Best forum to host the NA WvW matchups?
I already posted i’d host and setup something, but i’m not administering it alone for sure, I already run the NSP site and 3 others, plus a full time job.
I can host and set it up…. question as above is the level of administration needed. At some point I have as little interest as A-net in moderating.
Moderation style would be users rating on a 5 star scale how good/bad the comments were and hiding comments below a threshold after so many votes. Note, there would be little control in how many accounts people may sign up, their names, validating identities, etc.
I’d be willing to do this if people think this is a better/easier way than having admins and dealing with their biases as well as eating up their time. (i’m not saying admins are all biased, finding truly unbiased ones is hard though).
If I have some time tomorrow night i’ll see if I can mock something together.

Actually I just mushed something together now. Test site here (which I can transition to a domain name if it’s liked)
http://wvwforums.denravialliance.com/
It’s a self moderating forum. On 5 or more votes on comments, if the comment is below a 2 star average it’s deleted. I can adjust that as its needed.
Comments welcome, if you as the community want to use it as ‘live’ let me know here and i’ll transition it to a full website.
Right now it’s very barebone, but can be fleshed out as features are requested.
NOTE: If you register, check your junk email for an email from vyxe@theblackappendage.com (older gaming site I made) for the user registration mail

Added private messaging capabilities, cleaned up the user self moderation logic a bit. Green light to use and abuse if you’d like. All capabilities are behind a registration/login.

Far too much moderation on GW2Guru. It was even more carebearish than these forums when it came to “insulting” other players, guilds, and servers.

Sounds great.
Seriously, an unmoderated match-up thread will be pointless.

No, it will be great. Every adult can read over and ignore the bad comments.
Because censorship is the most important part of the MMO business.

allow me to see all comments regardless of what other’s opninions are. I think most people are too stupid to decide what I can deal with and what I can’t.

Yes, every adult can. But does every adult want too?
Do you really want to build WvW community by trolling the ever-loving crap out of each other, because you have the “right” to do so? It is far more likely that all community building will cease as adults (with those powers of discernment you mentioned) will choose to leave such a toxic conversation. All that will remain are the “adults” trolling each other like children.
Therefore, a forum without moderation is pointless. It will no longer function as a meeting place for a community, and turn into a trollfest.

I can get you a far better trollfest.
Gather 100 people to constantly downvote. The best way to troll nowadays is not to write things, there is too much censorship everywhere thanks to the American culture. However, like in the 16th century hangings, people still love to see others get punished.
So there is another type of trolling, called shill trolling, just reporting a bunch of stuff to get people penalized and it is the most effective destructive troll. It works on here. It works awesome on Facebook. Reddit is still King. It still works on a bunch of other sites, even 4chan is going that direction now outside of b, of all places.

You are right about the weaknesses in downvote moderation.
However there is a counter to “report” trolling. It is called: don’t break the rules. They can report you all they want, but if you didn’t break the rules it won’t matter.

I think it is important to be for more than just the matchup threads. Moderation on these forums has always been pretty questionable, the latest move makes me think that if I switch to a new place for match-up forums I want to switch entirely and just stop bothering with these forums.
Low moderation, but have the tools for us to ignore/block a poster that bothers you would be my ideal.
I already don’t like where this is going. Everybody wants their 15 minutes/time in the limelight, and so lots of people will rush to make multiple communities, causing there to be many communities with only a few members here and there. There are already established places to discuss GW2 apart from the official forums.. however, none of them are free from the overzealous moderation found here. All communities start out as a place promoting lax moderation/“freedom” of speech, etc.. but when they become big enough, they start cracking down. Why? Because banning a few members for bad behavior here and there is not damaging enough to the size of the community to do otherwise.
I think everyone wants to be responsible for something great happening, and they usually have good intentions.. but, in this case, it’s not doing anyone any good.

Why are you looking into MU-threads if you do not want too?
At some point you will never be able to make a moderation system that will appease everyone, either it’s going to be ham-handed or it’s going to be too lax. It will be overall best to tend to the lax side and just let it go.
Should people not want to read a post, they’re going to either see who posted it and ignore the wall of text, or stop reading the forum all together. Generally people with thin skins don’t last long in PvP situations no matter what the game. Therefore moderation should probably just deal with actual spam and things way out of line (pornography and such)

Where ever it may be, assuming that one place is found and that the WvW community discussion doesn’t splinter, registration might include a declaration that you’re not working, nor affiliated, with ANet.
My position would be that if ANet is unwilling to moderate WvW discussion, then neither they, nor their employees, should benefit from a service provided by others.
The dungeon forum right here. Mods, devs never enter.
The best way, honestly, would be to have two subforums – one modded, and one unmodded. Let each poster pick their flavor. (This has the bonus of providing a haven for all random threads, giving the mods less to deal with.) Voting on posts just devolves everything into a juvenile popularity contest.
The problem anyone who tries this is going to run into is that there is no good way to deal with registration without being able to tie it to the gw2 account, which will allow for troll registrations, even impostors. (Multiple accounts would be an issue with an upvoting system.)
Anet is, unfortunately, the only one with the right tools for the job. Not saying it can’t be done, but it’ll be messy.

But the suspicion is that Anet’s going to downsize the mod team and your solution doesn’t allow for that.

To clarify, I meant that to only apply to a user-created forum. Sorry for any confusion! (I don’t think any unmodded area is a good idea for a company, as I’d imagine the legal team would have a giant conniption fit over it. )
The primary problem that I have with moderated forums is that if you take 5 good moderators, they all will have small variations to their interpretations to the rule. To some, some posts are in jest, in another viewpoint it’s an assault. Also the issue is who would you be fine modding? Certainly everyone who would be willing to in a community forum would be biased to a point. Do you want a Blackgate person modding a BG/JQ thread? How would opposing servers think?
At some point perhaps the safe point is to either go completely unmodded (outside of outright spam/off topic) or let the community as a whole determine what they want on their boards.

From what I heard (not naming the source), they’re anticipating that they will be losing a lot of wvw players in the next few months to a certain new game coming out. So, not only are they downsizing the wvw mod team, they are also downsizing the wvw dev team. That is why all wvw related content is getting pushed back a few months again.

wvw players leave because only 1 in 16 patches was wvw focused…
solution: develop even less for wvw players because if we drive them off, any development we did do might be wasted.
seems legit.

The only thing I want a source for is this ludicrous claim that they had a wvw team in the first place. the amount of development wvw has gotten in comparison to pve over the past year is inexcusable and probably the biggest squandered opportunity / failure in an MMO since SWTOR was launched.

You’d think that going the opposite direction of putting more effort and work into WvW would be the way to go. But considering this is Anet and how Anet feels about WvW, I believe it.
