When I said set rotation, I mean rotation like these.

RTL—->updraft
BS——>ROF/DB
MS—->EQ
Water to heal

When to use them is up to the player. Nonetheless, a set rotation like any other (e.g. 100B+WA).

Two-ability combos are hardly “rotations.” And even these two-ability combos don’t work as well against good players, unless you’ve intelligently drawn out dodges and defensive CD’s without using them, so that you know you can get away with the combo (or unless you jump a fight where somebody has no cooldowns).

At this point, how many folks don’t know to dodge when they see RTL coming? For that reason, I often RTL (shorter CD) to bait a dodge, ignore Updraft, and instantly BS a target on the move — good, but not killer damage, but it gives you the upper hand to set you up for a later combo (and avoids burning all of your interrupts when they got to heal and have no dodges left).

Fighting games have combos too, but I would hardly consider those standard “rotations.”

this whole “rotation” takes ~8s and is repeatable after 45s due to high cooldowns on updraft and earthquake. whats next?

Back to air of course….

SA—> whip them with some lightning
Back to fire for some more DB/ROF follow by Earth and MG and ROF
Then omg…back to water.
Then air, then fire, then earth, then water, then air blah blah blah.

The only thing you can’t do is attune to ’heart" to call captain planet. But man, that would be an awesome elite

I will say that it’s much easier to get into a combo/rotation mentality in WvW, because most players are not very good at 1v1. In an sPvP match against good players (particularly players you know), the standard combo/rotation rulebook may have to go out the window. That’s true of thieves also, at least how they tend to position and play weapon swaps, although the steal → CnD → backstab is pretty consistently used at some point during the fight. That combo is easier and more effective (invisible) than most of what the ele gets. :/

Actually, that wasn’t your point. But excellent job making a new one and then proceeding to over-generalize. Obviously Air → Fire can synergize very well together, but that doesn’t mean that you always follow that attunement swap necessarily. You only have two interrupts as D/D, so there are plenty of situations where you might skip Air to go into Fire and save Updraft to interrupt the heal. What exactly are you trying to prove?

I enjoying playing a bunker D/D ele, you get high survivability so I can keep coming back, I may not down or kill a lot, but I do manage to get under your skin. This keeps the enemy focused on me while the rest of my party can focus you down. It’s a high speed tank, in a way.

It’s the next best thing to a EQ Bard.
When people come and complain about bunker ele I know I’m doing my job.

Agree with that, for sure. But I would argue that none of the classes are hard to play if your goal is to beat decent/average players. Although, perhaps it is more likely that a decent/average player who masters an Ele can beat other decent/average players who are playing a different class, which would explain why it was FoTM, but might not necessarily suggest that the class is overpowered (unless we are balancing around decent/average players).

I urge you all to either play a thief or practice against them with a friend or something.
Its actually quite easy to beat a d/d thief but you do need to know how to counter them.
If a warrior hits his fury+100b combo something will die. People learned to dodge it, avoid being bursted, and now look who’s still qqing about them; bad players only.
Same will happen with d/d thief, and maybe even with eles once (if) they fix d/d.

D/D ele’s are the new thief when you are terrible. D/D Ele’s are viable, like some of the other classes, but if you are getting owned within seconds like a thief can do then I don’t know what to say. You are terrible. And, if you can beat someone with a predetermined set of attacks as some of the mini-Napoleon’s on this thread are stating, then that person you are fighting is terrible so don’t confuse that with you being good. One does not equal the other.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve used lightning flash to set off churning earth/earthquake/ring of fire/arcane wave in the middle of an enemy zerg. Likely before I’ve even rendered. The sub level 80’s drop, the glass cannons have 20% health, burning, and 10 stacks of bleed. The tanks are usually alright. Still it’s a great spearhead attack combo.

sadly I’ve never seen a d/d ele beat a decent mesmer or warrior :P, to any d/d ele out there try to play a s/x thief requires a lot of skill, stop thinking every thief out there plays 1,2 builds ^ ^ oh and for the record I play d/d ele too actually any build that I feel it overwhelms in WvW I play it, I know both thief and d/d eles are kinda op :P

Unlike thieves, you can see DD eles coming. If they are bunker spec, you can simply choose not to stay and fight them because it will take them a year to kill you. If they are glass cannon, simply immobilize and two shot them.

You’re absolutely right, the only problem with thieves is already written in my original post; Culling. Without it thieves are actually pretty easy to beat, unless you’re underleveled or full glass cannon and you don’t pay attention or didn’t bring any defensive abilities.
Which is another concern, d/d eles need to bring 3 stunbreakers because if they get held in place for more then 2 seconds they’re (even with full tanky gear/ traits) dead meat. And people QQ abou this even!!! Saying that having 3 stun breakers is OP… well guess what, EVERY profession has 3 -4 stunbreakers, just the fact that YOU are not FORCED to equip all 3 of them doesn’t mean that you can’t.

Also, they can go outside a tower to fight w/o any recourse since they can just mist form thru the gate when down.

This, right here, needs fixed. The downed state is garbage as it is but to give any class a freebie “get inside the door while downed” ability, is trash.

I agree with you pretty much completely. Culling will not exist as they have already said they are removing that part of the system in WvW so that will be a non-issue soon, hopefully. Poor Rangers only have 2 stun breaks. They need them more than some of the other classes too.

Agree with 1st part about in need of quality of life adjustments, but for 2nd free kill part ,it depends. Ranger can be as tough as D/D ele, if not even tougher, although it requires more skills than D/D ele.

I play both classes in WvW and pvp. Both my Ele and Thief are 80, both in exotic gear. Ele is bunker spec Thief is stealth spec with burst damage. This is what I think of them .

Bunker ele is stronger class of the 2 in pvp.
Bunker ele is the stronger of the 2 in 1 v 1 though the thief can simply walk away from 1 v 1 and there is nothing the ele can do to stop that.
WvW solo roaming Thief is better. Both class can get away from zergs. Bunker ele can win more 1 v 3 fights but thieves are soo much better at melting newbies. I would say my thief dies a bit more than ele but gets almost 2x the kills solo roaming.
In small gps it’s a tie, both work well with other classes . 2 bunker eles together is amazing so is a thief + mesmer.
Larger zergs I would say a tie . I would have gave the edge to bunker ele a few days ago until I started using my SB in zerg v zerg .

Skill wise, I think it’s harder to learn bunker ele but to play a thief well requires a lot of skill imo. Ele play is more thinking less twitchy , thief play is more reflex less thinking.

I don’t pretend to be expert at either class , I do think I am decent with both. This is just based on my personal experience.

As thief, I don’t find D/D ele OP. It’s a good class, to be honest it actually can kill a thief easily but that depends on the players skill. For example if I succeed in dodging their stuns I pretty much won the duel if it’s not a tank D/D ele. They have high mobility but hey, I’m a thief, I have high mobility too so I can catch them if I want to :P

I still prefer my thief for roaming honestly.

But my d/d is awesome for group fights as they provide so much support to the team. They are incredible fun to duel with as well tho!

Basically, they are both VERY good (in WvW) but both can do things that the other can’t. And that is the reason why you won’t see players trade their thieves in for d/d eles.

As for why i have a thief (d/d specced since Pistol Whip nerf) and a d/d ele.. I play most professions in the game and have always favoured Fotm builds. If you think that makes me a bad player, go ahead. I don’t care at all. I play builds that i truly enjoy. I can’t help it that they are very effective at the same time!
