Best WvW Class - 1 January 2014
best class : warrior
why : because warrior
best class: the one you win with
why: duh
Best class; Ranger
Why? Because of pet
Currently @ some T1 server in EU
Ranger is about the only class I can think of that isn’t the best at anything in particular. Does make a viable roamer though.
Best class: Thief
Why: L2PMasterRace
best class : thief
why : stealth is op
Seafarer’s Rest EotM grinch
Best class: thief
why: highest dps and can perma stealth on demand.
Best overall is probably Warrior. You can build them for just about anything.
Best Class: Thief
Why: Broken Mechanic. Stealth is fine when its LIMITED. Mesmer is an example even with ALL the stealth they have and taking PU that is like 17 seconds of stealth with them all having 30-90second cool downs.
Now look at Thief, Stealth, Stealth and more stealth. when they have the ability to go into stealth EVERY 4 seconds and they DO then something needs to be looked at. Removing the Leap finisher from Heartseeker would be a start, it could even be just the change needed when you can combo weapon skills with ease to go into stealth as much as you want with no risk…
Best Class: Engineer
Why: Versatility against all classes
Blissful Epidemic [Blis]
Gate of Madness
WvW is such a diverse game mode that there isn’t one master class.
Warrior is probably the best all around if you want to zerg, GvG, duel and roam, but it’s not the best at any of them.
If all you care about is roaming, thief is your go to class.
If you just want to duel, mesmer, guardian, engi are the best (pretty much in that order).
Zerging and GvG don’t have a universal ‘best’ because of how diverse tactics can be in larger groups. One comp might make zele/zecro shine where they’re rally bait in others.
we may consider whether or not there is an incarnation of [ele] that would be viable
but balanced. For now, we do not expect it to see serious use.” – ANet
if your purpose is for roaming that would be thief because they abuse the constant steath broken mechanic that exist on this game. For zerg you can’t go wrong with warriors because they have tons of armor/hp and best of all healing power now.
Now if you don’t want to play easy mode by choosing thief or warrior then play ele and put your wvw player skills to the test. If you are skillful you will do very well with this profession otherwise you will perform poorly.
best class: thief
why: because i play it
Best class is the one that best fits your playstyle, how you intuitively think, how you want to approach WvW, what you want to do in WvW. (see: sig)
Running with a guild 4-man swat team that ninja’s keeps and towers as well as running with the zerg strategically.
Composition? 2 Necros. 2 Elementalists.
Works for us.
Find what works best for you.

My play style is “loot bag in denial”. I play a Ranger, and it fits like a glove.
I saw a lot of topics like this, but all of them are out dated, so i have one question.
In your opinion, what class is the best for WvW and why?
If you are looking for help choosing a class, don’t ask here because most answers are QQ’s.
Ask in prof forums for the classes you are interested in.
best class : warrior
why : because warrior
^this
lol @ non-thieves QQ’ing about thieves. And lol @ thinking PU mesmer stealth is okay but thief stealth isn’t. For overall WvW, thieves are NOT the best class. They bring very little utility to zerg fights.
OP, I’m not sure how you intend to play WvW. Roaming, zerging, yak escorting, scouting, etc. each involve different playstyles, and different classes excel at different things.
That said, if you want to do a bit of everything, roll warrior. They make up the backbone of zergs. They’re great at roaming, with a number of very powerful builds for both solo and support play. And they can disengage and reset a fight almost as easily as a thief can. Warriors can do everything at least decently well, and many things exceptionally well.
tl;dr
best class: warrior
why: because warrior
And lol @ thinking PU mesmer stealth is okay but thief stealth isn’t.
Please, Mesmer give up ALOT if they go for a full stealth build. For a start, forced to take Torch. The Prestige is solid, the Phantasm is a joke. No stealth heal. Veil, Decoy and Mass Invis are all on 30second to 90 second cooldowns (before traits) and with that you have ONE stun breaker…
Now compare that to Thief who pretty much just have to use Dagger/Pistol for as much stealth as they want. Then they have stealth on healing slot, Shadow Refuge and Blinding Powder and 3 smoke fields alone.
Thats even ignoring the Stuns, High damage and everything they have as well…
Then you get into what options they have inside stealth – regen, initiative regen, Condition removal, increased speed. What does Mesmer get? 1 trait that gives random boons ONCE a second…
I have NO problem what so ever with Mesmer stealth, Why? They are having to use COOL DOWNS every time to do it, unlike Thief.
Warrior… only class that plays very well in all styles of play (roaming, skirmish and large group play).
Runner up: Guardian. Not a good roamer but is the backbone of nearly all group combat.
People QQing about thieves probably don’t play one. Having played one for over 1k hours along with a myriad of other fully geared 80 classes, stealth can be annoying but the trade offs are significant.

As someone who plays both mesmer and thief, I, along with many others, think PU stealth is actually much better than your standard thief stealth. The biggest reason is that mesmers can summon phantasms to dish out damage in stealth and not get revealed. If thieves want to kill you, they’re forced to get revealed.
Moreover, most PU builds trait into torch cd, which also removes condition on torch skills. So mesmer stealth gives regen/protection/AEGIS (which thief stealth doesn’t), removes condition, and allows them to lose all aggro while dishing out dps without the revealed debuff. And yes, the stealth DOES heal. Given how frequently they can stealth, they can almost maintain perma-regen. Not to mention perma-vigor from crits.
And if you cycle your utilities/shatters/blocks/evades correctly, a PU mesmer is nearly impossible to kill. Even when the stealths are on cd, the blocks/distortion/evades aren’t. Thieves don’t have nearly the defensive set up that PU mesmers have. In fact, PU mesmers can rival x/d and even some d/p specs (like Caed’s) in terms of stealth uptime. That’s not even talking about blinks, signet of ether, strafing behind clones, clone death conditions, etc.
Lastly, thieves DO have to use cd’s on their utilities for stealth. And they can be knocked out of shadow refuge and get revealed as well (something that’ll never happen to mesmers). And no weapon skill can maintain stealth that long. Even SA heavy d/p specs have to sacrifice utility slots to maintain stealth, and if they do, they won’t have enough initiative to kill you. Cloak&dagger costs 6 initiative, so if a thief misses one, that’s half their initiative gone. You make it sound like thieves can just stealth at no cost; in fact, builds that favor stealth sacrifice a lot of dps, and weapon stealth costs a lot of initiative.
I could go on, but I don’t want to derail the discussion from the OP’s question.
I’d go with guardian. While Warriors are certainly up there, the one class no group can live without in any aspect of this game is the Guardian. It can fill just as many roles as the Warrior class, it can work in tons of different specs and gearing options, the majority of its weapons all work, etc.
Guardian is probably the single most important class in this game with Warrior being a close second. The gap between second and third is considerable though.

In a dark alley, I know which one I would rather fight… and it isn’t the mesmer. Thief stealth is annoying… mesmer stealth is annoying and deadly.

And Thief stealth isnt? I would prefer to face Mesmer myself. Having a class go into stealth every 4 seconds? No thanks. Having a class that can easily reset a fight? No thanks. Having a class that can just spam same attacks over and over and make you use cool downs to survive, go reset the fight and come back and repeat over and over until you are dead? No thanks
Mesmer stealth can be annoying, not as annoying as Thief imo.
Currently I’d go with Warrior, as you can be so durable without having severe trade off like other classes need to take when taking a special rout of development.
With their ability to “banner the Lord” they even have one of the three meta abilities, too (the other two are perma stealth and portaling).
Still keeps a volume of Kurzick poems ;)
Anyone to just provided an answer without qualifying whether it is for roaming, team fights, or zerging, just lost all credibility. There is no one best class. It depends on what you are trying to do.

In duels, mesmers are wrecking people. In open field roaming, mesmers are wrecking people. Most mesmers that are decent readily admit how powerful the class is in solo play. Thieves… they are good at bringing down zerk builds, up arrows and previously damaged players. They have to work twice as hard as a mesmer to bring down a hardened target and one mistake is frequently all it takes to lose. If a player is getting crushed by thieves, it is time to change the build because that class is relatively easy to mitigate in solo encounters. Now killing one… that is an entirely different conversation.

I agree Mesmer are strong, and can be very strong depending on quality of the player and the build. It is pretty much just the Phantasm build that is “overpowered” and to me I wouldn’t even say it is that strong. Sure it can deal alot of damage but it is not godmode or anything. One mistake and all they have to do is go stealth, reset the fight and try again.
best: warrior
why:healing signet, perma cc, great health, best stability, great condition cleansing, great aoe, great dmg, great toughness, great mobility.
second best: guardian
why:great boons, stability, toughness, condition cleansing, very useful in zerg, aoe on autoattack……
worst: ranger
why: pet, pet and pet again
second worst: mes
why: ai, squishy, lack of aoe, balanced on 1v1

I don’t think the mesmer is over powered but they are currently at the top of the very powerful roaming list. Mesmers are very capable at killing from short range and while they don’t have the same amount of stealth, their misdirection, blocks and invulns make them every bit as hard to catch in combat. I think a lot of players just get kitten ed early on when they have not adjusted their builds for burst, they get caught by a stealthed thief after coming out of a fight or watch a thief run away when that thief could not kill them. Warriors tend to draw the same ire about escaping.

well for roaming mes are good, but wvw is mainly about groupfights and battles, where we still lack a lot atm. we are good duelists, but thats almost all that is left after all the nerfs. VEILBOT or roam!

I agree, i mostly just solo/small group roam on my Mesmer now. We just kinda seem a bit too strong in 1Vs1 and a bit to weak in Zerg v Zerg

True enough. Most mesmers I know stopped playing in zergs due to the constant requests for veils, portals and timewarps. I think they enjoy being useful but having to load up the utility slots with out of combat utilities makes the fighting less exciting. Course thieves, rangers and engis find themselves in an even worse zerg boat.

as i am mainly wvw and not spvp player, id rather give up some 1v1 stuff( or even a lot of it) in order to get wvw mes aoe stuff(NOT ai based), separating wvw from spvp would be a great start.

Stealth >>> mobility > condition meta focused
(it is why the P/D thief is upper top tier)
1. Thief (no kidding, right?), 3+ builds are viable
2. Mesmer (PU for even longer stealth uptime)
3. Engineer (not the zerg (Grenadier) build); roaming build is stealth elixirs and smoke field blast multiple times with rocket boots typically too
4. Warrior / “burst” mobility compensates for being ganged up on most of the time; far more common to see than Engineers because making a mistake doesn’t mean you are near immediately dead; still far less roaming Warriors then Thief/Mesmer
5-8. Elementalist, even with nerfed mobility but can counter condition meta now, specific mobility-heavy Ranger build with proper pet F2s, Guardian meditation burst build (can run to but not away), lastly, Necro (was near top pre-Dhuumfire nerf and heavy condition meta) but ends up being zerg fodder fairly often now and runs into the same issue as Engineer builds really

second worst: mes

I agree with everything he said, think he meant that its balanced AROUND 1v1 which is pretty accurate. The AI can be very iffy at times and dodging in combat near NPCs is a nightmare for pulling them.
They are rather squishy in Zergs, but that comes with the territory of having stealth and alot of movement skills.
Feedback rocks and personally i think its the BEST AoE skill in the game. It is even funny when i am DOWNED from just using that. The other AoE are rather meh in my opinion

erm i didnt mean it is balanced like in gameplay. mes was balanced by anet in a 1v1 situation=spvp balance. in spvp mes does well in 1v1 we do very well, but classes like rangers, thieves and mes should be better balanced for wvw zerg situations. came across wrong…and dont call me brah!

;-) feedback used to be stronger, but there is not that much to reflect if everyone is running war. but i still use it all the time…kinda habit as i used to run glam mes. i would love to give up some of my ai and get more aoe like feedback, that arent phantasm or shatter based.
that would maybe get me away from being THE veilbot

Back on topic, there’s no “best” wvw class. It’s all about good players vs average/bad ones.
Best class hands down right now in WvW is Thief. It’s like playing with IDDQD on.
