Commander sniping is when one or usually several people within a zerg dedicate their build (corrupt boon, rapid fire, magnet etc.) to taking down the enemy commander.

For those of you who havent experienced this, youre probably saying to yourself “well this really doesnt sound so bad”. Wrong. Its so… gamebreaking. Your zerg can be looking for theirs for half an hour, and all it takes is some kittenwit to come along and ruin the fun. I have been in more then one situation where both of our zergs just mill around, running back and forth, because both commanders are scared of getting sniped, thus wiping their zerg, thus causing people to log off, thus causing a giant kittening snowball effect that KILLS THE kittenING GAME.

Thats the problem. Here is a proposal.

After (10, 20, 30?) people join a commanders squad, that commander gains a buff that either makes him immune to all such sniping skills, or a flat bonus to toughness and vitality.

Team Deathmatch for PvP – Raise the AoE cap for WvW – More unique events for PvE

Commander sniping is a legit tactic. Deal with it and stack your party with guardians.

A zerg that can’t fight with its head cut off deserves to die, commanders who are afraid to fight deserve to lose their zergs, and blobbing up as one group is too much insta-win as it is.

Despite my personal dislike for it, it is a legitimate strategy. The best thing to do here is to find ways of countering it. For example, mesmer veil before engages can make pin sniping harder.

Pin sniping has always existed but to a lesser degree and was much harder to pull off. Most of the pin snipe attempts are currently performed by the hoard of rangers; and it is no longer that difficult to do.

The class that was shunned (by the commanders) in WvW for being useless are out seeking vengeance. However, rangers are disliked by the larger community now. I suppose there is a lesson here for those who seek such things.

It’s a legit tactic with an easy counter. Stealth before engage will clear all targets on you. Not running a mile ahead of your group also helps. Make sure your melee leaps at the same time as you.

I think we are talking about a strategy not a tactic. Anyway, going after the commander in a battle is not only a valid strategy but a good one at that. Take out the driver and most often the zerg become wandering sheep.

Gods this is….Did you even think about this first? Drivers already run the tankiest builds they can while still feeling effective. One of the ONLY ways to deal with them is to Corrupt there boons or Pull,Push them away from the zerg. Unless you want every mesmer on the planet running moa for sole purpose of shutting down drivers.

What is the problem with calling target on enemy commander? I’m an ele commander and I can tell you I’m under pretty intense fire all the time and I expect it to be so. They would be complete fool to do otherwise. If you can’t tolerate being attacked don’t be a commander… or an ele for that matter…

Pin sniping is pretty tough on drivers but it can be countered. Proper stability rotations, good zerg movements, stronger range bombs, stealthing and good positioning. I get pin sniped almost every night when commanding so I’ve slowly developed ways of countering. A good corrupt boon→spectral grasp is still really nasty though

Reborn, for experienced mesmer its not a problem.
Most of the time you can see the leader in the middle of fight or just after the first push, most guilds dont use veil after first push.
Nothing more funnier than moa enemy commander when he is trying to make the second push. Most commanders dont expect that.

ghost tonics make identifying the commander even more obvious, unless you can get like the whole melee train wearing them. pretty darn expensive though. that being said, as an experienced sniper myself when i’m on my necro, commanders are easily identified by their ranks and guilds. we all know who the pins are cos we play with the same guys everyday…

Using pin sniping in balanced fights or in the case where xsoe/HIRE uses them in SEA when they greatly outnumber the enemy just ends fights prematurely. i’m not sure there’s much satisfaction when the fight is already over within 15seconds after you kill the enemy pin, while 90% of the zerg retreats back after the pin is down.

sniping or not sniping sometimes the commander will bite the dust. have someone ready to take over on the fly for when it happens and you’ll solve the sniping issue as well.

i don’t know how it is on other servers but on mine when the commandr dies prematurely he calls for the tag swap in ts and another one is up in seconds. i’m sure every organised server/guild does that already.

to be honest this proposal sounds really silly, what next, make eles immune to arrowcarts because it’s hard to meteorshower those while you’re made into a porcupine?

So counter it with strategy. Slow down and don’t run 20 feet in front of your zerg all the time. Position yourself in the middle. Actually have a stun-breaker or cleanse somewhere in your build (i know! Shocking! we should require such a thing in WvW!). Make sure you have a party with a stability bot guardian or two.

I have even seen good pugmanders in EB represent 3 different dummy guild’s so their guild tag switched up from time to time just to keep the enemy snipers on their toes.

Use your brain and think of counter-tactics and strategy. Don’t call for Anet to dumb the game down for you.

Why not making the commander buff visible to enemies again ? I miss tranforming the commander into a moa, I still do it sometimes, but I’m never sure it’s the “real” commander :P

Even if he lives, half his zerg gets pulled out of position to save him and it’s an easy bomb and bag farm. If my computer was better I’d record it.

I’ve been Moa’d into Ice Bow 5, with the rest of the stuff dumped on me, or simply been perma immobilised by a few rifle engis, or chain pulled so hard my character flies into the air instead of being pulled forward. Needless to say, fights aren’t fun with such harsh pin sniping, but the tactic is here to stay

Pinsnipers WILL rip off your stability, guaranteed.

Pinsniping is a valid tactic though, but there are ways to minimize it. You’ll still be caught once in a while, but by and large, experienced commanders will quickly learn to estimate how long they can stay in the line of fire before going back out for regroups.

Commanders are given away by their position in the enemy group.
When they cast skills. (You will normally see a commander use a skill a bit before the rest.)
WvW Rankings. (In some situations, though not all due to KTrain EOTM.)

The truth is that if you’re a commander, you’re bound to be a guardian, close to that comes being a warrior. All other professions are way weaker to play as a commander. I personally have over 1800 hours of commanding experience and I’ve seen all of this before, but most problems are fixed when you party up with 1 guardian. You can go for full safety and have a party with 2 guardians and 2 warriors ofcourse.
Also, saying ‘kitten the hoelbrak meta’ and running trooper runes can for whatever reason greatly help in these situations. Mainly because your party should cleanse most of your conditions, but you can spike condition cleanse on yourself if you need it.

Also in regards to the commander getting a buff to be more tanky, everyone would then tag up and get the buff. Let alone that I think the commander should be just as squishy as the rest of his zerg so he can’t whine like “Omg you guys suck, learn to play, I walked through that zerg fine!”. One of the best indicators of a commander on how ballsdeep to go is his own health and that of his partymembers.

ranger > wall of reflection
Magnet> good stability rotation in comm party
Corrupt boon > is hard to counter but you can ask in special case for Hallowed Ground

But why to bother with all those if you can have an veil or smoke field ?
Enemys will need 3 seconds in order to re-target you, wich is more that enough for a push, if you are organized

If I feel like I’m being targeted I just ask for veil or mass invisibility. Yes it sucks sometimes but at the same time it could work to your advantage if you have an alt driver.
