reset at will. If you think your skill is the most powerful tool to have you are dead wrong because you’re not going to out skill 3, 4 or 5+ people unless they’re all really terrible.

Mobility is key for roaming and condi clear right now lol. I’d like to roam with my rev again but fighting all the condi is Yolo on it

So what you’re saying is that it takes more skill to play a thief than an ele? LOL.. Okay bro, okay.

You’re telling someone who has been roaming primarily since I started playing the game. I know that it is more than 1v1s, and I fight outnumbered all the time. I win 2v1s frequently, 3v1s are a bit more of a challenge – it would need to be 3 bad players lol. But I promise you that someone having better mobility isn’t going to be the difference maker. Their ability to run away from me isn’t going to win them a fight. I do 2v5s with my ele and a friend on revenant and win pretty easily pretty often and thieves are just easy kills for us lol.

I don’t think its all about survival. Obviously you don’t want to just go dying all the time, but I personally enjoy pushing my limits frequently. I won’t run from a 2v1, I’ll even stand for a fight 3v1 on my ele because it is fun. If I die, whatever – it was outnumbered, not like it was an even fight for me to beat myself up over.

You’re welcome to try, you’d have to be plenty patient in order to beat me. I’ve never lost to a thief on my ele, and do you know why? Because I don’t blow all of my cooldowns to try to save me from your burst. You can be full zerk and not do enough damage to me to kill me unless I decide to go AFK because I run full celestial with scrapper runes. I’ll also down you with air or fire overload easily if you’re not careful. Skill does trump mobility. I can literally walk away from your thief and cycle my auras and heals and you’ll never down me because I have too much damage reduction and too much regeneration, permanent protection and every aura I use heals me and gives me vigor for more dodges. I have a lot of auras.

Mobility and stealth are crutches for bad players who can’t survive on a class that doesn’t need them. It is well known that thieves and mesmers are generally the lowest skilled roamers in the game. I lead a roaming guild that typically runs 3-8 people, usually about 5, we almost never have a thief because it isn’t very useful. Some times one of our guys will play his if he’s bored because its so easy to catch people and immobilize them so that the rest of us can beat them lol. Its rare for him to even do that because literally every other class is more useful to the group.
-snip-
Bwahaha, so being an unkillable bunker is more skilled? I’m sorry but if you can facetank that much damage and everything you do heals you then… How is that more skilled than not being able to tank a single hit and having to be extremely careful about when you dodge?
I don’t play a Thief for the record, since you’re speaking as though I do.
The point I was trying to make is that roaming is a vicious hobby. You’re going to be getting outnumbered and hardcountered constantly. If you don’t want to be dying every 5 seconds, you should choose something that has good control over a fight. Meaning the ability to decide when a fight starts and when it ends. Necromancers for example are bad roamers because they can only decide when a fight starts but never when it ends unless they’re extremely creative.
Being able to faceroll your keyboard because you’re stupid tanky and still doing decent – high damage is so incredibly un skillful I find it hilarious that you’re claiming people should play a “real class.” Although I do absolutely agree that stealth is a crutch, it still keeps those people from getting steamrolled by zergs or gank squads so I can’t say I blame them for using it.

I’m not unkillable, just only one person figured out how to kill me and he’s a friend in my guild lol. I do plenty of damage, I have plenty of videos on my stream to prove that much. I’ve even fought other eles with the same build as me on my ele and beat them because they don’t know how to time things like I do lol. It isn’t my build playing the game for me.

I assumed considering the way you worded your post of how you would beat someone, sounded a whole lot like how a thief does it lol.

I agree that necros aren’t great for roaming, but your reason isn’t the only reason why. Mobility isn’t everything, your build determines a great deal of what you can do roaming. Because I chose a well rounded build that has great tankability and decent damage, I don’t have to run away from fights as much. I do have Fiery GS in case I do need to get away from an incoming zerg quick, but thats pretty much all I have in the way of mobility, which is plenty.

Like I said before, I’m not carried by my build and I don’t just faceroll the keyboard, I have plenty of stream footage to show my game play and I don’t always play it as full cele, I’ve been playing more with my marauder/zerk/cav build than anything. Cele was just an example above that thieves do no damage to. Even on my marauder build, I don’t take much damage from thieves even if they’re full zerk due to my damage reduction.

Damage reduction trumps mobility. The question was the best class to play, so why would it be thief if thief is so easily countered? lol.. The answer to the OPs question is whatever class they’re best at. There is no “wrong answer” to the question, but speaking from years of primarily roaming, I have to say thief is not the best option just because of its mobility. Its still easily countered. You won’t EASILY counter my Elementalist because it is a well rounded build and I know how to play it.
There is not a single elite spec-meta build that needs high level of skill to win. From thief to ele, it is pretty simple. 4-5 combo’s required only. Player intelligence is rewarded in many situations if you have a nice server and good teaming. Otherwise, every prof. forum is complaining about the unskillfulness (is that the word? meh what the heck.)

K. Game requires no skill, spend $50 and win every fight. Oh wait, I spent $50 and fought so many people that also spent $50 and only have lost 1v1s to ONE person in the entire game on my ele while I’ve been doing 1v1s with it since not too long after HoT released. But yeah every elite spec is easy to win with, requires no skill.
Also, I invite any of you to 1v1 my in my guild hall any time I’m online. Prove me wrong.

This is why I don’t like playing my Reaper 1vX. Reaper is garbage in 1vX and not exactly fatal in XvX anymore either. I prefer my Scrapper that can escape a bad 1vX and deny bags to the five people trying to end me.

What I meant is that roaming is more than just fights in general. Also, how do you define a “win?” For me, a win would be engaging someone (or someones) and either:
1. decidedly killing them
2. Forcing an indefinite retreat (which is arguably not a win at times).
Perhaps, let me explain by example: I encountered a druid roamer the other day on my guardian. This guy was quite possibly the most skilled solo-roamer I have ever encountered. We ended up fighting (non-duels, but mostly fair 1v1s) 4 times and I decidedly came out victorious. It still felt like a loss overall (for the ppt) because he was far more mobile than I, had very high damage and was smart. He was able to easily avoid me if he wanted, take camps before I could intervene, and intercept me at locations where he had the clear advantage.
In a sense, I could always win the fight (as long as it was a 1v1), but he was the better roamer. Had this been a 2v2 and up, the situation probably would have been skewed even more in his favor. A lot of that had to do with his mobility and ability to stealth, which helped him slip away from larger numbers or tough situations.
You’re right, higher mobility isn’t going to always help someone win the fight, but the fight isn’t what they always need to win.
i dont understand how rangers have best mobility over thiefs shadowsteps and movespeed on dodge.
They don’t. Really if a thief hits a ranger there is normally only going to be one victor. Thief can go repeatedly invisible and all they need is one good critical hit.
That excludes Druid and Daredevil. Again, the Daredevil has a lot of damage, enough to take down a Druid despite the healing.
It also excludes condi.
I don’t consider people ‘roamers’ unless they run 2 or less players, maybe even 3. Any more than that is just an over glorified gank squad using numbers to their advantage since the vast majority of actual roamers you encounter are running 1-2 people. Any more than 3 is just zerging on a smaller scale. ~My two cents.

I think that up to a party size (5) still acceptable as roaming. That’s my opinion tho.
WvW Rank 3800 (Platinum Veteran) – PvP Rank 69 (Shark) – 25,9k Achievment Points

IMO there are 3 distinct types of roaming:
- Solo roaming, you are usually alone and built to kill.
- Duo roaming, a tight 2 man group playing on their characters strength together.
- Party roaming, 3-5 man parties that play like a small commando unit. Dont confuse this with a zerg focus party though as that will often sacrifice sustain for just damage.
Anything organized above that and you pretty much enter small guild raid territory where individual 1v1 skill start to take a backseat to AoE outbombing the enemy (mostly those groups will encounter larger groups anyway).

If I die, whatever – it was outnumbered, not like it was an even fight for me to beat myself up over.
Most 1v1’s aren’t even fights either because most builds aren’t equally strong at 1v1 or are strong against certain builds and not others (rock/paper/scissors) , if you play cele ele then you have an advantage in most 1v1’s, there was a reason that level of faceroll was kicked out of PvP…

I see a lot of chornomancers, druids, scrappers, thieves, and some tempest when with other people. You’ll see reapers, a few warriors, and maybe a rev now and then.
Honestly it’s everyone + every tier. Roaming is getting worse and worse with stealth and running away reset. I blame this on the players for the most part, we complain about the state of roaming but run cheesey builds that promote it.
Correct – it’s the “if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em” syndrome. But if a cheese build exists, you can’t expect people to not play it. It’s up to ANet to nerf it/set up counterplay (hopefully without destroying PvE balance/build diversity).
There are at least 4 popular specs (including PU Chrono Mesmer + Perplex Runes) all stealth classes that have a high degree of stealth and can burst down targets. Stealth does not need to be permanent – it just needs you to be able to escape and engage when needed to do it’s unbalanced ‘invisibility when I want it’ role.
T1 1v1 roaming is about as close to a myth as it gets. However, in T4, 1v1 roaming happens fairly frequently (but usually 1v2). I think people think of roaming in terms of havoc (<3) vs similar number players as well since that frequently happens in all tiers especially around camps/sentries/dolyaks.
What I meant is that roaming is more than just fights in general. Also, how do you define a “win?” For me, a win would be engaging someone (or someones) and either:
1. decidedly killing them
2. Forcing an indefinite retreat (which is arguably not a win at times).
That is what I consider a win. If someone runs away because they realized they aren’t going to beat me, that is a win. If I downed/killed them, that is a win.

I both agree and disagree. If someone engages in a 1v1 with me, they figure out quickly what they’re getting in to. If a guy who weights 120lbs walks up to a guy whos 250lbs of muscle and punches him and the guy doesn’t flinch, its a good time to run away or be ready to be pounded into the ground lol.
Ele wasn’t the only reason cele was removed from PvP. If you think back in time, most classes ended up running it for a time of the bunker meta era. I’ve beat up on other cele ele’s with my own, it isn’t unkillable by any means, you just need to know how to counter them and know what skills to avoid them casting or to interrupt. I’m not here to teach people how to beat my build, but I know how to beat it and it has been beaten lol.
I’m not in T1, but I’ve never seen a rev roamer. It doesn’t seem like the class has a viable build for roaming – even condi rev is quite weak compared to other condi builds.
Revs are good for squads and zergs, but not in groups of <= 3.
Actually, someone on TC roams with a rev and destroys other roamers all the time.

Everyone seems to have their own philosophy when it comes to roaming. Killing your opponent is a win for sure… but failing to deliver the killing blow and letting your opponent escape? I don’t think I could ever consider that a win. Honestly, I would give the win to my opponent because I know exactly how satisfying it is to escape from my opponent(s) and deny them a kill.
To illustrate with an anecdote: I was roaming on my druid the other day and was in the middle of a fight with a dragonhunter. Suddenly a condi scrapper joined the fight and bombed me with conditions. Knowing that condis are my weakness, I immediately stealthed via celestial avatar and disengaged from the fight. Although the DH went off somewhere else, this scrapper continued to run after me, so I tentatively engaged him 1v1 and quickly discovered that I was no match for his condi pressure. So I went off to do better things: taking camps, winning fights without him involved, and ganking him like he nearly did to me. Every time we crossed paths and we were alone, he would give chase, but I would simply avoid him. I could tell he desperately wanted to kill me, and he knew very well that he had the ability to. But I never gave him that chance.
I’d say I was the clear winner that night.

Exactly how I fight and IMO, the proper way to do so. What’s the point in engaging someone who you know has a large advantage over you? If you can’t beat them alone, don’t fight them or outnumber them. The people who get upset about this kind of strategy are the kind of players who think we think we’re skilled. Personally I don’t think I’m very good at all, but I know I’m smart. I’m not good if I gank someone and I’m not good if I run from them but I am smart because I know what I can and can’t handle. I could really care less who’s the better player. All I care is that either I win or I escape. I’m not interested in giving out free bags and I’m not going to stay to the bitter end unless it’s a 1v1 from start to finish and it’s a fight I can handle not one that hard counters me.

I had a Fort Aspenwood ranger message me and call me names (you know the word for cat starting with p that is censored here) because I ported when he tried to gank me in my zerg build.
Ironically, after telling me I was scared, he then immediately blocked me because he was scared of the words I might reply with.
I denied him a bag and made him rage. I win.
