Commander – Jam Death [Jd]
Fissure of Woe
Wholeheartedly agree here, the commander icon and its implementation need some love from ANet.. Well, actually entire WvW needs love from ANet.. Oh well, who knows, one day..
Maybe today is the day!!! Do you think?
Today is the day a dev responds /sighs dreamily
This would be a nice addition. Another idea I had would be to have different commander types and squad size limitations:
Eg.
Main Commander – Blue, unlimited squad size
Defensive Commander – Yellow, unlimited
Havoc Commander – Purple, squad limit 20
Urrid, if you had followed Ahmrill’s post, and necroing of ancient threads… once every so often he’ll dig up almost EVERY Commander thread from the past year and bring it back to the front page.
So far, NO Dev response. =/
I bet you 800 gems that the developer that coded the commander and squad system has left Anet and didn’t bother to properly comment their code so now Anet has no clue how to “fix” the commander system.
Just like the eve billboards…

Just like the eve billboards…
The entire commander system probably consist of 3 lines of code. One to enable it, one to disable it and one that add the commanders compendium with the comment
//Lol I accidentally put two extra zeros after the 1 for the cost
Anyhow, still hoping for a dev to comment. =/
“…that de-emphasizes massive zergs” …i really doubt it, but +1 for the whole concept.
Might be cool to see if they made the little commander tag icons look like the guild symbol the commander represents. Guild icons on mini map would be pretty sweet, as well as if you scroll over the icon, the name of the the commander and the guild name should appear.
And if the commander is not affiliated in any guild, the commander icon should look the same, like a blue dorito.

+1
but good luck getting it…
All we can do is continue to express our desire for a commander and squad system that PLAYERS would like. This is all stuff we’ve asked for since BW1 and hopefully the devs will understand the frustration we’re feeling.
ya… our frustration…
I uninstall the game… Waiting for new revitalizing WvW contents to re-install. Which might be never sadly…

It’s actually way more complex than that but should still be easy to fix… If you are asking a programmer that is…
Do we have a WvW programmer?
EDIT : Strangely Devon and Hugh are not tagged as WvW team on forum!?
(edited by Gudradain.3892)
Devon already mentioned that they are looking to make improvements to the C&S system but it involves coding and different departments and isn’t something done quickly. I hope that those changes are things the PLAYERS are asking for.
Foremost being able to use the C&S system for private/public/guild forces. Make a flexible system that can be used all the different ways players like to group.
Give a guild the ability to unlock the guild commander tag. Only people In the guild can see it on a map. Give an indulgence or merit cost for changing that commander. Allow 3 tags to be allocated.
Allow commanders to also set priority spots on the map. Like objective tags? EG 1: take camp, 2: regroup here, 3: take Bay? Would be good for smaller groups within guilds to co-ordinate?
EQN is coming. What will be first, an entirely new MMO game or a relatively small change like this?
Right now I’ve hit peak burnout from the lack of meaningful changes to WvW.
Major WvW Changes:
Some expoited terrain removed
Orbs removed
Culling removed
AC hi-jinks
WXP levels
And Crazy Matchmaking
Nothing major since. This ALL has happened in one whirlwind year.

I want selectable color and/or a different icon depending of commander WvW rank. At the moment there are no way to know if someone with a “blue icon in the head” is a “pro” or a “newbie”, excluding when you know that commander, and played in the past.
Also, why the commander can use the pin everywhere? even in sPvP! lol Make a different color/icon for commanders that are pro in PvE, like Dungeon Masters, or people with completed map, or good rank on WvW.
OP
Great Post.
Great Ideas.

Aww thanks!
We also need private guild-only commander tags. It’ll be only visible to his guild mates.
This would be useful for guild-only raids, targeting the commander with ctrl+t is getting old.

No thanks, I don’t care if the PvE commander tags are the same, just give us better grouping options which include private grouping options. Tag colors based on rank is also a no. Why?
1. Being high rank in WvWvW doesn’t mean you’re a leader, doesn’t mean you’re a strategist, it just means you play WvWvW.
2. People will end up not following an awesome commander just because the commander is on an alt.
3. It’s takes probably five minutes to tell if a commander is new or just plain bad.
4. It promotes more elitist kitten
So nope.

Read my post, let me know what you think!
The passcode function allows you to distribute information as you see fit, so for instance “/g Hey, I am running a private tag, pass 2223”
Bumping this for viewability as well.
Completely agree with OP. This is the most needed addition in WvWvW.
I’m Vojin, and I approve this message. Change the tags please.
Well now, a new day, a new protest. bump
Yup, still need this Anet.
Bump if you agree?
(edited by Urrid.4593)
Definitely need some additional tools for commander tags.
Hey anet, look, a real feature that will save WvW. Wait, no, nevermind. Continue to ignore us. We will return the favor.

Great idea. And we NEED it.
Sooo…
/Bumpb4sleep >.>
Hey if everybody else bump it I can too, with the inclusion of my old rubbish GUI suggestion.
(devs will probably lock the thread or move it to “suggestions”, ie trash can, soon enough).
Features like
- Short squad name, visible on the minimap
- Color slider/dropdown menu (all primary/secondary colors)
- Public/private tickbox (Public shows to all, private shows to guild and group)
- Dropdown menu for icon choice
One can only dream…
Dawdler like GUI and still think we need this implemented!
Hi how about this for constructive?
Important feature missing since beta.
WvW needs more love. I hope ANet has noticed this thread…
I endorse this product and/or thread.
… On a somewhat more constructive note, where’s /joinsquad <playername>? Would allow private tags (as per suggestion) to be set to be visible to only squadmembers (and other commanders). Actually, with that around, there’d not really be a need for passcodes, I think (would be neat, yes, but not “needed”)

Passcodes is an unnecessary manual thing for something you could automate. Perhaps its the most flexible system, buts its also a bit complicated.
For example, you could change what I wrote about about private showing for “Guild and group members” to “Guild and group members and all the guild members of the group members”.
Suddenly multiple guild groups can private raid under a single commander. 25 people from 5 different guilds? Easy peasy, just have one member of each guild join the commander and have the commander untick “Public”. Visible for all 5 guilds, no one else.
Or of course we could have expanded commander groups to 30 peeps and only show the tag to them, but that’s so simple it cant possibly be done, since its not already in the game. Must be a technical issue that stop Anet.
commander system overhaul is critical and mandatory asap.
Also +1 to differentiate PvE commanders from WvW ones
Private tags are one thing but I would like to see different colors/ranks for Commanders tags earned with the following method.
New Commander – buys his book for 100 gold gets a blue tag and the same size squad he currently enjoys.
After that point in time Commanders will start to gain ranks by how many people they successfully lead through the capture of an objective. So Commander “Bob” and his squad take SM Castle then a percentage of the total WXP that his squad gains is applied to his Commander rank. Once he gains enough rank points he can progress to a different color of tag and more abilities such as a larger squad, etc. This also will separate WvW Commanders from PvE Commanders.
In this way good Commanders, who know what they are doing and who can lead people without ticking them off will rise up through the ranks. Commanders that do not have a clue on what WvW is about or who constantly berate the enlisted ranks will find that nobody wants to join them and thus they will not get the WXP percentage points required to move them up in rank.
After all that a simple switch for private/public can be added to the tag so if you seen a Commander tag with an X or other symbol on the tag it is a private tag and the Commander would have to approve requests to join. (or find some method to automate it)

Actually I disagree with this idea. First of all it implements power creep which is something Arenanet doesnt want (this is coming from a WXP grinder btw). Secondly and this is the biggest issue with this it ENCOURAGES BLOBBING. My whole idea of supporting private tags is to go away from 50+ man blobs on one commander, I would much rather have a map consisted of 2 guilds running separately and a militia commander with 30ish people. Giving more wxp to commander for having more people on him to take an objective just encourages blobbing bigtime and that I would not recommend at all.
The easier way to do it would be to just give more WXP for upgraded structures, i.e. fully upgraded waypoint keeps give commanders more wxp as compared to just wooden keeps. The reasoning for this is because typically these keeps require more experience, more tactics, better timing, better reading of enemy movements cross-maps to capture and therefore over time the better commanders will be the ones who will be able to take the tougher objectives.

Terrible idea, there is absolutely NO way of adequately judging the quality of a commander.
WvW needs more love. I hope ANet has noticed this thread…
Devon acknowledged the C&S system was not up to par. The problem is the WvW team seems to be putting resources into other “new” content instead of making a flexible C&S system. We still can’t use the UI to invite players to a group or kick offline players. Basic UI functions that already work in any other PvE zone, but ignored in WvW for almost a year.
Perhaps plans are underway to revamp this system, but the perception players are getting is that the focus is on new content instead of giving us functional grouping systems.
Please put the focus on a flexible (public/private/guild)grouping systems and basic UI functions that actually work in WvW.
Ahmrill just a little note. Anet talked about Living World Teams. But i never heard about WvW team.
Asking for features is fine. But perhaps you should ask Anet to assign more resources (i.e. manpower) to WvW. That way they can start working on these things now, since the current guys are tapped with other projects.

Changes to the lake/quaggans are coming, as well as a new orb mechanic. That requires resources from different departments. What resources are available need to be prioritized…. there seems to be a difference between the players and Anet in priority content.
I could care less about any changes to WvW maps or WXP trees until the grouping issues are resolved. I’d like a modern MMO to have a modern grouping system that can be used for whatever players need and has WORKING UI functions.
THAT should be the main priority for whatever resources are available IMO.

Awesome, so get on Anet’s back about resourcing and prioritizing to do it.

I think this should be our focus as a WvW forum. But that’s just like, my personal opinion, man.

I agree i think we need to let Anet understand that this issue is the one that frustrates us daily and needs to be put on the top of the list of WvW changes. Grouping in a social MMO should be flexible and easy…. right now it’s not even close.
Made an option for different color tags or just have the function of the tag without it showing.
The function of a tag without showing it is basically a Private squad. I fully endorse this. They need to have a flexible grouping system that can be used for public, private and guild events if we choose.
Give us the tools to group they way we want and let the players choose what works best for them.
Great points in this thread and bumping as it’s still desired and relevant.
Guild tags top want the list of many guilds. Adding them would make the game less zergy since players could more easily be forked off from the main zergs and managed.
Can you imagine how much more dynamic WvW would be. More medium sized forces hitting multiple targets. A zerg can only be in one place….
Until we have an in game system that lets players form private or guild forces it will always be easier to simply run with a zerg.
