Alt+F4 is no escape
If someone that you’re fighting disconnects during combat (via Alt+F4, killing the client process, etc.) their character will be instantly killed, death penalties will be applied, and XP & loot will be handed out as usual. Why not instead leave the character of the player in the game for 10-20 seconds, vulnerable to attacks? This alternative method seems to be well established in plenty of similar online games, as it would avoid issues like being stuck in combat state without actually being attacked. If no enemy manages to kill this player within the time-frame, then no one should get any loot or death penalty.
I would much rather do this. This also allows a legitimate disconnect to reconnect within 20-30 seconds and just possibly take action to survive.
If I beat you, you might want to consider changing games.
Sometimes my computer just reboots for no reason…
No it doesn’t
Maybe not reboot, but others may have internet connectivity problems. I was often getting internet dropped every 10 minutes some nights as my computer would lose internet connectivity (which led to some unfortunate log outs during fights in wvw ). Thankfully my internet provider is now different and I have had no connection problems, so it won’t affect me. But I could see how it could affect some.
Perhaps they have more up their sleeves here.
What if the rewards for killing the Breakout NPC Commander were really good?
I think that really adds a lot with perhaps a few pitfalls.

Connectivity problems are understandable sure. However, if your computer is “rebooting for no reason” then the reason is probably “you”.

I can’t wait for the breakout events. Even if they’re buggy and eventually abused, we’re heading in a cool new direction.

“Once enough players” How many players is enough? We will find out soon. I think this is a very interesting event/change.
Thanks ANet.

(first, it’s awesome we’re getting these updates for Christmas, <333’s)
Exactly. While the penalty sounds like a satisfyingly brutal “F U” to ALT-F4’rs from Arenanet, this just totally sucks for people that legitimately disconnect.
Sometimes my computer just reboots for no reason, do I get the death penalty? Sometimes the client crashes. Death penalty? Sometimes my cable modem just disconnects. What then?
The penalties are negligible so does it really matter? 1 piece of armor to be repaired is what, between 1 and 2 silver at lvl 80.
Miranda Zero – Ele / Twitch Zero – Mes / Chargrin Soulboom – Engi
Aliera Zero – Guardian / Reaver Zero – Necro
I applaud all of these changes and find it funny that people are already complaining about them, not even a few hours later.
I heard that the new NPC commander will be a human guardian. He will constant spam “retreat!”, and will occasionally run back toward the spawn for no reason muttering something about “Jennah”.

He’d never retreat! A different duty calls. That’s all.

We can’t wait at February.
ArenaNet think us as crying child who want some candy.
I lost patience to WvW. GW2 will be maniac game.
Me and [WM] will leave soon this game about 1 or 2 week later.
Already we don’t run WvW as usal that no longer fun and repetitive stupid work.
Not any more.
I’m sorry, i can’t speak English very well.

How often dopes this happens, really? Once a day, two times? Let’s say 3 times a day. That would cost you, what… 5 silver per day when wearing all exotics?
That is a small, small price imho, compared to the benefits: no more ALT-F4, which is arguable the lamest of the lamest cheat in this game.
Always carries a towel – Never panics – Eats cookies.
Nice stuff, glad it is coming so soon! Thanks! Kitten!
If you could just add auto looting badges plus badges only being available from kills (and not mesmer portal taxis or “no fire” agreements between servers at jumping puzzles as they are usually gained at the moment) I’d be over the kitten moon.
And maybe paid transfers too to stop servers collapsing as some currently are.
Big update for WvWvW in February still?

I cannot begin to question the players complaining about disconnect issues. If your having connection issues, then dying immediately upon exiting the game is the least of your worries.
First off, you have to requeue for WvW, and then enter at the starting area. This basically is the same as a death penalty in the first place. The only downside worth complaining about is that you now have to pay for repairs. Every other ‘reasoning’ you have for exiting the game is nonsense.
I have fought against far too many players who alt-f4 to prevent death to their characters when I have righteously defeated them in 5v1 combat in the jumping puzzle. Now I get to claim my hard fought and well camped victory rewards.
Beware, the jumping puzzle is your doom (and now you can’t escape me).
I heard that the new NPC commander will be a human guardian. He will constant spam “retreat!”, and will occasionally run back toward the spawn for no reason muttering something about “Jennah”.
Well played ’ol bean.
I play on a server that would end up seeing alot of breakout events. My worry is that the event by itself may not give the wanted result. People will not want to defend or flip anything but a supply camp so they can farm the event. Maybe we will get more participating in WvW but I doubt it will give them incentive to keep going for the rest of the map
Can we add some dailies to WvW?
Can we make objectives worth more to retake the longer they remain controlled by one side?
Can we add something for the controllers of a map, say special dungeon access?
this has a two fold effect as it rewards the map takers while possibly reducing the amount of players they have in the zone to defend if enough of controlling force enter it

This is incredible. I am so excited!
I agree on the autoloot on badges. The game emphasises movement a lot and it happened to me not only once when I killed an enemy and because of strafing I had to look for my lootbag after a big fight. In my opinion you shouldn’t have to focus on searching loot while a big zerg is going on around you.
I’m happy with these changes, sorry for the offtopic-comment. I like the change on the wall-repair. So it makes more sense to me now to stay on my siege-equipment and support the invading allies in order to keep the wall-% down.

there should be better rewards for people using siege while an objective is captured – if you sat on a treb for an hour smashing a wall in an epic supply struggle what do you really get besides numb fingers
I also would like to see looting in WvW changed to completely automatic period – if you have room it is picked up on kill but only if it is a player kill, non-player kills shouldn’t autoloot

I agree. Couldn’t an object count as 1-3 enemies also?
Alt+F4 is no escape
If someone that you’re fighting disconnects during combat (via Alt+F4, killing the client process, etc.) their character will be instantly killed, death penalties will be applied, and XP & loot will be handed out as usual.
Why did not implement industry standard disconnect/reconnect feature?
I.e. when someone DC-ed (or client crashed) he remains in the world until timer in non-combat mode expires. So if some DC-ed in middle of fight: he remain standing still until downed then defeated; or: combat finished, he goes out of combat, timeout triggered and he removed from WWW.
Same time those DC-ed peoples shall has an reconnect timer of couple minutes. I.e. when they are reconnects into game in that time span they are appears in nearest way point of WWW.
Just please make sure that ‘someone that you’re fighting’ is defined correctly. For example, we’re fighting and the player is running away. He’s still in the fight. We’re fighting and the player stealths. He is still in the fight. Provided his status is ‘in PvP aggression’ (in other words, this doesn’t apply to NPC creatures), and he disconnects, he is dead, loot drops, and the aggressors all get credit as appropriate. Oh, and I say show his dead a@@ on the ground for my satisfaction. lol
Breakout events sound good. I hope they are good in practice as they are in theory – I can just picture camping outside the portal keep’s waiting for the NPC to come out. Everyone zergs the NPC…Event ends….domnation continues.
I have mixed feelings about the Breakout event.
All in all, great updates. I’m glad you’re listening to us.
Alt+F4 is no escape
Remove repair costs from WvWvW, Alt + F4 problem solved in a much better way.
The way indicated in the OP will solve an other problem though: No more wait times and half the amount of mappers, gatherers etc.
As a side effect: less < lvl 80 characters in WvWvW …and less new players trying out WvWvW.
…
2. its a solution in need of a problem – players can already breakout, they just have to use their brains. scripted events only dull intelligence
3. dev time could be better spent on improving simple WvW things like better tools to organize groups
This is a good point. Giving players the tools to manage and organize groups/raids in WvW would help address the issue “Break Out Events” are intended to solve. Adding more PvE and NPC elements ot WvW should be a last resort. It is a zone that should be designed around, and encourage player driven content.
Dev time and energy would be much better spent adding in the raid features and other basic tools found in other games. It would be a large step toward removing many headaches affecting WvW, increase server community, and add more layers of social interaction between players.
Suggested Tools:
Raid Groups (sorry the current Squad system does not count)
1) 4-6 Groups Window and Chat Channel
2) Allow Raid Leaders and Officers to move players between groups.
3) Make the Icon of your Commanders in Raid Group a different colour
4) Target Marking is Raid Group based
5) Raid Group Map Commands (pings, drawn lines, etc…) last longer or are perma till cleared by Raid Leader or Officer
6) Players in raid can see all other players on the map. More dots!

Why does everyone want the character to just stay there motionless when the person disconnects? You won’t reconnect (you’re in combat, even pve mobs will take you down) so you’re as good as dead.
If someone alt-F4’s in combat, why does someone else have to spend the extra seconds bringing down a bag of hp? The griefer is now doing the person a favour by insta-killing themselves so the winner can move on to something else (like other enemies.)
Also, for the strategy of leaving one tower on each map for the enemy to prevent…. that will be hard to convince everyone on your map to do….

To clarify: character death on disconnect is a WvW only change.
Will there be any timer? As someone mentioned, you can get stuck in combat mode sometimes.
I’m sure that the instances where you get stuck in combat and are forced to log off are likely so rare that, when this happens, the person says “oh well, no biggie”.
Though in reality I expect the person to come on the forums and whine like a kid about having lost a measly 1-2 silver.
Times where I’m stuck in combat and forced to log off are fairly rare, but just stuck in combat and unable to perform actions I’d like are common. It happens near constantly on my thief in WvW and PvE. Usually it’s just a “I can’t heal or fast travel, crap” type thing, but if I legitimately had to leave for some reason (or my internet cut out) it could be a “multiple times per day” type issue.
Edit: Wanted to clarify, I support the change, it’s just that people do legitimately have issues like that, and relatively frequently so I don’t think it should be dismissed out of hand. The new issues presented by this are by far outweighed by the benefits of the change.
Real pumped to see the break out events. I am curious as to the number of players needed to start it.
I find it funny how people are lauding the anti-quit code, whilst ignoring that it will also affect random disconnects.
This still isn’t affecting the reason WHY people disconnect. Which is entirely because of repair costs.
Even big gaming blogs have stated that repair costs are one of their major complaints with WvW.
So now they’ll just punish people subject to random disconnects (due to circumstances beyond their control, like Internet provider being sucky or power outages, etc.).
They could have simply removed the repair cost for WvW. I bet that would have been a better solution to the problem.
Edit: Have they explained how to “safely” disconnect? What if you somehow enter “combat mode” while your client is exiting? Should you leave WvW before quitting the game now?
Thanks guys the changes are welcomed!! I don’t play sPvP just, WvWvW and my guild and I appreciate the attention it’s getting, keep up the good work.

It’s because there’s quite a few legitimate scenarios where someone could invoke this effect undeservingly. My internet tends to be flaky and yesterday I was with a group attacking Klovan. It was largely undefended (as our opponents were busy defending SM and WC) so I was “in combat” but only fighting NPCs and doors. My connection dropped enough packets that I got the good old “lost connection to the log-in server” error and kicked back to character select. With a timeout, I wouldn’t have likely even been hit by an enemy before disappearing, but with this system I would have been instantly killed and suffered armor damage.
That’s just one of many ways this could affect people unintentionally.
THANKS A LOT FOR THE NEW STUFF!

I don’t believe for a second that people disconnect “solely to prevent repair costs.” Frequently (perhaps even the majority of the time) it’s a rage quit reaction.
Removing repair costs from WvW will never be a valid solution to any issue. It will not ever happen because it’s an important money sink that helps curtail in game inflation. These costs will never be removed because they serve an explicit purpose. People should just come to terms with the fact that the repair costs are here to stay, and will never go away.
The break out events seem interesting. I hope on release it isn’t bugged with NPC Commanders running into repaired walls or stopping and never restarting. Like everybody, I’m looking forward to new updates to WvW. I hope this break out event isn’t the only update!

Sounds good. If only dead players’ nameplates would be greyed out now, that would be even better (and reduce traffic because people spam less skills on dead bodies in big fights)
It’s great to see ANet working on rolling out WvW changes before the promised Februrary update. Whilst I’m thankfully not on a server that will benefit much from the breakout events, the Alt-F4 fix is fantastic. I can’t say that I’m keen on the instaspawn wall/gate repair being nerfed, since for me it feels like a buff to the attacking zerg when I’d like to see defensive play getting buffed but we’ll just have to see how that goes. Advance notification of new builds can only be a good thing. Keep it up!

whaaa!!!
Umm…I have leveled from 25 to 65 in WvW and never used ALT+F4 ever. I have brought a number of new people in WvW and they have never used it.
I doubt the average casual mapper and gather is hitting ALT+F4 to escape from death.
I doubt you know what you are talking about and I believe you are complaining to complain at this point.

You know what? I think a thank you is in order.
Repair bills exist everywhere, more prevalent in WvW because its pvp not AI. Tough cookies, most people are going to hit you back. So being upset about the 10s repair bill is not worth the effort. This is a huge step in the right direction. Most of the time you get those terrible repair bills WHEN you are under the out-manned buff. I’m a 80 full exotic war, and I defend, attack, siege, and gorilla squad … and the worst repair bills have always come in / when we have the out-manned buff – most are fine to hold a keep or tower or two or paint the map otherwise. The rest is norm. Also leveled 3 other characters, 1 mainly through wvw. If your lower level, don’t go face an 80 direct, work the leveling system. Common sense ftw. Now when outmanned and you lose all but supply camp battles, you get an event that can help bolster up some numbers or at least provide you some means to play, instead of running into a spawn camping zerg. Sounds like step forward to me.
To Anet, thank you. I know the laundry list is huge but I think this is a positive step for wvw. Also, I think there are some things that your holding back still (specifics for inquiring minds), and the update & time will unfold the rest. But thank you … for putting some effort and attention to wvw. There’s been a lot of growing concern, and at least now I can say soundly … there is a future in wvw. Not just running on hope/belief. Things take time to address, and develop. Just want to share my appreciation for the effort so far, and keep up the good work!
See ya in game,

PS … I also have dc issues / network connectivity or my game freezes, but I don’t really care. The end result benefits everyone more.
(edited by Hexin.5603)
about the repair costs:
they shouldn’t remove those, instead they should reward you with more money in Events, BUT that money is divided through all the people around. This would mean, the more people are participating, the less money you get for the event (retaking a supply-camp for example).
This would also encourage people to run around in smaller groups instead of zerging all day long.
so give out 1g for a successful conquest of a supply camp. If someone takes it alone, he gets the full 1g. If 5 people take it, each of them gets 1g/5people = 20silver
Whoa… They took the orb and made it a commander! That’s awesome; I really want to try it out. Those nighttime battles where some people bunker down in one borderlands are going to start getting real interesting.
This still isn’t affecting the reason WHY people disconnect. Which is entirely because of repair costs.
Even big gaming blogs have stated that repair costs are one of their major complaints with WvW.
I don’t see how a tiny penalty for death is a problem. If anything the penalty should be more, it makes it more exciting. I’d love to see how the sort of person that complains about minor repair costs would fare in a game with full loot like Eve or early Ultima Online…
Disconnects should be handled by a cooldown timer. If I am in combat, and DC (I have a bad internet connection), leave my character in place for 10 seconds. Add a broken connection indicator, and a 10s countdown to my character portrait. Any offensive action taken in that time resets the counter to 10s.
This way, if I am fighting, and hop inside the gates of a keep to regen, and then disconnect, I don’t get killed by code, when I would have survived. On the other hand, if I (or an Alt+F4 user) DC during a fight, the 10s give players time to kill me. Remember, only one shot needs to land during each 10s to keep me in game, so it should be easy enough if I was being actively attacked.
Additionally, if possible, could the game differentiate between characters and PvE enemies in WvW? If my connection fails while I’m fighting a raptor or something, I should not be killed by the code. The reason this is being added is so that people don’t lose out on kills, badges and loot, not so that people with bad connections die to monsters more.
This is pretty much the system that EVE Online uses. They have a 15 minute timer, but that is not appropriate here, I think.
Meh. Fix the broken stuff first, then fluff us up as much as you want.
So they realized not enough people are setting up sieges (or having a clue, for that matter). I hope the breakout events are meant and set up to be a tutorial, rather than further dumbing down siege mechanics.
It still seem way too exploitable. Either people are going to farm the events and the newbies/casuals it attracts or if that’s not worth it then wait for the event to end and then retake the tower. It accomplishes the objective of keeping the action up after the entire map is taken over but at what cost? Just how many people do you expect to be suckered into this stupid circle capping loop?
Good luck and hope to hear news about February soon.
I want it to make sense right away, then another sense later. Murkiness =/= quality "
- CCP Abraxis
While the new addition is a welcome as one user posted back then it’s still open for exploits.
Here are some of the scenarios and questions regarding the Breakout Event:
-Break Out Events are special WvW events that will happen when a team has lost control of all defensive structures, not counting supply camps.
Let say Blue almost capped one border and just left one Red and Green tower. Blue just prevents Red and Green from reinforcing the tower and not killing the lord/veteran in it. Blue will just “hostage” the last 2 towers .Will the Break out Events Fail to start?
-An NPC commander will appear in the team’s start area and an event will start that prompts players to gather around. Once enough players are in the commander’s presence he will summon his trusty dolyak to give all allies in the area full supply. He will then lead the charge to the nearby objective and give players protection and assist with building siege to assault the objective with. Those benefits, along with a defensive boon that he applies to all nearby allies, makes the attacking players a force to be reckoned with
The biggest question is How Many Players? What if it’s not one world primetime and only a handful are online versus a Massive zerg on standby?Does the NPC computes the ratio between the attacking force and the defending force?
How’s the AI on th NPC commander? What are his priorities? Does he prioritize attacking a player or assisting in building siege kits? Does he revive downed/defeated players? What are his immunities and the Boons he gives out? If by chance a massive zerg roll stomped the NPC and killed it does the NPC disappears or you can still revive it? If you can revive it does it have a timer on how long you can revive the NPC?( A scenario wherein the zerg just guards the dead NPC body preventing everyone to revive it.) If you can’t revive the NPC does the Event restarts immediately ?

Glad to see you finally listened and are starting to communicate with the community. I’m also glad to see you took a couple of my ideas and ran with them.
One question I have about the disconnect death, does this include crashing? I know some people frequently crash/disconnect (including loading/waypoint crashes). Would kind of suck to always die when the client crashes/freezes.
