As the title reads, would this be possible? Is this something the developers would consider?
I think Edge of the Mists is a great map and probably serves it’s purpose quite well. I like going around on those maps and fighting and enjoy the fact that what happens there stays there. Interaction with people and guilds of all different servers opens up so many possibilities, its great.
A question that crosses my mind quite often though: How many of us are there (especially among the guild vs guild demographic) would appreciate and take advantage of an obsidian sanctum that had the same overflow/different instance capability as Edge of the Mists operates upon?
I think a lot of lower tier server based guilds in both server groups would love an opportunity to go raid vs raid/ guild vs guild against upper tier guilds. I know as a t2/t3 guild, EP loves to meet brand new guilds we’ve never crossed paths with in open field. Whether that be the occasional shift in server matches, or EOTM. I would love to be able to look at all the colors of all the servers each week and think “I’m red this week. oh these servers are blue, these blue servers have Agg, HOPE, Ark, PYRO, BB, DI, DN, FEAR, TW (and so on) as their guilds, and these green servers have (repeat).” Set up some GvG or whatever, I imagine GW2 could even have every guild interested in this scene (which is once again growing in number quite rapidly) having one gvg per night all week long. Could even have a nice listing of guilds per server, as someone in another thread on this board is making.
Here are some benefits
This will directly increase the life-span of guilds and their members staying in this game. > > I am 100% confident that this applies not only to my guild (Everything Purple [EP])- GvG is why we play this game. Sure the outnumbered blob fights are fun, but what’s really fun to a competitive (and even when we weren’t so competitive) guild is testing yourselves in an even numbered arranged fight vs another guild’s raid. It’s awesome to see what kind of hard work you put into your guild is reflected by pitting your team against another. My point is, this format of GvG is incredibly healthy for a guild’s ability to sustain high level of interest over long periods of time in GW2 This even applies for quite a few PPT-centric wvw guilds that I know of, who take part in this player-hosted event.
It might seem like it would not be as effective as I make it sound, but let me point out that with this ability to set up cross-match up GvG, comes the option for newer guilds to pick and choose other guilds around the same experience level as they have to practice against. There are a lot of guilds who are interested in this, but can’t seem to get a real start, I have seen it plenty of times.A lot of guilds are stuck in a tier of very experienced GvG guilds who are just too well practiced in open field mechanics of GW2- fighting against these guilds only, and losing to them pushes newer guilds into a state of discouragement. How would you like to jump into tPvP with the best tPvP crews on your first day, and only be able to compete against that caliber of player for a long and indefinite period of time? You learn some things, but without a proper opponent of your own level to apply the things you learn on, it’s not likely that you will feel much sense of accomplishment. As leader of EP, our first GvG was against the hardest opponent we had the opportunity to face, Aggression (here is my guild getting schooled http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTatZFygT9M )
While I went into this fight knowing I would lose, I knew I would learn a LOT about how open field works in this game… and I did. But the important thing to remember is, if every opponent facerolled us like Agg did that day, I think we would have been a lot less enthusiastic about getting into the scene and staying in the game. Getting beat is important, and necessary to learning and improving in an established game.. but just as important is the opportunity to apply the things you learn against opponents on the same level that you are on. Our first GvG was against Agg, who 6-0’d us on May 30, 2013. We took what we learned from it, and applied to other fights.. we lost some and learned from those, applied that information.. until finally we repayed Agg by completely reversing the score in an August rematch.. and have considered them our greatest rivals since. Some goku/vegeta stuff.
With this being said, I think an instanced Obsidian Sanctum for purposes of color-based GvG matching would really encourage more guilds to be involved, which would directly improve the life-span potential of those guilds, and also encourage the forming and joining of even more, new guilds. Adding overflow/instanced Obs Sanctum that works the same way as EOTM matching does, would greatly increase the health of not only GW2’s WvW, but the GvG Scene in GW2 as well.
